Multicam Appears as One Clip

I am trying to set up my multicam edit. I used four cameras. I synched using a slate.
When I open the angle display, I see only one angle.
When I click on the multicam clip in the browser, the four angles in the project timeline are abutted one after the other. They should appear on top of each other.
I don't know what's the problem.
I'm using FCP X 10.1.1 on a late 2013 MacBook Pro.

This is what project/timeline looks like. The clips/angles should be on top of each other.
Could it be that FCP X will not multicam edit with DV. I shot with the Canon HV40.

  • Multicam Edit - One clip shifted

    Hi folks,
I'm editing a multicam concert shoot in miniDV format in FCP 6.0.5.
Although the cameras had timecode, they had different offsets,
and using the multicam offset adjustment (ctl-shift-drag)
produced some really bizarre behavior, so I went back and
set in-points using an audio cue, recreated the multiclip
syncing with the in-points, dragged the multiclip into a timeline,
and then dragged the beginning of the multiclip to the left so
I could get all the footage before the in-points.
The resulting sync was very tight.
Now I have been editing a few minutes of this 50-minute take,
and one clip is getting weird. Every time I cut to it, it appears
in the timeline with a out-of-sync indicator. Every instance is
off by 8 frames. I can resync it (double-click, then ctl-option)
using the "pull in to sync" menu item, but it's still quite strange
that the clip seems to think it's offset in the first place.
Another clip in the multiclip seems to have drifted in sync
as well, although there is no numerical indication.
Has anyone experienced this? There are a lot of edits done
and a lot more to do.
    Thanks for your time!
    Les

    Thanks for your responses.
Kevan, I don't think the problem is timecode breaks because I set FCP
to abort on dropped frames when I captured. It makes sense, however,
    that miniDV camcorders can drift.
Michael, I certainly plan on keeping the option open for chopping the
    performance into multiple multiclips.
I think the problem is "dragging the beginning of the multiclip to the left."
Perhaps, but what do you do when the only clear moment for syncing
all four cameras happens well into the first song? It's a real pity that all
cameras were not running when the clapperboard was struck!
The strange thing I'm experiencing is that sync seems to drift AFTER
I have the multiclip made, AFTER I've dragged the beginning of the
multiclip to the left. It's as if the act of editing has moved the sync.
It's a sunny morning here in northern California. I'm going to have
another coffee and look at this problem with fresh eyes.

  • I am trying to use two very long (2.5 hour HD) clips in multicam but FCPX only places one clip right after the other and does not create multicam. Is there a limit on clip size for multicam?

I am trying to use two very long (2.5 hour HD clips) and a 2.5 hour audio clip in multicam. One clip and the audio will ceate a multiclip but two clips will not. FCPX simply adds the second clip on at the end of the first. There must be some sort oflimitation on clip length. Is that correct and if so what is it?

The Angle field is not shown in the Inspector's default Basic View. With the clip selected in the event viewer, select the Info tab in the inspector. Change the view of the inspector from the default Basic View to the General View to be able to see the Angle field.
I assume you want to use the audio to do the sync. If FCP X has trouble syncing the audio, you can set a marker at the same chronological point in each clip before creating the multiclip. Then set Angle Syncronization to First Marker on the Angle and keep Use audio for syncronization checked. Your marker only needs to be close to get FCP X started. It will then use the audio to get final sync.

  • Why does my imported video appear on only one clip?

I had only made a  few in the past but I remember well that the footages appeared as several clips on the pane window. On this occasion I have but only one clip, despite the fact i wasnt running the camera constantly and took several bits of film footage.Rather confused by it

Actually i just finished importing in and it has appeared as two clips which still isnt much good as it limits my editing options somewhat. There area few bits i would like to remove , then add trans and effects as well

  • Long clip only appears as one frame in Project Story Board

My Imovie project only appears as one frame in Project Story Board. How do I get it back to an extended, multi-frame project so I can work on it?

In the Project Browser? There's a scale slider in the lower right which will let you zoom in. Is that what you mean?

  • Multicam sync not working.  simply makes one clip out of many, no angle choices

I used a three camcorder set up and after importing and selecting my three different clips and selecting New multicma clip....it processes (very quickly) and then shows me ONE clip in the angle viewer window because it puts all three of my clips back to back.  THerefore I cant cut between clips to make my edit in my timeline.  what am i doing wrong.  I have tried auto sync, marked all three clips and used first marker on clip.....this is killing me.
i got i to work one time out of the 6 i have tried

I have this problem too. I have two cameras & the multiclip command (using audio sync) processes very fast but does not give me two angles. Did you figure out how to fix this?

