Multicam editing without timecode and audio?

Hello!
I am editing a multi-cam interview with the unfortunate issue of 1. having no audio recorded from the secondary camera, and 2. the camera operators did not sync timecode or set the right time/date (DSLRs) and appear to have started/stopped rolling at different times, breaking up the interview into short clips...so I've been trying to figure out, what is the best way to go about this??  Is it possible to use the multi-cam edit without audio, and if so how do I get around it being broken into small clips that don't quite match?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi caleb116,
Welcome to the Support Communities!
The multicam editing feature in FCPX will help you work around these obstacles.  The link below explains the multicam editing workflow:
Final Cut Pro X Help: Multicam editing workflow
http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.1/#ver10e087fd
Having the date, time and time zone set on your recording devices before the shoot is helpful for FCPX to create multicam clips automatically.  Normally, you can sync automatically using the audio in your clips.   However, since you don’t have that option in this case, you can just sync from the start of each clip and then enter the multicam editor and manually line up the angles.

In addition to the Final Cut Pro X Help manual, there are additional resources, including web based tutorials, to explore multicam editing.  Check them out here:

I hope this information helps ....

  • Multicam editing with multi-track audio?

Does anyone know how to do multicam editing with multi-track audio?  Apparently, the multicam editor can only see Audio Track #1 in the Source Sequence.  I tried mixing my original audio tracks #1, #2, and #3 (submixes) to the master audio track in the Source Sequence and if I listen to the new Multicam Sequence (the nested Source Sequence) all 3 original audio tracks are there (combined), but when I go to do the multicam edit in the multicam monitor window, I"m back to just Audio Track #1 of the Source Sequence and audio tracks #2 and #3 are missing ???  Thanks for your help!

I have run the gambit of different techniques. The one that is most efficient is listed in Colin Brougham's response number 9
There's a far easier way to do this: after you sync your angles, hold down Alt/Opt and select or lasso just the video portions of the clips, and nest those. The audio stays put, but the video moves into the nest, and you can then enable Multicam on the nested sequence.
One of the best things about this is that it circumvents Premiere Pro's totally BS "Render Required Files" nonsense.
I must admit the ALT lasso tip was one of the best features I have seen. Like a revelation when I discovered it some months ago while watching a tutorial about something not related. As far as the "Rendering required files" That was kicking my but for a while doing multicam editing. If you do edit both audio and video in multicam you might find the "Rendering required files" issue. Basically the problem stems from having a lot of cuts to process at the same time both audio and video. 1080P is a huge amount of data when you multiply it by four cameras plus multiple audio cuts and effects ,(audio gain, Deessing etc.) So Pre-rendering the audio by clicking in the main sync timeline and then at the top Click Sequence/Render Audio. This takes care of the issue when you are cutting multiple tracks at once. It is a good practice to work from a main sync sequence and then copy that to a new sequence  preserving the main sequence as unchanged. I found the solution is to "render audio" only in the master sync sequence this will then pass through to all subsequent copies that are made "downstream" allowing you to easily clean up anything. If you make a mistake you can always start from the main sync sequence and not lose too much time. Takes a little bit of time to render but once that is done you can cut all tracks video and audio like butter. I have been doing a lot of 1080p multicam editing over this past year and had quite learning curve. Most of the work I do is multicam editing by choice it is much faster for me to edit this way because I am used to working in live events where we need to look at all shots at the same time make a "best choice" and keep rolling. Have fun with it!

I have read a number of forum treads and I'm at my wits end.  I want to capture in HD edit it in real time and export to DVD, BlueRay and Flash. I have spent hours on support and updated every driver and configuration setting that I know. PLEASE will someone tell me what do I need to do to get this to work?
Is it the DELL? Do I go to a Mac? (Ironic that most adobe tutorials are on Macs) Do I need a different solution? I'm going crazy!  Maybe it's me and I'm capturing and creating sequences all wrong. Please provide a workflow that is working for you. Let me know if you need more specifics. Thank you in advance!

  • After I create a flash swf file how do I edit the video and audio?

I created a nice flash animation, but it appears there are no video editing program which edit swf files.
Why would flash create a file that cannot be edited in video editing programs including their own premiere pro?
I have to get a program to convert the swf to an flv file and then I can use a video editing program?
I tried exporting it to an avi, but much of the functionality was lost. I am looking at a man standing there instead of
moving his lips while talking, for example. Am I missing something? Please advise. Thanks!

