Multi finger gestures for the original iPad in

Are multifinger gestures like pinch to home screen available for the original iPad under ios5? They don't seem to be working after I updated to ios5 and I don't see any way to enable them under settings.

These features are currently only available on the iPad 2 despite no such advertisement otherwise!

It would appear that apple has managed to p1ss off alot of ipad one users in one fowl swoop, what makes it worse is that fact we were the early adoptors who got asked, why do you want a big iphone for? and then spent time showing people how good it was! actually promoting it for apple! and then to get this kick in the teeth is frustrating! i wish i had known about xcode before!

clearly they were planning on releasing this update to us, otherwise on the spalsh screen it would have stated ipad 2 only, note in the sentence above it states it CLEARLY makes a reference to ipad 2 for airplay, so, whatever the problem, they can fix it and they know it works!

There was an iClops project for awhile, but the folks abandoned the idea, I heard for possible legal reasons.
There is an app, Camera for iPad, that lets you use the iPhone's better resolution camera to take photos for other iOS devices. But it does not work with any video apps. I am not sure why I would take photos with an iPhone for the iPad, unless it was for later viwing on the larger display.

Is there any way to extend the length of the Apple component AV cable for the original iPad?

I have an original iPad, but the component video cable is too short to really do any good. Can it somehow be extended. It would really be useful if there was an adapter for the 30-pin connector that goes into the iPad itself so that one wire could extend the AV cable another 10-15 feet. I know of no such adapter. Is there one out there?
My goal is to stream YouTube videos from my iPad to my Samsung HDTV. I guess I could buy an Apple TV and do it wirelessly through my Airport Expresses.

Have you been able to get this cable to work on your iPad? I just went out and bought this cable so I could stream YouTube, Netflix and my other video on my iPad and the component cable wasn't working. I went back to my Apple store and replaced it with the composite video cable and everything works fine. I do not think that the component cable works with the original iPad because its output is not HD. Anyhow, you should be able to buy extender type cables at any Radio Shack, or any audio/video retailer. Look in the cables section. keep in mind you'll need both Audio cable and component video cable extended cables to increase the distance you are using these at. Keep in mind, also, that the iPad is basically useless while playing video. You can't multitask while watching the video because,depending on what apps you have that do video mirroring, you'll end up leaving the video and whatever app you're working in will show up on your TV screen. When I watch video I just leave my iPad close by the TV and walk up to it to play or pause video. Can't use it for anything else while the movie is playing, anyway. ;)

I am trying to download the DirectTV app that comes up in the app store to my ipad and get message that iOS version 6.1 is required. Apple controls the iTunes store and decides what apps get in. They could force app developers to have their apps work with older iOS systems, but instead, it's in apples best interest to force you to go buy a new tablet every three years. Apple doesn't care that iPad1 owners are the ones that made the tablet successful for apple. If they cared about their customers, if they wanted brand loyalty, apple would offer to buy back ipad1s for a decent amount that could be put toward a newer iPad. Apple lost my business. If 'technology dictates' that I have to get a new tablet every three years, I'm gonna go with a less expensive other brand.

Plug it into your syncing computer, open iTunes, click on the name of your device and on the Summary tab (I believe it is) you'll see the option to download and update your device.
Personally, I'd recommend syncing and backing up your device, THEN update. just in case something goes wrong you have good recent backup.

I have been told my original iPad will no longer receive software updates after iOS 7 comes out. Furthermore, I was told I would no longer be able to purchase apps and that the apps I have would no longer receive updates making my iPad totally useless. Is all of this correct?

I imagine that it would be up to the software developers to make sure that their apps will still work with iOS 5.1.1 which is the highest upgrade for the original iPad. So as long as apps are available for iOS 5 you will still be able to purchase them.
If your iPad functions today with the apps that you already have on it, it will still work when iOS 7 is released. A new software upgrade has no bearing on whether your iPad will still be functional. It just will not be able to download new apps that require iOS 6 or iOS 7.

Is the iPad 2 charger the same as the charger for the original iPhone?

My understanding is that the charger that comes with the iPad 2 is more powerful and will charge the iPad 2 more quickly than will the charger that comes with the iPhone 4. However, the iPad 2 charger is the same shape as the charger that came with the original iPhone. Does anyone know whether the iPad 2 charger and the original iPhone charger are identical in function? (BTW, my understanding is that the iPad 2 charger will not charge the iPhone 4 faster than that phone's charger will).

No, they're not the same. I compared mine awhile back and while they're the same shape, the iPad 2 one has writing on it that says "10 W USB Adapter". The one for the original iPhone doesn't have that writing, but if you compare the detailed input-output information, it does show that it is less powerful.
I believe that's why Apple changed to the two different sizes, so you can quickly determine which are for "phone" type devices and which are for "larger" type devices.
