Multi-cam project crashing in FCP

Hi,
I'm cutting a multi-cam project and the system I'm cutting on keeps crashing - and it appears to be crashing just after the auto save.
The project is a five camera shoot, all on XDCam EX3 35mbs 1080 / 25p (ingested into FCP, native clips are then combined into a multiclip & put into an HD Pro Res timeline - the Apple Pre-set: Apple ProRes 422(HQ) 1920x1080 50i version).
The system I'm working on is an 8 Core (2x2.8ghz quad core intel) with 16gb RAMM, OSX 10.5.8 (this isn't my own system)
The actual FCP project is still pretty small (currently only 24mb), although this will be increasing (I'm cutting 10x1 hour shows).
The system appears to hang up just after doing an autosave (I say this because the time stamps on the most recent autosave are usually within a minute or two of the crash). I get the spinning ball of death, and then the system crashes (although not always, it tends to crash about 40% of the time when the spinning ball of death appears).
I'm running the system fairly minimally: I've reduced the number of audio tracks playing in real time to 2, and the audio playback quality to Low (it's stand up comedy). I am running with the waveform showing on one audio track (I've crushed the other tracks so it's not showing - although I don't know if this means the audio waveform isn't being calculated for those tracks). I've only got one track of audio actually playing.
I've reduced the playback quality & frame rate to dynamic, but I am running 5 streams of EX3 35mbs vision through the multicam playback window, in a pro res sequence (1920x180).
I've already deleted the FCP preferences & zapped the P-RAMM a couple of times.
Any ideas on how I can reduce the crashes?
Thanks!

Thanks Shane & Tony,
I'll try that, fortunately we've only shot & ingested the first few shows, so we can still fit the transcoding process into our workflow. (I had heard this suggested prior to starting the edit, but wanted to avoid it if possible because of the extra work involved).
BTW, my method for transcoding the media to Pro Res for the two sequences that I've already edited, would be to identify the transcoded EX3 QT files that have been ingested (at desktop level), take these QT files into compressor, apply & run the standard apple Pro Res template, and then re-link the clips in FCP to the new transcoded media files (which would have identical names, but be the transcoded Pro Res Version). Then re-link the sequence.
Obviously, for the shows that I haven't cut yet, I'd just ingest, & then transcode the media, & re-import the transcoded Pro Res media ready for editing.
Do you have a better way of transcoding the EX3 files to re-link to the edited sequence?
Thanks!
Andrew

  • Multi-cam project crashing in FCP - continued

    Hi,
Recently I had a question about cutting XDCam EX3 media in multi-cam on FCP (Shane & Tony gave some very good advice). The initial response - to transcode my EX3 media into ProResLT & then use these clips for multi-cam editing worked well (I'm cutting 10 x 75 min stand up comedy shows, 5 camera multicam, and will be delivering in standard Def PAL, but editing in HD).
However, I have a new problem, which may be related - simply that the FCP project keeps crashing, often just after an autosave.
Originally, I did have all of the edits in the same project, but to simplify things and reduce the size of the project file, which was only hitting 125mb at most (with 16gb of RAMM, running in 32bit, so max 4gb RAMM available to FCP), I've moved each acts edit into it's own project, so that the project just has one sequence (albeit quite complex) and it's source clips, and some effect templates in each individual project.
However, I'm still getting the same problem - the system keeps crashing, seemingly without a trigger event (although often it has appeared to crash just after an autosave).
There are two messages which have come up occasionally as part of the crash message: it's identified (on different occasions), two different plugins as having caused problems: the KG Core plug in, and the Black Magic plug in (we're using a Black Magic Decklink HD extreme card as our video card)
The crashes seemingly occour at random - often we can get through half a day without a crash, then once the gremlins kick in, it will keep crashing, often within moments of playback starting again.
My feelings are that it's something to do with playback of the multicam sequence - 5 streams of ProResLT, running from a RAID drive with a Mini SAS connection, which should handle the data throughput (sometimes with a one of a simple range of effects: Smooth Cam, 3 way colour grade, but I don't think it's the effects).
On this edit, the system that I'm cutting on is a Mac Pro 8 Core, with 16gb RAMM, with a Raid drive for the media, connected via a Mini SAS connection (all the ProResLT media is on this drive, and it's about 80% full, although we've had to juggle media a bit, which has meant adding, deleting & adding new media to the drive, while trying to keep the volume less than 90% full)
So, those are the details, does anyone have any suggestions on why our system keeps crashing?
Thanks in advance for your help & advice!
    Cheers
    Andrew

    Thanks Thomas,
No I haven't done this yet (or really known about it, until now), but I'm downloading the trial version, and I'll run it ASAP, to see if it can give any clues.
It sounds like a path to a solution!
    Thanks!

