Multicast on Aironet Devices

Hi,
We have an application that is used between teachers and students and requires the use of multicast.
How do you enable the aironet devices to pass on the multicast messages over the radio interface.
Regards
Miron

Hi Miron,
Have a look at this info,it looks like you need to set at least one of the radio speed settings to basic to pass multicast traffic;
2.4-GHz Radio (dot11radio0)
speed
{ [1.0] [2.0] [5.5] [11.0 ]
[basic-1.0] [basic-2.0] [basic-5.5] [basic-11.0] |
range |
throughput }
(Optional) Sets the access point to allow packets to use the non-basic settings. The access point transmits only unicast packets at these rates; multicast packets are sent at one of the data rates set to a basic setting.
Note At least one of the access point's data rates must be set to a basic setting.
For the 2.4-GHz radio:
[ basic-1.0 ] [ basic-2.0 ]
[ basic-5.5 ] [ basic-11.0 ]
(Optional) Sets the access point to require the use of the specified data rates for all packets, both unicast and multicast. At least one of the access point's data rates must be set to a basic setting.
Note The client must support the basic rate you select or it cannot associate with the access point.

  • Multicast for Aironet 1310 WGB and 1242 AP

I have configured a Aironet 1310 bridge as a WGB and is connected to a Aironet 1242AG AP wirelessly!
A sensor(IP device) is wired into the 1310WGB. The sensor needs MULTICAST to operate!
I checked the DETAILED STATUS of the RADIO and both the 1310 and 1242 are blocking multicast!
The RELIABLE MULTICAST TO WGB option is enabled on the 1242AP already! No luck as yet!
    Any thoughts??

  • WLSE doesn't seem to notice it when an Aironet device goes down

    WLSE type: 1105, version 2.7
    Aironet 1100 devices (267 pieces), IOS 12.2(13)JA4
After the upgrade from version 2.6 to 2.7 we have a problem with the WLSE. Device discoveries and inventories run without a problem, but whenever a device goes down the WLSE doesn't seem to notice.
With a sniffer we found the WLSE's polling the device, but there's no follow-up when there's no reply. As a result the device stays green.
All configurations are the same with the exeption of one location. Here we've configured the WDS and this is the only location on which the WLSE reacts in the correct way.
On several other locations there might be one or two devices on which the WLSE reacts correctly, but these are exeptions. We have compared configuration files, but can't find any differences between the devices.
Whenever the WLSE does discover a failing device (with no WDS configured) it generates a P1 severity fault (default was P2).
In case these devices have become reachable again the P1 severity fault is automatically acknowledged and remains this way. So far I haven't been able to clear these faults and therefor the device will keep it's alert status in the reportview.
I do hope somebody has some idea about what's going on.
After I encountered these problems after the upgrade I've started from scratch and used a clean installation of version 2.7. and a new discovery of our network.
I really don't know what went wrong. Anybody with any suggestions is very welcome to vent them.
    Thanks for your help,
    Corine

I'm having a similar issue. 500+ AP1200 units, IOS 15JA, newest WLSE version. Most of the time when a unit goes down, it will generate a SNMP unreachable fault message, and we are set to have the WLSE send an email in the event of a SNMP unreachable. That's great. Except once in awhile, it won't generate the fault. The device could be powered completely down for three or four days, and I'd never get a fault message. It's driving me nuts. All these AP's are configured the same using the exact same template, with only the IP info changed.

  • Wireless Distribution System on Aironet Devices

    Hi All
Is it possiblie to run an aironet 1300 device participating on a wireless distribution system ?
It's configured as autonomous AP. I have 3 other Ap's from linksys running a wds and want this cisco one to join them.

