Multi Camera Function

I use 6 cameras when shooting the local roller derby events. I currently use FCE and have to scale down the 6 video feeds to little boxes so they will all fit on the canvas, then choose which angle I am going to use, cut that section out of the time line, pick the next angle and so on and so forth. Squinting at tiny little boxes becomes quite tedious after a few hours. I have read in the FCE forum that FCP has a multi camera function. Can someone please explain exaclty how it works? $1200 is steep for a program, BUT if it saves my hours upon hours of sitting in front of my computer, it will be well worth it. I am getting ready to sign a contract for next year's bouts and would like to know if I should pony up the dough for FCP.

Basically you can see tiny versions of your clips in the Viewer window,
using 4, 9 or 16 views (with 6 cameras, you'd have to use 9), and you play
the multiclip and click on the view you want. You can do this for a while,
and when you stop, all the choices you made are shown as edits in the timeline.
You can then adjust these edits with the roll tool, and adjust the sync
using the slip tool.
If you have rock solid timecode on your cameras the original syncing is easy;
otherwise you have to set in or out points in the clips for sync.
It's the quickest way to get a bunch of edits done in real-time while setting
the pace to the music or the action. If you do a lot of this kind of work,
it's definitely worth it.

  • Editing more than 4 clips using the multi-cam function. cs5.5

How can I edit more than 4 clips at a time using the multi-cam function in 5.5?

Ok, here's what I have so far...I managed to split up the video and edited both in the multi-camera view. Now I want to join those together so that I can use the multi-camera view to edit them together. Is there a way to do that? I tried nesting them both and laying them on the same timeline to use the multi-camera function, but now, I only get one view again. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Thanks for your help so far also. This is very interesting!

  • Editing Sequences together Using the Multi-Cam function

I'm trying to use the multi-cam editing function in FCP to edit together 4 different sequences I have already edited. However, FCP isn't letting me do this.
Is there a better way to get around this than exporting my sequences as quicktime files, importing them, and then editing those using multi-cam?

Just collapse each pre-edited multiclip, then drop it in a new timeline.
They'll act somewhat like a nested seq. You would (should-I've never tried it) be able to 'uncollapse' any clip(s) to make any shot changes you'd need.

  • Problem with Multi-camera function

    Hi!
I have three camera angles - I put them each on different stage but since one guy had a problem and had to stop recording the whole thing got a little messy and I had to divide audio and video tracks to compensate with audio, however two of my tracks are now splitted in two (with blank space inside) and if I use group function - "Set clip marker" is no longer working and I cannot synchronize the video and prepare it for multi-camera editing.
I hope you understand what I mean and thanks in advance for any advise!
    Thanks :)

    Colin,
I did a multi camera edit of Act 1 of a taped performance and all went well. Moved on to Act 2, which ran longer and each camera needed a tape change. So I matched the clips from each camera on each video track and tried to move on to the sync & then create a multi camera sequence stage of the project. That's when I hit a road block. I could not sync the four video tracks. So I consulted Adobe's on line help and this was all I could find about my predicament:
Note: Adobe Premiere Pro uses an overlay edit when  synchronizing clips. Take care not to overwrite adjacent clips if you have  multiple clips on the same track.
So what was I to do next? I found your post and now know exactly what to do. Thanks for a great explaination and saving me a lot of head scratching.
Why couldn't Adobe explain it as well?
    Thanks,
    Angelo

  • Multi-Cam Tool only showing angles on pause...

    Hello,
I know this has been discussed before, and I had posted on this too, however, I am still having problems, and had to finish my project 'manually', and could not use the multi-cam function, and am wondering if there is ANYTHING else I can do to rectify this. This is what I have done on my own:
Trashed my Preferences, however, I noticed that only 'Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs' and 'Final Cut Pro Prof Cache' loaded in again when I re-launched Final Cut. 'Final Cut Obj Cache' and 'com.apple.FCP.plist' did not get included. Does this matter? They are still in my Trash, as I have not emptied it.
I Collapsed/Uncollapsed my clips, rendered them since I was prompted to do so, set both the Viewer and the Canvas to 'Open', yet they both still play at the same time, in 'full' format. If I don't render, I can't play because of stuttering, then stopping.
RT Menu is set to 'Unlimited RT'; 'Scrub High Quality'; 'Dyamic'; 'Dynamic'; 'Multiclip Playback' and 'Full Quality'.
I read about putting in a 'null' effect, so as not to render, but then it stutters, then stops playing completely. Also, if I take the rendering out of Rendering Manager and continue w/out rendering, it's the same thing - not able to play until it's rendered.
If there's anyone who can help with this, I have seriously tried every avenue I can think of, and I haven't been able to get anywhere with this - sorry this so long, but needed to say what I've done, thanks in advance!

