Multi-rendition folios and 108ppi resolution

Experimentation with multi-rendition PDF folios is throwing out some interesting things. I am in a sharing mood.
- A standard iPad 2 folio rendition resamples images to 72ppi. An iPad 3 folio rendition resamples image to 144ppi. A multi-rendition folio resamples images to 108ppi. As a result, images in a multi-rendition folio look worse on an iPad 3 than those in an iPad 3-specific folio. Sure, if the original images are not very good, readers won't notice any difference, but for top-quality photography, the jaggies and jpegging noise are noticeably harsher.
- All raster MSOs in a multi-rendition folio will be resampled to 108ppi. If those MSOs contain text, that text will appear fuzzy/jaggy on an iPad 3 even without zooming in. MSOs must therefore be set to Vector format to preserve the text... but remember that any text incorporated into a raster graphic will still be resampled to 108ppi, then fuzzed up onthe fly to 144ppi on the iPad 3 screen. So if someone is supplying you with logotypes, for example, insist on vector illustration files.
Clearly, the 108ppi resolution of multi-rendition PDF folios is a compromise. I'd be a little happier with this resolution compromise if it was possible to adjust JPEG compression settings for the images.

Hi Bob
I've just created a large report and did what you suggested, duplicate the image, and turn it into an mso and then added the HD folder. Nothing looked different, so I tested on of the images in the HD folder by adding the word HD, tested on iPad 3 and it didnt pick it up. I've made sure the file names are exactly the same. The files are tiff's.
Have I missed something? all my SD assets are in a Links folder, with all the other assets, and then I created the folder "HD" with the hi-res images in there, and thats it. The 1024x768 folio is linked to all the normal images, but retina version is not picking up the images from HD folder
Anything obvious missing? oh and I'm on release 23
Cheers

  • Creating multi-rendition (retina and non-retina) from one folio

    Hi there,
We'd like to create a multi-rendition folio from a single, retina-sized set of source files. I've seen this discussed in a few places, but am not sure of the workflow. Is anyone able to point to a guide for doing this?
      Thanks in advance,
    Toby

Anything two years old pertaining to DPS is too old to take with anything
but a grain of salt. Things have changed dramaticallyŠand for the better.
When that article was written, renditions were the only way to support both
    retina and non-retina devices.
Try it yourself. Create a few test articles and turn them into folios with
PNG at 1024x768, 2048x1356, and finally a PDF folio at 1024x768 and make
    your own judgements.
Barring some incredibly high end need, I'm pretty confident that you'll have
a very difficult time justifying the extra work of doing renditions. But
should you have a certain graphic that you feel needs to be 144ppi you can
can create a one state image sequence using the hd/sd assets.
Finally, unless you have a pro or enterprise account, this is moot. Single
Edition apps do not support renditions. Here' a link to one I did recently:
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/my-9-months/id528623198?mt=8
Check it out. It's done as I described above. 1024x768 PDF.

  • Multi-rendition Folios

Do multi-rendition folios work in Creative Cloud versions of DPS?

They were specifically created for the Single Edition use case. They are only valuable if you are using pan and zoom overlays in your publication. If you aren't there's no point to them, just use a 1024x768 folio in PDF format.

  • Multi rendition folio size

    hi there,
i've read an article about Apple forcing us to build (at least) retina versions of our new apps, starting from Mai 2013.
Can someone tell me if this really true ?
If I want to build multi-renditions or retina versions:
    - is it right to work with photoshop (layered PSD) images at 264dpi and scale them down as needed inside InDesign or is it better to do all scaling inside Photoshop and do a 'safe for web' as JPG ?
    - do I have to include video at 1080p or will 720p be enough ?
At this point I did a little test. Adobe Media Encoder created 720p and 1080p versions of each videoclip in a magazine. Inside the InDesign document I've linked to the 720p videofile. Filesize of the folio on the iPad was 478Mb.
Then I've put the 1080p versions inside a 'HD' folder together with the corresponding 720p file. Filesize of the folio grows to 932Mb.
Can someone inform me if this the way we have to build our folio's from Mai 2013 on ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Herman Belgy

Hi there. I have been uploading my articles as a PDF as we discussed, so that every ipad version can have the highest res possible.
Bob, you said I should ignore this link...
    http://helpx.adobe.com/digital-publishing-suite/help/creating-dps-content-different-ipad.h tml
    I'm still confused.
Should I be doing this? (as stated in link) (My articles are horizontal only and 1024x768)
    Create 1024x768 and 2048x1536 renditions
When you create folio renditions, the iPad SD models display only the 1024x768 rendition and the iPad HD displays only the 2048x1536 rendition. You can use either the same set of source files (recommended) or two different sets of source files to create the renditions. For additional guidance, see the articles by Bob Bringhurst and Colin Fleming linked below.