    Hi,
Yes 1300 can be configured as WDS.
Here is the config example section from the 1300 ap where you can find an example of WDS configuration:

  • Video UDP Multicast over Aironet problems

I am currently able to transmit several 3Mb/s video feeds over cat5 ethernet and receive them. But when i try to send the data over aironet access points the video data is incomplete or corrupted during transit resulting in damaged pixels at the viewer end.
is it even possible to send multicast video data over wireless?
i have been told that there are firmware updates available on other manufacturers AP's, i still need to substantiate this.
I am looking for some help with regard to multicast video over aironet AP's.
thanks in advance for anyones help.

Aironet access-points are simply layer-2 bridges/repeaters. they support "multicast" just as an ethernet hub does.
Multicast and wireless are not always friends. With multicast and wireless we send out all multicast traffic and the minimum bandwidth that all clients are associated at. For example if one user is connected at 1mpbs and all other users are connected at 11mbps then all multicast is sent at 1mbps. Now lets say that you are only sending data at 11mbps, and you are sending three MPEG 1 video streams at 1.5mbps, that would give to a total bandwidth of 4.5mbps then this will not work. If they are using small cast and not multicast and you have 1 video stream at 1.5mbps being set to three sites, the total bandwidth would be 4.5mbps again it would not work. If you only have 1 video stream set up as multicast and you set QOS on the video via priority filters this might just work. Bandwidth, QOS, connection speed, type of connections (bridge or workgroup bridges), small cast or multicast, this all matters.

  • Multicast rate setting

Has anyone done any experimentation to analytically try and determine how to best set the multicast rate on devices on a network?  I'm thinking that since the airport utility will display the signal, noise, and rate information it would be simple to graph what the average rate readings were when the only variable in the experiment was a change to the multicast rate setting.
I'm thinking that you'd arrive at some kind of idea of what to set the multicast rate setting to, based on the signal to noise ratio and throughput.
For example if the highest rate obtained between two devices with the same relative signal to noise ratio was 400 with a particular multicast rate setting on the base unit (connected to the internet) that would be the setting to use. If you experimented by changing just the multicast rate and nothing else, and the rate dropped to 300 for the same relative signal to noise ratio, then that would indicate where to set the multicast rate to.
    I hope I'm making sense.
I've recently re-configured my network when I picked up a new 5th generation Airport Extreme and without doing anything my 5Ghz channel connection rate increased by 50%. That's between a 4th and 5th generation Airport Extreme. the rate went from 300 to 450 just by changing the one base station.
I know the 5th generation unit has improved antennas and higher signal output.
What's interesting is that from the 5th generation (base unit connected to the internet) to a 4th generation unit and 3rd generation unit that display identical signal and noise readings to the base unit. The 4th generation device is consistently and constantly higher in terms or xmission rate (450) while the 3rd generation device tops out at (270). The 3rd generation unit is on the same floor as the base unit and much closer than the 4th generation unit. This resulted in the equal signal and noise levels received at the base.  You would think that the closer unit  (which actually has a 1 db higher received signal at the base unit) would show an equal data rate.
So I'm wondering if Apple did more than just increase the signal level in the new units. Does anyone know what the maximum possible rate readings could be for each generation of extreme base station?
Well, hopefully this pretty technical dive into observed differences between units stimulates some conversation.  I only wish I still had access to an RF anechoic chamber and shielded rooms so I could do some real testing.

    Tesserax,
I completely understand how multicast works and it's effect on throughput performance. What I was wondering was, if anyone had done any studies or testing to determine that, for example: a multicast rate setting of 10Mbps requires the received signal to be at least 20db above the noise floor and no more than 3 clients connected at the same time.
My reason for being interested in this is that I've divided my home into an upstairs / downstairs network where the upstairs network is linked to the bottom one (which contains the internet access) via a wireless bridge. (running a 'hardline' ethernet connection is not feasible for me at this point) each network has a couple of base stations tied (hardline) to computers and media centers that require high throughput rates (for internet connections and media streaming)
The upstairs/downstairs bridge and these high throughput base stations have been isolated to be on the 5GHz band only. Since there are only 4 of these devices on this isolated network, I'm experimenting with doing everything I can to maximize the throughput over the 5GHz network.  The 2.4GHz network (aren't simultaneous routers great!) is serviced by airport express units on both floors and handles all of the 'mobile' and 'lower' speed network needs such as iPads, iPhones, AirPlay (audio). The have lower multicast settings so that they can handle people carrying their iPads and iPhones around while providing great wifi coverage.
I was hoping that someone knew of someplace that a study might have been done that I could read. Maybe I'll have to do it myself over some holiday weekend and post the results.  Since playing with the mulicast rate will affect the ability of devices to connect to each other, I think it should only be used as a 'throughput controller' when you're in a situation like I have where you have a 'backbone' network between fixed points that does not have to support clients coming in and out.
Do you happen to know what the full bandwidth potential is for the 5 and 2.4 GHz bands between 2 devices?