I tend to give my clients a rough cut with no filters applied. If they're happy with the cut, then we go through and add any necessary color correction, etc.
If you don't think your client could handle seeing a rough cut with no filters, the give it to them with the filters. Once they decide on some changes, throw out your render files, make your changes, and render again. Or, like you said, it shows the angles on pause. Pause it on the shot the client doesn't like and pick a different one.
As far as transitions, well of course it would only be able to show the selected angle. How would you suggest FCP creates a dissolve from one clip to four clips?

  • Multi-Cam sync on audio vs inpoints

I have been following several links on the world wide web  on PP CC multi cam functionality.
In all of my research I caught a 32 milli-second snippet of of someone speaking while demonstrating Multicam where he something to the effect that using audio to sync video clips for the purpose of performing multi cam editing KEEPS the video clips in sync. No elaboration of any kind was said on this subject.
It seems to me that a 2 hour dance recital that I will doing a two camera shoot of can certainly "Drift" out of sync from the sync point that will be at the beginning of each clip, EG camera flash or hand clap.
I do not know what the time base in a typical camera is based on. I am guessing that a crystal controled oscillator running at several megacycles is what is used, but that is only a guess.
    HOWEVER,
If PP is keeping the clips in sync by ALWAYS looking at audio, then using audio to sync video clips is a Superior method over anything else. Besides, if a camera is accidently powered off / on you have nothing to do in terms of re syncing the cameras.
I just wish that there was more information about using audio for syncing clips in multi cam editing.
If anyone can elaborate on this subject I would very much appreciate it.
    Thanks

It seems to me that a 2 hour dance recital that I will doing a two camera shoot of can certainly "Drift" out of sync from the sync point
That's certainly not normal.  I'm not sure why you'd think it is.
Personally, I find manually syncing to be faster than PP's audio sync.

  • Collapse multi-camera clips?

    Hello forum,
I've said before that I think FCPX multi-cam function is superior to anything else I've used (FCP7 and Premiere) - however, there is a feature of the old FCP7 that I REALLY miss, especially when finishing a show (after the multi-cam edit is done) - when doing sound mixing, titles/thirds, and color grading - "COLLAPSE MULTI-CAM CLIPS." This function disabled multi-cam editing, collapsing the multi-cam clip into a normal segment. When editing a multi-cam clip, the machine is pulling all of the angles in simultaneously during playback, and since I often edit on USB3 externals this is spotty when using 2 angles, and a train wreck of dropped frames when using 3 or more. I am happy to do the multi-cam edit using proxy media, but it would be great to be able to go back to original media, collapse the multi-cam clip, and be able to play-back in real-time without all the gglittching!
Does anyone out there have an obvious tip or solution to this issue?
    Thanks!

  • Multi Camera sequence went black (mostly)

So, I edited three separate multi camera sequences... They all looked great and I exported them through media encoder. When I went to look at my files one of the three had a really small file size and I noticed it was all black.
I went back into premeir pro cc and sure enough that multi cam seqence was all black as well (except about 3 seconds of footage right in the middle from two different cameras). Now when I go back to the original sequence  (not the nested multi cam) It is just fine so I know the clips are still linked into PP. Also, I can make a new multi cam sequence from the original and it is just fine as well.
I think PP just F'd up... and unless someone can tell me how to go back in the file save history or something I'm sunk because premier auto saved when I last closed it.  I'm seriously at a loss as to why this happened as it was just fine when I went to export it... or at least nearly immediately before.  Why is there 3 seconds of footage in the middle of all black 47min sequence? and that 3 seconds is from inside of a 10 minute clip on the original un nested sequence so It's not as if just one video file was showing up.
Okay, so more than figuring out what happened I want to move on with my life. Is there anyway to copy the edit points onto a brand new multi cam sequence?  Does anyone have any ideas what happened that I can undo?
    Thanks,
Okay, so this is weird.... so, the original un nested sequence was 1:30 hours with 45 minutes of unused audio at the beginning. When I made my nested sequence for multi cam editing I selected the last 45 minutes and nested that.  Everything functioned just fine, but somehow during export it took my multi cam sequence and added back in the 45 minutes of blank audio....so when I extended the multi cam sequence to 1:30 there was all my video... but my edits were all done on top of the audio. Seriously Stupid, and definitely a bug!!!
Is there any sort of file save history that I can revert to?

