Multi-Output FAIL

I am a fan of multi-outputting all my plug-ins to economize on my RAM and CPU resources. I moved from Cubase to Logic 3 years ago, but am now contemplating going back to Cubase because Logic Pro hasn't really solved the Multi-output thing yet, and has become a huge drain on my workflow when working with 50+ tracks.
1) When creating aux tracks in the Mixer to correspond with the Multi-output tracks in the arrange page, they always get scramble when leaving the Mixer window. So when you are, for example, done editing in the Piano Roll and go back to the Mixer, you are lost as to where you track is amongs the 50 tracks there. However, when you click on "Arrange" it does put them back in order, but you cannot then go view another window without them scrambling again.
2) You have to rename all your tracks. Even if I name the tracks in the arrange window, the corresponding tracks in the Mixer window remain unamed, so you have to go back and forth to name all your tracks. Now top that off with that the tracks get scrambled everytime you leave the Mixer window and you are looking at a long, tough job just to get organized.
Anybody out there recognize my troubles here? Anyone know if there is a fix to this or perhaps the next Logic update will solve this? Can anyone forward this to the programmers at Logic and suggest to put it on their next "to do" list?
Thanks,
Alexander
PS: also, being able to export audio to movie in 64-bit should be on a list as well

Nope, no workaround, because if you assign the aux channel to a track, it's not a MIDI track.
So in this case, with extra outputs, there is no direct connotation between a part on MIDI channel 3, and an auxilliary output that that part is on (which could be any of them).
If you want to have a dedicated single channel strip, the solution is easy - don't use the EXS24 in multioutput mode, use multiple instances with the same sample set loaded (they share RAM so the samples are only loaded once). Hey presto, a dedicated channel for each part.

  • How to use airplay speakers in multi-output device without crackling audio?

    Hi,
I would like to mirror the audio output from my mac mini to the built-in output and an airplay speaker.
Therefore I added a Multi-Output Device containing  the Built-in- and Airplay output, as soon as I activate the airplay speaker the sound is mirrored but unfortunately always with a crackling sound coming of the speakers set as "slave Device"... only the Device set as "Master Device" has clear sound, doesn't matter if it's the airplay speaker or the speaker (or headphone) directly connected to the built-in output.
I've tested this with a mac mini and an mac book air as audio source, same problem. Both were running Mac OS V. 10.9.2.
Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?

I'm using a 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks and current Apple TV (MD199HK/A 3rd generation) when trying to output audio to both Apple TV and built-in output simultaneously I suffer crackling and popping. I have this issue once I use Audio MIDI Setup (under utilities) to create a Multi-Output Devise. Once I use this multi-output devise made up of Apple TV and Built-In Output to get my music to both output devises at once BUT I get crackling sound on either Spotify or iTunes.
I've worked around this issue by using AirParrot. I select Apple TV in AirParrot with Audio enabled. The Apple TV then takes all audio output, then I select the 'Multi-Output Devise created in 'Audio MIDI Setup' and I have playback through Apple TV and Built-In Output without any crackling or popping.
Only minor outstanding issue is that whatever scenario I then run Audio Midi Setup in terms of setting various devises as Master Clock and resampling of sub devise I can't perfect the sync between Apple TV audio output and my local Macbook Pro, but close enough with the slightest hint of echo. Plenty of forums discussing Word Clock sync which is out of my league. Un-ticking drift correction on the 'AirParrot' audio output has them close enough, depends on how easily you can hear your apple TV output from the room where your Macbook Pro is and vice versa.

  • Automation not working in multi output stereo?

I changed my stereo outputs into multi output stereo and noticed that the volume automation is not being read any more. All the volume levels are still moving up and down but the sound itself stays at the same level. I tried out what would happen if I set them back to normal stereo and yes, the automation works again. Why is this?

