Multi-byte characters are garbled in SQL Server Business Intelligent Development Studio (Visual Studio) 2008

Hi,
I'm revising an existing report which was developed by my predecessor. Though it works fine in the production environment, when I open the .rdl file with SQL Server Business Intelligent Studio (Visual Studio) 2008 on my client
PC, I find all the multi-byte characters are garbled. When I open it with the BIDS (the same version) on the server, it shows everything correctly.
The fonts for the controls (labels) are Tahoma and it's originally only for alphabets, but multi-byte characters are supposed to be displayed in MSGOTHIC by Font Link as they are displayed correctly on the server.
Could anyone advise me how to solve this issue? I know I can fix it by changing the fonts from Tahoma to MSGOTHIC for all the contrls, but I don't want to do it.
Environment:
My PC:Windows7 64bit /Visual Studio 9.0.30729.1 / .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
Server:Windows Server 2003 R2 /Visual Studio 9.0.30729.1 / .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
Garbled characters sample:
FontLink - SystemLink
Please let me know if you need any more information. I would appreciate your advice!

Hi nino_miya,
According to your description, when you display the report in client side, characters are garbled.
In your scenario, please check if the Language is the same as the report on production server. Also please check if the data of Tahoma in registry on client PC is the same as server. If those two settings are the same, please specify font of the each
control as MSGOTHIC manaually on client PC.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.
Best regards,
Qiuyun Yu

  • Deployment of SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio (2008 R2)

Looking for some guidance on deploying SQL Server Business Intelligence Development studio (2008 R2).  I have a requirement from our Data Warehouse developers, and they require the SQL Server Business Intelligence Studio deployed to
the server that will hold the production data warehouse.  Is the SQL Server Business Intelligence development studio normally deployed on a production server?
I am hesitant about installing the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development studio since it's a development tool.  I haven't seen anything that it is required to run the developed objects.
Any information you can provide will be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    DJ

    Hi DonsJones,
The SQL Server Business Intelligence Development studio (BIDS) is a client tool for BI Projects development and won’t be installed on the production server in most cases. For a DW/BI system, the BIDS is generally used to develop ETL packages, Data Mining,
and Reporting. The development activities should be performed in the Dev environment, and the eventually ETL packages or reports should be deployed to the production server or report server. For a production server that will run the ETL packages (usually in
SQL Server Agent jobs), SSIS should be installed on the production server.

  • SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio 2008, download and install

    Hello,
I have been looking for a while now on where to download and how to install BIDS 2008 on top of my current SQL Server 2008 installation but no luck yet. Would you mind helping me out please.
FYI, here is my current configuration:
    - SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server Management Studio installed
    - Visual Studio 2008 installed before the above.
I've read that I could find a new kind of project (BIDS one) in visual studio but I can't. And from other sources, I should find a link in "All Programms > Microsoft SQL Server 2008 > Business Intelligence Development Studio" but cannot.
Thank you in advance for pointing me to the download page or any kind of post that could help me out getting this.
    Regards,
    J.

Which edition of SQL Server 2008 you had installed? Is it SQL 2008 Express? If yes, then make sure you had installed it with Advanced Services:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=B5D1B8C3-FDA5-4508-B0D0-1311D670E336&displaylang=en
If you had installed SQL Server 2008 from a CD or Media, then you can run the installation media, and make sure you had selected BIDS as an option, along with Management Tools.
SQL Server Management tools include the following components:
    SQL Server Management Studio
    SQL Server Profiler
    SQL Server Database Tuning Advisor
Command prompt tools, such as sqlcmd.exe and osql.exe.
Business Intelligence Development Studio add-ins to Microsoft Visual Studio
Note that Business Intelligence Development Studio is a separate option during SQL Server installation.
    Hope this helps...

  • Is Distributed Transaction Coordinator services of the application role are required by SQL Server 2012 for clustering and support of SharePoint 2013.

