Multi-track recording question

Multi-track recording question
Hey, just need some help on multi tracking using audition, hope this is the right forum?
Wanted to know if anyone has a clue about assigning inputs from an audio interface to separate tracks on a recording program (ie: Adobe audition)
I record live with my band alot, and have every amp and the kit mic'd up, but how do i make it so that each microphone is recording to a different track on the PC?
My interface is an M audio fast track ultra, if that is of any use.
Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

In Audition, assuming that you can see all of the inputs available in the Hardware Setup, you find the right-facing arrow (input assign) on each track in MV's Main view, and you click on the box it's pointing to, go to Mono, and select the input you want for that particular track. The mono ones say [01M], [02M], etc. If you want to record a stereo track, then select the Stereo option where the inputs are paired and say [01S] et seq. This would have input 1 as left, input 2 as right.
If you can't see all of the inputs available, try selecting the ASIO driver in Hardware Setup...

  • Multi Track Recording for a dummies (please help!)

    Background:
I've tried to search these forums and others for an answer to this question, but there is almost too much info out there and a lot of it is pretty confusing (for example: http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Tutorials/AggregateDevice.html )
    The Goal:
My nephew would like to record multiple tracks of audio into Garage Band at the same time. For example, 4 people each singing at the same time. (by the way, he has a brand new MacBook).
Neither he nor I know much about music equipment these days, although I have some experience from the early 90s.
From what I can tell, there are 2 options:
    1) Use a multi-track recorder.
Like this: http://www.zzounds.com/item--FOSMR8MKII ). First you record onto the included compact flash card, then you then you import each track into Garage Band (one track at a time?).
    2) Record all 4 tracks directly into Garage Band.
Option 2 seems like the best for his needs, but we can't quite figure out what device is needed. Somewhere we read that we need a "4 track audio interface" but somewhere else someone said that an audio interface would mix all 4 tracks together into 1. I also have no idea who the best manufacturers are these days, etc. I don't even know enough to do a decent google search.
We're not looking for something top-of-the-line. Just something solid and reliable with decent sound quality. Hoping to keep it under $250. He knows he is going to have to dive in and really learn Garage Band, but we are hoping that there is something out there that is as close to plug-and-play as possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i can't help but ask: what did you not understand in that? it shows you step by step what to click, there really isn't anything to understand, just follow the steps.
Well, the title of my post does say "for dummies" (actually its says "for a dummies" - nice proof reading on my part).
But to answer your question (if you really want to know), its daunting for someone with zero point zero Garage Band experience. Put yourself in the position of someone with no Garage Band knowledge whatsoever. Then read that post. It assumes that the reader at least knows why they are on that page, as opposed to having stumbled onto it through some random google link. It doesn't actually say up front anywhere that this is for recording multiple tracks into Garage Band. In fact, none of the steps are done inside Garage Band - its in a utility called "Audio Midi Setup."
I am not saying that its poorly written, or unclear, I just didn't "get it" at first. Keep in mind that I am working in the dark here and trying to get up the learning curve as quickly as I can. This is all new stuff to me - and I am just trying to help out my nephew.
Now subsequent to my original post, I found a FAQ on that site and then found this: http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Tutorials/RecordingMultipleTracks.html So now I understand that you can either use an "interface", or create this so called "aggregate device". Little by little its all falling into place. ( Also its seems like that is a really good site for Garage Band info. )
but somewhere else someone said that an audio interface would mix all 4 tracks together into 1.
that's a silly thing to say, it depends on the interface, the one linked to above will record to separate tracks.
Again, I am stumbling around in the dark. Cut me some slack. How was I supposed to know that something someone else wrote was silly?
But MOST importantly, you did give me a link to a device that will do what he wants, the Alesis MultiMix 8 USB. Thank You!!! Now if we could find one that's a little cheaper I'd really be in business.

  • Multi-track recording with GB1 and GB2

I recently purchased a new RME Fireface 800 and want to begin recording multi-track audio.
I plan to purchase DP in the future but have spent my $ allocation for now and want to be able to at least get started using something simple and cheap like GB. I currently have GB1 and have learned from experience that it does not support multi-track recording. If GB2 does I will UG.
Has anyone successfully recorded 8 tracks simultaneously with GB2 and if so how?

I finally got around to fixing a typo in the anchor for the above link, but instead of adding it, i replaced the typo which breaks the above link. The correct (and hopefully final) URL is:

  • SB X-Fi and Multi-Track Recording

I have a SB X-Fi card pre-installed on my new Windows7 computer & I'm using Cakewalk HomeStudio7 for multi-track recording. The SB card is working OK. I can record from the Line-In correctly.
However, when I record in a new audio track, the other audio tracks are also mixed in, rather than just being audible in the mix.
I didn't have this problem with a generic sound card. I'm fairly certain there is a SB setting somewhere that will disable audio from being recorded and just use the Line-In instead. No idea where to look however. I don't believe this is related to Cakewalk.
How do you keep the SB Audio output from being included in a recording? It's not connected to the Line-In & Line-In is the default with everything else disabled.
    Thanks,
    Mark

As I understand, the digital IO module only works with some but not all x-fi cards.
Your reciever/amplifier has to decode the DTS or other 5. encoded stream. Check to see what format your reciever can understand, and make sure that you have checked those in the Control Panel / Sound / Advanced applet. If your amp supports a particular format only (and bit depth and sample rate) you might need to make sure the card is set for that and you might possibly even need a source in that format.
The 5. channels are in one data stream, the reciever decodes it; I think they mostly autodetect the protocols they can decode. However, if you decode it in the card, you can send out the 5. analog channels to the analog inputs on your amplifier.

