Multi-day events in month/year view

I still use a paper year-planner because I can use it to more clearly visualise the shape and pattern of a month's (or the whole year's) major events: conferences, holidays, area meetings, upcoming bank-holidays and so on.
I put everything in my year-planner, but it helps me visualise and plan. When something lasts a few days, I write with large letters across all the days, or even use arrows to show the extent of the event if it's really big. Personal items go in in red, and business in black.
I wondered whether there might be a way to do a similar thing in iCal? Rather than have small text or even (as Outlook used to do) just put a little blue box in the day if anything was scheduled: hopeless if you want to visualise more than a very occasional appointment.
Thanks,
David

I guess I understand now but I don't have an answer.
To paraphrase: you want the effect that you see in week view reflected in month view; start time to end time clearly marked but shrunken in size when displaying the entire month.
I agree it seems natural to view a month that way, and I agree that a start time in month view doesn't really indicate the gravity of what you see in week view. Along the same lines, I wish that there was an option to scroll a week at a time rather than toggle month to month, so I understand what you mean about feeling constrained in what you display. That's the only Outlook feature that I'm a bit jealous of, but even Outlook aggravates me because it won't put the current week into the middle of the screen; I have to scroll every time I open it because the current month is centered like iCal.
Something I've done to make an event more prominent is check the all-day box, then write details of significance, like specific times, into the note. A possible workaround might be to use a colour that stands out for a calendar, that you create specifically to hold and indicate day wrap-around events so you know to toggle week view if you see that colour. Neither elegant.

  • Multi day events in Month View.

Multi day events in month view only display on the first day. Checking all day event fixes this, but none of my multi day events are in fact all day. If I sync with my iphone, it does mark both days on the multi day event in month view.
In week view they display correctly, but I like to have the month drawn out.
I am surprised to come across this hang up. Other calendars I have used always displayed such events across the month view.
Is this a bug or lack of feature?

Try setting it as a recurring event (yeah, I know, it's not a great solution, but it gets the job done)

  • How can you view multi day events in month view without having to check the "all-day" box?

I have multi-day events that I would like to be able to view in the month view.  The only way that I have found to do this is to make the event a "all-day" event.  Is there another way to view these events in month view, or am I stuck?

It shows multi-day events that are "all-day" events.
But for a non "all-day" event that happens to span multiple days, it only shows the first day

  • Why won't iCal display multi-day events in month view?

This is frustrating. If someone sends me a calendar event that lasts multiple days from Calendar software that ACTUALLY WORKS  (hint hint hint Google Calendar, Outlook), and if I accept this event, it only displays the FIRST DAY of the event in iCal's month view. It should put a solid bar through every date included in the duration of the event. How is it that this has not been fixed yet???

  • Multi-day events only showing up on first day of event in year view

There are several things about iCal that I find annoying (makes me miss my old Palm PDA sometimes), such as being able to set my own default meeting times, meetings being defaulted to all-day, no way to connect a contact to the event without having to invite them to join (my old Palm did this and it was a very useful tool). Each of these has many discussions already on these topics with a solution (except adding a contact to an event), such as simply typing in the meeting time when you setup the event.
However, I can't find a discussion on the following question, and therefore no solution. Hope someone out there knows the answer:
Why do Multi-day events only show up on the first day of the event in year view, and is there a way to change it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Greetings,
Perhaps I'm not setting up my events as you are but I see a color for each day of my multi-day event.
    My steps:
    1. Add a multi-day event to iCal:
    2. Switch to Year view and observe the matching date range (26th - 29th):
    Suggestions:
Make sure you have all your updates installed (Apple > Software Update).
Toggle the "all day" check box for the events in question and see if that makes the events show up in Year view.
If that doesn't help, please provide a screen shot of the edit window of the event in question so we can see how you have it configured:
    Cheers!

  • Month view does not show Multi Day events

I know there has been a few post about this subject, but I've found no answer. Is there a fix for this problem? Multi Day events (Not All Day) only show up on the first day in month view (fine in week view). BUT ... if you print the month view the event shows on all the days, weird. I think I am going to be forced to go to a Microsoft product if this can't be resolved. I is too easy to double book appointments if you think that day is clear. Please help.

I've just come across this most dangerous of flaws. I wonder how Apple staff manage multiple-day events without missing anything.
I've submitted the following to iCal Feedback:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ical.html
Events (not all-day) starting on one day and finishing on another do not show up properly in iCal month view. This is because you only show the start time, which is really confusing when trying to organise diaries.
The iPhone month list view would be a model to sort this out, showing start time on the first day, "Ends" on the last day and "All Day" on intermediary days.
Please sort this out as this is where Outlook really beats Mac.

  • Why multi day events are shown only on the first day in calendar (in month view)

Why multi day events are shown only on the first day in calendar (in month view)?

Figured it out - the event has to be marked as full day event in order to be shown in monthly calendar. Disregard my question.

  • ICal multi-day (not all day) event  in Month view not displayed over days

What is it when I have an event that starts on a Wednesday and 4:00pm and goes to Friday at 6:00pm (not clicked as an All Day Event), (in Month view) the only day showing the event is the first day?! Shouldn't it show it over the course of the 3 days!? Outlook does that (I can't believe I just referenced Outlook in an Apple Discussion... in a positive light no less). Is it a setting?

Yes, Apple any help for this would be great. The only way I've come to work around is to use multiple events. So for a flight out of town would be one event, and the return another. I would create a third event then for the actual time out of town. There must be some way to easily fix this.

