Multicam playback hassle

I'm using the Multicam feature for the first time (which I'm rather excieted about) to edit a music video. I've got 14 angles.
Here's my playback problem: As soon I use more than 6 angles, I see all my different angles in the viewer, I render the clip, when I try play the clip from the timeline, all my angles in the viewer are relplaced by whatever the active angle is. Even though I've set my playhead sync to "Open". My I stop playback I all the angles are see again
So as I said I can get it to work perfectly with up to 6 angles.
I've worked through Ripple Trainings tut "The essentials of Multicam Editing" Which was very helpful.
Thanks

I've used MultiCam for music videos with some 30 odd takes, but at the time I was using an OnlineJPEG codec, so had no RT effects, including multi stream playback. Since then I've used DV multicam for a multicamera shoot, but that only had 3 angles and I got playback from all of them. I'm afraid I can't offer any insight into the realm inbetween...

  • Why can't I see the Multicam Playback option in the TIMELINE RT pop-up menu

Im trying to be able to do realtime editing in Multicam.

I had to go through the manual's setup for multiclip three time (3TIMES!) before i could make everything work, it's quite frustrating the first few times, I agree.
You may need to restart the application to have all of the new settings take effect?
While not necessary, you also might want to select the multiclip keyboard layout option. it places a bunch of cool -- if indecipherably stupid iconic -- buttons in your button bars.

  • Multicam playback plays infinitely

I have CC 2014 and in the older CC, sometimes when you started playback in Multicam mode with the timeline panel selected, it would continue playback and stop responding to any commands and play infinitely until you kill Premiere in task manager. Now it's doing this even with the program monitor selected so MC has become useless. Help?

This is the fourth thread I know of dealing with problems where multicam playback either won't stop at all at least keeps playing for a few seconds after the Stop command. Congregating in a single place will aid our efforts to get a handle on this. Please switch to this thread: Fast playback (multicam) won't stop until end of timeline reached.

  • DVCPRO50 multicam playback: dropped frames

I'm having trouble with multicam group playback (5 cameras) in FCP - Dropped-Frame Error. Individual clips playdown fine, only groups drop-frames.
    Stats:

    OS 10.4.3
    FCP 5.0.3
    G-RAID 1000GB
source footage: DVCPRO50 @ full resolution
Could it be the 5 cameras @ full-rez giving the G-RAID a hard time?

I'd think so. DVCPRO 50 is 8-bit, and the G-Raid handles 3-4 streams of 8-bit, and you are asking it for 5 streams. For this I'd think you'd need a SATA Raid.

  • Multicam playback problems

    Hello -
I'm having a SERIOUS problem playing back my multicam edited project -- I need to make changes asap, and when I play it back, it starts to go 'glitchy', then skips and jumps and stops playing completely! I've got the RT set to 'Unlimited'; 'Dynamic'; and 'Multiclip Playback'. I also emptied my Trash and have 103 GB left (out of 250), and when I just played it last week, it was absolutley running fine, with less space! How on earth can I get to play back 'normal', so I can finish editing this project? Any help would be appreciated - thanks so much!

    Hello --
No, I haven't changed the speed of the clips' playback.
About setting up a new sequence, I have 12 separate sequences, so that means I would have to sync up again, and put back in timeline, starting over - is that what you're saying? This is 1 hr. 20 min. project, I would hate to start it all over again.
Also, before, I had collapsed and uncollapsed and it worked fine, and now with it having to render, someone suggested that my computer might be running low on RAM? Is there a way to check how much is left? Under System Profiler, it says 1 GB of memory and L2 Cache 512 KB.
I will try trashing FCP preferences, thanks!

  • Multicam playback issues

I have digitized a project into FCP at 8 bit instead of DV and seem to be having playback issues with the multicam. My settings are Safe Rt, Dynamic, Quarter playback frame rate, yet I am still dropping frames left and right. Is it possible that I need faster drives? I only got this system two years ago, I can't believe it won't play 8 bit. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Rob

I'm digitizing digibeta tapes and I want it as uncompressed as I can get it so I digitized it at 8 bit uncompressed. I have a 4 bay Internal SATA Array. Each one holds 465 gigabytes and I think it has a 3.0 gigabit throughput if I'm reading the specs correctly. I've done DV multicam without a problem on my system but I was hoping to have a better quality product this time so I digitized at a higher compression rate ( or is it really a lower compression rate . . . ) All the media right now is on one drive. Does that matter? This is kind of where i wish I was working on an Avid . . . .

  • Multicam Playback Resolution

    Hi All,
I cut native AVCHD 1920x1080 60p footage from 3 panasonic HDC-HS700 cameras in the multicam feature of CS5. I have playback resolution in the program and source monitors set to "full" and it plays crystal clear in those windows. In the multi-cam window however it plays grainy. I could not find anywhere to adjust multicam window playback res.
thoughts as to why its playing grainy only in that window, and is there a way to adjust it?
    Thanks in advance :o)

I don't know of any way to adjust it manually.  The multicam window is only for content viewing so you can see which camera to switch to.  It doesn't need to be high res.  But it does need to play in real time.  So PP adjusts to make that happen.

