Multi-Channel Ram Upgrade

I just purchased imac 20.5in with the 2.8MHz i7. I want to upgrade the ram. Would buying one of the multi-channel kits for this machine provide any extra benefit? If so, how many channels can the new imacs support?

Just go to OWC to see what's approprate for your model and possible permutations.  Since you  didn't specify exactly the model (year) of your imac, here's a link to OWC page to choose memory configurations.
You don't have to buy from there.  But it will give you an idea of what you can get for your model.
Update:
You sure of that 20.1" number?  Could it be 21.5"?  If so here's OWC page for a 2011 21.5 2.8Gz I7. If it is that model you need,

  • Kernel Power error after Win 7 and RAM upgrade

    Hello,
I posted earlier on the subject of win7 and ram upgrades.  I did both and it seemed to go fine.  I did the ram first ... replaced a 667Mhz 1gb with a 800Mhz 2gb.  A couple of days later the computer just shut itself down and restarted.  Since then it has done it another 5 times, seemingly at random.  Yesterday I decided to spend some time looking into it and found the 'event log'.  All the shutdowns are recorded as 'critical'.  A search on the web/here showed other occurences of the fault associated with drivers as much as anything.
After I did the win update I did update almost every driver with ones from this site.
Other than the shutdowns the only issues I have which are of very mild concern are the length of time the fingerprint reader takes to be present and that occasionally the cursor is unavailable for about a minute after logging on. When you try and control it it jumps about anywhere but where you want it to go.   I rolled back the alps driver and that seems to have sorted the cursor issue.
So, details of the shutdown from the event log are as follows.

There's more (I've shown it all below) but it's not that important.  When I looked into it I found details of the problem on the microsoft knowledge base.  Its described here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504.
I believe I fit into scenario 3 for cause and resolution.
So, it seems that win7 and mixed speed ram may be a problem on some computers ... probably only a tiny number, but it looks like the HP3507 is one of them.  I did see somewhere that I could down speed from 667 to 266 which might help with memory compatability but I can't see anywhere on the the insydeH20 bios where to do it.  BIOS is version F18 .... upgraded from F15 as part of the Win7/RAM ugrade.
Before I swap back to the 'old' memory I'll see if anybody here can come up with any ideas.  It may be that I have to sell off the expensive 2gb memory (ddr2 800mhz 200 pin) for £39.99 from maplin at a bargain price and get 2gb of 667Mhz from somewhere.
The full 'detail' regarding the fault is below.
    Bye for now.

    Hi DWeiland and Schwede,
Thanks for your replies. Yes I did the runtime engine registry change and also mass compiled the LV7.1 folder and my sourcecode. I still see the problem as I have set the LV adapter as Lv 7.1.1 runtime engine. Now I have changed it to LV7.1 development system. With this setting, it is not giving any error. Thus I don’t see any problem now. The older version of the code had the adapter as the runtime engine for some reason, now I have changed the setting to the development system. I hope that it shouldn’t be a problem.
    Thanks again!
    Thank you,
    Sasi

  • Problems with RAM upgrade iMac G5 1.8GHz

    Stuck - Need Help!
I've previously upgraded up iMac to 2 500Mb RAMs and felt recently that it needed that little bit extra, so I ordered two 1Gb chips from crucial.
Followed instructions to T, but with the two new chips in, the machine won't load.
Interestingly, it boots up with the following RAM combinations
    old 500MB + new 1GB (in any combination) - recognised as 1.5GB
one new 1GB RAM (again either one) - recognised as 1GB
I spoke to crucial who said that as the RAMs work individually, there isn't a problem with them, it could be a Firmware issue. I've upgraded all my software, and don't know what to do next?
Anyone overcome a similar problem in the past?
    Thanks

