Multi-master over WAN ?

When will Multi-Master over WAN being supported ?
Will it be in 5.2, and when will this release
being distributed ?

Yes...it'll be in 5.2 which is scheduled for the end of the calendar year (around December...).
A beta version will probably be available sooner (may be just to selected customers though).

Ludovic.

• Multi-Master Replication over the WAN

DS verison: 5.1 sp1
Did any one implement multi-master replication across the WAN or different IP subnets?

Sun does mention about DS 5.2 being better than DS 5.1 in WAN based Muli-Master replication with respect to replication performance. I wanted to see if any one out there had implemented (or even played with this topology in their labs) it with out any major hickups.
Thank you!

• DS 5.1 "half" multi-master replication

I realize the situation described below is not the best method, but those decisions were out of my hands.
I have two servers in two datacenters (serverA and serverB). Both servers are set as multi-masters within the console. However, due to replication over WAN restrictions, there is only one replication agreement from serverA to serverB (no agreement from serverB to serverA). All writes are directed to serverA and serverB is not used by any clients for queries. ServerB is intended as a hot failover should we need it (again, don't ask, not my decision).
We have been experiencing the second host (serverB) randomly crashing. There are no indications within the logs (of course minimal error logging is on).
My bet is the crashing is due to the "half" nature of this multi-master set up. Has anyone else seen or can confirm this? Again, yes I know this is not the ideal way to go...sometimes you just have to do what you're told.
Thanks

One thing to check would be the replication logs of
the master1 server to see if it is having
difficulties prior to the crash of master2.
Will have to check the logs. The logging level is usually turned fairly low due to the number of changes and utilization on the server (master1 not master2).
Is master2 used for anything else (application
queries or other read-transactions)? The thinking
being that system utilization or excessive
connections could be causing issues ...Master2 is not used for anything. No queries other than regular monitoring queries ("Can you hear me?") We have had one of our dedicated consumers crash similar to this, but only once not the number of times (up to about 6+ over the past month) the secondary master has crashed.
The server is a Sun 480R running Solaris 8. The servers in the farm are supposed to be near-identical. It has come to the point where I am debating whether it is a replication problem (as I noted in my original post) or the system just needs to be rebuilt.

• Multi-master access from separate DSCC views

Hi,
I have two DS6.2 installations - one in test, one in production. They are both multi-master (two masters) environments.
In test I can run DSCC on both masters, and can manage both from each DSCC.
However, in production I can only access both masters from one DSCC at a time. If I enable access on the second DSCC, then the first DSCC shows them in red as Inaccessible until I "Enable Access" which works ok, but then the second DSCC shows them as inaccessible.
I have been over the configs, and they appear the same in test & production.
Does anyone know what could be stopping the production instances from being managed by more than one DSCC?
Thanks.
Terry.

Replicating the ADS instance, ie cn=dscc is not supported and not supposed to work so what you are trying to do is futile.

• Multi Master Site replication with Snapshot features

Dear,
I am implementing a Multi Master site replication. I want to replicate Table A in MASTER SITE A to Table A in MASTER SITE B.
However, I don't want all the data from MASTER SITE A to be propagated to MASTER SITE B.I may want data that belongs to a certain criteria only to be replicated over.
I know I can achieve this in a snapshot site replication. But can this be done in a Multi Master Site replication too ?

Hai,
As far under my observation, the tables that is marked for a replication from the MASTER SITE to Child Site is an exact replica of data. Your case could be achieved only thru SNAPSHOT VIEWS/GROUPS

A customer has several offices. Each office has a separate Exchange Server. The partner was considering a single Unity deployment connected to all of the exchange servers over the WAN, but has decided against that because the latency of the WAN is too high to do this. They are looking for a best practice way of deploying Unity for these multiple Exchange servers at multiple sites. This might mean a separate Unity server for each exchange server at each site .
However, we’re wondering if there is a better way to do this. With multiple unity servers we’ll likely have different prefixes for each unity server at each location . This is something that the customer would like to avoid. We’re wondering if there any best practices for a deployment like this that we can offer as options for the customer.

I have found some related information but really customer is altogether looking for an option away from Exchange networking over WAN.
I found:
“Multi-Site WAN with Distributed Messaging”
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/5x/design/guide/5xcudg040.html#wp1077309
“Networking Options Requirements for Cisco Unity”
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/prod_installation_guides_list.html
Design Guide for Cisco Unity also talk as much is there in the first URL.
Please Help!

