Multi user use of external hard drive (Time Capsule) mount and permisssions

I have an iMac (intel, OSX10.6.7) and Time Capsule [TC]. I have set up Time Machine to use the TC. I also use the TC for additional storage - Photos and Music - to keep the iMac drive fairly free. There are 5 users of this setup (2 Admin). The TC is also accessed from windows machines and so I can not use a sparse bundle for it.
When one person is logged in and the TC drive is "Mounted" for that user, all hunky dory. On the one hand the Time Machine is able to mount, connect backup, and disconnect it's sparse bundle with no issues. If another user (admin or not) tries to access the TC drive (not Time Machine) they can not get at the contents, it is marked with a No Entry sign on the Folder Icon.
How oh How oh How can I get the Time Capsule (External Drive) mounted so that all the users can access it without a previous user having to disconnect? Also how can I get it to keep the permissions I set (to inherit) rather than permanently reverting to read-only after someone had updated the file?

Wireless Router with USB + External Hard Drive = Time Capsule?

So I bought a TP-Link WR710N wireless router http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-WR710N which seems to support external storage in its USB port. I tried with various storage media and it kinda works. The bad thing is that it only sees NTFS drives. I tried an external hard drive formated for Windows and a USB stick, also formated for Windows and it discovered them. But when I tried my external hard drive which is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which I was using for Time Machine, it couldn't see it. Neither the TP-Link software, nor the Time Machine software.
Is there any way I could use this router with this hard drive for wireless backing up with Time Machine NOT buying extra equipment (NAS, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule) ?

Take it back and get a Time Capsule or keep it and buy a regular external drive and connect it to the Mac directly.

I have an external hard drive that I've used with my Windows PC/ itunes / music that I've copied to the PC. Can I use the external hard drive that I use with my Windows PC on my Mac/ itunes / music I've downloaded to my Mac?

Can somebody tell me what steps I have to take to use my TC as an external hard drive? Thanks! / Kann mir jemand einmal genau erklären, wie ich meine Time Capsule als externe Festplatte für meine Fotos etc. nutzen kann? External hard drive + time capsule

I recently purchased an iMac and connected a LaCie ext. hard drive. Time Machine kicked in and started using this as a backup location. Since then I purchased Time Capsule for backups. The Lacie hard drive is still sitting on my desktop labelled Time Machine Backups. Can I just delete the old backup files and use it as an extra hard drive for digital photos etc.? I'm just a little confused as a long time pc user. I had expected that the extra hard drive would show up as "external hard drive" or "Lacie hard drive"

you can remove that external hard drive, if you have it currently connected to TC then use Airport Utility to go to disk/shared and disconnect it then remove the power then remove usb cable. If you want then connect to your Mac and partition it then add your software . You can connect it to the TC power on first then usb to TC then to device. Open your boot hard drive and on left side will be Tc. Select it and you'll see your external hard drive.

I have a NTFS external hard drive and I have heard about reformatting it so that it can read/write across both systems, but can I still use this hard drive to back up the data on my macbook? How can I use my external hard drive on my mac and a windows computer?

Can anyone help...I have recently purchased a new external hard drive for my macbook pro, it is a 1TB hard drive. I use it for time machine back ups which only takes up about 250gb of space so obviously I have a lot more to use. I'm at University and the computers there are Windows so I'm hoping to be able to drag my uni work to my external HD and connect it to the windows computers at my university so that I have my work there as well - however I'm not sure how I should format my HD???

You will eventually use all of that 1TB external for the Time Machine backups, that is if you do regular Time Machine backups (It is NOT a One Time thing). So using that same external for anything else is not a good idea.
You would be much better off buying a large USB thumb drive, like 64GBs in size, and format that to one of the Windows formates that both Mac OS X and Windows can read from and write to. Those would be FAT32 and exFAT. If you are moving file less than 4GBs in size then format it FAT32. You can then copy files to it from your Mac and Read those files on the Windows PCs the school has and just stick that Thumb drive in your pocket.