  • The device is in use by another process - error - cannot select Multi Output Device - Mac OSX 10.8.2

    Dear Adobe Users!
    Please help!
I'm using Adobe Audition CS5.5 on a Mac - OSX 10.8.2 (latest version of Mountain Lion) and I'm trying to select a Multi-Output device.
This was working FINE last few days - today, I get an error. I've tried to re-install Adobe Audition and that hasn't fixed the problem. When it first started up it said it couldn't find any audio devices at all.
Please can you help? I'm getting a message saying the device is being used by another process - but it's not being used by anything else at all!
Hope you are able to help! I use the multi output device option so I can record what I can hear. I spent two days trying to sort that out after it all-of-a-sudden didn't work last Thursday.
Now just spent last two hours trying to get Adobe to recognise the Multi Output device - it's been working fine last few days!
Many thanks if you're able to help!
    - Rory

    Durin,
May have sussed it! It seems that Built-in output was the way to have it for Audition CS5.5 to record what I'm hearing! Yes, the multi-device needs to be used - but in another settings.
Here's how I have each section configured and it now works!
First of all, in Audition > Preferences > Audio Hardware:-
Then, on the Mac's OS - System Preferences > Sounds (input settings)
    Then Output settings :-
Then Midi Settings found in Finder > Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI set up
All now seems to be working! I'll let you know if anything further happens!
I was certain I had the output device as Multi Device Output on Adobe before, perhaps it should've been set to Built-in Audio all along. Anyway, I re-installed my Mac from Time Machine, logged in as another user and it worked under that profile, then logged back in as me - and am using the settings in the pics above and all seems to be working!
It's been a long week, perhaps I was just going around in circles and didn't actually test these particular settings yesterday in this order after all.
Thanks again for your help! Sorry if I've caused any confusion!

It appears the 10.0.2 update causes Logic to crash when bypassing multi-output Instruments.

The current 10.0.3 release appears to have corrected this issue.  Thanks Logic team for the fast fix.

  • Using iDrum as a multi-output instrument

    Hi all-
Maybe someone else uses iDrum as a drum sequencer/scratch drum instrument like me.
I can't seem to instantiate iDrum as a multi output instrument...only stereo.
I know how to do this well in PT, but it has eluded me so far in L8.
    I am:
Creating a new instrument track, selectin the i/o as iDrum and there is no multi output option as there is in ultrabeat.
It is probably something simple...usually is
    any help appreciated greatly!!

AFAIK, there is no multi-output support for iDrum with Logic 8, although you could select a multi-channel option in LP7.
What you can do is bounce pattern/song to separate .aiff files from the iDrum menu and reimport them on to audio tracks.

  • Can you generate separate audio tracks from a Multi-Output Instrument?

Is there a way to use the "export all tracks as audio files" function and have the multi-output assignments generate separate audio tracks? There doesn't appear to be a way to do this.
    Ideas?

I think you'll need to bounce them out, or record them via busses...

  • Logic 9 - EXS24 Multi Output not working correctly?

Ok, another EXS24 query from me.
I have a software instrument track with a multi output EXS24 inserted, I go into the edit panel and assign the output of the kick, snare etc to one of the auxes available. I create an aux track for each of these from the original software track (hitting the + button) and everything is ready to go.
What is then happening here is that the audio is routed correctly and being played back via each aux track, then it randomly plays each track back out through the main stereo output.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
Also whilst on the subject of the sampler. I recall that there was some option on Logic 8 to view which samples were being played from the sampler. When the midi note was triggered in the sequencer or by pressing a midi note on a keyboard the sample name would be highlighted, which was quite handy for instruments with lots of samples. Does anyone know how to turn this on in Logic 9?
    Cheers
    Bryan

  • 2012 Mac Mini - Using multi-output device?

I'm trying to get my Mini to output sound over HDMI and the headphone jack. This question has been asked before, but the answer wrongly claimed OSX didn't support it. The Audio MIDI Setup program (in the Utilities folder) does in fact let you set up a multi-output device that uses the headphone and hdmi out. But when I try to output sound with that device, I don't get anything.
Before I bought this computer, the Apple Store drone claimed this multi-output was possible. But this wouldn't be the first time I've talked to a complete idiot there.

    Some more updates:
using multi-output and having the line out set as master prevents 5.1 surround from being output on HDMI, which is fine for my use. When I have something plugged into the headphone jack (in my case wireless outdoor speakers) the settings app won't even allow the settings app to choose HDMI as the audio output device, which is also likely why HDMI can't be master in the MIDI app.
So to get 5.1 surround back for movies I need to unplug whatever's in the headphone jack and change the output device from the multi-output option to HDMI. It's sad my 6 year old PS3 handles this more elegantly and sensibly but at least I don't have to take back my Mini now

  • Can't freeze tracks on "multi output" instruments?

