Multicam in final cut hd?

First time editing with multiple cameras...trying to sync video tracks... can't seem to find a multiclip function. Am I overlooking something obvious here? Thanks in advance.
(and yes, I know it's an old version, so consider myself spanked... however, it's what I have to work with for now).

Forget the subclips; work only with the full, uninterrupted clips from each camera.
Step 1: determine which clip will be used most in the finished edit. Load that clip into the Viewer and locate a common point that you know appears on both clips: a camera flash or loud noise, for example. Place a marker at that point on the first clip, then place it on track V1.
Step 2: load the second clip into the viewer and place a marker at the common point, then place that clip on track V2.
Step 3: unlink the audio from the video for both clips.
Step 4: find the markers on each clip and line them up in the Timeline. It will help to zoom in on the Timeline to make sure the markers are lined up perfectly.
Step 5: double-click the clip on V2 to load it back into the Viewer. Click on the Motion tab and set the Scale to 50% and use the Center control to place it in one corner. The video in the Canvas should now look like a picture-in-picture. The point of this is to allow you to see both shots at the same time while you edit.
Step 6: as you go through the Timeline, cut away any parts of the clip on V2 that you don't want to keep.
Step 7: once you've finished cutting out the parts of the clip on V2 that you don't want, select ALL remaining clips on V2 and select "Remove Attributes" from the pop-up menu. Then select Basic Motion. All clips on V2 will return to 100% scale and be centered.
Step 8 (optional): while the clips on V2 are still selected, you can Shift Drag them to V1.
Step 9: go through the Timeline again, adjusting any edit points as needed. You can also add transitions at this point.
NOTE: this process will only work IF you recorded/captured the footage for both cameras as one long clip. If either camera was stopped/started during the multi-camera shoot, you will need to re-sync for each and every shot.

  • Final Cut and Audio in Multicam

I recently upgraded to the latest version of final cut pro x.
With one audio chanel that did not change in a multicam movie, but the video chanel do change (did not use their audio).
Everytime in which the camera in the multicam changes (on rendering only) I get a split second pause (or dropout) in the audio.
I have been making multicam movies for a long time now, never had this problem with the old version. Doing everything the same way.
Can anyone tell me how I can avoid this - other then deleting the cut in the audio (which are in sync with the changes in the cameras)
    Thank you.

The cut where made across the multicam edit, each time I changed cameras, but the audio was constant.(audio had cuts in the wave form to match the video)
The video and audio play correctly in the time line.
The problem is after I export or compress the video. Then the audio drop outs happen.
This never used to happen with the previous version with all things constant.
    Thanks for your help.

  • New to Mac - Configuration Hardware Advise for Final Cut Professional

I am switching over for Avid IBM to Finalcut. I am going to be doing a lot of documentary video editing in HD and after going to the apple store and I am seeking some experienced hardware advice. I don't want to have any regrets 6 months into this since I need hit the ground running and cost is pretty much not a limitation. I will be docking into a desk suite with my mac book i just don't know how much on the road editing I will be doing. Would like to do a large monitor and a color coded keyboard later.
    My question are:
15" or 17"? 17 has ATA drive slot faster ext drive access. I don't know final cut desktop workspace enough yet whether the ext 1" will be appreciated. Its a lot bigger and not much more weight 1 lb.
Internal Drive? - Solid state is very expensive. Looks like 500 gig largest internal
Ext drives - Going with 7200rpm - my projects are going to be about 30 mins each. I'm thinking more smaller drives than one big 4 TB drive. What is a good rule of thumb for how much drive per final edit time for a shot intensive project? Recommendations for running compressed or uncompressed?
How much ram? 4 or 8 gig? (I'm also thinking 8 just of resale later when I upgrade)
Software - Do I want the Final Cut Suite? other stuff I may need?
Training? Online computer guided? I like software training the best I'm getting the $100
    Cabling etc?
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. I have to purchase this system asap and make the plunge into a mac from IBM Avid.