How do I sway one clip for another in Final Cut Pro 7? I am doing what it says in a book but it is not working. Thanks.

You drag the clip from the browser to the clip on the timeline. Wait till the timeline clip goes white. Drop it and pick from the menu that appears the replace option you want.

  • How to open only one clip at a time in the source monitor?

Ok the answer to this question may be simple.. hopefully...
At the moment each time I open a clip in the source monitor it adds it to the dropdown list.
Fine... but I am opening and closing hundreds of clips in a day and after a while I noticed it seemed to be slowing down the whole PPCS5.5 system.
It appears that PP seems to be keeping each clip I open... active.
Is there a way to allow only one clip to be open at a time in the source monitor... other than having to close them all first??? (would be ideal if there was some kind of shortcut like shift-doubleclick)

SonyZ7's can record to compact flash cards as well as tape, so I generally log and transfer from the cards.
So I guess I should do a bit more research on workflow's in Pr

  • How import from camcorder to iMovie as one clip?

When I import from my mini-dv camcorder (Canon) into iMovie '09, iMovie splits into many clips. The problem is, it gets confused and about 10% of the clips are like 0.1 sec and named something not related to date/time like the rest of the clips. As a result, they appear in the event library out of order, creating a mess. I just want to import as one clip to avoid this misordering. My objective is archive video from tape to hard drive. As background, I suspect the timecodes may be wacky on the mini-dv tape because it is a copy from an 8mm tape.
I have many of these mini-dv tapes so an answer to this problem will save me many hours. I can achieve a 1-clip import using Vidi, but it won't automatically stop recording so I can't start one importing when I go to bed.
    Thanks

I have the same problem. The video was created with a sony hcr-dc96 using the "smth int rec" mode. The would be a "time lapse video" in English. I suspect every frame looks like a new scene to the importer.
It imports and creates an even, but if I click on the event I get the beach ball and unresponsiveness, and eventual crash. Looking at the even library I can see there are 3249 files in the folder corresponding to that event.
Is there any way to recover using imovie? Do I need to import using some other means?

  • How to import mini dv tape as one clip?

I am trying to backup some old mini dv tapes.  When I import from fcpx it splits the clips into individual files each time there's a scene change.  I don't want this to occur and would like just one long clip to be recorded.  How do I do this?  Is there a way to stop fcpx from splitting clips?
Any help would be great appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Scott

Thanks Andy for giving the time and energy to try and solve this.  I really appreciate it.
The sorting option is new to me so thanks for telling about that (I've just downloaded the 30-day trial version of FCPX last  night to hopefully address this one single issue that iMovie cannot do so I am totally new to FCPX but it's pretty intuitive especially being familiar with iMovie. This is my first and only version of FCP and will likely buy it if it can help me with this one huge hurdle).
There are several configurations that can be tried for both "Group Clips By" and "Arrange Clips By" but I was unable to find the right combination for both categories to give me the results I need.  Perhaps I've not done this correctly and all I need is the right coaching for what both settings should be at.
I'm not sure exactly what you are asking about for the Inspector view information.  I will try to attach an image of my screen.  It appears that each clip has the label of what day it was shot and what time.  The Master video however has clips arranged completely out of chronological order and so there lies the problem.  Perhaps you were asking about something else though and I'm just not sure what it is.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME YOUR THOUGHTS!  It's kind of impossible to find help on this or a complete definitive answer so your time is very much appreciated.  If you travel to McCall, Idaho for a ski trip I will buy you a lunch or copious amounts of microbrewed beer.

  • Hi, I am trying to join two clips after splitting one clip to edit 'ums' and 'ahs' in a sentence.

    Hi,
I am having trouble joining clips in iMovie. Every time I try the 'join clip' choice under 'edit' is grayed out. I would like to join two clips from time to time -- not necessarily two clips that were once one and then split. Just two clips. Maybe I did not want the material in between.
This time, I did select a section of a clip during an interview to take out 'ah, ah, ah... um' and deleted that section. And in doing so I created two clips. Now I'd like to rejoin them for a seamless sentence with out the jumping from one clip to the next. But 'join clip' is grayed out.
    Thanks.