This may be counter to your customer's desire or requirements but I must ask the question. Has the customer considered Unity Connection vs. Unity? Granted, Unity Connection provides integrated messaging whereas Unity is the unified messaging application; however, CUC has become Cisco's flagship messaging product over the last couple of years and I only see this expanding to be honest. So, for new installs - I push hard on Unity Connection. Sometimes, it's a sell but sometimes the customer has a hard requirement for UM and thus you have to go with UM. In your scenario, your customer could potentially save a LARGE amount of money as CUC is not dependent upon Exchange at all; however, you still have the option to tie into Exchange 2003/2007 as an external service where users can access messages in a 3rd-party message store and also access calendar data and so forth. The platform is very feature rich. Many of my current Unity customers are migrating off of the platform to the more "agnostic" CUC platform to avoid issues caused by such dependence on AD/Exchange. In addition, as Microsoft continues to develop and push it's own UM solution - integration for Unity is being forced to change (ex: changes to MAPI in 2010 caused problems for Cisco and required them to rework a bit of the underpinning integration points between Unity and Exchange). With CUC, you also have the flexibility to implment a dial plan within voicemail system itself...not to mention it is extremely scalable.

• DS 5 SP1 multi-master replication

I am running DS5 SP1 on Solaris 8 with the recommended patch set. I am
using replica id 1 for master1 and replica id 2 for master2.
I am replicating 7 nodes in a multi-master scenario. I start with about
1000 base entries in each db node, and add approximately 1000 to each
node via a meta directory interface to master1. I run 9 passes, so I am
adding approximately 10,000 entries to each node over the course of the
passes.
Occasionally, inconsistently, and without explanation, slapd stops on my
master1 (sometimes master2). I have successfully run through all passes
at differing times, and then it happens. There is no specific error
message indicating it has died, but a ps reveals that it is no longer
running. Once I restart it, the error log indicates that the directory
had a disorderly shutdown. It has the nasty effect of resetting my
changelogs to 0 and requiring me to reinitialize my replication
agreements. Below is a relevant excerpt from my error log, hopefully
someone can give me some insight as to why this is happening . . . . .

Hi Jennifer,
There's nothing in the logs that explain why your server is disappearing.
I think that the reseting of the changelog is a known problem that should be fixed in 5.0SP2 and is fixed in iDS 5.1 which is now available.
Just one quick question, when you say that you have 7 nodes, you mean 7 container entries or 7 suffixes that are separated replication areas ?
Regards,
Ludovic.

any help is appreciated .

As Ludovic mentioned, after you load data to the first master server, you have to initialize your second server (either it's master or read-only replica) in two ways:
1) offline (with server down)
in server 1: do db2ldif -r and save the output to file
in server 2: do ldif2db using the saved file
2) online: using GUI
I don't think that you need copy over the user schema, which should be able to replicated during replication. (please correct if wrong)

• CCX 8.5 in HA over WAN on Island Mode

Hi guys,
Does anyone know what will happen with CCX 8.5 in HA over WAN configuration goes to island mode?
So consider the following setup
Site A Site B
CUCM Node --- WAN --- CUCM Node
CCX Primary CCX Standby
Each site have their own local voice gateway and sets of agents.
The SRND covers that if 10 consecutive heartbeat is lost then a failover will be triggered.
However the SRND does not cover the scenario if the WAN is totally cut and Site A and Site B is completely isolated from each other.
Does anyone know what will happen in this situation? Will both CCX Node become Primary and operate in its own right (just like Unity Connection cluster when they go to island mode)?
Kind regards
Daniel

2) The UCCX servers will connect to the CUCM Node that they can connect
to for call processing
3) The calls that get to the respective UCCX servers will go to the
respective agents
When the WAN Link is restored:
1) The Nodes will decide which node is more "qualified" to become the
master node, this is generally Node 1 aka the first node that was built
in the cluster
2) The CAD Agents connected to the node that becomes the secondary will
fail over to Node 1 to begin accepting calls from it
3) All of the calls that the new master Node were processing will not
have any negative affect as they will continue to be processed by UCCX
4) The calls that are in queue for the node that becomes the slave in
the cluster will be dropped

• Problem in creation of Multi-master

I created master group in replication.
I have decided to use multi-master replication and because of that I add another site to my first master site. But when I do that in OEM ,I encunter to a problem
called that invalid compatible version ....
My Oracle Version is 9.2 and compatible parameter in my oracle is 9.2.0.0.0
It is kind of everybody to help me.

its due to the number ranges that is specified in the partner determination ... chech what is the number range assigned in the parner determination ,,, so once u check that u have to manually enter the number between that range only .. this should solve ur problem...
path to check the number range is as below :
spro-img-logistic generalbusiness partner-customers---define account groups and field selection ---
at this point click position button at the bottom and give ur account group .. select ur account group and click detail button .. now inside that u can see the specified number range .. dafault is 08 ( means u can specify between 400000 to 499999)..
and some times u may not have defined number range... check urs and create accordingly ... this should solve ur problem...
rewards if solved ..
thank you

• Multi-Master replication problems

Multi Master Servers consists of 2 servers.
For this, the Sync function is satisfied.
But I think it's some problems.
If Master 2 Server is dead, only Master 1 saves updated data.
Master 2 starts service again after recovery.
At that time, if clients try to read the data before master 1 and master 2 make sync, isn’t it any problem?
(Because Master 2 data is not update.I know that auto sync time is not immediately ).
How can i solve thie problem.
Please give me the answer.