I'm experiencing something very similar to shaow. I'll share my experience in gory details - sorry for the long post but I've spent more hours trying to stabilize. I should have worked the hours at walmart and bought a new iMac with the money I could have earned
    Anyway, here goes:
Two iMac G5 1.8Ghz 17" (both Fall 2005 model), will call one A and the other B.
Prior to attempting ram upgrade: A, config working fine: both a config using 1GB slot 1, 256MB slot 2 and a single 1 PC3200 1GB stick. OS X 10.4-10.5.7. No problems. I did have the motherboard replaced under warranty after having sleep problems - capacitors were expanded. No problems since that motherboard swap.
Prior to attempting ram upgrade: B, config working fine: 2 x 256MB sticks. OS X 10.3.9
Ordered 3 PC3200 400Mhz 1GB sticks from Data Memory Systems.
    Upgraded A: Added 1GB stick = 2GB total
Upgraded B: Removed both 256MB sticks from B and added two 1GB sticks = 2GB total
Booted B, experienced gray screen of death with the multi-language crash message - somethign like: 'Please hold down the power button and restart'. Power cycled B, booted off a retail box DVD of OS X 10.5.6. Began upgrade to 10.5.6. Gray screen of death part way thru upgrade. Power cycled, gray screen of death again during early boot phase.
Decided to run tests on B. I could not locate the Apple Hardware Test (neither on system dvd 1 nor on a separate DVD). I resorted to using TechnoTools Deluxe which was included with AppleCare box. No hardware problems found including on the 2GB memory.
Removed both new 1GB sticks, pulled older working 1GB stick from A and installed into B. Completed upgrade with just 1GB memory on B to 10.5.6 and subsequently pulled down all updates for OS X 10.5.8. Powered down, added second 1GB stick to B, booted into 10.5.8 successfully. Repaired disk permissions, restarted. Began using applications, then after only about 5 minutes experienced gray screen of death. Powered down, removed new 1GB stick, replaced with one of the two remaining new 1GB sticks. Read about reseting PRAM/NVRAM. Followed steps to reset PRAM then decided to do the reset NVRAM within openfirmware. Started back up and logged into 10.5.8. Ran several applications - did not experience gray screen of death after about 20 minutes use. Have not had time for further tests on B yet.
Back to my saga with A (my original iMac G5 that was working fine with 1GB stick on 10.5.7):
Called Data Memory Systems and they sent me a replacement for the 'bad' 1GB stick.
While I was waiting for the new 1GB stick from DMS, I was struggling to get machine fully updated. Software Updater was failing with the weird network error (network was fine) and after following steps to troubleshoot, I backed up the user accounts and decided to reinstall OS X fresh from the 10.5.6 retail box (family license). Finally, I had OS X 10.5.8 all fully updated on the 1GB iMac G5 (A).
New memory arrived, installed 2nd 1GB stick. Booted up, immediately I got the gray screen of death. Restarted, booted up got about 5-15 minutes use then gray screen of death. Puzzled, I called DMS who said unlikely I got 2 bad sticks. They suggested I try memtest. So I did...
So on A, I first ran memtest from single user mode on the 2GB config. It crashed immediately with some 'Unexpected' error. Did not look like a memory error. I powered down, removed 2nd 1GB stick, and ran memtest from single user on the 1GB stick. Ran all tests 3x over a couple hours - no problems found. Retested after swapping the 1GB stick for the other. Both tested fine. Installed both sticks again and ran memtest all tests, one pass (didn't want another 6 hours lost) on the 2GB config, and all tests passed. Booted up and got gray screen of death - I don't recall if it was on bootup or after running but I ran fsck with no disk problems found, then restarted, logged in, ran disk utility to repair all permissions. Some repairs were made. Restarted A, reset PRAM and NVRAM again, booted successfully.
I haven't had much time to run extensively apps on A yet. It's sleeping as I type this on another mac. My next test will be to reset SMU.
I'm starting to wonder if the original iMac G5 has firmware problems that would prevent it from being unstable with two 1GB sticks??? My experience on two identical models of iMac G5 plus reading this post with VERY similar behaviors and after all the normal tests. I've concluded the memory is A-OK and something more sinister is lurking...
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

  • Ram upgrade 8- 16gb Dv7

Hi everybody, can I upgrade the RAM of my HP Pavilion dv7 (LX258EA#ABZ) / CPU i72630QM / mainboard 3389 / WIN7 64 Home Premium? I have 2x4 gb (i THINK DDR3 dual channel) and I would go for 2x8gb modules. Is there a compatibility charts somewhere, just to be sure to buy the right modules? Thanks for your replies,Guido

Hi,          The Maximum RAM upgrade on this unit is 8GB. You can check the information from the below link http://support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c02884765