I'm taking up on this board a very, very radical p.o.v.:
    Speed is no issue.
When using optimzed media, even my stoneold c2d/4GB Mini I had before had no trouble to handle multicam-streams... (Windows-using-friends in shock "Really??")
A faster hardware outperforms when? On transcoding/rendering. But:
    a) you can start editing BEFORE transcoding is accomplished (one of the many marvels of FCPX I don't understand but like)
    b) you can keep editing a project while it is exported .. one of the many marvels of... ok, we had that
    c) '33% faster' means what? 20min instead of 30? wowy, use this spare time for writing a book, healing cancer, give world peace..
No, as long as you're not in a newsroom and HAVE to deliver on time, as long as you don't get paid that extra 1.200€ by your clients ('cause you're an amateur like me), it is plain nonsense to dig into the specs of costly SSDs, GraCas, internal busses, tranffer rates and what not.
    ... if you're a 'hackintosh'-builder or a Linux-woreshipper, all this stuff is a wonderful, time-eating hobby.
    But for using FCPX 10-20x a year for some 20min YouTube-family-video... ?
    c'mon!! Get alive!
    Speed is no issue.

  • Audio And Video out of sync in Final Cut, but not in quicktime

I heave searched the forums to no end to find the solution to this issue, unfortunatley, I have not solved the problem.
I am using Final Cut 4.5 on a G4 running OSX 10.3.4. This system has worked perfectly for years with no problems. Neither the system, hardware, or software has ever been changed on this machine. Suddenly last week, despite perfect sync while previewing the capture, the Audio and Video were of sync in Final Cut, but when checked in quicktime, there were no problems. That is how I eventually figured out this was a final cut problem.
By out of sync, I don't mean it is by a specific number of frames that can be adjusted and then everything is fine, the sync seems to drift so that if you edit the audio to be in sync in one part of the video, it won't be at the end. Also, it is out of sync from the first frame played, not a gradual drift.
This is definitely not an issue of frame rates or final cut settings as will be evident by the steps I took below to find the source of this problem.
This is what I did to attempt to fix the problem:
    - Check drives using disc utility and repair permissions
    - Remove Final Cut Preferences using Apple guidelines
    - Switch hard drives
    - Delete Final Cut and reinstall newer version of final cut (since the capture files played fine on Final Cut 5.1 on another machine)
    - reinstall entire OSX 10.3.9, wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Final Cut 5.1
    - switch ram slots, and even replace ram with different sticks from another G4 machine
None of these solutions worked. Is there some hardware problem with my G4 that is suddenly causing Final Cut to play audio and video out of sync?
Hope you can help, otherwise this otherwise great G4 is going in the dumpster!
    Thanks

For what it's worth, I'm having what looks to be the same problem. Driving me insane. Here's what's going on-
    Editing in FCP 6.0.2
QT was just updated to 7.3.1 the other day (hmm)
On an MacBookPro machine, OS 10.5.1
Software updater says everything's up to date of course.
    DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal (footage was shot at 24PA on a DVX100b)
In Quicktime, the file previews fine, everything's in sync, everyone's happy. In FCP, the video and audio are wildly out of sync. I did a test inside of quicktime and sliced out a small portion of the media clip and did a "save as" and this small slice played in sync in FCP. However, this did not work for the entire clip. Clip is weighing in at 5.58GB for a 32 minute run.
I'm trying to multicam 2 tapes together and manually syncing these up is proving to be difficult at best. When anyone gets any ideas/leads/patches, let us know.

  • Question about Final Cut Pro X and miniDV's

    Hi,
I'm thinking in buying Final Cut Pro X and use it to import and edit many hours of footage that I have on miniDV's tapes.
I've heard that to work with miniDV's, Final Cut Pro X is not great, especially regarding timecode, etc. True?
Any thoughts and advises? Many thanks!

My experience is if you're shooting SD then you shouldn't have a problem unless you are trying to load a full hour. When I tried that, the computer went crazy and loaded the video as thousands of clips just a few frames long.
That was supposed to be for a multicam shoot. I went back to FCP 7 where I've never had a single problem after at least 80 multicam projects with as many as eight cameras.
I'll have to try it again in FCP X now that there have been two updates since my last try.
I've also used HDV mini DV tapes shot with a Canon HV40. The video looked great in FCP X and I had no problem with clips that were 2-3 minutes long.
I did not load my HDV clips as ProRes in FCP X because, when I did try it, they looked like total crap. I was afraid my finished exported video would also look like that.