Using an external hard drive for an apple and a pc

I recently bought a Seagate 250g external hard drive to store files from both an apple and a pc. What is the best way to format the drive (or partitions) so that i can reliably back up files from both the mac and the pc? I am using OS 10.4.2 on the mac, and windows xp professional on the pc.

I presume you want to access all the 250 GB from both systems. There are two solutions for it.
The problem in the background is, that both systems have their own special file system, which can't be written by the other system.
solution a)
If you are a rather unexperienced user you should format it FAT32. Don't use Windows to do so, because it will limit your partition size to 32 GB. Rather use the Mac OS X Disk Utility instead. Apple calls the FAT32-format the "MS-DOS" format.
Downside is here that you waste a lot of space on the drive because FAT32 is rather outdated and not meant for a partition that big.
But it is easy to setup!
solution b)
Windows can't even read Apple's HFS+ neither write to it natively. You would need commercial software to enable that. Therefore I would use Microsoft's NTFS. Mac OS X can read this at least. If you want to write to it you have to install the open source freeware MacFUSE and the NTFS-3G "extension" for it as suggested by The Mark above (see his link).
Use Windows to format the drive as NTFS.
The downside is you have to install MacFUSE and NTFS-3G - which is not too complicated. But you can make better use of the space on your drive.
I would say: try to install MacFUSE and NTFS-3G on your Mac. If this seems to work, format the drive with Windows as NTFS. If something doesn't work choose FAT32 as fallback solution.

Using an External Hard Drive for iMovie Editing and Burning to DVD

Between iPhoto, iTunes and other applications I am rapidly running out of hard drive space on my 2003 iMac. Because of this, I recently purchased a Lacie 250 GB Firewire external hard drive and was hoping to use it for iMovie editing and buring of DVDs, because of the large amount of disk drive space video eats up. Is it it possible to "load" iMovie and iDVD to the external drive and edit/burn videos on that drive? If not, is there some other way to use that external drive in this process? Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided.

That's how I do all my stuff now - via external lacie 'brick' drive. The only trick is when you begin your iMovie project, hit save immediately after creating the new project, and save the project file in an appropriately named folder on the external hard drive (don't call it 'Movies' as it'll be confused with your Powerbook's movies folder). Then as you import all your clips from your movie camera, they will be written to the external drive, rather than you G4's drive. Very handy.
I do all my iMovie and iDVD stuff via the external Lacie drive - the FireWire 400 interface is quick enough (ie never had skipped clips, etc). I also save all iDVD finished projects as disc images on the external drive and burn DVDs from those at slow speed via Disc Utility. No coasters...:-)

My external hard drive won't mount and shows a 'sibling link error'. I've seached the forums but need a very dumbed down set of tips for the computer illiterate- help?

The forums have suggestions on this topic but I don't understand the lingo used.

Remember card catalogs in libraries? The computer has its own card catalog that tells it where all the files are. That's known as the directory.
Sibling link error indicates something is wrong with one of the cards, making the computer lost. Now the computer will put forth a bunch of gobbledy gook to fix this error, but you can do it.
Since the issue is with the external hard disk, you must select it with Disk Utility's First Aid selected. There you will repair the disk. If it can't repair the disk, you will need to use a more powerful tool. The question is, is your data backed up elsewhere, or is it not? If it is not, the same symptoms of a bad directory can also implicate a dying hard drive. You'll want a data recovery tool if you aren't backed up. If you are backed up, and there is nothing that can't be replaced on that external hard drive, get Alsoft Disk Warrior. This should fix most bad sibling link errors repair disk can't. When it can't, you can give up on the external hard disk.
P.S. Permissions has NOTHING to do with the directory. Do not worry about issues with permissions or attempting to repair it at this stage.

i have a powerbook g4 aluminum. i have an external hard drive for it. a simple tech 100gig portable drive, almost brand new. i dont know what happened to it, but one day i was starting my computer up with it attached. it wounldnt fully start up, said "waiting for local disks" so i uplugged the external hard drive. now it wont mount and will only show up in the disk utility of my friends macbook. i tried to verify and repair, and this is the message i got.