  • Digital Blow in and Multi Orientation Folios

    Hi there,
stoked to be using the reading api and digital blow in features discussed here.
we're using it in this app, and it appears we've discovered a bug, whereby if you produce a multi-orientation folio, then the web-overlay only works on the portrait orientation, not the landscape?
Are you able to confirm if this is a bug or not?  If so need to know of a workaround we can apply for this, and a timeframe for when this can be fixed?
    thanks, love your work.
    Conor.

So I did that, expecting a timely response. it's been a week and Adobe boast of one hour for response time. Very frustrated to essentially be a beta tester for Adobe's new features and software and not getting anywhere. For the record, we publish magazines that are featured on newsstand - not that makes any difference, but it's pretty furstrating to have to follow this up... it needs to be documented.

  • Distinguish mono-folio and multi-folio PDF on Windows Explorer

    Hi everyone,
is there a way to distinguish mono-folio and multi-folio PDF files on Windows' Explorer ? I mean without opening them, simply when you look at the thumbnail ?
    Thanks.

In that case, no. The icon for a PDF file is always the same, and the page count is not one of the properties displayed in the hover menus in Explorer.

  • How do you share and view multi article folios on any desktop computer without DPS?

How can one view a multi article folio on a desktop computer, mac or pc, using the Adobe Content Viewer?
I need this for desktop sharing purposes, for people without DPS of any other Adobe software installed (except for probably Content Viewer).
It`s an interactive brochure that needs to be spread among a number of people. Some use mobile devices, but others use Desktop computers.
    Thank you.

DPS is essentially a mobile publishing platform.
The only desktop ACV that is available is for Windows 8.1. Otherwise these
    folks need tablets.

  • IWeb and full resolution pictures for download

I finally got a good camera and wanted to share those glorious 12MP (3-4MByte) pictures via iWeb. I'd not paid much attention before now, but iWeb is fond of "optimizing" and reducing the size of pictures in order to save space and improve upload and download times. Even if you uncheck "optimize" in preferences, and select "download full resolution" in the photo inspector, I've found that some times you get the full multi-megabyte picture, then for reasons unknown to me, most other pictures have been reduced from 1/4 to 1/10 the original file size and the resolution has been reduced, say form 3000x4000 pixel to 768x1024 (seems arbitrary ...).
How to deal with this. Nothing direct that I can find: uncheck optimize works for a bit, them reverts; full size download refers to the size after such "optimizing." I think it's a bug, but maybe others think it's a feature.
My indirect work around: use your public folder on idisk in me.com. Create a folder structure to mirror your iWeb picture album structure to simplify life for your guest. Password protect it if you want some privacy.
Then go ahead and let iWeb optimize, and select the download size you want (maybe "medium" is fine for some users, for example).
But include on each picture or album page a hyperlink to your me.com public folder: the link will look something like https://public.me.com/<your me.com name here>. If you've specified a password, it will be requested when someone uses the link. I don't think there is any finer grain hyperlink available to your public folder - for example, to the sub folders you create to mirror your album structure.
The public idisk options are in preferences in idisk on iWeb.
If you only want to share a few pictures, it may be easier for the user to share individual file with a similar hyper link set up for each one using link outside the picture container object (can't be inside), or for each picture on the detail page (the comment, such as the image name, can be made a clickable element (hyper link). If you have tens or more pictures to share at once, this method is pretty inconvenient.
The sharing options for individual files are available when you select file via idisk in me.com
So, there it is. Hope this suggestion helps someone.
    Eddie O
PS: Yes, I've offered feedback to Apple about this lack of flexibility in iWeb.

If you only want to share a few of the larger files zip them and put them in a folder titled Pictures in your iDisk/Web/Sites folder. Then create a thumbnail or text hyperlink to them at http://web.me.com/MMeAccount_Name/Pictures/FileName. That way they will immediately download when the link is selected.
A viewable version of the photo can be placed on the page and linked to the larger zipped version on your iDisk.

  • Retail Folios and In-App purchases

    Hi,
How are retail folios (as managed in Folio Producer) and in-app purchases related?
That is, when I add a new in-app purchase for my new retail folio in my Multi-folio App; how does my app know which folio is related to which in-app purchased I added in iTunesConnect?
In iTunesConnect I assign a price tier to my in-app purchase. How does the Multifolio App that is that given folio and no another that has to be that price tier?
    Thanks!

    Hello Bob,
I'm trying to publish a new folio in one or our apps.
It's a newsstand app including free and retail folios.
    My question about iTunesConnect:
Do I have to create a new in-app purchase for each new retail folio?
That's not very clear to me...
    Thanks in advance!

  • DPS and iPhone Resolutions

If I want to take my existing dual orientation 1024 x 768 folio and put it on the iPhone, do I have to create 6 additional layouts? Is there a way to have one resolution match all iPhone devices?

Liquid page rules and alternate layouts feature speeds up this process. Considering what fits and what doesn't fit. Read the following article:

  • How do I reduce the size of a graphic in Preview and maintain resolution?

