Multicast questions

Good Morning.
We were looking to deploy wireless VoIP phones into our environment. These phones have a PTT feature which utilizes Multicast.
I was looking into configuring Multicast mode on the wireless controller and access points in our network. Do you think this is necessary or at least recommended for the PTT application or do I just let the unicast mode continue to function.
Also if we do enable multi-cast mode and videostream it is not supported on the Flex AP's. Would the Flex AP's still join the controllers or would we have to move the Flex AP's to another controller?

Saravanan Lakshmanan wrote:Does the Flex AP's default to Multicast-Unicast even if Multicast-Multicast is set on the global controller config?//No, it doesn't receive Multicast packets from WLC.Let see what're the parameters that can affect Multicast forwarding:#WLC platform.#Global AP Multicast mode config at WLC.#Mode of the AP - Local, Flexconnect central switching.#With flex Local switching, it doesn't even send/receive the packet to/from WLC, so it doesn't matter what Multicast mode is configured on wlc. Multicast support on different WLC platforms:#WLC 5500/WiSM2/8500 supports both Multicast and Unicast mode.#WLC 2500 supports Multicast to Multicast only.#WLC 7500 & vWLC supports Multicast to Unicast only. Supports Flex APs only. #Flexconnect mode AP can't join Multicast group address configured at WLC -> AP mode Multicast to Multicast. Since it is not joined to the Multicast group, it can't receive Multicast packet that are sent by WLC(and Multicast packet sent by flex central switching will be received by local mode APs only). If Multicast needs to be forwarded for flexconnect central switching then configure AP mode Multicast to Unicast. Remember, it is global config that's applicable for local mode AP also. #WLC 5500/WiSM2/8500 supports both Multicast and Unicast mode.//When mix of local mode AP and flex central switching is used where flex centrally switched wlan need to forward/receive Multicast traffic then need to set "AP Multicast mode to Unicast only". (With Multicast mode enabled, WLC can't send one copy to the Multicast address and individual copies to the Flex mode APs.) #WLC 2500 supports Multicast to Multicast only.//Flex central switched APs can't receive Multicast packets since it doesn't support Unicast mode. Use Flex local switching as workaround in this case. #WLC 7500 & vWLC supports Multicast to Unicast only. Supports Flex APs only.//It supports only Flex APs, so Multicast to Unicast is the only applicable config that is allowed. Since it is not cco documented, will try to address this on Multicast section of config guide.
So I read this again. Say we have Flex Central switching then we MUST configure AP unicast if the clients on the Flex AP need to be able to stream multicast? So if that is the case then the client just wont be able to join the multicast group?

  • Cisco WVC210 WLAN Camera - multicasting question

    Hello,
it act's about the CISCO WC210 WLAN Camera, I would be really happy, if somebody could help us to eliminate our problem
    Informatiom
We are using the WVC210 WLAN-Cameras (http://ww:w.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9948/), this camera has a web server, so is accessible over a normal web-browser, to see the video transmission.
We just set it up with a normal WLAN-Router, so the camera is connected wireless to the router, and this router is connected to the internet (WAN).
With the cisco video-software or the web-interface, it's now possible to stream the video.
    Our questions:
Now we like to stream the Video on our Website, so people what visit our site can take a look at our company and so on.
We are able to stream the Video with the MJEPG-Format, like the camera web-interfaces offers...
The problem is, with normal ip-transfer method, each user would connect directly to the camera and increases the data-transfer, the internet-connection will than overload easily.
But the camera supports multi-casting,  so the camera only transmit one data stream and all clients connected to this stream will receive the packages.
Our problem is, we do not have any knowledge about multi-casting and how it works, the camera has a normal ip-address and a pre-configured multicast address with group name, so how can we connect a client to this multicast group, without increasing the data-transfer with each new user?
Would you recommend us to use the multicast function of this camera or put a server between the camera and the website?
Could you give as advice or some kind of tutorial, how we can set up this multicast service and easily get a player for the stream on our website, without using many plug ins or special apps ?
Looking forward for your help, thank you all
    Regards
    Markus
P.s.: You can also reply in german