I accidentally found the auto-save folder which had 50+ versions of my project saved (thanks to no one, including Mark for pointing out that Premier Pro made new files each time it auto saved) And the issue is present in all of them, even back to a time when I am 100% positive I was working on the sequence inside of premier and it was displaying correctly.
So, that means that premier was not saving my file correctly, even though it was displaying correctly inside the program at that time. Then, when media encoder opened it for export the nested sequence was out of sync from the original, and today when I reopened it in premier it showed everything out of sync.
I'm using premier CC as a trial because I was considering upgrading from cs5 for the clip sync and increased features. Clip sync didn't work for my files so I had to use pluraleyes anyways and this bug I experienced today means that I lost 4hrs of work and 2 more hrs trying to figure out if I could recover my 4hrs of lost work.  Now, I have to re-edit and I'll definitely be doing it in CS5

  • Multi-Camera edits not applied

Hi and thanx in advance for your help.
Premiere Pro CS5. Windows 7 Pro 16 GB RAM lots of disk space.  Premiere It is patched with all patches except the latest Facebook synch patch.  This started a month ago.  It may be related to the number of Timelines in a project.  On my last project I started having this problem after about 10 Timelines were created in the project (a multi-song music video shoot).  In my current project (a 6 hour talking head seminar) I now have about 10 Timelines and it started doing it again so that may be a related issue.
I am doing a four camera shoot.  I create a base timeline with all four cameras for each speaker.  I then use that speaker's base timeline to create a multi-camera edit timeline that I edit with the Multi-Camera Monitor window editing function.  If I stop to make an immediate correction or to take a break, I restart by clicking the timeline window to make it the active window and opening the Multi-camera Monitor editing window and start editing.  I'll go 10 or 15 minutes and stop only to find none of the edits are applied,  The edits are exactly as they were before I started back up.  Once I get about 10 timelines or so I begin to see this behaviour. This behaviour is inconsistent and there is no way to know if the edits will be applied until I stop.
I could try breaking up the project but each individual speaker's timeline is pulled from the primary timeline that contains all the speakers.  (I copy the synched multi camera tracks and paste them into a new timeline for each speaker.)
Does ayone know what causes this?
    Or how to fix it?
    Again Thanx in advance,

  • Help Improve Premiere! FR: Separate, maximizable Multi-camera view

Do you ever use Premiere CC's Multi-Camera tools?  Then this FR is for you!
Please copy/paste as your own and send to https://www.adobe.com/go/wish/.  Every voice counts!
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature: Separate windows for Multi-camera view and Program Monitor, with ability to tilde toggle to full screen either or both.
How would you like the feature to work?
The Multi-camera view and the Program Monitor should occupy separate, individually resizable and maximizable windows.
Why is this feature important to you?
The way these interface elements are currently squeezed into the same window is extremely limiting as far a viewing options.  When the Multi-camera view is displayed, users can no longer do a full-screen preview of their edit, nor can they do a full screen preview of their multi-camera angles.  This is unnecessarily restrictive.  By putting the Multi-camera view in it's own window, and allowing it to be tilde maximized to full screen, users would have so much more flexibility for viewing their camera angles and their final edit while editing multi-camera sequences.

    Hi Kevin,
I'm not sure how sticking the Multi-Camera View together with the Program Monitor does anything to clean up the interface.  But supposing it does somehow, how can the person responsible for this change justify 'cleaning' the interface at the tremendous expense of functionally?
The current design simply isn't functional as already stated:
Full screen preview can't be used for the Program Monitor and/or the Camera Angles.
The Camera Angles can't be positioned and resized independently on their own monitor.  Ditto for the Program Monitor.
How could the PP team miss this?  Sorry to be brash, but it just baffles me how an entire team of  adults can commit such an obvious gaffe.    Perhaps they need to screen their ideas past real users, users like me that think outside the box and speak up when things don't work.  For sure Adobe already does this, but it clearly isn't working, either because they're consulting the wrong people and/or they're getting the right feedback but aren't listening to it.
When I have to multicam edit on my laptop, I would LOVE to be able to display ONLY my camera angles in Full Screen.  This would make each camera angle a usable size on a 17" laptop, and leave out any and all distracting interface elements (something helpful on any size monitor).   After my initial edit is finished, I could then scale down my Multi-camera View and place it next to my Program Monitor above my Timeline to refine the edit.  The current design makes this logical approach impossible.
I was REALLY hoping to see this fixed in 7.2.  The problems with the current design are so painfully obvious to me, every single time I do multicamera editing.  IMHO, it should also be obvious to anyone that trully understand video editing.
You wrote "this appeals to some and not to others.", but for the life of me, I can't see how this change could possible appeal to anyone (other than a sadist that gets pleasure out of seeing an editor's workflow getting screwed).