  • PNY Optima Ram Upgrade 2010 Mac mini

First off, new to this forum so if I make a mistake in this posting I apologize ahead of time.
I am a long time Apple user of over 20 years and many purchases in that time and thought I would share my latest experience with the Apple community. My latest purchase of a refurbished Mac mini 2010, 2.4ghz model on the Apple Store Refurbish site for 470.00 this past week in September was what I personally thought to be a great deal.
    It's specs are as follows:
2.4 ghz intel Core 2 Duo
    2 gigs ram
    320 gig hard drive
    8 X Optical Superdive
Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics 256 MB shared ram
    HDMI & mini display port
bluetooth, airport wireless, firewire & ethernet
Now when I set this computer up and installed my software of Traktor Pro 1.27, Apple Logic Studio 8 and Propellerheads Reason 4.0 and tried using any of them the mac mini was insanely slow (it was ridiculous) so I checked my activity monitor and saw that my page in & outs were in the gigabytes. So I need to purchase more RAM, and I did.
What I wanted Apple users to know is that I purchased a matched pair of 2 x 4 gig PC3 8500 1066mhz ddr3 RAM chips = 8 gigs total of PNY Optima dual channel RAM for 55.00 from TigerDirect and they work perfectly. All 8 gigs recognized by OS X Lion 10.7.1 and the mac mini is one of the fastest computers I now own and use. The increase in RAM from 2 to 8 gigabytes is like day and night times a 100 in comparison. Really!
Of course I knew that I was going to have to upgrade the RAM when I ordered this model of 2010 mac mini in the first place. I just wanted to let you all know that very inexpensive PNY branded RAM does work in this model. I know I was rolling the dice, but I am on a budget and I had to try it out. The PNY Optima packaging had an APPLE MAC logo on it, so that made me feel a little more confident at the check out counter.
I know that this mac mini doesn't compare to the 2011 mac mini models but at close to half the retail price it will do everything I need it to for many years to come.
Design wise it is a gorgeous little computer. Sleek, elegant and very compact. Nice and portable for not being a laptop computer.

You should be okay selecting a high quality vendor's memory that is not from Apple, just make sure it gives you an unlimited warranty.

  • Best RAM upgrade?

I was looking to upgrade my ram from it's current 512mb and I am currious about what brands to go with.
I'm just looking to buy another 512mb stick to upgrade to 1gig and I heard OWC was a good company to buy from because they guarentee it to work in the Macbook Pro and all.
Now it's between buying an OWC brand or Techworks. I'm not familiar with any of these brands and wonder if anyone has any testimony of them.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/TechWorks/126580001/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5300DDR2S512/

    Vivid,
I swear by RAM from 18004memory. I purchased a 2 GB kit for my MBP for only $200, and it works flawlessly.
I have been purchasing RAM from them for several years, installed in several machines, and I have never had a problem, never had a panic, etc. Never. They provide lifetime warrantees (though I've never had to resort to them), and their website and support is very "Mac-friendly." You can't go wrong.
1 GB will give your MBP enough room to breath, but it will not provide all the speed that your machine could deliver. I ordered my MBP in the 2x512 MB configuration (saving me $90 on my Apple invoice, which I could then apply to the $200 for the 2 GB kit), so I ran this machine for about a week with just the 1 GB. I can tell you that the additional RAM has made a significant difference.
Now, the better response and speed I am seeing would not need the whole 2 GB. IMO, 1.5 GB will deliver just about all the benefit possible from "additional" RAM (and I base my opinion not on guess work, but on the way OS X uses and allocates RAM) for most users. On the MBPs, however, this becomes complicated by the fact that the use of a "matching pair" of sticks will enable the RAM bus to operate in "Dual-Channel" mode. This mode boosts the potential throughput of the MBPs RAM to 10.7 GBps.
Under normal circumstances, I would recommend an upgrade to 1.5 GBs, but due to the MBP's ability to use Dual-Channel RAM, I further recommend that you upgrade to the full 2 GBs (2x1 GB DIMMs). If your wallet can possibly withstand the $200 dent, you won't regret it.