Hi, your general understanding of multicast is correct, but I don't think there is any multicast in general use on the Internet today.  In the mid 1990's there was a thing called MBONE that experimented with this idea for basically the same application as you describe- to multicast video.  Check Google or wikipedia for some history of MBONE in case you are interested. That said, you should be able to use the multicast ability on your own LAN/WAN environment if that helps you at all.
I think the way people stream video to many users via the Internet today is essentially by having a lot of bandwidth and CPU.  You could probably find places to host your video and 'rebroadcast' it via their servers and Internet bandwidth.   Take a look a qik.com for an example of something that might help you.  There must be other services similar to qik that can 'rebroadcast' video streams that you only send one stream to them and they let multiple users see it.  I would expect to pay something for this service, but you might find free, ad supported services.
Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

  • NEXUS Multicast questions

I have a question in regards to multicast support for the NEXUS 1000V/4001i/5548 w/L3 Daughter card.  Before the questions a quick background:  We are in the process of buying a IBM blade center with the aforementioned network pieces.  We are a modeling and simulations site and the servers we use primarily communicate via multicast.  Typically 6 class C’s worth of multicast addresses are reserved for this per event.  I was looking at doing layer 3 on the 5548’s but it has a limitation of 2000 multicast entries and I’m not even sure what that means i.e per VLAN/VRF or just total.  We have 4 suites - so if we run two events at the same time we will bust that number quick.  So we will continue to do layer 3 at the 6509’s for mcast and the nexus family will handle it at layer 2.
My real questions and concerns are these:
The 4001i states it will hold 1000 IGMP (Snooping) entries. What happens when it exceeds this number?  Should we just turn IGMP snooping off and let it flood everything in that VLAN (I have my concerns with that).
I cannot find any multicast limitations on the 1000v – are there any?
Any advice/help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Brad

    Ex,
Yes, all three Nexus products are available for order as of today.
As for Fabric Path, it's currently only supported on the Nexus 7K, with the F1 Line cards running NXOS 5.1 or later.  Fabric Path will be available on the 5548/5596 running 5.1(3)N1(1) codename "Fairhaven" release of NXOS.  Currenlty targeting mid-late 2011.
FYI - Fabric Path will require a separate license.

  • A follow-up Multicasting question (brh0001?)

But does the fact that I can't use my LocalHost to multicast internaly, mean that I must be connected to the web throughout the simulation??
    (Otherwise I got "Network unreachable".)
    Mustn't there be some alternative?
    Thanx.

Yep, I am trying to run the whole process on the same machine.
In fact it's the first project I run on LINUX and I haven't got the right modem for net connection from there...
    Thanx-a -lot, anyway.

  • Technical quicktime support?!

where do i get fast & cheap technical support concerning my quicktime & multicast questions?
i have a quicktime pro serial number.

Hmmmm, exactly what to do consider cheap?
If you have AppleCare then technical support is FREE for 3 years. If you don't have AC, then tech support I believe is around $40.<--- Cheap enough for ya?

  • WDS & MDT 2012 Integration Questions: Do I need an install image on WDS if I'm multicasting from MDT

I'm running WDS & MDT 2012 on Server 2012 for my deployment solution.  I have a few questions about what happens when you integrate WDS & MDT.
Perhaps this is a simple question, but if WDS multicasts the installation image from MDT, do I need to have an image in the installation folder of WDS?  I have the "Enable multicasting" box checked whenever I update my deployment share
Also, my server is running X64 architecture, so I have the x64 WAIK installed.  but I'm having issues editing the unattend.xml on my server because my images are all X86.  Keeping in mind that I already have the X64 WAIK installed, can i install
the X86 WAIK tools on my server?

Sorry, that's two questions you only get one... Just kidding...
FOr MDT, you don't import the images into the WDS console, you just need to add a Multicast namespace.

