Multicast performance and Unicast performance on same switch

Hi ,
I have a question about multicast performance.
As I know, the switch performance are depends on switch fabric bandwidth and packet forward efficiency..
For example.
In our case is CAT4506-E with SUP7-E.
The switch fabric per slot is 48G and total PPS for IPv4 is 250mpps.
Is this for Uni cast and multicast?
The only difference between them is routing table entries?

Hi there,
a colleague of mine raised some doubts on installing Oracle database 11.2 on the same host server where multiple Virtual Box guest instances are running.
He pointed that threads allocation and consequently performance could be unbalanced.
Database server is not for production but it must supply its services for about 20 enterprise applications, so I do not expect to serve thousands of requests but definitely complex queries.
Considering these points, does it make sense what he's said?
Where can I find more information about Oracle DB 11.2 threads allocation?
thanks in advance
The host server is a DELL with two sockets Intel® Xeon® E5520, 2.26Ghz, 8M Cache, 5.86 GT/s QPI, Turbo, HT, 1066MHz Max Memory
RAM
RAM 24GB Memory for 2 CPUs, DDR3, 1333MHz
(12x2GB Dual Ranked UDIMMs)
OS RedHat 5.3If I understand what you are saying, then as far as the OS is concerned, the oracle rdbms is just another application alongside a virtual machine (or several virtual machines) process. I can't see where there should be any inherent conflict between them, except of course all processes running on any computer are competing for finite hardware resources. Typically you'd want the database server to be dedicated to running the database.

  • Problem with FWSM and L3 interface in same switch

    I have two 6513s with an 802.1q trunk connecting them. Each switch has redundant Sup720s running in Native mode, IOS ver 12.2(18)SXF (they were initially running SXD3). A FWSM (ver 2.3(3), routed mode, single context) is in each switch, setup in failover mode.
    I can not get a PC, in a vlan that has the layer 3 interface defined on the switch with the active FWSM in it, to communicate with devices "behind" the FWSM. If I move the layer 3 configuration for that vlan to the other 6513, everything works fine.
    The MSFCs are on the inside of the firewall, they have a layer 3 interface configured in the same vlan as the FWSM "inside" interface. Several "same security level" interfaces are defined on the FWSM and used to protect server farms. I am using OSPF on the MSFCs and FWSM and the routing table is correct.
    The FWSM builds connections for attempts made by the PC with the layer 3 interface defined on the same switch as the active FWSM just fine, so this is not a FWSM ACL problem.
    A ping of the FWSM "inside" interface from a PC with the layer 3 interface defined on the same switch as the active FWSM fails, even though debug icmp trace on the FWSM shows the request and the response. A packet capture, using the NAM-2, shows only the request packets. I have captured on the common vlan and the FWSM backplane port channel interface.
    Just to add to the confusion, if I capture in the same places, but do the ping from a PC that is in a vlan with the layer 3 interface defined in the 6513 that does not contain the active FWSM, which works fine, I see the request and reply on the common vlan capture, but only the request on the port channel capture.
    This problem has been there from the beginning of this implementation and has not changed with IOS and FWSM software upgrades. I have experienced this with any and all vlans that I tried to define the layer 3 interface for on the switch with the active FWSM. I have MLS turned on.
    If anyone else has experienced this and solved it, or knows what is going on, I would appreciate any insight.
    Thanks.
    Keith

    I will have to get setup to record more data, but I do know the FWSM showed a ping request and a ping reply at the "inside" interface.
    I believe my problem is related to the IOS command "firewall multiple-vlan-interfaces" which I put in place to allow IPX traffic to be brought around the FWSM. The little documentation that there is for this command, states that policy routing may need to be implemented to prevent ip packets from going around the firewall. I do not have any policy routing in place.
    I also do not have any active layer three interfaces defined for any of the vlans assigned to the firewall except the "inside" interface. So my resoning was that I did not need to be concerned about ip packets having a way around the FWSM. My suspicion is that this command and the fact that I have mls on is causing some type of a problem which results in the packet being "lost" when it needs to be going through the MSFC in the switch with the active FWSM to get to the PC. Hopefully that makes some sense.
    Do you have any idea where better documention on using the "firewall multiple-vlan-interfaces" may be, or a better explanation of all that is happening inside the switch when that command is used?
    Thanks.