  • Multi camera project, Online/Offline. Major issues reconnect/re-digitize

Ok gang I got brain bender.
3 camera show, Multi camera project shot Digi-beta. Brought the tapes (3@90min) in low res (dv50) and now I need up-res the files or as apple would call it “online/offline”
According to the book this can be done a few diffrent ways. I have explored these ways and I’m failing...very very badly.
    Attempt #1.
    - took time line into media manager made the sequence “offline” save the project to new folder in drive with new settings (10-bit). All looks good till you try to recapture at 10-bit. Clip names get changes and numerical extensions apple put on during “make new clip” don’t match. In short I have a show that wont go. FCP wants to digitize everything
    Attempt #2
    - took time line into media manager made the sequence “offline” Selected the clips batches of clips and then re-digitaized. Again clips don’t match and FCP wants to digitize everything.
This is where I need your help. What can I do to make this process work? Below are my next moves...but before I spend another 18 hours in a bay I want to make sure I get some other input.
    Option 1)
Encode all the tapes in 10-bit, Try to reconnect. I would like to stay away from this because the space needed for 10-bit is out of this world and I do have other projects. Again I’m looking for that secret 1,2,3 to making clips only re-digitizing.
    Option 2)
try some other method I haven't tried yet. ( this is the one I’m hoping for)
Thanks for your time an I hope it hear from you ASAP as I’m dying over here. Multi-clip with online/offline it’s exactly in the index in the FCP user guide. If any one has some posting or web pages I could book make for future that would be a big help.
Thank you all for your time in advance
    Jeff

I must playback in Premiere the 4 video streams in real time
Good luck with that.  Many folks have trouble with even one stream.
edit those offline low res copies to get my edit decision list
I'm not sure offline editing with AVCHD will be possible because of the folder structure.  You may not be able to 'replace' the lower res copies with AVCHD.
My output format is Flash F4V 640x360 px square pixels for Internet playback.
Oh, man.  Shooting HD of any flavor is just overkill that adds unnecessary work to the process.  Have your client shoot in DV.

  • How to add newly imported audio - as a new storyline/angle to existing multi cam Project??

I have a 6 camera multi cam Music Video Project I have been working on in depth for 5 days. The "band" has sent me a new & improved .wav file to replace the audio I have been working with on one "song". I have imported it into the event, cannot figure out how to add it as a new angle (that I will manually sync on the timeline) and then make it the active audio monitor angle. I see ways to "connect it" but not how to have it appear in the 6up display & on its own story/time line in the precision editor. This is like reinventing the wheel. I am losing mu mind. Please help?
    Thanks

Man oh man. I need to take a break & eat somthing, how embarassing. I swear I knew that but had an attack of hysterical blindness or... the disclose arrow>add new...  Thank You Tom for your quick & thouriough reply. Have a swell holiday.

  • XML Multi Camera import file is crashing in Premiere

Hello.  I'm trying to work with an imported FCP XML file that is a multi camera edit or as FCP calls it multi clip.  I'm only using 3 cameras.  Every time I go to select any of the edits on the timeline inside of Premiere I get the following error and then Premiere crashes:  [/Whitfield/MediaCore/Backend/Make/Mac/../../Src/Sequence/TrackItemSelection.cpp-156]
    I'm using  Premiere 4.0.1.  I'm running 10.5.8 OS.
    Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks Jeff!  That worked!  I've been working on this all day....
    Thanks a lot!

  • Mixing multi formats in multi cam

i have a multi-cam project consisting of 2 cams in dvcpro hd & 2 cams in apple prores hq 422. currently using fcp version 6.05, curious if fcp 7 allows multi-format multi-cam of this material without transcoding to one format or the other. they're both 59.97 with the same aspect ratio. i also have a ton of other footage shot in apple prores hq 422 that needs to be integrated so i'm assuming my project & sequence setting should be of the predominant codec which is apple prores. thanks.