  • Logic 8 Latency from running multi-channel plug-ins (Ezdrum

I'm using Logic 8 (w/Leopard) with a butt load of plugins.  I especially depend on the drum plugins (EZ drum and RMX)  When one runs them as "multi-channel" (versus stereo--the only way to use them dynamically in my opinion) one cannot (in Logic 8) freeze to audio.  That feature doesn't exist.  Subsequently, one is faced with creating tracks in simple stereo or not use the plug-in at all!! Using stereo or not using these plugins is not an option for me...Using them as is COMPROMISES performance and creates VERY difficult latency issues.
My fix I'm told is to add more RAM...any other suggestions?  BTW, if I buy up (snow leopard/Lion, Logic 9, new IMAC) I'm faced with a major labor intensive task of reinstalling or updating all my plugin software--not something I really want to do.
    Thanks.

I ran Activity Monitor while opening a few projects in Logic. And it seems that I only have about 560MB of RAM left to play with once the song loads. Before I open Logic I have about 1.5GB of RAM that is free. So yeah, I think this is the problem.
When I get my RAM in the mail, I'll try going plug-in crazy and see what happens. And then I'll post back here with the results for anyone that may be reading this in the future.
But thanks for letting me know about Activity Monitor. I learn something new about my mac everyday. God bless.

  • Memory modules can we use for RAM upgrade of HP Pavilion dv5-1198de??

What memory modules can we use for RAM upgrade of HP Pavilion dv5-1198de??
    Max RAM?  Vista?  Windows 7?

I can't find a dv5-1198de but I did find a dv5-1198er which should be similiar. It states up to 8 gb of ram. HERE
I would try www.Crucial.com for suggested memory ,you can use their Scanner Tool to let it detect what you have and what you can upgrade/replace with.

  • How can I use all tracks from multi-channel source audio with Multicam clips?

I cannot figure this out. Working in Premiere I'm prepping for a 2 camera show, with typically 4 to 6 track dual-system audio recorded by the sound guy. I can sync, and make multicam clips any number of ways–whether sync by timecode, sync by audio, or eyeballing–but whenever I edit using the MC clip, Premiere mixes down all the audio channels into a stereo single track, and I cannot pick and choose which audio track from the original to use. With 2-5 people mic'd on lavs, I need to be able to choose which audio is either cut in or heard at any given shot.
Is there any way to have control in multicam clips over which track of audio gets edited into the timeline, or even: that all tracks of audio get cut in? It's very important for the editors to be able to see waveform (which also disappears for some reason in the mixdown) and pick and choose which audio is heard?
I'm sure this might be a simple fix, but I cannot get my head around it for workflow purposes for my assistant editors. We need to use multicam, but this audio thing is driving all of us crazy. None of us can figure out how to have a multicam clip and use it with control over what audio is cut in.

True, but what I need to be able to do is have my multicam sequence in the source monitor, and cut into my working sequence with either just the audio I need from the sound guy's multi-channel WAV, OR cut in all the sound and from then I can just enable or disable what I need or don't need. But also be able to match back to the Multicam source from my working sequence.
I don't want to have to open the synced sequence, and razor blade the things I need and have to copy and paste into my working sequence in order to have the full spectrum of my multi-channel mono lav WAV files...with their waveforms visible.
Essentially, I want my Multicam clips to load in the source monitor, and the ability to cut them into the working sequence without it mixing down the audio into a single track with no visible waveform–which is what it is doing currently. Can I choose to edit in either ALL of the tracks of the WAV file along with the camera shot I want, or control which audio gets cut in?

First go to the RIM web site and look to see if they have an uninstaller for the device you had.  Some times a reinstall of the application and then running the uninstaller is required for complete removal.
If no uninstaller is available, then you will have to use Spotlight to find all items with 'Blackberry' and 'Rim' in the titles.  I would also download EasyFind and use that to locate such files.  Often it will locate items that Spotlight misses.
    Ciao.

  • HP Envy 13 1030nr. Windows 7 64-bit. RAM upgrade help.