  • RAID block size for final cut pro x

Just got one of the new late 2012 27" iMacs and a 6 TB LaCie Thunderbolt drive. Can finally edit the video I took last spring. I'll be using Final Cut Pro X, and doing a lot of multicam stuff with 4 or 5 views and a separate audio track. The LaCie came formatted as a mirrored RAID. I'm going to change that to 0 (Striped RAID set), but am wondering what block size to set. The default is 32k, but I have read that this ought to be increased to the max (256k) for video editing. I have also read it should NOT be increased. And the posts I have read have all been at least 3 years old. So let me ask you all--what block size would you recommend for my situation?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Eddie...
This depends on what kind of source footage you are editing....
For compressed Video, Audio and Uncompressed audio 128k
I have only had BAD results with 256k. 64 is also weird. Whereas 32 is fine.
All my RAIDs have 128k for audio/video editing
you can go further if you editing Image Sequences.. but according to my own findings and I have been dealing with raid since years.... 128k does the job the best.
Rule of thumb.... The smaller the file sizes you are putting the RAID the smaller the block size. And vice versa.
I.e. You would cripple the raid performance if storing a database on it, having a block size of 256. In case of servers and OS 32k would be a good choice, perhaps even 16k if supported.

  • What does modified file mean? and other Final Cut Library questions...

1.After updating to Libraries and the newest version of Final Cut X some of my media including multi cam clips and regualr clips show the red "modified media" screen. How do I get rid of this and get it back to the original media? Do I relink project files??
    2. Before I updated to Libraries I was running all my media as proxy. Now that I have updated, I have to run it as optimized or origional or a red "Missing Proxy" screen appear. How can I go back to using proxy media?
    3. Before I updated to the Libraries and the newest version of Final Cut X I would store my raw footage on external harddrive 1 and I would create all my projects under harddrive 2. I was told that its much better to do it this way because it puts less strain on external harddrives. Is this true? Also, if I choose to keep doing it this way, how would I do this with the new Libraries set up?
4-Whats the best way to backup Libraries on multiple harddrives in case a harddrive fails? I used to be able to back up just the projects but now when I try to back up a Library it's too many gigs.
    Any advice would be great.

I upgraded to 10.0.1 in the middle of a complex multicam (6 Sony XDCam 422 HD @ 50 MB/Sec) with many effect/title/transitions w/o any issues - so I keep wondering -- what's happening with others?
Yes, relink to original (if needed) transcode more proxies/optimised (if needed).  Inside of your libraries (control click in finder) you should be able to see all that is there in the package contents - but don't alter anything in the Finder.
Since I upgraded, I routinely generate masters ofo my daily Projects in PorRes and copy to my Lacie Raid. I copy the new (daily) library(s) to the Lacie then delete the ones from the previous day (this Takes time as I secure delete) - i update the Final Cut Pro Backups folder to the lacie every day. Once a week I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup whatever has changed (and archive what is unique to the b/u drive) via a USB 3 drive.
The Libraies are getting huge but I prefer working off my internal Flash storage because it is so fast.  I never used to do that - I preached putting "scrtach" on a drive seperate from OS but now my internal is so big and fast & since it is PCIe Flash & doesn't write like platters- I'm in love with the speed of renders and exports. I work from it.
That is what I do & haven't had a hiccup.  Theonly surprise is that System Pal has twice shown me that I was down to only a few megs of ram (from 16 gigs). So I watch that.
    Good luck

  • Which MBP is better for Final Cut Pro?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to replace my 2010 MacBook Pro 13" on a budget. I'd like to get a retina 13" macbook pro, either the refurb 2012 with 8GB ram and the i5, or the refurb 2013 with 4GB ram, i5 and the new Intel Iris graphics card. Which is better for medium to intense final cut pro, photoshop, and dreamweaver work? Does the Intel Iris card make a big difference or should I be getting more RAM?
    Thanks