  • EAP-PEAP and EAP-TLS on same switched network

    Hello,
    I'd like to enable both EAP-PEAP and EAP-TLS on the same network to support 802.1x authentication. The reasons are because of historical things i.e. 'older' devices use PEAP and newer devices  use TLS. Over time all will be using TLS, but for now both will the there.
    The AAA server is a Cisco ASC (4.2 or 5.1 - don't know yet)
    I've not tested this or so, but I don't think this will be an issue....because from a switch point of view, it is just passing EAP traffic to teh Radius and so the required services need to be made available on the Radius server...is that a correct assumption?
    Thanks,
    Guy

    You are right Guy, the switch just as act as an termediary device. It just passes EAPOL packet between the ACS server and client, and waits till the ACS server authenticate the client(internal DB, or external DB= AD, LDAP). You just need to enable EAP/TLS, MS-CHAP and MS-CHAPv2 for PEAP in the ACS server. Last make sure that your certificates at both side are valid and sign by the CA.
    Good Luck,

  • Span port and Unicast packets

    There is a problem with a PIX sending syslogs to a device that is plugged into the same switch as the PIX. From any other switch, in the span port the packets are seen going from the pix's ip port (514) to the device's ip port (514). Why do I see unicast packets propagating through all the switches when both devices are in the same switch? Do I need to hard code the MAC's into the switch? The problem doesn't occur all the time.

    When a switch receives a unicast packet with a destination address that it has not learned, the default is to flood it to all ports. You can disable flooding in this case on a per-port basis.So, I think in your switches, the default setting of flooding is enabled, VLANs are configured, and also VTP(trunking) is enabled so that even though the source and destination are on same switch, because of same VLANs, trunking and flooding enabled,the packet propagates through all switches.

    whether i use a DL DVD or just a DVD R, it tells me there was an error during multiplexing.  I have tried changing every setting, best performance, professional quality, etc. and still get the same error message every time i try to burn to dvd.

    Welcome to the forums.
    Looks like that error message does refer to encoding (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1645) but a problem could be that your video has to be reloaded into iDVD if you started the encoding process and then switched settings.  You could start a new iDVD project, or try deleting encoded assets.
    Let's start from the beginning -- what length of video are you trying to fit on the DVD? (this will indicate what encoding options you have).  Double layer DVDs can be finicky and are used for video more than 2 hrs long.
    Use good quality media -- Verbatim is often recommended around here, and I've used Sony DVD-R with good results.

  • I have to send messages through UDP multicast and unicast from same port. In Labview I tried that it throws error. I heard it is possible by means of Datagram (UDP unicast and multicast) Port Sharing. How can it be achieved in Labview?

    I have to send UDP multicast and Unicast messages to a remote port from a single source/local port. I tried by opening UDP unicast and multicast in the same port and got the expected error. I tried by opening a unicast connection and sending unicast messages.After that when multicast messages has to send I closed unicast and opened multicast in the same port.This is not throwing any error. But my requirenment is to comminicate with another application in C ++ which recieves this data, throwing an error of lost connectivity and both the applications are not abled to communicate properly.
    In the other application with C++ this is implemented using port sharing. So how port sharing can be implemented in labview so that I can send both multicast and unicast messages from the same port?
    Thanks in advance

    UDP is a sessionless protocol, meaning that anyone listening on the specified port CAN receive the data. CAN because as you noted there is no guarantee in the protocol that it will be received. And if you send the data not to a specific address but a multicast address not only one computer can receive it but in fact every computer on the same subnet listening to that multicast address and depending on the TTL of the packet also computers in neighbouring subnets, although that last one is not a very reliable operation since routers can be configured to drop multicast packages anyhow despite of a different TTL saying otherwise.
    Accordingly there is no real way to make sure that a receiving UDP port is not already in use, since you don't build up a connection. UDP is more or less analogous to shouting your messages through a megaphone, and anyone listening on the right frequency (port) can hear it. You do bind the sender socket to a specific port number but that makes little difference.

  • Multicast Performance

    My test client is an HP dc7600 CMT w/ 1GB memory. Here's are the times
    I'm seeing for unicast/multicast of a 2GB image:
    Ghost: 4 mins / 4 mins
    ZEN: 8 mins / 68 mins
    Ghost is running on PC hardware. ZEN is running on an HP dl360 G5. I'm
    using the Feb 2010 driver update for PXE but haven't applied any hot
    patches to the server yet, so ZEN is still at SP1IR4a.
    Network folk are looking at the switches for me. After that, I'll look
    at patching ZEN to HP3/retesting.

    So, lots of buffer failures on the client switch port. We backed the
    server (switch port and eth0) down to 100 full - no more buffer failures
    and multicast performance is now comparable to unicast (tho still twice
    the time as Ghost). This is fine for the short term but our network folk
    are digging in to gain some understanding...