    Hi folks,
Just noticed that freezing tracks on "multi output" instances of instruments (Ultrabeat, EX24) is not an option. Am I missing something here?
    Thanks!

No, you're not missing anything, freeze doesn't work on Multi-out instruments.

  • Battery 4 Multi Output

    Hey gang,
I've been slowly trying to dissect Battery 4.
Loading multiple instances of Battery was tedious and CPU intensive, so I did some research on the matter of creating a multi output.
I read the NI manual - Load (e.g) Multi Output Stereo x16, create the AUX tracks, route the cells to the individual AUX tracks. Should be simple, right?
Now, you might want you know what I'm trying to do before you try to help me out.
I want to layer three identical samples and mix them individually in different respective tracks.
This is for a bassline, so I set the voices to 1, and drag the keyranges so they hit all notes on the keyboard, but I think this is where the issue lies.
When I have the three samples, one routed to master, second to 3/4 and the third to 5/6, they all either go through the master or through the 5/6 (not through each individual track I have routed them to). I tried muting them individually and found that only one is actually playing, usually this is the sample routed to 5/6.
Hope you find some sense in this rambling. Ask if something is unclear, and thanks in advance

Are you sure you've created additional tracks in Mixer for Battery 4 outputs (pressing "+" sign located on the main Battery 4 Channel Strip)? I route drum sounds quite often in a similar way and had no problems so far...

  • Kontakt 3 as a Multi-midi instrument? How? Multi-outputs?

I am having trouble getting Kontakt to work properly as a mutlii-output instrument with multi-midi inputs.
There are instructions in the manual and online but I seem to have some problems.
I create an Instrument track of Kontakt 3. I select 16 stereo output mode.
I open Kontakt 3 and create new mixer tracks to match the 16 stereo.
Problem 1: I cannot rename these new tracks.
Problem 2: I cannot assign outputs that seem correct. I look at config. on the mixer channel and I get "unassigned" or "plug-in output 9, 10..."
I go to the Logic Mixer and hit the + on the Konotakt Instrument Track and create new AUX tracks alongside the Instrument Track but this does not seem to help.
I really can't figure how to make the midi multi instrument in Logic such that I can send different midi channels to multiple instruments in Kontakt 3.
I create a multi instrument in Environment but where to I drag that cable to connect?
Sorry I am so lagging in understanding this but if there are some thngs I am missing please help.
Yes I can get a Koontakt 3 Instrument track to work and sound a single instrument but I need the multi midi and multi output option to work.
    Thanks,
    Dean

I setup my Kontakt 3 Multiple Output Instrument in Logic Pro 8 including the Logic Aux Channels.
This way is not so good,,, (sorry don't get me wrong )
... I just talking about my personal experience with Logic Pro
I Never use Multi outs workflow in my songs
the Multi outs strategy comes from other DAWs (expacially related with ProTools) that have hystorical limited nunbers of track in the Mixer. (or you must pay a lot of "bucks" to have 200 stereo tracks in Protools)
In Logic you have over than 500 straight tracks/Audio and instruments + 64 and maybe more Aux Busses...
As you can see the buss are limited related to the number of track
My personal advice is: use buss only for reverbs, Delays, and Multi grupoed tracks... and instead to use aux for multiouts instrument use single instances...
*about Kontkt 3 and Logic Pro there are 2 different additional working strategies*
    1) using single instances (this don't ask for more CPU power resource) but the Audio Units version of NI instruments are not so stable when used as multi instances...
SO: Export as Audio the allready completed orchestral parts.
Using Audio track in Logic is always a good idea because Logic Pro have 255 *Stereo Audio tracks*
    2) using Kontakt 3 as Standalone allow you to use more Ram (logic stops to work with more than 2.7GB physically adressed
SO: you can use IacBus to route Midi signal direct to Kontakt 3
All of the sudden I'm not able to freeze my Kontakt Multi Instrument anymore (the other tracks still show the freeze function).
The "freeze" works only on the tracks (obviously, Freeze cannot and "will never" works on AUX/BUS) this is one of the majior reasons that makes me able to suggest you to avoid Multi Outs Instruments strategy
What can I do to get around this problem? Please help me out!
I can only add that is not a good idea to use Logic in the same way as Protools or Cubase
    Logic Pro is different
you need to adapt your working in progress strategy to achieve the best result
you have more than 500 Audio and instrument tracks...
    I suggest to use it...
I'm sure that you never will be able to use all 500 tracks in une song... BUT LOGIC can DO THAT!!!
I suggest to stay focused to the Logic Mixer: it is a great pieace of software thecnology... it is a REAL hardware mixer that has been ported inside the best professional Audio software...
Logic Pro is very near to a REAL HARDWARE RECORDING STUDIO Mixing consolle ENVIRONMENT! (including Cables, Inserts and AUX capabilities)
*about 600 Stereo Audio Channels and Aux/buss are ready to be used in Logic PRO to realize your songs!*
if you need more than 600 stereo tracks... feel free to ask me... I will try to find a way to solve your issue
    hope this helps
    Thanks