If you have an swf file then you don't have a video to edit. You can export to a limited number of video formats from Flash. In order to do that successfully, you need to prepare your file so that it will export as you want. This means that you will have to produce the entire file as a linear sequence using the timeline and with no interactivitiy. You can use a limited amount of Actionscript, but it is a very small subset of the available language. Your audio must be in the timeline.
Here is an Adobe help file for exporting to video: Flash Professional Help | Exporting Graphics and Videos

  • IMovie lags when editing video and audio

I just bought iMovie yesterday from the Mac App Store. I recorded a DJ set and wanted to edit my Video with better quality audio that i recorded seperately. I find that when editing my video and audio (Matching up audio), there is alot of lag. Especially when scrolling through the video to drag the audio to a certain point to get the audio in sync. This is very frustrating and i feel i just got cheated paying for iMovie 11 when it cant even do a simple job. Please help me resolve this. Thank you!

    Hi
This is not easy in iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 -
What and how did You record the extra audio ? With what tool ?
To be able to keep audio in sync should be recorded with a device with TimeCode. Else it will be near to impossibly. Or extremely tedious even if FinalCut is used.
I would use FinalCut and keep original audio on track 1 and 2 - and the extra on track 3 and 4. Then Show Wave-form - then see if they can match up to each others.
But doing this in iMovie - is nearly impossibly.
IF AUDIO HAS - TimeCode - and there are no drop outs on video or audio then You should be able to exchange original audio with the extra recorded one in iMovie and even move it frame by frame (1/30 sec or 1/25 sec) - in FinalCut audio can be moved much more exact eg 1/100 sec or within a frame
(my miniDisc recorder - is FAR away from exact enough for this)
    Yours Bengt W

  • Multiclip without timecode

i've organized and synced 4 video tracks in the timeline but they all have completely different timecode. when i create a multiclip sequence, the tracks are scattered all over the timeline based upon timecode data. so how do i do a "live" multicam edit without using any timecode info? can't i just ignore timecode data and edit multicam based on where i place them in the sequence? can i delete or reset all tc data?

Did you set the keyboard layout to multicam from the Tools menu? you also have to hold down the cmd key and the number on the pad.
Also you can certainly sync a number of cameras without matching timecode by selecing the syncronization in the pop up menu after selecting the clips to be put into a multiclip. I do it all the time.
You don't have to edit this in a "multi track" sequence. Read the manual about this from pages II-247 through II-287 You'll learn everything about it.

  • CS6 Multicam Edit - Is there a way to turn off some camera angles when the system gets strained?

I'm doing a multicam edit in cs6 and the 5 camera angles I have are straining my system.  I have two main angles and three kind of back up go pro angles that I don't need most of the time.  But I don't want to get rid of them either.  Is there a way to turn off monitoring some of the angles at times so that video will playback smoother?  Then when I need the other angles, switch them back on when I want?  The video is so choppy with all 5 angles monitoring at once that multicam editing is basically impossible.  I'm editing on what's supposed to be a very fast system at work but it's not fast enough...Thanks!

I'm not aware of any way to do this. You might want to invest in a battery case if this is a problem for you; our users here all have them.
Please submit your feature request to Apple at this link: http://www.apple.com/feedback; I agree it's a good idea.

  • Multicam Editing in Premiere CC Issue

I downloaded th trial version in Premiere CC and try to edit a multicam project edit about 30 min of footage saved it and close Premiere CC after reopen each cut made on timeline start with the begining of video so like i had 3 cameras and all of them start recording on diferent time i got like black image all over and sometime when i had switched to the camer x what start recording 1st is showing the image
    ........ any help?