Hi, hjbugs, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Disconnecting the drive while your Powerbook was accessing it probably caused your problem. It may be repairable using DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro, but if you don't have access to one of those and aren't going to buy one, reformatting the drive with Disk Utility may be the only other way to make it usable again. If it contains data you need to recover first (i.e., data that isn't also stored on your internal HD or other storage media), download the free demo version of one of the data recovery utilities mentioned in this thread and use it to see what is recoverable. If the files you need are recoverable, buy the full version of one of the utilities and recover them.

Using Seagate External Hard Drive with both PC and Mac

So I bought this hard drive knowing that it can be used back and forth between Macs and PCs. I currently have a PC, but it's pretty old and I figure I will be getting a Mac after it dies. But currently I want to use it to get files from a Mac computer and when I connect it, it says "read only". How do I configure it to be able to transfer files with a Mac?

I have Mac Book Pro with Retinal Display Mac OS X 10.8.2 connected Time Capsule 1TB using wireless network. I recently purchased Seagate Backup Plus 3TB and I connected to TC. However, I cannot find the Seagate drive on the network or via Aiport Utility. I used to have Western Digitial My Book and was able to detect the hard drive on TC. I changed to Western Digital Passport 2TB and it did not work. I wondered why it is the case. Please help me to hook up Seagate Backup Plus. Thank you!

Make sure that the hard drive is formatted in Mac OS Extendeded (Journaled)
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so it is often necessary to use a powered USB hub with a hard drive.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply
If you have the correct format for the drive and sufficient power, the drive should appear in AirPort Utility

Now that I've partitioned my I Terabyte external drive to two partitions using the disk utility with one partition for Time Machine and one partition as my new "hard drive"...my internal drive on the MacBook almost filled....I wanted to move...pix, movies, music..etc to the new drive and have all future storage pointed to that drive not the internal drive....need to have space available on the original drive on the MacBook....How do I move existing stored data and point ongoining saved music..files...etc to the new drive...???

Using an external hard drive with Airport Extreme

I'd like to use an external hard drive to store movies and music through my Airport Extreme. The drive is connected to a powered usb hub which is connected to the Extreme. I can see the drive in Airport Utility but I can't figure out how to use it.

I have just tried to set up an Airport Extreme with an external hard drive at home. I have 4 computers connected to the "network" - an iMac, a MacBookPro and 2 x windows machines. A printer is connected wirelessly to the two Macs.
I cannot find the hard drive - I have tried the steps mentioned by Bob Timmons Mar 17 2010, but the only things I see under "Shared" in Finder are the iMac and the printer - not the Airport Extreme (seems odd??), not the windows machines, and most importantly, not the hard drive connected to the USB port on the Airport Extreme.
I therefore expect that the iMac and printer are connected wirelessly and directly, rather than through my network (& I'm happy for the printer to be connected this way, but I do need the PCs and the hard drive all networked).
According to my network connection, (in top bar on the screen) I am definitely connected to the network - yet nothing else shows in finder??
I do, however, see the USB hard Drive when I go into Finder>Applications>Utilities>AirportUtility.app, under my Airport Extreme >Disks. I've also gone through all the set up procedures for "File Sharing."
I have read other posts about formatting the hard drive ether FAT32 or NFTS - is this something I now need to do?? If so, which one should I use, and once I do it, will I then see it?
Presumably, in order to format the Hard Drive, I will need to disconnect it from the Airport Extreme, and connect it directly to one of the Macs too?
My apologies for so many questions, but this is all very technical stuff for the non-techie layperson.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide on one or more of the questions / issues.