All I want to know is if Distributed Transaction Coordinator services of the application role are required by SQL Server 2012 for clustering and support of SharePoint 2013.
I have been planning and deploying my companies first Windows Server 2012/SQL Server 2012 Always On cluster and Always On Availability Groups Multi-Subnet cluster and instances for SharePoint 2013, and I will be brutally honest, the documentation on either
the MSDN and TechNet leave alot to be desired. Continually finding links in the documentation will take me from a Windows 2012 reference to a page talking about Windows Server 2008 or R2, The differences of which there are so many when it comes to configurations,
settings, roles, services when working with SQL Server 2012. I have been confused, frustrated, screaming mad, with all the misdirection in this documentation.  The documentation takes me windows 2008 R2 which is different than 2012!
Tired and trying to pick myself up off the floor!

In general, DTC is not required for SQL 2012.  But, since you are asking specifically about SharePoint, it would be better to ask in a SharePoint forum.  They would be more likely to know those situations where FTC might be needed by SharePoint.

  • Polish characters are garbled during PDF conversion

    Hi,
I am facing problem with polish characters while converting spool to pdf in smartform. I have configured the new printer with device type I2SWIN with respective codepage. The preview of pdf in SAP is fine but when it is sent as an attachment in email or converted  through program RSTXPDFT4, the polish characters are garbled.
I have already searched SDN for this but didnt find any soolution pertaining to my problem.
    Please suggest a solution.
    Regards
    Abhimanyu.

    Hello,
Is your system a unicode system?
If so perhaps the Cascading Fonts might be useful for you (see SAP note 812821).
Cascading Font means that the PDF converter checks each character
of the text. For each character it determines the Unicode
character range, to which the character belongs. After this
it checks the SAP font name and determines, which PDF font
shall be used for this SAP font and the Unicode character range.
    (see SAP note 999712)
You should get and install the device type SWINCF from note 812821, as
it is described in note 812821 (you must first apply the latest code
    correction of note 812821).

  • Fax output - Chinese characters are garbled

    Hello,
We are using fax output for two forms ( One smartform and the othe sap script). Both the form outputs are thorugh  the same fax device. For the smartform output there are no issues and the output is as expected but for the sap script output the chinese characters are garbled. Instead of the chinese characters i get output like _____ _______>,<%,,<< etc.
Interestingly, if i have a look at the print preview or take print out there is no issue and the characters are as expected. The issue arises only during fax.
    Can someone help pls?
    Thanks,

  • How come the SQL Server Business Intelligence Studio will not recognize my AdventureWorksDW after installation?

I am trying to do the tutorial for SQL Server Business Intelligence Studio, but I can't get the AdventureWorksDW to be recognized by it, when I try to connect to it.
I have tried to shut down, restart, downloaded a couple of different versions of AdventureWorksDW (I believe 2008 is the one I need), and tried to attach this AdventureWorksDW using SQL Server Management Studio 2008R2, but I cannot even do that! The instructions
for attaching a DB tell me to open Management Studio, then open a connection instance.  But then I cannot find the database button to right click on, or the attach item in the menu that is supposed to be there with it.
I had installed AdventureWorks2008R2 previously and the SQL Server BIDS sees that, but of course I cannot do the tutorial without some serious mods if I do that. I have rebooted computer, closed and reopened the BIDS app, deleted and re-created the
OLE-DB connection in BIDS, but nothing works. What am I doing wrong? I've worked in mostly the Oracle world for most of my career so I'm not new to either DW or relational DB, but this one is driving me to pull my hair. Any help greatly appreciated!

    'C:\SSIS Downloads\AdventureWorksDW2008R2_Data')

    error is:
    Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 1
Unable to open the physical file "C:\SSIS Downloads\AdventureWorksDW2008R2_Data". Operating system error 2: "2(The system cannot find the file specified.)".
I will continue to play with it, thanks very much!

  • Setup closed with exit code: 0x84C40013 - Silent Install error - SQL Server 2012 express management studio SP1

I am trying to create a silent installation package for SQL Server 2012 Express Management Studio SP1. (both x86 & x64)
Prior to installation I have performed the following :
    1. Turned ON the Windows feature 'Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1' (I had read somewhere on the internet that this is required prior to installation)
    2. Installed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0
I am using the following command line to perform an unattended install :
    <EXENAME> /Q /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ACTION=install /FEATURES=Tools
    However, the installation fails abruptly.
The application installs successfully with the following command line :
    <EXENAME> /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ACTION=install /FEATURES=Tools
The error occurs only while attempting to install the application with the /Q switch appended.
    Please help.