Seems like this thread is the same issue just in different words: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1237142?tstart=0
Sadly, I found out the hard way. I'm another lost soul that was bit by this bug. And on my first day of editing with Premiere Pro CC after using CS6 since last fall. Day one and I already have to shelve the new software til it's fixed. So sad. Makes me really wonder actually how this was never caught and solved in all the time leading up to the release given that if you make any adjustments to your multicam that rewrite any previous multicam edits, then save and reopen the project the issue pops up. Seems like a pretty huge bug to look over or miss.  If it was "known" then how can you justify releasing it? It essentially cripples this feature rendering it almost useless.
The bug occurs whenver you go back and "re-edit" or "re-write"...as in hit play and make new cuts as it plays OVER previous edits that you made on a multicam sequence. Simply start any multicam edit, make a few cuts. Stop...go back a bit and hit play and redo some of those cuts in the multicam window (which will overwrite the previous cuts you made). Now save, close and reopen...and there you have a screwed up sequence just like the above videos show.
This is very disappointing. Multicam is broken in Premiere Pro...again. Sad.
    Mark Mapes wrote:
edited: As a workaround, after saving and closing an edited multicam sequence, we recommend making subsequent edits through the Timeline rather than the Program Monitor's Mullticam mode.
The caveat here is you must NEVER re-do ANY of your previous edits before you EVER save and close. So if you stop a multicam midway (even on your first time throught it) and decide you want to re-do the previous edits, DO NOT DO IT using the program monitor's multicam window. You now have to use the rolling edit tool to adjust your previous cuts. If you go back, hit play and write over any previous edits the way you're "supposed to" using the multicam window then you're screwed upon reopening your project. This is gonna be fun to see how long it takes for Adobe to fix their broken editing program.

  • Multicam editing "open-format" in FCP6??...& can an iMac C2D 2.8 handle it?

Hello. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but...
In FCP6, is the multicam editing feature "open-format"? In otherwords, can you multicam edit HD (HDV) and SD (DV) resolution video together?
I've read that in previous versions (FCP5, I believe), this was not possible. But I believe the timeline wasn't open-format back then either. Just wondering if this limitation regarding multicam still exists, before I plunk down $1300 on FCS2. (I currently am trying to learn FCE4, but realized I may have blundered in that purchase, as much of what I want to edit is multicam in nature--i.e. concerts, interviews).
Also, on my machine, about how many "angles" could I have running in a multicam edit? (I have an iMac 24" Aluminum 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo). Could I say, do a multicam edit of 2 HD streams plus 2 or 3 SD streams (for a total of 4-5 angles)?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the bump! At least my "open-format" question seems like something someone with FCS2 should be able to answer.
Anyway, your questions regarding my setup are good ones. (Just added some of that to my profile)...
I currently am using a G-RAID2 1TB external drive, connected via FW800 to the iMac, as my scratch drive (http://www.g-technology.com/products/G-RAID2.cfm). (The iMac also has a FW400 port which I use to import video from camera). If necessary, I could always add another G-RAID2 (or something similar), if having two scratch drives would help (it would either have to be daisy-chained to the existing drive, or plugged in via FW400--not sure which would work best for multicam).
Honestly, I'm not sure about the exact formats. I'd have to look into it. But I can tell you the HD footage is from Canon HV20 camcorders, which use mini-DV tape to record HDV. This I have imported into FCE4, using, I believe AIC as required by FCE4. The footage is 1080i, I believe. If FCP6 handles the importing differently or uses a different codec (It doesn't, does it?), I can always re-import, if necessary.
The SD footage is/will be from standard, run-of-the-mill consumer mini-DV cameras. I believe one camera is anamorphic 16:9, and another (must've been an older camera), appears to do 16:9 by simply letterboxing the image.
    All NTSC, no PAL.
And, yes, I'd like to avoid having to "upscale" the footage from the SD cameras, for time, pain-in-the-arse, and storage space reasons. (I read somewhere on the web that this was a suggested workaround for FCP5 users). The SD footage will mainly be used for occasional cut-away/alternate angle shots. Would prefer not to have to go thru THAT much trouble for that footage.
    Thanks.

  • I have a band video that I want to edit. In iMove 09, I could clip to crop or add a transition or both without altering the audio. In iMovie 11, the audio lower or drops out when I clip for and use a transtion. Is there a setting to preven this?

Thanks for that info! Even in my time answering questions on iMovie Discussion Group, I never had a good understanding of when and how Optimize Movie came into play. I always would import as Optimized and Large Size and figured that was good enough. But knowing you got much, much more flexibility doing it the way you describe gives me a much better understanding of the different routes you can take into the Event Library.