    Preview 6.0.1
    Hi,
I have a graphic in Preview. The largest file is a .jpg at 77 KB. Information about the graphic is in the attached "Adjust Size ScreenPreview Galleon 77.
I find that when I reduce the size of the file using Previews menu bar functions that I usually use — Screenshot>Zoom reduce>Select the smaller picture>Screenshot — that the result is an image that has lost the focus, the resolution of the original graphic.
How do I reduce the size of a graphic and maintain resolution? I've never used the Adjust Size Screen functions.
I'm not stuck on having to use Preview to accomplish this, but I do use Preview a lot.
    Thanks,

Choose a smaller width, the height will adjust appropriately, and the resolution will stay the same.

  • Bug in Multi-File Search and Replace in RH6?

I'm using the 6.0 trial, and one thing I want to be able to
do is to replace the variables I put in using JavaScript with the
new feature variables in 6.0. So, I went in to multi-file search
    and replace, and searched for:
    <script
    language=JavaScript>document.write(varProduct)</script>
I copied this code directly from a topic, and pasted it into
    the Search tool.
I don't even care whether I can successfully copy the code
from my new variable for use as the replacement text; I'd be happy
if the multi-file search would simply find all occurrences of my
original code so I don't miss any during conversion to 6.0.
It keeps coming up as not found, and this concerns me
greatly. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a known bug? Does
    anyone have a workaround?
    Thanks!

    Hi robowriter
I'm assuming you are using the wondrous little applet known
    as Multi-File Find and Replace.
Unfortunately, this little beastie is like a cat. It
frequently has a fussy tummy and loves to hork up furballs. Well,
not exactly. Really what it does is fail to properly handle
anything with a line break. So you need a tool that does do this.
Fortunately, one exists! It is called FAR (Find And Replace). Oddly
enough, it was also written by a fellow Microsoft Help MVP named
Rob Chandler. (Rob lives in Australia)
You can download a trial version of FAR from the FAR page.

  • Multi-Room DVR and HD DVR?

Is it possible yet to have a multi-room DVR and an HD-DVR?  I want to have my downstairs DVR be the multi-room DVR and be able to watch the shows that I record upstairs on that DVR in addition to the shows recorded downstairs.  It seems I can never get a correct answer from Verizon sales until AFTER I attempt to do this and they send me the equipment!  Twice now they told me it could be done, send me out a new box(no idea why when it is a software upgrade) and then when it does not work I call and tell them and they say it can not be done.  I always tell them that I have 2 DVR's already and give my example.  Today was the second time this happened and they sent me the older 6416 box when I had the 7 series.  I hope this can be done soon or better yet they start putting bigger hard drives into the DVR's!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have been asking the same question for some time (since 12/2009) and get a reply of "sorry for the inconvenience".  What kind of an answer is that?  I have three HD set top boxes ... One is standard (no DVR),  one is HD DVR, and one is a HOME Media DVR (multi room DVR).  I would like to strongly suggest to VZ sales/management for FIOS TV, that VZ consider the development of a feature to allow all set top boxes to view all programs recorded on all DVRs regardless of type of DVR.  Presently, only the standard HD can view the programs on the Home Media DVR.  Standard HD STB cannot see the recorded programs on the HD DVR.  The DVRs cannot see each others recorded programs.

  • Internet Security UI scaling on Windows 8.1 and high resolution displays

Please make the Internet Security UI scale properly on Windows 8 and high resolution screens. I have a 13" laptop with 3200x1800px screen resolution and Internet Security UI is pretty much unusable without a magnifying glass. Here's a screenshot (scaled down to 1920p). • Image Size reduction and gain resolution... Help?

I have searched the forums and seen plenty of talk of Image Size and resolutions but havent stumbled upon what I need.
Hopefully someone will be nice enough to help me or to link me to help?
I have a large photo (3456x2304) but it is at 72ppi.
I am trying to use it as a very small image (200px or so) but I need it at 300ppi.
I keep going into Image Size and reducing its dimensions to the size I need and marking 300dpi.
Problem is when it resizes it gets horribly pixelated!!!
I cant figure out how to use the image size and/or crop tool in order to reduce the dimensions and not lose quality.
Best work around I have found is to reduce it to about 750px 72ppi and then in illustrator contract the image to the actual print size while gaining resolution...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a relationship between image size and ppi (resolution)  that can not be changed.  Here is an example from the web titled "understanding resolution".
Let's say you have an image that is 9 inches wide and 6 inches high with a resolution of 240 pixels/ per inch (8.9mb file).  If you change one of the values the other two will change (resample image turned off).  In this example if you changed the width to 6 inches the height would become 4 inches and the resolution would become 360 ppi.
So if you are taking a large image and reducing the size the ppi has to go up.  There are the same number of pixels in the picture, they are compressed into a smaller space.  The article says this is because a digital image has no absolute size or resolution.  All it has is a certain number of pixels in each dimension.
    Hope this helps.