  • Giving IP address and DCHP to aironet 1250

    hi,
We need to give an ip address to 1250 just for the managemnt purpose ( similar to VLAN1 ip address given in case of L2 switches ). And then Aironet1250's gigbit ethernet will be connected to our Core L3 4507 swicth which has DHCP running. And will distribute the IP address to wireless clients. In this case how to configure an ip address and also have DHCP running. Management IP adress is not in the range of the DHCP pool. so in case any configuration is required on Aironet device we will connect a notebook with a same subnet ip address as that of Aiornet device , and then telnet / ssh to management IP of aironet devive.
    Any experience pls share.
Any configuration link on cisco.com is appreciated.

I guess that the disributed function has been included in the standard mulitcast routing command because the key word is no longer needed. Or perhaps this platform does not support this at all.#
Once again , thank you for your help above.

  • Breaking 100Mbps on Multicast with WDS

I'm building WDS (with MDT) servers that will be replacing legacy Symantec Ghost imaging environments.
I really like the "Auto-cast" concept of a revolving multicast. That could really be game-changing.
However, all my servers refuse to go past the 100Mbps seemingly artificial limit. This has been seen on various HP, Dell, and VMWare servers running Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2.
For the most part, the transmission stays pegged at 99.9-100Mbps, occasionally suffering a drop to lower speeds, and then jumping back up.
A Ghostcast on the other hand will jump from 30Mb to 300Mb wildly.
The network is full Gig, all gig ports, and all switches with IGMP(v3) support and snooping set up.
What can I do to unlock full Gig multicast speeds? Even a jump from 100Mb to 500Mb will be a huge jump.
I am multicasting to SSD devices and modern machines- I do not believe that disk I/O on the target device is a problem. Server I/O is on a RAID 5 or greater.
    Thanks for any help...!

    Hi,
Notice: Content referred modifying registry, please backup before any operation.
The setting is also available via registry setting. In order to make sure the settings are applied, we ca have atry.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSMC
Change the value of "DefaultProfile" to the desired setting (10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps, or Custom).
If using Custom, make sure to make the necessary customizations under the registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSMC\Profiles\Custom
Do not make any customizations to any of the built in profiles (10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps). Use the Custom profile if any customizations
    are desired.
    Hope this helps.

  • UDP file multicast

    Hello everybody...
I'm working on a project in LabVIEW right
now. The main idea is to send (large) files, of any sort, with a UDP
multicast to multiple devices. I thought the main idea was quite simple
but I can't seem to get it right.
The main idea I tried to
manage is to convert a file to a large string and to send that string
in small pieces to the receivers over a multicast address. Apparently I
don't seem to manage this at all... Does anyone know how I should read
in a file (could be anything, from .iso to .jpg, .zip,...) and prepare
    it for the UDP multicast?
Once I can manage this, I'm going to start worrying about the loss of packets because of UDP...
    It
would be great to get thru this because it would reduce the load of traffic
when many computers need the same large file from a server.
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards.