  • Working with drum designer drums - multi-output

    Hi all,
I am trying to create a software Inst. using multi-output drum designer - so I ...
    - create new software Inst. track
    - then set it to drum kit designer > multi-output
    - then choose a set - studio kit
    - record some midi drums
Q: How do I setup the drum track & mixer to have multi-output - so I can have separate mix tracks for hat - snare kick etc.

    I was told to :
Open the Mixer and use the + button on the instrument channel strip to start adding channels.
    and that worked well!

  • Multi output sound device and 5.1 sound

    Hi,
    I have following setup:
TV is connected to the Mac Mini, with HDMI Cable.
Amplifier (5.1) is connected to the Mac Mini, with Toslink cable.
In addition to that TV can pass sound to amplifier through another toslink cable.
    Currently my setup works perfectly:
When I set sound output to HDMI, TV recognizes 5.1 sound (also it can be passed to the amplifier).
When I set sound output to digital audio, amplifier gets 5.1 sound.
Note: 5.1 sound works when I play movies from VLC. In audio setup (in preferences and midi setup) there is only possibility to have 2 channels.
What I want to do is to have the same output to both devices.
I created multi output device, for HDMI and digital audio, and devices get only stereo sound.

Thank for your reply, however it didn't solve my problem.
I can send surround sound over hdmi to TV, and then TV can send it to the amplifier.
What I can not do is to send surround sound directly from Mac Mini to TV (via HDMI) + amplifier (via toslink) - so that I can switch off TV and have sound on amplifier.
I also have the multichannel options options greyed out (as described in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19584051). But what I am talking about is sending sound as Dolby (which can be done with VLC), not PCM.

  • RMX in Logic 8 as multi-timbral or multi-output?

    Hi:
I downloaded the latest RMX for Logic 8. ( I've used RMX in Logic 7 a lot).
But, I'm not sure how to use it. If I open RMX as a multi-TIMBRAL instrument, 8 tracks show up in my arrange window, but they don't seem linked to RMX like in Logic 7 (e.g. midi tracks). Parts aren't ruted to them, and messing wif the RMX mixer doesn't seem to help.
And, if I open RMX as a multi-OUTPUT and set up some auxes with the + button, RMX channels 2-8 don't play through the auxes. It's as if they are not there. And there's no additional channels in the track windows, so I can't see regions for each part.
Ideally, I'd like 8 tracks in the arrange window for working with regions, and 8 channels in the track mixer for processing (although I'm OK just processing within RMX if necessary).
Can someone tell me the proper way to set up RMX in Logic 8? What have I missed (hoping not to open environment and relive the **** of setting up RMX in L7).
    Thanks!!

Thanks for sticking with me Christian. I'm still messing with it. Still no luck. I've created multi in environment (followed video). Created multi in arrange, clicked + in mixer. I get a lot of things that look like RMX. So far:
    - I can't get a master track in arrange or mixer, I can't get midi tracks in arrange, and I can't get RMX channels to distribute. It's screwed.
Would you mind telling me the steps you took? I must be doing something wrong.
BTW, yes I do have 1.6.1.