  • Including effects in multi track recording

    Hi
was wondering if anyone could help me. I would like to know how (if possible) I could set a series of effects that are applied directly on a track by track basis during a multi track recording. I use a 16 channel USB interface and often record my band using +/- 10 tracks simultaneously. I now record the tracks via mics or DI outputs from amplifiers and then apply compression etc on a track by track basis after the initial data capture. I would like to be able to (for example), set a preset effect such as compressor and capture the audio with that effect applied in real time, just as I would if the signal went through a hardware compressor.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Tony

so what is the purpose of the MIXER tab in multi track view where one can apply effects on a track by track basis? I am imagining that AA3 would behave similar to a hardware console where the inputs can be managed effects wise by the effects available on the board.
Are the effects in the MIXER tab for playback only? I am confused. For example, if I set certain effects to channel X in the mixer tab, what does that do for me?
The effects are present for monitoring purposes, but because they've been passed through the entire system, they inevitably gain a degree of latency that makes them rather ineffective for direct monitoring purposes by a performer. In theory, you can apply reverb into a vocal performance and send it back to the vocalist, but if you do, you have to make sure that the direct signal doesn't go as well because the delay will be totally offputting. Invariably, if you want effects to listen to whilst recording, then external hardware does a better job, I'm afraid - and that's invariably a computer limitation.
So, if you add an effect in the mixer during recording, it will only be for monitoring purposes - the track will be recorded dry, as Bob says. And yes, that's always been industry practice - you always have a clean recording to return to if you screw up the effects, and that's invariably cheaper than a new session to re-record. You have to be careful though - when you replay your track it will still sound as though the effects are applied unless you remember to remove them from the mixer channel first. So the effect acts on the channel all the time, but never on the recording.
Yes, there is a way of cheating if you have a multi-I/O card. You feed the monitor output to a spare output pair, and re-record it on a spare input pair. This way you get a dry recording, and an effected one. It's rarely worth it, though.

  • Multi-Track Recording Capabilities of L8

Does L8 have all the features of Logic Pro? I'm mostly interested in the multi-track recording capabilities of L8. It talks about multitracking but only in regard to multiple "takes". Does it allow multiple MIDI controllers to be recorded simultaneously to separate tracks?

  • Simultaneous Multi Track Recording

Ok, Hi there fellow GB Users. I have a question here reguarding recording live audio.
I want to record our band live, with seperate tracks for each musician. I know that you can use an aggregate device to setup usb headsets and mics and such, but what I want to know is if anyone knows of a INEXPENSIVE Multi Input hardware. Either Firewire or USB preffered, or maybe even Opticallink.
So, I have used GB to record the musicians one at a time, overlaying a new track along side the others with great sucsess.
There are things like http://www.presonus.com/ but I am looking to do this on the Cheap. starving musician here
I don't mind building something if you know of a kit, or something else I can do.
I also wondered if anyone doing this already could tell me what they are using, and aslo how many tracks they are ale to record at once with thier respective setups.
    I have a MBP with a 2.53 with 8gb of 1066mhz memory.
I considered using a usb hub with a handfull of usb sound card dongles and using the mic inputs.
I know that I am asking several questions here, I am hoping to start a discussion here on this and related topics.

  • Can't multi-track record MIDI... all channels sent to one track

Hi... I am trying to play back and dump all eight MIDI tracks of a Roland MC-505 pattern simultaneously to discrete separate tracks on the computer. In ProTools I was able to do this, but in Logic it's merging all the channels' data to the single track currently selected in the track list. Then when I press "stop" I see regions of identical size appear in all the other tracks, but they are only aliases without any data in them.
I have each track in Logic set to its single respective MIDI channel in the Inspector, but it doesn't seem to make a difference one way or the other, with regards to what's going on here.
    Much thanks,
    scotty

I don't know if this will help you but there is a song setting that you can try.
Go to Settings > Recording Tab > and enable (check) "Auto Demix by Channel if Multitrack Recording".
    That may help you.

  • Simultaneous multi track recording in Logic Pro7 using MOTU 828 mk2

I would like to use the eight separate audio inputs on my MOTU 828 and connect them directly in line to eight channel strips/tracks in Logic Pro 7 v 7.2.1.  (presumably through the firewire interface).  I can't find any documentation in either the Logic or MOTU manuals to tell me how to do it.  I'm sure someone out there knows - please tell me!

this happens to me from time to time. I have level and sound on the track, I hit record and nothing gets recorded. I have discovered this happen when I have another track selected other than the track I am recording on. This may be a bug in 7.1.1. Make sure you have the track you are recording to, highlighted (selected).

