Multi User Screen Sharing

I recently bought a mac mini to replace Win 8 file server and have a question about screen sharing.  I have created 2 users one is the main account which i guess is an admin and 1 user as a standard user.  If i log into mini as the Main User then screen sharing from remote computer just logs into this account(mirror of the mini) however if i log into mini as stardard user or secondary user then i get an option share display or Log in as the main user.  Is there a way i can force this option or behavior if i log into mini as the main user.  ie i would like to have mini boot into admin automatically and then be able to log in as a user from a remote computer not affecting the monitor of the main computer.  Is this possible?
Thanks,
Matt

Thanks for the link but I had already read that.  Problem is that when logged into macmini(computer I want to log into from remote machine) as user a when I try to log in from imac it automatically logs in as user a in screen sharing mode!  No option to choose log in as user B or a dialog to choose that option.... It simply starts in screen sharing mode.  I have preferences set to allow all users on macmini.  If I log in as user b on Mac mini then I have the option to choose to log in as user a which is opposite what I am trying to do.  How can I change this behavior?
Thanks again.

  • Per-user screen sharing?

I'm interested in setting up a server system to which different users on different computers can connect and have individual workspaces.  I understand this "per-user screen sharing" feature is not active in Lion, is that correct?  Also I have not discovered information about the capability in Lion Server, can anyone shed any light on this please?
    Thanks very much.

The Apple provided feature set will likely disappoint you.  Look at AquaConnect if you are trying to recreate Terminal Service.

  • I have windows, one computer but multi users. home sharing is on. how can i share music between users on one computer?

I have windows.  One computer but multi users.  Home sharing is on. 2 apple accounts-1 per user. 4 devices-2 iphones and 2 ipods per user.  How can we share music  on one computer between 2 users?

Hi Justinece, I've solved the problem in this way:
In my wife user profile I've set in itunes settings/advanced the path to my music library: /Users/"MY NAME"/Music/iTunes/Itunes media.
Than, from my wife profile using my administrator user and password I've set the "read/write" privileges on the above mentioned folder.
Finally I've added the folder in my wife's library taking care to not duplicate it ( leave blank the flag in itunes setting/advanced).
I really don't understand what's the use of home sharing...

  • Multi-way screen sharing?

I've used iChat's screen sharing on many occasions to work with one other person.
I just had occasion to give an application demo to two colleagues. Given that iChat Theater lets me share a KeyNote or iPhoto presentation with more than one person, I thought iChat's Share a File feature might let me start an application demo. But it won't let me pick a FileMaker database file.
Is there a way to share my screen with more than one person?

Not that I am aware of. (not even using Apple Remote Desktop)

  • Multi user itunes sharing

I currwently have 2 users on my ibook, myself and partner. I cannot find any information in the help files relating to sharing itunes between users. We each have an ipod and sometimes would like to use each others songs etc(as you would with cd).I undersatnd digital rights management etc, but we are on the same computer in the same house surely we are not expected to buy the same song twice, please help!

    Pynestar hello,
    Method A
To start with both user#1 and user #2 will have identical Library files and if you want to keep it so...
User #1 adds more Music to shared file and also has it recorded in home iTunes Library file ...
User #1 puts copy of their iTunes Library file in shared folder (iTunes Library User #1)
User #2 copies (iTunes Library User #1) to their iTunes folder and replaces iTunes Library file that is there.... and removes tag from end of name iTunes Library user #1
It works in reverse of course if user #2 adds more new music... anytime a new copy is put in Shared folder the other user can if they wish also update...
    Method B (my favorite)
To start with both user#1 and user #2 will have identical Library files...
User #1 adds more music to shared folder but user #2 likes the idea of own ratings, number of times song played, last played and date added...
User #2 selects from file menu 'add to library' and chooses the iTunes Music folder on the shared folder... (note: pref. settings should be same as before NOT copy files and DO keep organized)
iTunes will quickly check all existing entries and add any new ones to library list, then user can set own ratings... number of times song played, last played will be zero and date added will be now. (this info is very useful for compiling smart playlists)
Some users have reported that using an alias works well but I have seen many problems associated with the use of...
I also use the Finder to backup and keep a check of what is what ... where is it all stored ... has it been backed up ... other vital facts and store the info which results from the search as a smart folder and store it in my Music folder and as it updates automatically I can see at a glance all I ever need to know... If you need to know more let me know.
    take care Pynestar ... TP

  • Is there a way to switch to single-user mode for screen sharing in Lion?

    Hello,
with the new multiple user mode one screen sharing guest can not see the mouse cursor of another - even if they use the same login.
It's a pity, because we use screensharing to discuss the content of the screens with multiple screen sharing users.
It is necessary to point with the cursor to show the other members of this 'screen sharing meeting' things while discussing.
This is not possible anymore with Lion and multi user screen sharing.
Does anybody know a patch or terminal command to switch back to single user mode for screen sharing?
    Kind regards

  • Non admin screen sharing

I have a lab of computers and would like the teacher station to be able to click "share screen" and see what the student is seeing. The teacher doesn't have Admin rights, and is an OD user. is there a way to give an open directory user Screen sharing rights?