  • Timed muti day event in month view

Can someone please help. I need help with the 'month' display of iCal. If I have a multi-day event, iCal shows solid bar between the start day and the end day.
However, if a start time on the first day of the multi-day event is entered, it is only this first day which shows up in the month view. There is no solid bar covering all the days and at only a glance of the 'month' view, it looks like the multi-day event is actually just a single-day event.
    Can someone please help.
    Thanks

If it has a start time iCal doesn't consider it a multi-day event, so in month view only displays it on a single day, which is definitely misleading. You should probably tell Apple's OS X Feedback about it.

  • How to View Multi-Day Events on iPad Calendar?

I am using the iPad, 3rd generation and new MacBook Pro Retina with Mountain Lion.  My "Home" calendar is synchnoized between the two with iCloud.  I have two options when entering multi-day events: enter them as an all-day event or enter them with specific start and stop times over multiple days.  I prefer to enter specific times because all-day events only appear as headers in calendar view on my Mac.  I prefer to see the times highlighted by the color of the calendar legend.  I often miss the headers when scanning days.
Here is my problem.  On the Mac, in Month view, multi-day events appears as a higlighted stroke over multiple days.  On the iPad, only the starting day of the event is highlighted.  All-day events do appear over multiple days, but I need the start times.  Is it possible to have multi-day events with times to appear as highlighted strokes over multiple days?
    Thank you,

    You are correct; as fair as i am aware apple should be giving us an option in the next couple of updates to keep longer history of iCal events;
There is another way however it will more then likely cause double ups and errors: If you want the steps for that let me know.

  • Easy way to enter multi-day events in Calendar 7.0 (Mavericks)?

I need to create a bunch of multi-day events in Calendar (7.0 under Mavericks)
I think that I had discovered an easy way to do this under Mountain Lion -- double click on the day in Month view, type the name of the event, then type a date range, and hey! Presto!! Calendar created the multi-day event without my having to move the cursor and click to select start and end days in the little calendars.
I can't make that work w/ Calendar 7.0 under Mavericks -- has this changed?  I've tried all variations of dates that I can think of - just the numerals for the days (13-19); numerals for month & days (7/13-7/19); including the year (7/13/14-7/19/2014); month names instead of numerals; with and without spaces around the hyphens..
I had Mountain Lion for only a couple of weeks on a new computer before I upgraded to Mavericks, so I don't remember exactly what I'd done in Calendar to enter all the info after double-clicking on a day & have the multi-day entry be created automagically
    Thanks for any help
(I'm tying to find any reasons for keeping on using Calendar. I've used iCal for 10+ years to organize myself and my household, but I'm having a REALLY hard time w/ Calendar 7.0 under Mavericks -- no lines between days in month view makes it really hard to tell at a glance which events are on which days, especially if there are a lot of mult-day events; time for timed events after the event in smaller & pale gray letters is hard to see; little colored dots next to events are almost impossible to tell which color so which calendar an event belongs to (I have 11 Calendars); ...)

    Tyrone,
The week view affords some of the capability that you are looking for.
    Experiment with these suggestions:
    1. Select the week view.
    2. Choose the number of days that you want to display by selecting (Option +  + 1), (Option +  + 2), (Option +  + 3)...and so forth for the number of days desired for a week display of 1/2/3/4/5/6/7 days. Make sure the mini calendar window is displayed and you will see the number of gray days change accordingly.
    3. Create a new item on Wednesday (Double click on the start point) and drag to your desired length, and if the event falls over the weekend change the display length as indicated in step 2 above, and drag the event to the end time.
Let me know if you get the hang of what I am trying to describe. It is easier to accomplish than it is to describe.
    ;~)

  • ICal multi day event not showing on screen

Help ! When using iCal, I am stumped as to how to make multi day events show up on the appropriate days .... I enter an event for say 3 days, on my screen I see it in iCal only on day one, it does not show up on day two or three however when I print my calendar, it does print on all the appropriate days. Is there a setting to change so it shows up on my screen on all the days like it does when I print ? Thanks!

    Hi there,
So, that's in Week or Month view you are talking about?? ... it only shows on the first day?
Probably stating the obvious, but I'm assuming you are ticking the "All Day" box when you enter the Event?
If you don't, but leave a time, say 10pm, and have a start date of the 18th and an end date of the 20th, say - it'll display only on the 18th (albeit with the 10pm time slot - not as an all day Event), but will print on all three days - ie 18/19/20th

  • When I get an ICS from Outlook that is a multi-day event it populates my iCal as a single day and since I am not the owner I cannot edit the ICS.

When I get an ICS from Outlook Express (Office is PC based) that is a multi-day event, it populates my iCal as a single day and since I am not the owner I cannot edit the ICS. I have to delete it and send a "decline notice" to the sender and re-enter it so I can put in multiple day events. Help!

If you are running Tiger, you don't have time machine.
You need to get something like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner (sorry, I don't have a handy link for CCC but you can Google it to get their site) to make a clone of your drive on the external and then do incremental backups.  The free versions do a lot and you can upgrade to the full-service versions for small change if you need more.  The one time I used SuperDuper! for cloning a volume it worked just fine.
(My backup application is the last PPC capable version of Retrospect, which does a credible job, or has over the past ten-twelve years.)

How can I see more than 6 all day events in the week view without scrolling?  I need to see all of my all day events at once.  I use this for scheduling and comparing of # invoices.  Going back and forth to scroll is cumbersome.  I just want to be able to expand the top section so I can see everything at once.

    Any ideas, anyone?