  • Performance of stacked switch

    I'm installing a stack of 3x 3750G switches, which are inter-connected w/ StackWise cables.
    Are stacked switches truely act as one switch w/o any performance penalty if a packet has to traverse from one switch to another in the same stack?
    Would it be better to arrange the ports together on the same switch if I know they'll mostly generate local traffice among themselves?
    Another question I have is sould I try to distribute ports among the stacked switches as much as possible or is the stack really functioning as a unified stack??
    For instance, I've got 3x 24-port 3750G's; thus a total of 72 ports. If I currently have only 24 objects (clients or switches), should I plug 8 in each switch or it doesn't make a difference if I plug all 24 objects into the same switch?

    A customer asked me this exact question the other day....
    The stack has an interconnect speed of 32G. Thus a packet coming in from 1/0/1 going to 3/0/1 will hit the backplane on switch 1 (speed so high you can forget about it for all intents and purposes) traverse the 32G interconnect bus, across the backplane on switch 3 to the egress port. You can consider this almost identical to the 6500 series when using the "classic" series line cards (61xx series) which likewise share a 32G backplane bus.
    I have tested this with IXIA gigabit traffic generators which blasted 20 Gig of traffic with 50000 flows across the switch stack. The boxes were solid as a rock. 20Gig is rather a lot of traffic.... !!!
    The only occassion when you might have a problem with this architecture is if you have multi gigabit traffic crossing the switch stack that requires QOS priority on an already heavily utilised stack. In that case you could possibly get contention for the stacking bus (unless there is a way of prioritising the traffic gaining access to the stacking bus???? There hasn't been in the past). Cisco's answer to that would be twofold.
    1.If you required such traffic patterns with such heavy traffic and QOS requirements then you should be using a 6500 series switch with high end interface blades.
    2.That the 3750 supports ingress QOS to precisely address the problem of overloading the switch fabric.

    Hello,
    We are facing an issue related with POs in BBPCF02. Example: Two different users (A - Finances and B-HR) under same organization and department (access to same cost center) have access to perform POs confirmation that the requester and receiver is the A. This means that B from HR can conform goods receivable for POs created to purchase goods (office supplies) to finances. They have the same cost center. Even changing the filter "supplied to user" or "requested by user".
    Shouldn't the BBPCF02 only allow to perform goods receivable to the requester? This created an issue to our organization, users within same CC/department have access to confirm goods, POs created directly without shopping carts or with.
    Role assigned to users is with BBP_PD_CNF:
    01, 02, 03, 06                                                      ACTVT
    Do you have any idea effectively how it should work? Is not suppose in standard that when using this transaction only purchase orders that are only relevant for that user is returned in the search list.

    Hello,
    When the PO as no shopping cart assigned and the users from different areas have access to the same cost center all them see the POs. The filter "requested by the user" only works when SC is assigned to the PO.
    Standard behavior.
    Best regards.

  • What was the exact functionality of "Device Control/Status.vi" (version 5)? Is there any vi in Labview 6.1 which performs the same tasks?

    I have a vi developed in LabVIEW 5.1 and I want to upgrade it to LabVIEW 6.1. So I must replace "Device Control/Status.vi" with a newer one but I do not know wich vi performs the same tasks in v6.1

    The Device Control/Status.vi is included with LabVIEW 6.1 as part of the serial compatibility VIs. You can find it by opening up and looking at
    Instrument I/O -> I/O Compatibility -> Serial Compatibility -> Bytes At Serial Port.vi
    Also, if you open up the VI found in
    vi.lib/platform/_sersup.llb/serial line ctrl.vi
    it will expose the functionality of Device Control/Status

  • Why all JMenuItem's of JPopupMenu perform the same action?

    Why all JMenuItem's of JPopupMenu perform the same action?
    I trying to do something similar to what there is in JBuilder where you right click a method or a class - you get a popUpMenu and if you choose the
    "Browse Symbol" JBuilder browses to that method/class.
    I'm trying to do the same and to browse to some class of mine (not a java class). But there's a problem.
    This is my code : -
    OMClass desiredClass = event.getNavigationClass();
    if(desiredClass instanceof OMComplexClass) {
    Set classSet = desiredClass.getSimpleClasses();
    JPopupMenu menu = new JPopupMenu();
    JMenuItem menuItem = null;
    menu.add("Browse to :");
    menu.addSeparator();
    Iterator it = classSet.iterator();
    for(; it.hasNext(); ) {
    OMConcept concept = (OMConcept)it.next();
    menuItem = new JMenuItem(concept.getName());
    menuItem.addActionListener(new NavigateToComplexClass(concept));
    menu.add(menuItem);
    menu.show((JComponent)(event.getMouseEvent().getSource()), getX(), event.getMouseEvent().getY());
    ComplexClass is build of SimpleClasses - so if I want to browse to complex class I ask the user by a JPopupMenu what specific SimpleClass he would like to browse to. My ActionListener is a NavigateToComplexClass class - and hewe is the code : -
    public class NavigateToComplexClass implements ActionListener, ItemListener {
    private static OMClass classToShow = null;
    GUI_Location currentLocation = null;
    public NavigateToComplexClass(OMConcept desiredClass) {
    classToShow = (OMClass)desiredClass;
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt) {
    currentLocation = frame.fillGUI_Location();
    frame.getProject().getHistoryManager().updateHistory(currentLocation);
    if(classToShow == null) {
    return;
    frame.getClassDisplay().getTabbedPane().setSelectedIndex(1);// 1 - parameeter : Property tab.
    frame.getConceptViewPanel().selectConcept((OMConcept)classToShow);
    public void itemStateChanged(ItemEvent e) {
    The problem is that no matter what JMenuItem I select and press it's navigating to the same simpleClass like if I have a
    b
    c
    no matter what I'll press I'll always goto a (or b or c but always the same)