  • How do I do Multi track recording simultaneously with 2 maudio 61keyboards

  • Multi track recording

How do you record two tracks simultanously in GB-2? I have a m-audio firewire solo. I'm running one mic input with a mic and the other input into a peavey P.A. When I select the tracks for each, only one stays opperable while the other one is being adjusted. The setup is this, one mic records the band, drums, guitar, and bass, while the other is for the vocals through the P.A. Any help out there? Thank you.

You can only select a single track at a time. To record on more than one you need to turn on the RecordEnable button (the little red "LED" in the Track Header) for each track you wish enabled (up to 8 for interfaces with that many channels).

  • Multi-track recording (voice/guitar) in GB2,...which interface?

    hey there,
    I just need some advice here. I have an I-mac G4 700Mhz 768mb, 10.3.9
I am using GB2 now. I already had bought an i-mic 2 years ago, but now i want to record 2 or 3 instruments (guitar/percussion/vocal) at the same time but in different tracks. The I-mic isn't suitable for that since there is only one input.
So I am looking for an audio interface, with at least 2 inputs.
Looking at my Imac, what is wise? firewire or usb interface?
Oh yes most important thing is i dont want to spend more then 200 euros...
    does anyone have recommendations, ideas?
    hear soon
    oskar

Yes yes yes!! finally I have made up my mind!
I have bought the Inspire 1394 from Presonus.
And I love it its a great audio interface, firewire, 4 inputs, phantom power
good software (even cubase LE,..sorry guys I have to let GB go!)
    And recording quality is superb!!
    This all for 200 euros!
    Brilliant
    thanks for all the advice
and if you r looking for an audiointerface (and u r on a thight budget) I would recommend the Inpire!!

  • Multi-track recording w/ M-Audio 1814. Help!

    Hi
Can anybody out there explain to me how to set up my 1814 to record more than one track at a time in Logic 7? I need 5 tracks to go with the 5 tracks that are already layed down. I have read in previous posts that the inputs need to correspond to the track numbers in Logics Track mixer. Is this correct? If so How would I record 5 tracks at a time when 1-5 of the mixer is already occupied? The 1814 has 8 analog inputs (I think so, at least)
Please if anyone can clear this up, Id really appreciate it.
    Thanks

In Logic Express you can record at least 12 tracks at the same time; the only problem is that Logic itself chooses which digital input you can use!
But for analog inputs there are no problem.
Choose a track and in the channel strip on the left choose the input for that track.
On the next track select the next input and so on.
Now hold the shift key and click on each track on the R button to activate recording mode.
    You are ready!
    cheers

  • Multi track recording with Garage Band

I need to record 4 tracks similtaniously. Have been doing 2 tracks with M audio solo without problem. What interface can do what I need? 410-Presongs-other?

Do a search at musiciansfriend.com and that will give you all the answers you are looking for.
And I think that there are numerous threads on this forum about this topic, so a little research might get you there too.
    Good luck.

  • Multi-track Recording with Audigy (input level adjustment of 6 tracks)

    Hi,
Has anyone used an Audigy (or similar) to record more than 2 channels?
I have an Audigy 4, which I use for 24 bit recordings. Usually I just use 2 channels, and an ASIO4ALL v2 interface which probably uses the "WDM:SB Audigy 4 Audio [D880]" driver.
However, there's another driver I can select which is "SB Audigy 4 ASIO 24/96 [D880]", and this gives me 6 input channels corresponding to the R and L channels of the inputs line , 2 and 3. This is great, and seems to work OK, but whereas I can control the levels of the incoming signals (on line 3 L/R) with the 2 channel driver, the Creative surround mixer doesn't have any control over the input levels in the 6 channel case, so I'm stuck with having to adjust the level of the incoming signal externally.
Has anyone found a solution to this difficulty? I've updated to the latest drivers.
I'm using Windows XP pro. and the recording software is n-Track 5.1.
    Thanks,
    Peter

HI, I dont know if anyone has had this happen to them or not. I Have a MODEL # SB0090 Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy with 394 PCI Sound Card with the front controls. I have used it for years. I just re-loaded it into a new computer and loaded the new driver. When I had the old driver loaded I got a very harsh repeated ......BLAP.....BLAP.......BLAP.......BLAP it was very nasty and sounded like a cd skipping. I loaded the new driver and that got rid of the BLAP skipping thing. Now with the new driver when I bring up the windows play and record controls and when I have the Mutes all off and say for example AUX 2 selected, as soon as I arm the track in Sonar the AUX 2 on the windows play control auto mutes right before my eyes I can then de-select mute and the track stays armed, BUT as soon as I hit record it will auto mute again yet the meters still move and it still records and I am able to de-select mute again while recording and it does not effect the recording. It is a very big hassle during a recording project. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE AWESOME!!!!
Are you using ASIO (or asio4all), WDM/KS or MME32 on Sonar?
Not sure but have you checked how the "Record Without Monitoring" (or similiarly named ) option is set (Start menu, Run..., sndvol32 /r).
On Sonar you may need to enable Input ECHO ( [color="#339966"][)))]? button on track headers).