  • DMVPN w/ Multicasting setup/questions

    Hello
I have a lot of questions, so bare with me as i puke them out of my head.
I have been doing some testing with DMVPN inconjuction with multicasting video (Hub and spoke, w/ no spoke to spoke). The test setup is using 2 cisco 2811 w/out the vpn module.  I understand the performance hit with not having the module. With that being said here are my questions.
    1. With encryption on both the HUB and spoke routers are using 90-97% cpu (8Mb multicast stream).  With encryption off, the Hub is around 60%, and spoke around 75%.  Here is where i'm confused.  If i send that same stream as a unicast stream, w/ encryption on, both the Hub and spoke are only using around 30-35% cpu.  Why is there so much more cpu need when its a multicast stream?
    2. In the current config i'm seeing input, throttles, and ignore errors on the Hub and spoke.  The Hub has these errors on the LAN interface, and the spoke has these errors on the WAN interface. All other interfaces are totally clean.  I have checked and there are no duplex or speed mismatches.  Any ideas?

    Joe,
    You ask the right question.
CPU ultization = CPU consumed by processes + IO operations (in a huge simplification - CEF)
Typically when a packet is processed by router we expect it to be be processed by CEF, i.e. very fast.
Packet is not processed by CEF:
    - when there is something missing to route the packet properly (think missing ARP/CAM entry) i.e. additional lookup needs to be done.
    - a feature requests that a packet is for processing/mangling
    - Packet is destined to the router
(And several other, but those are the major ones).
When a packet is recived, but cannot be processed by CEF, we "punt the packet to CPU" this in turn will cause the CPU for processes to go up.
Now on the spoke this seems to be the problem:
Spoke#show ip cef switching stati       Reason                          Drop       Punt  Punt2HostRP LES Packet destined for us             0       1723          0RP LES Encapsulation resource             0    1068275          0
There were also some failures on one of the buffer outputs you've attached.
Typically at this stage I would suggest:
    1) "Upgrade" the device to 15.0(1)M6 or 12.4(15)T (latest image in this branch) and check if the problem persists there.
    2) If it does, swing it by TAC. I don't see any obvious mistakes, but I'm just a guy in a chair same as you ;-)

  • IGMP V3, SSM Multicast Boundaries config questions..

    Guys,
I am having some difficulty to understand the SSM boundary config sample from this Cisco doco.
eg 1, I am not sure why they have the host 0.0.0.0 line. Also the acl are base on ip, udp and igmp?
Eg 2, similar to eg 1 but it also has deny pim.
Could someone explain why do we need to use udp, pim & igmp for the boundery filter? Normally I would use ip instead. (eg: permit ip host 181.1.2.201 host 232.1.1.1)
    eg 1:
The following example permits outgoing traffic for (181.1.2.201, 232.1.1.1) and (181.1.2.202, 232.1.1.1) and denies all other (S,G)s.
    configure terminal
    ip access-list extended acc_grp1
    permit ip host 0.0.0.0 232.1.1.1 0.0.0.255
permit ip host 181.1.2.201 host 232.1.1.1
permit udp host 181.1.2.202 host 232.1.1.1
permit ip host 181.1.2.202 host 232.1.1.1
deny igmp host 181.2.3.303 host 232.1.1.1
    interface ethernet 2/3
    ip multicast boundary acc_grp1 out
    eg 2:
The following example permits outgoing traffic for (181.1.2.201, 232.1.1.5) and 181.1.2.202, 232.1.1.5).
    configure terminal
    ip access-list extended acc_grp6
    permit ip host 0.0.0.0 232.1.1.1 5.0.0.255
deny udp host 181.1.2.201 host 232.1.1.5

  • Multicast Imaging--2 questions

    1) I'm deploying ZDM 6.5 to a very large school district. At one of my
test sites, multicast imaging is turned on. Everything about the
multicast session works as it should from the ZDM perspective. However,
the session takes 70 minutes to complete to a single workstation. Is a
multicast session to a single client problematic? When I unicast the same
image to the same workstation, the simple image process takes 17 minutes.
This doesn't seem to be a ZDM issue, but I can't say that for sure.
Before our WAN guy blew me off, he told me that multicasting is turned on
to all VLANs in the school, so "of course it's slow." I gave him the VLAN
segment I needed, and asked him to turn it on only to that specific lab
    VLAN. Does this matter?
    2) My WAN group insists on knowing the IP address that ZEN imaging uses
for multicasting. I understand that it changes, but I don't know how to
convince them of this. They tell me they MUST have an ip address. This,
even though in #1 above, multicast imaging is obviously working with the
address I provided, before I knew that the address changes. I don't speak
no stinkin' Cisco, so I'm easy prey...
    Any assistance will be appreciated

multicasting is always slower.. not that much though normally..

the multicast IP will change depending on the session name.. so you can
figure those IP addresses out when you run the session.. the ip address
being used is based on the session name and shouldn't change..