Apple Remote Desktop seems like it would be the turnkey solution to your issue, but comes at a price. There may be other options, but Screen Sharing is not something that is controlled or administered through OD.

  • Screen Sharing - The Infinite Loop

Not sure if this is a question, maybe more of a "gosh, blimey", but then again maybe it is a known issue that I wasn't aware of.
I had screen sharing running on my MBP, looking at my MP in another room. Then I wandered off and forgot it was still running screen sharing, went intro the room the MP was in and started up Screen Sharing with the MBP and it went into this infinite loop thingy, with ever diminishing pictures of one screen within the other, and just went on doing it -both macs were tied up and completely unusable. I thought I'd have to force reboot them both, but managed to get out of it by pressing the power button on the MP to send it to sleep, then quitting screen sharing on the MBP. I tried to get a screenshot but it wasn't working, got some pictures from my phone's camera though. Very weird. Maybe it's inevitable?

    No one with an idea??
I posted this announcement of Apple in another community, and the answer was: Thats a joke, and it doesnt work! Is this true?
    According to Apple:
    Per-user screen sharing
You can remotely log in to a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login.

  • Multi-User Issues

I've taken over development of a Vs2003(vB)/MsSql2000 application which usually runs in on a Windows 2000 server with multiple workstations running the application simultaneously in Remote Desktop Sessions.
The central user interface element of the application is an un-databound grid (actually a farpoint spreadsheet) which displays sql table rows that are accessable from every workstation. The grid refreshes its content whenever a specific subroutine is called.  That subroutine performs a query which loads its results into a collection which is then loaded into the grid. The subroutine is called during startup and at other times using the rather elaborate mechanism described below.  Each workstation also has the ability to modify any row in the grid via a dialog-based editor.  The grid itself is not setup to allow inplace editing.
The grid usually contains about 200 records and 20-50% of these records get modified (some repeatedly) every hour.
My question involves the classic multi-user issues of keeping all of the seperate workstation's grids current as individual workstations make modifications to the data.
What is Microsoft's recommended method for handling multi-user data-refresh requirements in custom applications written in VB.NET2003 with MsSQL2000?
Now that you know what I'm looking for, let me add a little more detail.  The existing code handles this multi-user refresh issue in the following way...
A SQL Trigger is attached to the SQL Table's Insert/Modify and Delete events. That Trigger calls the xp_logevent built-in stored procedure to make an entry in the NT Event Log.
The application contains a subroutine to handle EventLog("Application").EntryWritten messages.  That subroutine calls the subroutine (mentioned earlier) which refreshes the grid contents through a new SQL query.
In this way, whenever any workstation changes the table data, a trigger fires which makes a log entry and broadcasts an EntryWritten message into the global windows environment.  The individual applications (each running in their own RDP session) hear the message and respond by refreshing their grid.
This all seems a little "rube goldberg" to me, but it has worked for many years.
That is, until we moved the SQL2000 server to a seperate machine to improve program responsiveness.
Now when the trigger is fired and the log entry is made, the EntryWritten message is broadcast into the windows environment of the dedicated SQL server where there are no applications listening for it.  Meanwhile, the applications continue to run with unrefreshed data on the (now) dedicated RDP server from where the EntryWritten messages cannot be "heard".
So my question really comes down to this...
In an environment where the SQL server and the RDP server are two seperate machines, what is the best method for coordinating multi-user screen refreshes across seperate applications running in distinct RDP Client sessions?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • Screen Sharing, one user?

I have upgraded a couple of my machines to Lion, and have noticed the switch to allow multi-user/virtual screen sharing.
Is there any way to mimic the old behaviour?
What I use screen sharing for is when my wife or kids need help, or to check in on what the kids are doing.  I would like to be able to log on and control the desktop, without knowing which user is connected.
    Thanks

Correct. So if you are using a Lion(you) to connect to a Snow leopard(kids) then you'll run into this problem
but if its you who runs Snow leopard and kids are running on lion then this whole thread was pointless LOL.

Good question. Are there a lot of accounts?I am unsure what the best setup for you might be. I reckon a 3rd party VNC might just do the trick

  • Screen sharing and multiple users

I have an iMac at home that is used by multiple family members. I have multiple logins enable so it is common to have 2-3 accounts logged in at once. I would like to use screen sharing to connect to my account even when one of the kids is logged into their account.
I started by looking at the vnc processes. There is one process that run as root:
    root 21792 0.0 0.0 2437128 1736 ?? Ss 12:25PM 0:00.02 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/RFBRegisterMDNS
Then there is another process for each person logged in:
    username 22006 0.0 0.3 2734876 13964 ?? S 12:33PM 0:00.29 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Ma cOS/AppleVNCServer
So I have two questions. One is how can there be three processes running that listen on the same 5900 port at the same time and how does it decide which one to connect a vnc client to? My second question is how can I prevent the AppleVNCServer process from starting for each user. I've tried killing those processes but they respawn immediately.