Nope. Multiclipping requires that ALL the footage match exactly...frame rate, frame size, codec.

  • Editing Sequences together Using the Multi-Cam function

I'm trying to use the multi-cam editing function in FCP to edit together 4 different sequences I have already edited. However, FCP isn't letting me do this.
Is there a better way to get around this than exporting my sequences as quicktime files, importing them, and then editing those using multi-cam?

Just collapse each pre-edited multiclip, then drop it in a new timeline.
They'll act somewhat like a nested seq. You would (should-I've never tried it) be able to 'uncollapse' any clip(s) to make any shot changes you'd need.

  • Multi-Camera EDL to Speedgrade

    Hello,
I have a multi-camera project edited using nested 4 synced cameras. I have tried to export an EDL and import into Speedgrade but I get a FPS error (where the fps are correct) and also I can't relink any media associated with the multi-camera edit in Sg.
Is this possible? Or does the EDL and Speedgrade not know how to locate the footage used in the multi-camera edit.
I am currently trying to use the Send To Sg option but wish I didn't have to because of the massive .dpx file creation and storage necessary.
This is a 4CAM 3 hour music performance so keeping data amounts down is helpful. I'm only trying to send one song at a time but still, lots of time and data for each.
    thanks for any input!!

You have what consolidate the multi camera edit in only one track, export to ProRes or Cineform (for safe storage), and export too an EDL (reverse asemble:http://blogs.adobe.com/movingcolors/2013/02/21/super-easy-edl-workflow -in-speedgrade/) . Better divide the whole in small parts, it is more reliable. It should works fine.

  • Premiere becomes completely unresponsive during multi-cam preview

While editing a 5 camera multi-cam project, Premiere completely locks me out during playback of the project.  It's like my user interface just completely died.  The project plays and nothing I do will stop it.  Autosaves do not occur and I am forced to wait an hour for the whole timeline to play (haven't waited to see if I get control even after then) or 'end task' to kill the Premiere application, thus losing all my work up until the last save.  I have had moments where Premiere locked my out for a few seconds, but I always managed to eventually get control.  The last 2 times I never got control back.
I'm running the latest version of Premiere CC on Windows 8.1.
Any help in how to interrupt Premiere's coma in this situation would be greatly appreciated.  Really sucks doing the same work 3+ times over.
    Michael

    i3770k 16gb RAM.... I don't think that's the problem.
I called Adobe Tech Support and they located the problem.  I had the wrong sequence settings, which had the wrong preview format (codec).  Apparently, the best way to create a sequence with a multi-cam track is to right-click on the multi-cam clip and select 'create sequence".  This way Premiere chooses the optimal preview format for the video clip types it contains.  And this is the only way to get Premiere to optimally handle multi-cam clips with various different video formats properly, such as mine.
I don't understand why one even has to worry about this sort of thing.  Why shouldn't Premiere ALWAYS choose the optimal playback format?  Coming from other editors I always found it really weird in Premiere that I had to select a sequence preset that was related to the video format I was editing.  For one thing, many projects have mixed format types so this system that Premiere employs seems flawed and outdated.
Anyways, eventhough Premiere still drops a few frames during playback of my five 1080p streams, I can now edit and watch the multi-cam preview without fear of being completely locked out and losing control of Premiere.

  • Premiere crashes after nested than multi cam

Premiere crashes after nested than multi cam

I am getting the same error, I worked on an hour long Doc with Premiere CC 7.0 doing the same process without issue, now I continually get a "trackItem.ccp-156" serious error crashes.  Taking all the media offline in the project and creating a multicam clip from a nest on the timeline still occurs, so i'm guessing it's a project file corruption, and not a media corruption issue.  I've tried deleting preferences, deleting media cache and preview files, and the same crash keeps coming up.  Creating a new project and bringing in the old sequence still crashes on the same nested clip.

  • Solution for Multi Cam Crashes on Audio Sync?