I just purchased a RAM upgrade for my Envy 13 and I was trying to figure out how exactly to access the memory module.  I couldn't find a youtube video for the Envy 13 and reading the maintenance manual provides only partial instructions to access the memory module.  It tells you what you need to do (Disconnect the TouchPad cable 2 from the low insertion force (LIF) connector on the system board) but not how to do it without damaging the computer.  I don't want to permanently sever a cable or anything so I'm looking for help via a link to a video or more detailed instructions on exactly how to safely access the memory module.
I was under the impression that this would be a quick replacement, but the more I read the manual, the more I think that this is going to be a little more complicated than opening up the bottom and removing the current RAM chip and replacing it with the one I have.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

    Here is the Manual:
    Manual
Memory is indeed on the motherboard and getting there requires nearly complete disassembly. See Page 4-26. Not sure how this qualifies as "easy" and if you have not done this before you should get some help. And yes, keep careful track of those screws.

  • Hard Drive and RAM upgrades for latest 15" MBP

I'm minutes from ordering a new MBP. Only concerns are whether I get hte Apple upgrades or shop around.
    I like this Hard Drive...
    http://www.compu2000.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=6433
    And this RAM upgrade...
    http://www.a-power.com/product-10937-311-4
If these are equivalent to the apple options I can save hundreds and get a 320 GB drive, which will make a great portable.
So, does my plan hold water?

You're on your own for support when you do your own upgrades like this, but generally speaking, it works fine.
Note that HDD is less risky than RAM. With RAM you run the risk of unstable behavior that is tougher to diagnose. That said, a quality RAM upgrade and some initial testing with any of many available tools is as good as a factory build.
HDD upgrades are less risky, and I've upgraded (well, replaced after HDD death) ones in my MBPs many many times. I crunch my hard drives more than normal and have to generally replace them about every year. Some of the MBPs don't make this easy, and prepare to get all sorts of cozy with little 0 and 1 sized Phillips screwdrivers and some T6 as well, but it is doable (just not quite for the truly faint of heart).
Again, you're on your own for support once you do this, so weigh that in your decision.

  • Important question: I have got a PXI-4472 and I am able to do single-channel acquisition. How does multi-channel acquisition work?

Look at the VI: it is quite eleborate, but the crucial point is Data Acquisition and Trigger&Gate (and, consequentely, Write to File operation).
I can add plot on the Waveform Graph DATA, this is rather easy, simply adding the channel numbers in the channel control (es. writing 0,3,7 will collect data from the three channels).
First question: is this operation of adding plots correct?
Second question: does the sampling rate dwindle when I consider multi-channel acquisition? I mean: 1 channel-->100KHz ; 2 channels-->50 KHz
More over, and MORE IMPORTANT: is it possible to set different trigger conditions for different channel
s? How can I control this operation?
Third: can you have a look at the VI as all (the appearence, the functionality, the logical sequence...). I am looking forward to get your advice. In particular:
Look at the frontal panel: what do you suggest to make it "smaller"? More tab controls?
Look at the Block Diagram: do I have to connect ERROR IN and ERROR OUT to every suVI or function that makes this connection possible (as Trigger&Gate and Write File)?
    Attachments:
    Start&StopTrig_SpectralMeas_style+image.vi ‏700 KB

First: yes, the operation is correct.
Second: yes again. When you consider a multi-channel acquisition, your sampling rate must be shared among the channels.
Third: when you specify a list of channels you want to acquire from, the channel considered for analog triggering is the first you put in the list.
Connect the error clusters whenever you can,in particular when you are dealing with I/O operations.
    Bye!

  • This is the regular status of the memory of my macbook pro. Do you think I need a RAM upgrade?

    Hi there,
I'm hoping to seek the expert views of the community here.
I have a MacBook Pro, Late 2011, 17 inch. Running latest version of Mavericks. Speed seems to have slowed somewhat, perhaps since I upgraded to Mavericks, but not certain about that. Based on my research of the Apple communities, I suspect that I may benefit from a RAM upgrade.
Attached are a few screen shots to assist:
Based on what I have researched in the community, the fact that I have used 3.99GB of 4.00GB, and have used 5.63GB of Virtual memory, seems to suggest to me that I have well and truly maxed out my RAM. Also there is a high number of read ins/outs (but it had been a wheile since I last did a restart on the MBP (if that has any effect on these numbers here).
I have also read that my model of MacBook Pro is upgradeable to 16GB of RAM (2 x 8GB).
Thoughts and views from the community would be greatly appreciated. Will additional RAM help the speed and performance of my MacBook Pro?
    Many thanks.

More RAM is always a Prudent move...