    Hi
Thank you for your answer. Sorry to have been unclear - I'll give it another go :o)
Here is what I am trying to do:
I have 2 users (Plex and Ursus) that I want to have logged on at the same time. Plex will be "in the front" i.e. that is the screen that is seen if you are at the mini. Ursus is a user that is logged on but you cannot currently see (i.e. in the back as it where). I would like to work using the user Ursus (to, for example, rip a movie from a DVD (that I own of course :o).
Using file sharing would mean that I have 2 machines running and that I need to copy all the files from the one machine to the other, not exactly what I want but manageable.
I have managed to get this "partly" working - I am using Vine Server for Mac (http://www.testplant.com/products/vineserver/OSX) which allows me to start a VNC server on e.g. port 5901 and then screen share to that session. If I setup the second user (Ursus in this case) to use this server then I can connect to the "back" user. The only problem being that Vine Server seems to crash with Plex - as soon as I start it Plex just hangs and randomly crashes!
    Was that clearer?
    Thanks again
    Ursus

  • Is it possible for multiple users to use a "generic" account simultaneously without screen sharing?

Hey and thanks for checking out the thread.
I am wondering if it is possible to have users use a generic account at the same time without any sort of screen sharing.
I have set up a generic user account (for example useraccount, password 1234) for users to use in the time before I can set up a custom user name for them. However, I have run into some issues with this.
When multiple users log on using this generic account, their applications seem to be shared on each screen. In the room with multiple Mac workstations, if someone starts working on Photoshop, Photoshop will open on every one elses screen who is logged on under that generic account.
Is it possible for users to log on using a generic network account and have their own isolated work environment or is this sort of sharing a feature? I am new to Mac servers and am not sure.
    Thanks for reading the thread.

That shared-account approach seems impractical for the various reasons you've identified, as well as the inevitable issue of cleaning up the detritus that'll inevitably build up in a shared account, and for the lack of accountability for activities occuring under the shared account for both auditing and security, and sharing directories would tend to introduce obscure conflicts around which-file-version-wins file updates when the same file is used in several places, and would probably be contrary to any per-user application software licensing agreements that might be involved.
Put another way, get unique accounts created for folks, and work toward the ability to create accounts for arriving folks, and — if it's applicable here — talk to management about getting any per-user software licensing issues sorted out, whether that's having spare copies purchased and ahead or some advanced notice on accounts, or establishing group software licensing where that's available.
AFAIK, there are tools around which can automate account creation, too.  Either generic, a tool such as Passenger, or it's certainly feasible to script the account creation sequence.
Trying this shared-access generic-account approach just looks like it can create more work and more hassles and more effort to me...

  • Automatically accept screen sharing from specific user ???

My mother is a newbie mac user. To be honest, she's a newbie computer user - full stop. She did inherit my PC laptop when I switched, but within a week she had crashed it. The mac she has is still running. (And guess who got it for her. I'm a good daughter.)
Anyway - her G4 Powermac is running Leopard like a dream. In fact it is much faster now than before. Still, she has a few issues. Like the other day, she couldn't get music through her speakers and I'm abroad at the time.
I asked her to accept a screen share, she did. I fixed the speaker issue and closed the screen share. She is happy as larry. But that got me thinking. Is it possible to automatically accept screen share from certain users? That would be a great help if that would be possible.
    Thanks in advance.

Musicsites, here is your answer. Just follow the instructions completely and it will work quite well. I have it running and it allows my iMac to automatically answer incoming Screen Sharing requests ONLY from my MacBook.

  • Screen Sharing Disabled Per User?

Hi, this is a repost from OSX usability forums...hopefully someone can help here:
I caught a kid cheating this morning by utilizing Screen Sharing to see what his neighbor was answering on a test. I would like to disable Screen Sharing as it pertains to the user, but I still need to run Remote Desktop and see all machines at the admin level. Each kid has an OpenDirectory account, so would it be possible to block at that level?

Block the Screen Sharing application. If the accounts are OD accounts, just add this to the MCX set and start enforcing an explicit deny on the Screen Sharing app. That should resolve it. The other option, assuming all systems have a unified admin account that the kids don't know, go into System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Management and choose "only these users" and add the local admin account only. That should set up a SACL for the ARD/Screen Sharing process to only allow access for the one user, not for all potential users of the machine.
    Hope this helps

  • Shared calendar items in multi-user calendar view

    Hi!
    I have another question:
The new multi-user Calendar-view is great - but we have one thing, which
    is confusing to our users:
User A has a shared calendar (the owner of this shared calendar is User
B). It is clear, that User A can see appointments of this shared
calendar in his "main Calendar" if this shared calendar is "enabled".
But User A cannot see the calendar items of this foreign shared
calendar, if he changes to the new multi-user - view.
Does this work as designed or is it a bug?
    Thanks a lot

Does User A also have read proxy rights to User B's calendar?
Also, which version/patchlevel of the client are you using?