    Hello Fanny,
Thanks for providing the link to the SQL Server 2012 unattended install guide.
However, I must highlight that I was running the setup.exe with "Run As a Administrator" option and still facing the issue.
Anyways, I found out the root cause and I must say that it was a rather silly one.
As I had stated previously, the following command line was causing the issue :
    <EXENAME>
    /Q /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ACTION=install /FEATURES=Tools
I simply changed it to the following and it worked....
    <EXENAME>
    /QUIET /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ACTION=INSTALL /FEATURES=TOOLS
It so seems that everything must be in CAPITALS for this to work.

  • Store Multi Byte Characters in WE8ISO8859P1 Database without Migration

Hi - I am looking for a solution where I can store the Multi Byte Character's under the WE8ISO8859P1 Database.
    Below are the DB NLS_PARAMETERS
    NLS_CHARACTERSET = WE8ISO8859P1
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET = AL32UTF8
    NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS = BYTE
Size of DB = 2 TB.
    DB Version = 11.2.0.4
Currently there is a need to store the Chinese Characters under NAME and ADDRESS Columns only. Below are the description of the columns.
    Column Name            DataType
    GIVEN_NAME_ONE
    VARCHAR2(120 BYTE)
    GIVEN_NAME_TWO
    VARCHAR2(120 BYTE)
    LAST_NAME
    VARCHAR2(120 BYTE)
    ADDR_LINE_ONE
    VARCHAR2(100 BYTE)
    ADDR_LINE_TWO
    VARCHAR2(100 BYTE)
    ADDR_LINE_THREE
    VARCHAR2(100 BYTE)
What are my option's over here without considering the Migration WE8ISO8859P1  DB to AL32UTF8 ?
    1. Can I increase the size of the Column i.e make it n x 4. e.g NAME will be 480 Byte  and ADDRESS will be 400 Byte.? What are pros and cons ?
    2. Convert the existing Column from VARCHAR2 to NVARCHAR2 with the Same Size ? i.e NVARCHAR2(120 BYTE) ?
    3. Add the extension to an table with new columns - NVARCHAR2. e.g NAME - NVARCHAR2(120 CHAR) and ADDRESS (100 - CHAR) ?
    4. Database got Clobs,Blobs, Long etc. got Varied Data, Is it a good idea to Migrate to AL32UTF8  with Minimal Downtime ?
Please suggest the best alternatives. Thanks.
    Thanks
    Jitesh

    Hi Jitesh,
NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET can either be AL16UTF16 or UTF8. So mostly your DB would have UTF8.
You can definitely insert Unicode characters into N-type columns. Size of the N-type column will depend on the characters you plan to store in them.
If you use N-types, do make sure you use the (N'...') syntax when coding it so that Literals are denoted as being in the national character set by prepending letter 'N'.
Although you can use them, N-types are  not very well supported in 3the party client/programming environments, you may need to adapt a lot of code to use N-types properly and there are some limitations.
While at first using N-types for a (few) columns seems like a good idea to avoid the conversion of a whole database , in many cases the end conclusion is that changing the NLS_CHARACTERSET is simply the easiest and fastest way to support more languages in an Oracle database.
So, It depends on how much of your data will be unicode which you would store in N-type characters.
If you do have access to My Oracle Support you can check Note 276914.1 :The National Character Set ( NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET ) in Oracle 9i, 10g , 11g and 12c, For more details.
With respect to your Downtime, The actual conversion (CSALTER or in case using DMU) shouldn't take too much time, if you have run CSSCAN on your DB and made sure you have taken care of all your truncation, convertible and lossy data (if any).
It would be best for you to run CSSCAN initially to gauge how much convertible/lossy/truncation data you need to take care.
    $ CSSCAN FROMCHAR=WE8ISO8859P1 TOCHAR=AL32UTF8 LOG=P1TOAl32UTF8 ARRAY=1000000 PROCESS=2 CAPTURE=Y FULL=Y