    tst wrote:
II would advise using TCP if possible. If the problem is that you don't know which devices will be available, you can use UDP in a separate loop to detect other devices in the network. Once a device is detected, it should open a connection to the server and start the file transfer.
If you still want to use your idea, you will need to manage the data transfer and the file writing in each client. Then, if a client misses a packet (e.g. it was lost, the client connected after the transfer started, etc.), it will need to request it from the server.
As for how to actually do it, as Andre mentioned, you can use the file functions to read and write binary files (represented as strings, since that's what you'll use in the UDP functions). Note that in each of the client, you should probably initialize the file to its final size using null chars and then go over it and fill it as the data comes in.
P.S. I'm not a network expert by far, but I'm not sure this will actually reduce the traffic, as a UDP multicast might put more strain on the network than a directed TCP connection.
I've tried to make a VI that reads in any sort of file (binary) and
convert it to a string (that I will use for UDP transport later on).
But offcourse at the receiver I need to make a new file with this
    received string.
I can't seem to make this new file. As
attachment you'll find a test VI that converts a file to a string, and
tries to write that string back into another file on the same computer.
For some reason (maybe the null values) the new file is corrupt (I've
tried it with .jpg, .docx,...). Maybe I did something completely wrong,
but I'm not into file manipulation with LV (yet).
    Thanks in advance!

  • WLC 2500 multicast

    Hi,
I have WLC 2500 with firmware 7.4.121.0. Problem is with multicasting (or media streaming). One big boss wants his camera communicate with tablet, ant this communication requires multicast.
In MONITOR-> Multicast I can devices trying to communicate but nothing happens. I found some guides how to configure multicast for video or voice, but I have no luck with them.
Perhaps someone had luck with such configuration?
    Thanks.

    Hi
See whether below helps (these are with wlc 7.0 code, but I think not much differences in 7.4 compare to 7.0). Refer specific configuration guide for exact syntax

  • Officejet Pro 8600 - Macbook Pro and Macbook Air will not print

    Products:
    HP Officejet Pro 8600
Macbook Pro (Mac OS X, Version 10.7.5)
Macbook Air (OS X, Version 10.8.2)
    Question:
Why did my Macs initially print fine, but now will not print at all?
    Full Story:
I have a wireless network at my house that consisted of a 30mb cable internet, Netgear 900n, HP Officejet Pro 8600, 2 Dell Laptops with Windows 7, a Lenovo Laptop with Windows 7, and Dell Tower with Windows 7 - All printed just fine.
The HP Officejet 8600 was added to my network about 2 months ago.
I added a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air about 3 weeks ago.  Both Macs printed just fine for about a week.  Then suddenly they stopped.  I spent about 2 hours on the phone with HP Service, and they finally said it must be my router.  So I called Netgear.  Netgear was useless!  They wanted me to agree to charges for services before they would even discuss the issue.
Due to information provided by HP's service support, and because Netgear will not support their product, I promptly purchased a new router - an Apple Airport Extreme.
The Macs recognize the printer, will print if hardwired via a USB cable, but will not print wirelessly to the Officejet Pro 8600.  The PCs print fine.
The frustration that is being felt is compound by the fact that the Macs printed just fine with the Officejet Pro 8600 2 weeks ago, and now the printer just shows "idle"... even with a new router. (see image below)
Please help, I appreciate any support.
As a side note, the HP Service rep was very friendly, and definitely tried to support the HP Product, which is much more than I can say about Netgear.
    Thank you,
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
More likely the issue related with Multicast, which Apple devices relies on to communicate with teh device through the network.
First try unplugging the router for 30 seconds.
Plug it back to the power and wait for 2-3 minutes.
Turn the HP printer Off and back On, then check for any difference.
If the same persists, try changing your router configuration as following
Note: the settings below are not related with the HP product, I provide you the steps as a best effor and those are only based on my own knowledge. you may try modifying the router settings at your own risk:
Open the router configuration page (can be found listed as the Default Gateway by clicking the Wireless icon on the printer, then print a network configuration report.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Setup option from the menu, then click on WAN Setup.
Make sure to uncheck the box next to Disable IGMP Proxying and Apply the changes.