    hi,
    for your actionlistener all those items are more or less the same. when browsing to them you have to give them different names or better different actioncommands.

  • Can I use DHCP snooping and IOS DHCP server on the same switch stack

    Hello,
    I am shortly going to be deploying a Cisco CallManager solution for a customer whose network comprises stacks of Catalyst 3850 switches.
    There is no separate core/server farm switch so the CallManager servers, voice gateways and IP phones will all plug into the same stack and be in the same VLAN (not my choice!).
    For security we want to enable DHCP snooping and were planning on using the IOS DHCP server on the Catalyst switch stack.
    Will this work? - when I enable DHCP snooping in networks with separate access layer switches I set the uplinks to the core as trusted links.
    I am not sure whether DHCP snooping will work in this case. Do I need to set the VLAN interface on the switch as trusted, is this even possible?
    Unfortunately I do not have access to a layer 3 switch to test this at the moment.
    Thanks

    Nope.  That's the issue.
    They'll sync on a third device acting as a hotspot, but the device sending a signal is not "on" the network it creates so the airport is all by itself on that network.  At least that is what it looks like to me.  Anyone have another take on it?  Seems pretty silly that an iPad can put out a wifi signal, an Airport Express can receive a wifi signal, and yet there is no simple way to get them to communicate under this particular condition.

  • Win 7 PC freeze and block network access for other PC on same switch during windows update from WSUS

    Hello,
    It's been a problem for me for a long time now, but the last time (today) I found 3 PC on 2 different switches that block all the network on this 2 switches during the update.
    I have a Domain with 80 PC with Win 7 (32&64bit) that takes the updates from the WSUS server that is configured on a Win2k8 r2. The system works well from 2 years from now but sometimes cause this errors that make me look like a dummy in front of angry
    employees. If one of the PC get freeze , it will cause lost of connection on all the PC on same switch, and i have to find the blocked PC, remove from network, restart switch and hope that they will came back on.
    Does anyone experienced this problem? Any help will be appreciated
    Thank you!
    List of updates for today below

    Hi
    Thanks for your response, yes I understand that the result is a Broadcast Storm and yes I have the cheapest switch on market :/.
    The interest fact is that on one PC, I changed everything and keep only the old HDD and on last updates yesterday it was one of the blocked one too. So this make
    me doubt that is something wrong in software on that PC. I don't have any third-part programs except browsers and all have Genuine Win7
    The only investigation remained is what happens during the update process?
    Is WSUS involved in something?
    And another thing is the fact that some of the PC are cloned, but I have carefully changed the SID

  • Mixing public and private networks on the same switch

    Hello Everyone,
    I know this may get some security engineers in frenzy but wanted to know if there is a safe way to mix public and private networks on the same switch.
    We have many remote offices that we want to add public wifi and a couple of other services that would be completely outside of our internal network.  Each office has a 3750 with plenty of open ports.  How can I safely create a vlan for public access on these switches which currently have our internal network on.  I have read that people are doing this to save on the cost of purchasing a dedicated switch.  Some people are using access lists and one person mentioned creating a private vlan for the public network.  I looked up private vlan and it seemed bit confusing.
    Is this recommended?  If not what would be the safest way to do this?
    Thanks Everyone

    How "safe" is relative.  If your running just one VLAN on a switch, that's would be the safest (basically the same as mixing traffic on the same wire - separation is done else where).
    If you multiple VLANs on a switch, then you need to determine how likely someone might figure out a way to breach the VLAN barriers.  (This isn't so easy on newer switches.)  If the VLAN isolation is breeched, then you need to examine what does that imply from a security perspective (for example can someone now inject or receive other VLAN traffic).
    For most purposes, I don't see mixing public and private VLANs, alone, on the same switch as much of a risk.  More of a concern is what can be reached on either VLAN and how well it's protected.