    Thank you.
But I wish I could join them before I share so I can make sure the transition is smooth. Right now it's obvious there's a 'jump' to the next clip, not smooth. I'd like to be able to splice and edit have it be seamless. Say, I want to add something a speaker says 5 minutes down the road to a sentence he says now, cutting and pasteing, and having it appear that he said it all at once. Right now it's obvious there was some cutting and pasteing. I was thinking joining the clips would smooth this out.

  • Import whole movie as one clip in imovie

Hi, not sure if I am posting this in the right place now - ah just looked down below my post and it appears it will put it in the imovie forum, good
I have never used iMovie.  I've used several video editing products in past years, but haven't done much recently and now I have a deadline of Christmas eve to get this done.
A good few years ago we transferred all of my wife's family home super 8 film  to DV format and then spent weeks editing them down to a very nice 20 minute video with music.  Made a bunch of DVDs but over the years, they seem to have all stopped working or been lost.  The master is still on DV tape and I now have my sony camera linked up to my MBP and it seems to work very well once I got the firewire to thunderbolt connector.  It controls the camera perfectly, better than a lot of products that I used to use.
So my problem is ithat when I imported the video, it cut everything up into clips.... and when I put all the clips into a movie they do not play seamlessly... as I don't want to do any editing on this, I just want it all as one long clip so I can export it into suitable formats for my sister-in-law to download on Christmas day...
So I have gone back to the import process and I couldn't seem to find any settings or anything for adjusting how the video is imported from my camera.
I certainly hope this can be done... not so much video editing I want to do, but more of a conversion process I guess, any help would be urgently and greatly appreciated!

hmm, after 24 hours of searching etc I have come to the conclusion that iMovie is pretty rubbish at functionality and a way for Apple to push it's iDrive and get me to pay money for it as well... :-(
I tried putting all my clips into a movie, but the audio skips between the clips and I can't reduce the transition to 0 -  so actually no way of recreating my whole movie again and no way of capturing the whole movie in one clip - granted I've only been using this for a day, but after years of video editing I cant say the interface settting or anything else is intuitive about it... seemed promising at first, but in the end I got my old version of Adobe Premier out and it did what I needed first time, no fuss.  Afraid iMovies is heading for the trash.

  • Changing playback quality to 1/4 does not work for this one clip...

So, I've recently ran into a really annoying problem when editing one of my videos, even though I click the 1/4 playback quality, this one clip still plays in full. My recording setup has not changed, I still and have always been using my iPod Touch and this is the first time I encountered this

It's likely that the resolution of the footage from the iPod Touch is much higher than the rest of your clips. In this case, the other clips will appear to be much more pixelated than the one from the iPod when you turn down the playback resolution.
Rest assured that the iPod footage is being affected by the resolution setting, even though it might not be as visually obvious as the other clips.

  • IMovie import from handycam results in juddering - but only on one clip!

I have one clip on my Sony HDR-SR5 which iMovie 8 doesn't seem to be able to import cleanly.
This one clip appears to import with no issues but when I play it back in iMovie the image judders. The sound is absolutely fine and the original movie on the camera plays perfectly. The imported iMovie event makes everyone in the film look like they have palsy.
There are some other clips on the camera too which cause iMovie to crash as soon as it tries to import them, but that's a separate matter. I have successfully imported about 30 other clips from the camera so far, some of which are from either side of these rogue clips. They are all HD clips and all were taken using the same settings.
Does anyone have any ideas why this might happen, and what I can do to get around it?

Mmmm, doesn't it just do your head in when you want something to go wrong and it doesn't.
I took my camera out to the garden and took some quite violent panning shots to test in various workflows. Back at my mac I connected the camera and opened imovie, played the clip in preview in the import window - no judder - a little ghosting but that's to be expected.
Imported at best quality and played this back in imovie, again- no judder - a little ghosting but that's to be expected, was really quite surprised I didn't have judder and a little disappointed since my intention was to import the clip in parallels using the sony supplied software and see if I could see a difference.
I exported the movie at the large setting- no judder. Mmmm
Not deterred I continued the test, imported using the sony software (gee, it just reminds me why I use a mac) and exported to mpeg2, which is the only option available. The first thing I noticed was the interlacing which no matter what I did I couldn't get rid of, strange but of no worry since this isn't what I was testing for, but the video did judder.
Exactly what conclusion I can draw from this I really don't know, but if sony software gives us these issues as it seems to do, I guess we can't point too many fingers at imovie.

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!