  • Multicam playback a nightmare with angle viewer open. Please help!

I have a brand new, 27" iMac, 8gb ram, 3.4ghz processor, 1gb video card.  Using Final Cut Pro X 1.0.5.  Trying to stitch together only two Canon 60D clips using the multicam feature in FCPX.  When the angle viewer is open, the video on ONE track will drop frames like a seagull dropping digested fish.  It's not even usable. When I hide the angle viewer, plays back fine. This is a workaround, but I want that viewer to be open to make further edits...that's the point.  I even lags when I'm making edits.  How can I solve this...what is the issue??  Please advise!

    a) use proxies
    b) keep events on a fast 2nd drive
.... my set-up has about 20% of your horse-power - and 5, 6 multi clips are no problem.-

  • What is the best Codec in Adobe CC for Multicam Playback and edit?

I have been editing in FCP 7 for years and decided to make the switch (But I didn't want to ruin my old system (which is still good and seems to run better than the new one) so I bought a Mac-Mini as a test to play with CC).  I admit my new CPU is a little weak, but it should run a few tracks of video in a sequence.
I tried switching 5 multi-cam tracks of video on the mac-mini on Apple-Pro Res LT running off a Firewire 800 drive.  I have read that 4 streams is better, but whatever, I don't mind pushing a system.  It didn't work.  Video was to laggy and impossible to switch with.
My old system could edit about 5 pro-res LT video tracks simultaneously with decent results.  Not great, but decent or good enough to see what the heck was happening.  Though, the footage was on an internal drive.
My question is...  Is there a power-user low cpu intensity codec that i should use for multi-cam mode?  I am tempted to just switch in SD and Reconnect, but it would be a great thing if there was a codec that could be default for transcoding...

  • Settings for Mixed Format Multicam Sequence?

My new Quad-core computer easily edits AVCHD and HDV projects. But I'm having all kinds of jerky playback problems when trying to edit a multicam sequence using both kinds of footage. What sequence settings should I use in setting up this hybrid sequence? I've tried both AVCHD and HDV settings and had the same problems.

Not sure you can get around this one. You may have to convert one format to the other for smoother multicam playback. (Purely speculation on my part.)

  • Resolution loss in multicam when GPU acceleration enabled

    Hello all,
Strange multicam problem here. I know others besides me have struggled with multicam playback resolution, but at least on the surface, this particular problem seems counter-intuitive.
When I enable GPU acceleration (I have a GTX 650 Ti BOOST), playback resolution is decreased in the multi-cam monitor. With CS5.5, this was extremely noticeable; now in CC, it's less apparent, but still detectable. The footage will blur slightly when playback begins, and then sharpen again when paused. If I disable GPU acceleration, playback resolution in the multicam-monitor is the same as the paused resolution.
Is this a bug, or something that should be expected? I can live with this, but it'd be nice not to have to disable GPU acceleration for multi-cam, and then re-enable it for other tasks.
    Thanks in advance.

Update: At least in some cases, I can see that the paused image is sharper with GPU acceleration enabled than the paused image without it. So the playback resolutions may well be the same with or without GPU, and all I'm seeing is a greater difference between playback and paused during GPU acceleration. Also, there may in fact be a drop during playback resolution in software only mode, albeit less noticeable.
(As mentioned though, this was certainly an issue I experienced in 5.5; don't know if anyone else has experienced something similar.)
My new question would be, is it possible with the right hardware to guarantee full resolution playback in multi-cam? I'm currently editing 4 cameras: 2 5DMIIIs, a GH2, and a Sony NX5U. Editing system is comprised of an i7 4770K overclocked to 4.2GHz, 16GB RAM, GTX 650 Ti Boost, and three HDDs: an SSD for OS and Programs, a 7200 for media and projects, and another 7200 for pagefile, previews, and media cache. Would creating a RAID 0 for the media files help at all in this case? Or is the drop in resolution I experience something I likely won't be able to change?

  • Blackmagic mini monitor/Premiere CC Multicam

    Hi,
I am using premiere CC with a multicam project. I've used premiere before on smaller projects and tried the new CC with a bigger project. Nine Cameras all ex3. loved the fact that I didnt have to transcode but now I am regretting it.
So I am using a blackmagic mini monitor which is fine in composite mode. But when I switch to multicamera mode the monitor freaks out and loses sync/picture and if I switch back to the composite mode it finds itself again. to tell you the truth I found cs6 far more stable than CC. Why can't I get multicam playback on the black magic card? tested the same situation in Final Cut and it was fine so its not the card. Is there something I need to click/turn on or off or something to get playback?
It also freaks out and if i double click the multicam sequence to see the sequence in the source monitor.

I haven't seen or heard yet of this issue. I can output from the Multi-Camera monitor without issue from my Decklink HD Extreme 3D and Decklink 4K. I'll try to test on my UltraStudio 3D as well.
When you say the 'monitor freaks out' what does it do exactly?
Can you provide your system specs and also your monitor model number. Lastly can you include your frame rate and resolution of your media.
    Thanks!