I am having major issues when trying to create a multi-cam clip by syncing audio. It will process a few clips and then I will get a serious error message. I would say it occurs on about 8 of every 10 attempts. At first I thought it was because I was selecting too many clips (I'm shooting a doc and sometimes need to sync 100 plus clips from multiple cameras to multiple audio tracks) But it also crashes when I try to sync a single audio track to only a handful of clips.
I'm on an I-Mac mid 2011. I've updated the OS to Yosemite, no luck. Tech support said to upgrade my RAM to 16g, I did that and it still crashes. I've re-installed the software, still crashes. Reset the preferences, still crashes. I've installed the software on a new administrator account, still crashes. I've changed the renderer to software only, still crashes.
I also have a Macbook Pro Retina 2013 running OS 10.8. I've tried creating multi-cams by syncing audio on that computer as well. Still getting crashes. I've tried all the changes on the lap top that I did on the I-Mac (change renderer, re-install, new administrator, reset preferences, etc) Still getting crashes.
I've tried different projects, different footage, different drives, placing the media on the internal hard drives. Still crashes.
I'm assuming there must be a conflict of some sort, but can't figure it out. Tech Support has been less than helpful (when I can reach them) and I'm hoping someone knows a solution. I just moved to Premiere Pro and this issue might make it a non-starter for me.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Update: I just happened happened to have a pair of ath m50s lying around.... put them on and I can see that in the multi cam sequence, I can hear only out of the left ear... once I drag and drop something to my timeline the audio's good again...
    Sorry for this question... operator???
I shoot tech videos on YouTube and I edit my own videos, so I guess I am the operator & observer here...
    Am shooting a tutorial...
Cam 1 - My Camcorder that shoots the phone
Cam 2 - Actually a screen recorder that records the steps on screen & audio from webcam
Audio - Blue Spark Digital recording to audacity
Now if I merge Cam 1 & Audio or Cam 2 & Audio alls fine... I can check the audio meters and everythings the same as before
But if I create a multicamera sequence then the audio output is about 20% lower (and no Premiere's not using the audio source from Cam1 or 2 here since they are too low and am 100% sure its not either of those)
I guess am messing up something but am unable to identify what..
    Syncronize Point - Audio
    Track Channel - 1
    Sequence Preset - Automatic
Audio Sequence Settings - Camera 1
Audio Channels Preset - Automatic (or Mono since my Blue Spark records in mono)
    Camera Names - Enumerate Cameras
Any Idea where am messing up?

I am trying to determine the new project preset for a multi-camera video shot as follows:  3 Canon camcorders,
Main shot is DV (tape) (720x480, 29fps) - ceremony and reception
    b-roll is DVD (mini-disk) (720x480, 29fps) - bride preparations
additional b-roll is AVCHD (1920x1080, 29fps) - groom preparations and misc all day ceremony and reception.
Film is from a wedding, DV contains main footage so I assume it will need to be the base.  I am planning to use the preset for DV-Widescreen.  Is there a better option?  I'm concerned about playback as the three appear to have different PAR.  I'm using Premiere Elements 10 on W8.
Ultimately this will be burned for two formats - one for a DVD that can be watched on a widescreen TV, second for a short clip trailer to go on vimeo.
(And no I won't be doing this again for a wedding that I shoot.)

Please review since I am not sure how you obtained Video 3 tall when you scaled Video 3 with Constrain Proportions in effect.
    Before
    After
It becomes a zoomed in effect to get rid of the black borders. But, there is no tall and thin involved anywhere.
And, after the Scale increase, you can always click on the screen and move the image around a bit
(without overdoing it to get black borders again).

Is Adobe software overpriced? Opinions vary.
And FCPX is a bloated inefficient Apple app not ready for prime time, but will function nicely as a hardware upgrade requirement, it's already started. Why do you think it's so cheap.

  • 'create multi-camera source sequence' crashes premiere pro

    Hi,
I use 'create multi-camera source sequence' to sync up 2nd system audio with DSLR footage.
If i select more than say 10 clips to sync with an audio file it will crash premiere pro CC 2014 50% of the time.

You can see a good tutorial on the entire process here - http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-premiere-pro-cc/multicamera-workflows-with-premiere-pro/
The help page also gives step by step - Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Multi-camera editing workflow.  I was talking about step 4. Create a multi-camera target sequence.

  • Color adjustment on Multi-cam clip in 10.1 not working and crash the app

In version prior to 10.1, I can do color adjustment on multi-cam clip and I can see the color change right away.
However, when I do the same action in 10.1, the change doesn't reflect immediately on the viewer. I need to move like a frame to have the effect shown. Sometimes, FCPX shows an error when I do that action and force me to quit the application.
    Anyone having similar issue?