  • Multi-cam stopped working CC 2014

So the multi-cam portion of project has mostly been working, until today.  Now 2nd cam (video layer two in nested sequences) will only display black.  Unable to select the black camera angle as well.  In the main sequence, the nested sequences have multi-camera enabled, as does the program monitor.  I can still manually select the 2nd camera by right clicking on the nested sequence clip and checking 2nd camera, however that doesn't actually make a cut (just changes entire clip) and also doesn't respect the "audio follows video (unchecked)" option as selected in the multi-camera program monitor.
Is this a known issue or have I completely missed something obvious?
    timeline monitor, just fyi

Hmm... so far multi-cam is working in newly created projects since this arose in the project referenced above.  So I would guess it's possible it's due to my mistake somewhere along the way.  But haven't figured it out yet.
If anyone's had the problem with the black screen and loss of functionality, I'd love to know if it was a simple accidental click or bad setting.

  • Multi CAM Question!

Okay so I have two questions here
    1) How do you sync two cameras together? For example I will be filming a school event and I want to make sure they are both synched up so that when I go into post editing it will be very simple to use the MultiCam function. Someone told me to have someone take a Picture with flash on the stage once both cameras are rolling and to place the input on that point in FCP
    2) Once I import the footage from the XH-A1 how do I go in and input the footage from the Canon Mark 2? I already have a shortcut setup for this camera as far as the codec goes but how do I import the footage when the settings are already fixed for that of the xh-a1. Does that make sense? And once I get them both imported and on the same timeline how will they function together sense they are slightly diff as far as resolution goes.

The flash does not sync the cams, it simply gives you one easily identified moment to set your IN point. I prefer a clapper as it is easier to find using the audio waveform and audio is sampled many more thousands of times per frame so it can be more accurate.
Lots of posts here on how to import material from the Mark 2. Do a search.
For multi cam to work, the footage must be the same codec, time base and resolution.
Once captured, convert everything to the same ProRes format, including timebase and resolution.
Read the section in the Manual on Multicam +very carefully+ before you start. I suppose there are some online tutorials as well.

  • Speedgrade & Multi-Camera Source Sequences

    Hi Everyone,
I just finished cutting an instrcutional video in Pr CS6. It was shot with 3 cameras and I have used the Multic-Camera Source function in PrCS6. It's been great, really handy. Now that I have sent the project to Speedgrade CS6, Sg is unable to open those clips that are in Multi-Camera Source Sequences in Pr. This kind of makes sense since Pr isn't directly referencing that specific clip, but pulling a section from the multi-camera clips. I'm afraid to ask, but is there a way to avoid this problem? The .mov and .mts files open in Sg but those that are in a Multi-Camera Source Seequences do not open.
Thank you so much for you time and knowledge.

You can see a good tutorial on the entire process here - http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-premiere-pro-cc/multicamera-workflows-with-premiere-pro/
The help page also gives step by step - Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Multi-camera editing workflow.  I was talking about step 4. Create a multi-camera target sequence.

  • Multi-camera acq w/IMAQ-Vision processing; how to translate buffers?

I have a multi-camera system using genlocked cameras and a PCI-1408. I'm developing my application using LabWindows/CVI. I can acquire from each camera in turn using NI-IMAQ low-level functions (ref.: scan 1408 channels.c), but I want to process the images using high-level IMAQ-Vision functions. How do I translate an image captured into a low-level buffer (imgCreateBuffer) into an Image buffer (imaqCreateImage)? Are the buffer structures from imgCreateBuffer the same as imaqCreateImage, so that I can simply cast the void* returned from imgCreateBuffer to an Image* parameter in an imaq_xxx function? If not, how do I move an image from one buffer type to the other?
    Thanks!
    Jesse

Well, I'm answering my own question!
Turns out that the image buffer from imgCreateBuffer is an integer array. To get this into an Image structure from imaqCreateImage, use imaqArrayToImage.
Hope this helps the next person.

  • Multi-Cam Sequence - Effects on Source Sequence Don't Apply

Project has multi-cam sequence (nested), with color correction and other effects applied to the source sequence. However, effects on the source sequence don't apply as they would with a normal nested sequence. I'm assuming there is a setting that I'm unaware of that would enable this functionality, but so far I've been unable to find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It really was not necessary for me to determine that the effects were not properly applied, but since you asked, yes I did the blur test. I also have no idea why it does not work.
I have 4 hours of multicam footage and a client deadline fast approaching, and am feeling EXTREMELY frustrated that Adobe doesn't seem to have a proper help line phone number or chat through which I can promptly receive proper help after I have committed to this program for the next year of my professional life.