  • Multicam Editing and Audio

    Hello Forum,
does anyone know if there a way to select a different audio track separately from the video track when editing in the multicam mode?
For example, if there a way for an editor to have a video from Camera 1 and Sound from Camera 2?
Would appreciate a direct technique or a workaround suggestion.
    Best,
    Dimitri Vorontzov

Depending on how often you want to do this, it might get tedious, but:
Hold down the Alt key and click on the audio portion you want to change; this will select just the audio clip. Right-click on it, go to Multi-Camera, and then select the camera you want to use for audio. The video will stay whatever you had originally edited into place, but the audio will be pulled from the other camera.
If you want to use audio from a specific camera for the whole edit, there is an option in the multicam monitor flyout menu called "Audio Follows Video." If you uncheck that, you can pick what audio track you want to use at the bottom of the MC monitor. Premiere will add edits, but the audio will always be from the camera you specified. I'm not sure which option you're really after, but hopefully that helps.

  • Multicam editing and expanded audio components

Hi. I will try to describe the issue I am having:
    1. I am editing a multicam clip and have expanded the audio components
    2. I make a video only switch to another angle (from angle A to angle B)
    3. I decide I want to move my video edit point slightly so I use the trim tool ('T') to move the video edit to the left or right
    4. The audio edit point does not move with the video edit point while the audio components are expanded, leaving the edit point for the video offset from the edit point for the audio.
Is there a way I can slide the edit point for video and audio together OR do I need to collapse the audio components before I do this?
    Thanks

  • In multicam editing Im cutting a part and the audio is staying. The video part has been cut, but the original audio continues to play. I made several similar edits earlier and had no problems. Please help!! Thanks

Im using a multiclip as well. All volumes on cameras have been muted. The source of audio is pulling my hair out!! Thank you O Smart ones!

Absolutely nothing to do with top or bottom or whatever order they're set in the angle editor, though it's practical to set the audio at the bottom as you're not going to be cut, but it can be anywhere. In can bet in the middle if the stack. What is import is what is the active angle when you edit the clip into the timeline. You can change it afterwards, but it's easiest to do when you first make the edit into the timeline. In the angle viewer you set the active angle. That's what gets edited into the timeline as the first cut.
    This is the angle viewer.
Cam 2 is the active angle. When it's edited into the timeline that's the video and audio that appears. In your case you would set bounce as the active angle. You can change the video in the timeline after you set the angle viewer to cut or switch video only. Then bounce remains as the audio.

  • Capturing digital audio and editing without rendering?

We have a collection of LDs and VCRs that need to be converted to DVD. For this purpose, I purchased a Canopus ADVC 300 which appears to be working great.
The perfectionist that I am, I'm using Optical Digital Audio to import audio from the LD Player directly into my Mac Pro.
(Interesting note here. While FCE is incapable of importing video from one source and audio from another, QuickTime Player X is very capable. FCE is officially behind the times. There is almost certainly an upgrade in the works.)
I can import the video from the Canopus directly into FCE. The digital audio has to be captured by something else; I'll probably use SoundTrack (the non-Pro version comes with FCE).
The digital tracks are 44.1 kHz 24 bit (integer), but FCE does not have an option for this offering only 48 kHz 32 bit floating point instead.
    Q. What do I need to do to be able to use the audio in FCE without rendering?
Additionally, even if I import the movie made with QuickTime Player X, the sound will not play in FCE; the 44.1 kHz difference?
Q2. I plan on buying an AC3-RF Demodulator to decode the 5.1 AC3 audio from LDs which make this audio available. Does anyone know which program I'll need to capture all of the tracks for consequent use in FCE?
    cheers,
    Gregory

If you have QuickTime Pro, you should be able to open the audio files in QT Player, then export them at the sample rate which matches your FCE Sequence. FWIW, many of my students use CD audio (@44.1kHz) in their FCE projects with success, despite my urging to convert the sample rates so that everything matches. They are, however, working with just a few minutes of audio which is not synched to their video.

  • FCP 5.0 Multicam editing and main sound

I have 3 angles shots. How do I leave a main sound from camera 1 in the time line when when I do multicam editing?
Do I first do only video cuts and bring the main sound in or it can be done differently?
    Thanks.

I didn't feel like going through the manual either on this one --- here's what I do, which is by no means the easiest automatic thing.
After I drag my multiclip to the timeline, I grab the track I want audio from and place it with the multiclip. A couple locks & unlocks, a couple of deletes, and I've got the multiclip video with the audio from the track I want audio from.
It's not the automatic thing, but I generally am working with 2+ hour long multiclips, and only have to go through this once per project.