First, check the Model Identifier in your Mac's Apple Menu > 'About this Mac' > 'More info' > 'System Report' > 'Hardware Overview'
Next, check OWC to find out exactly how much RAM your proposed MBPs can take. Apple gives correct specs at time of development. Later, larger RAM is developed that will work with some Mac models.
For video, FCPX will use as many processor cores as are available. It will use all 12 cores of the latest Mac Pro. This makes FXPX run very fast. Most other programs don't use multiple cores at all and a few only use a couple of cores. With more cores comes slower clock speed, which is needed by programs that dont use multiple cores.
Eventually, all high-end programs will use multiple cores, so, if you have the option, get as many cores as you can with your current purchase. This will especially benefit FCPX immediatly, it will help higher-end programs later, and the slower clock speed won't really affect the more run-of-the-mill programs (like word processing) because clock speeds are pretty reasonable these days (for a laugh, read this in fifty years time).
Get the minimum RAM available because you can upgrade later and will probably have to sacrifice the RAM you have. Third party RAM (again, you can check OWC) is cheaper than buying it with your computer pruchase. Make sure it's designed for your Mac.
You can use Activity Monitor to check if FCPX (or any program) is paging. You don't want this. It means it is writing to disk—effectively virtual memory—that should be handled in RAM. This is very slow and inefficient. It only does that when it needs more RAM than is available. That's when you upgrade your RAM (which could be immediatly after you buy).
The single most effective thing you can do to get FCPX to perform better on an existing computer (or any comuter) is to swap your hard drive for an SSD. SSDs read and write so fast compared to even the fastest hard drive that you can do multicam edits in real time without dropping frames. Rendering is a lot faster becuse it writes the render to disk, and so is launching and exporting (or, as Apple insists, 'Sharing'), which also writes to disk. SSDs may seem expensive (they are coming down in price), but the productivity gains are absolutly worth it.

  • Editing on final cut x

am i able to take a clrp from a project library and use it in another project i have (i wanted to use a multi cam clip i edited on another project)

Yes, just drag-and-drop.  Part two of my article explains Editing Between Libraries a bit.
    http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/final-cut/fcp-x-101-upgrade-guide-to-libraries-pa rt-2
But your clips are stored in an Event, not inside of the Project.  A Project is only a timeline you edit in.  The Event holds all of your media.
So, go to a new proejct, and select that Multiclip from it's Event, and drop it into the new Project.
Warning, if you want two different versions of your Multicam, then right-click your Project in the Libraries pane, and select, Create Project Snapshot.
Or you'll have to duplicate your Mutlicam in the Event, then drop it into a new project.
Otherwise when you change one instance of the Multicam, the other can get changed, also.

  • Final Cut hangs with "Loading Motion Content" when opening library

When opening one of libraries I almost immediately get a beach ball and see "Loading Motion Content" under "Rendering" in the Background Taks window. Final Cut hangs and I am forced to restart. I don't have any version of Motion and this problem just appeared in this library.
Any suggestions? I've used Preference Manager to trash preferences to no avail.

I followed the procedure suggested by Luis Sequeira1 in several other threads and deleted the flexolibrary. I no longer see any "Loading Motion Content" message when opening the library and the it seems to be ok, with all the media, multicam clips, compound clips, and projects as expected.
    I have three questions:
    1) What information does the flexolibrary contain?
    2) How is Final Cut able to recreate a flexolibrary?
    3) Might deleting the flexolibrary be a way to solve all sorts of problems with libraries?

  • Export feature not working in final cut pro x

    Hello,
I'm working on a multicam edit in final cut pro x and wanted to export it to see how it looks, but when i try to share it all of the options for sharing under the share tab are grayed out, i can't seem to export my project and can't export it using CMD+E, neither, does anyone have any idea or maybe i'm doing something wrong?
    Can someone please help?

The project is in the timeline. That's where i'm trying to export from, but all options are grayed out in the shar tab, also i noticed that it's only with this one project, all the others are perfectly fine.

Cross dissolve is the default transition. It's applied with Cmd-T.

I am trying to find out if Final Cut Pro X can handle xvac-s format?

This is one of FCP X's best features - it's unbelievably good for syncing multicam - just remember to give each clip a different Camera Angle Name (do this in the Inspector) and the App sorts the rest out.