  • Multicam making un-intended cuts

    Hi.
I'm a FCP editor switching to CS5.  I use a lot of multicam in FC, and am trying to get my head around it in premiere.
I'm editing a two camera multicam.  I start on camera 1, I hit record, then hit play.  As I play I'll cut to camera 2, then back to camera 1, then camera 2. If it stop playback whilst on camera 2, Premiere makes another final cut back to camera 1.  If I stop playback on camera 1, then it does not make this cut.
I didn't want to cut back to camera 1, which is why when I stopped playback, I was one camera 2.  Is this me not understanding how multicam works, or is it a feature or bug?
    Cheers
    Jacob.

This "Quirk" sucks.  No software should place an edit when the playback stops - this is beyond rediculous behavior. I have spent the last half hour trying to understand why I couldn't get an edit rhythm going, and it's because of two things, actually - one is that on my Mac, the J-K-L buttons do not always behave well when playing back in multicam mode (specifically the "K" button does not always pause playback - it seems to randomly not work), and when I do stop using the spacebar as opposed to the "K" key, the stopped playback adds an edit where I do not want one!
I understand this playback (reverting to the cam selected before editing playback started) behavior from the explanation above - but that does not mean that the behavior is correct from an editing standpoint - this is a huge problem for me editing in multicam mode. If I have to stop and fix the edit that Premiere puts in every time I stop multicam playback it's a HUGE waste of my time. There should be a way around this. Adobe needs to address this by giving editors a choice between the way it currently behaves and the way that most every editor on the planet expects it to behave - by retaining the last camera selected when playback is stopped.  At the very least this should be a choice.
Overall I am still very underwhelmed by Adobe's multicam implementation. On a Mac it seems very buggy, sluggish at times, prone to problems and I have never been able to have a good edit experience using it yet, and I've been trying for months after defecting from Final Cut to Premiere, first 5.5 and now 6. I have a dual-processor 8-core Mac tower, upgraded RAM to 20GB, bought the Quadro 4000 for Mac card @ almost $1k, and am using blazing fast drives in a RAID 0 array that all together should all provide smooth sailing. Regrettably, using multicam in Premiere on my Mac has NEVER been smooth, and was really unusable prior to CS6.  For all the chest-beating from Adobe about FCP users being able to switch seamlessly to Premiere, the fact is that Adobe Premiere has always been more solid on the PC, and I have tried very hard to make Premiere behave as smoothly as FCP7 when it comes to multicam editing on my Mac (which FCP7 does very well), to no avail, using every recommendation and recommended piece of hardware and software available.
Adobe, please show me the way. I'm trying to be a believer, but I'm having a very difficult time getting through a multicam edit and it's just a very frustrating experience.

  • Multi-cam project crashing in FCP

    Hi,
I'm cutting a multi-cam project and the system I'm cutting on keeps crashing - and it appears to be crashing just after the auto save.
The project is a five camera shoot, all on XDCam EX3 35mbs 1080 / 25p (ingested into FCP, native clips are then combined into a multiclip & put into an HD Pro Res timeline - the Apple Pre-set: Apple ProRes 422(HQ) 1920x1080 50i version).
The system I'm working on is an 8 Core (2x2.8ghz quad core intel) with 16gb RAMM, OSX 10.5.8 (this isn't my own system)
The actual FCP project is still pretty small (currently only 24mb), although this will be increasing (I'm cutting 10x1 hour shows).
The system appears to hang up just after doing an autosave (I say this because the time stamps on the most recent autosave are usually within a minute or two of the crash). I get the spinning ball of death, and then the system crashes (although not always, it tends to crash about 40% of the time when the spinning ball of death appears).
I'm running the system fairly minimally: I've reduced the number of audio tracks playing in real time to 2, and the audio playback quality to Low (it's stand up comedy). I am running with the waveform showing on one audio track (I've crushed the other tracks so it's not showing - although I don't know if this means the audio waveform isn't being calculated for those tracks). I've only got one track of audio actually playing.
I've reduced the playback quality & frame rate to dynamic, but I am running 5 streams of EX3 35mbs vision through the multicam playback window, in a pro res sequence (1920x180).
I've already deleted the FCP preferences & zapped the P-RAMM a couple of times.
Any ideas on how I can reduce the crashes?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Shane & Tony,
I'll try that, fortunately we've only shot & ingested the first few shows, so we can still fit the transcoding process into our workflow. (I had heard this suggested prior to starting the edit, but wanted to avoid it if possible because of the extra work involved).
BTW, my method for transcoding the media to Pro Res for the two sequences that I've already edited, would be to identify the transcoded EX3 QT files that have been ingested (at desktop level), take these QT files into compressor, apply & run the standard apple Pro Res template, and then re-link the clips in FCP to the new transcoded media files (which would have identical names, but be the transcoded Pro Res Version). Then re-link the sequence.
Obviously, for the shows that I haven't cut yet, I'd just ingest, & then transcode the media, & re-import the transcoded Pro Res media ready for editing.
Do you have a better way of transcoding the EX3 files to re-link to the edited sequence?
    Thanks!
    Andrew