You will need to manually trigger Master 1 to send the update to Master 2. In worst case, you may need to re-initialize Master 2.

• Sharing an iTunes Library over WAN?

Sorry if this question has been asked before but my searching of the forum here has only seemed to turn up questions and anwswers on sharing over a local network. Here is my question.
Is it possible to share an iTunes library over the internet? And if so, how? If it isn't I'd like to know so I can stop trying to track down how to do this.
I have a Titanium G4 at home running iTunes 6.01 using a cable modem and router. The router firewall has been setup with the proper ports for iTunes and FTP (FTP works fine). My work computer is a G5 running iTunes 6.01 connected via a DSL modem/router.
I have no other issues connecting to my home computer from work, but I can't see my shared music at home on my work computer.
Thanks for any info.

Issue solved. Here is what I did. I setup my Mac at home so I could connect at work. Inside the iTunes library on my work Mac I created an alias to the iTunes Music folder on my home Mac. Since my library at home and work are exactly the same iTunes on my work Mac sees a local library file but is streaming the music over WAN from my Mac at home.
The are some stops and starts as the connection is over WAN, but it's pretty smooth. Do not know what will happen if I need to add or subtract from the library on either Mac.
Just bringing this to the front in case anyone is interested in trying it themselves.

• Problem in multi master replication creation using DBA Studio -- replication

Hi,
I am trying to create multi master replication using DBA studio but facing following problem at the time of master group creation.
ORA-04052 error occured when looking up remote object SYS.SYS@CBOLDATA
ORA-00604 error occured at recursive SQL level 2
ORA-01017 invalid username/password, logon denied
ORA-02063 preceding line from CBOLDATA
If you want to know how I am trying the whole thing then here is the way I am doing comfiguration.
First I have created master site which is created successfully.
Here I have used two database named UPP817 & CBOLDATA
Step of master site creation is followed like this.
1. Master Site addition (Added both UPP817 & CBOLDATA using SYSTEM username)
2. Default User (No change is done, Default schema and password taken)
3. Master Site Schema (Added SCOTT/tiger)
4. Scheduled Link (No change is done, Default values taken)
5. Purge (No change is done, Default values taken)
6. Finished successfully
Master group creation there is three option available
1. General (Only value of Name is given)
2. Object (No object added)
3. Master Sites (It takes UPP817 by default as a master defination site then as a Master Site I have added CBOLDATA)
when I pressed on Create It gives me the error listed above.
I really appreceate your help
Mukesh

Create public database link at master site database for CBOLDATA.
Also see that you are using SNMP protocol and Oracle Pipe at both
databases. This will be usefull while making replication from remote
place.
I hope this will work.

• Airport Extreme and External Hard Drive. Backup over WAN?

Hi
I'm new to Mac's and just got a macbook air and a airport extreme. I connected my external hard (toshiba) drive to the AE and my computer will recognize it, but when I try to connect to it using Time Machine my external hard drive is not recognized as a device that I can backup to over my WAN. I'm not sure if this is possible, but I would like to be able to backup over the WAN if it is possible. Is it possible to backup using time machine over WAN using an AE and a non apple external hard drive?

Time Machine cannot backup to a hard drive unless it is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+.
You have me scratching my head about backing up through the WAN port. Normally, the WAN port would be used for a connection from a modem.....or another router.
However, if you have the AirPort Extreme configured to connect to another router via Ethernet, and the AirPort Extreme is set to operate in Bridge Mode, then you don't have a WAN port, they are all LAN ports, so it would not matter which of the ports that you used.

• Time Capsule 2TB missing "Share Disks over WAN" option

I bought a time capsule about a month ago. Setup was no problem. Have a MobileMe account. Successfully setup remote access using MobileMe. Needed to select "Share Disks Over WAN" under the file sharing tab which is under the disk tab in setup in order to make it work.
Bought another time capsule yesterday and trying to setup in another location. This model does not have that "Share Disks Over WAN" option. Am I missing something? Did Apple make a change? I am not able to access this new drive remotely now, even with my MobileMe account active.

"As I write this, I am using my wife's iPad to browse files and folders on the Time Capsule disk. I can switch over to the disk attached to the AirPort Extreme with a single tap."
Awesome! Hopefully I will have the same luck as you!
"I said that Filebrowser will do a very nice job. One of my support policies is that I never offer advice or instructions unless I have done it myself. "
Well that's good to know going forward!
"Make sense?"
Yep - no confusion whatsoever.