  • Multicast Group Questions

If I have 10 multicast streams going to flash media server how should I configure Group name and stream names ? Each stream will be watched by a different set of people but pushed to same FMS . Should giving each stream a seperate name and seperate stream name will be fine ?
    Thanks

It depends on how do you want to implement. You can have different streams under one NetGroup or you can create one NetGroup for one set of people.

  • Questions about MultiCast Rate

    1. What is MultiCast Rate?
    2. The default is 2 Mbps, isn't it? Is it country dependent?
    3. How to choose among the 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps options available?
    4. Can the choice affect the interference with other devices?

    1. What is MultiCast Rate?
The Multicast Rate option sets the threshold throughput level a wireless client must obtain in order to be "accepted" by the base station. The lower this value, theoretically, the greater number of clients that can connect, especially those at greater distances from the base station. At the opposite end, the higher this number, only those wireless clients that can achieve the higher throughput value will be able to connect.
Every client negotiates bandwidth individually. Regardless of what the multicast rate is set to, the clients are going to be using the highest data rate their connection to the base station is capable of. Therefore the clients close to the base station will be using a high data rate while the clients far from the base station will be using a lower data rate. If the data rate to any client falls below the multicast rate, that connection will be dropped.
    2. The default is 2 Mbps, isn't it? Is it country dependent?
That would depend on the firmware version that is running on the AirPort. For example, on the simultaneous dual-band AirPort Extreme, this option only provides for Low, Medium, or High settings. It is NOT country dependent.
    3. How to choose among the 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps options available?
You would use the AirPort Utility to select the MultiCast Rate from the Wireless Network Options panel.
    4. Can the choice affect the interference with other devices?
No. This setting is totally different than the radio channel setting. Having two base stations near each other, that are operating on the same channel, will cause Wi-Fi interference between them.

  • Newbie clustering question / multicasting

    Hi,
Wondering if anybody can point me in the right direction. I want to run
Weblogic in a cluster. My sticking point seems to be the multicasting
aspect. I have three boxes with 192.168.1.xxx address. They connect to a
Netopia SDSL router so I can connect to the Internet. I have 1 WAN IP and 2
useable public IPs so I can map each of the three IPs to each of my three
boxes. Been trying to read up on multicasting. From weblogic documentation
I need a multicast address. Is it correct that this address would be the
address of my router? But I don't think my router supports multicasting
since it's just a cheap dsl router. Is there anything I can do to get
              around this problem?
              Thanks.

Correction to my previous post. The multicast addresses can only be in the
range 224.0.0.1 to 239.255.255.255. The 192.168.1.xxx addresses are fine for
              the machines.

  • Need help to deploy IP Multicast in private network

    Hi,
I am currently working on a project where there is an urgent requirement to deliver an IP multicast solution.
The network itself is fairly simple.
IP Cameras as connected to pairs of Catalyst 2960 switches in 'access nodes'. There are 8 cameras per node, 4 on each switch. There are multiple nodes, 3 at the moment in our testing environment, all trunked together, so 24 cameras in total.
The Catalyst 2960 switches are trunking to a Core node, which consists of a pair of Catalyst 3750 switches with MHSRP configured for each of 8 VLANs, with 2 DCs and 2 Video storage servers for storing camera footage attached to access ports on those switches. We also have workstations attached to the core node switches which have software installed to view live images and manage the cameras across the network.
We have no routing - the access switches have default gateways pointing to the VLANs SVIs configured on the core switch, and each function has its on VLAN. InterVLAN routing is enabled on the 3750s and connectivity is working fine.
I wish to send a TCP stream to the Video Storage servers for storage, and to multicast to the workstations so that the software can see multiple streams from multiple cameras.
Could someone please suggest a suitable deployment strategy, including how to configure the cameras and switches appropriately to allow this to happen? I am struggling to understand what type of configuration is required.
Much appreciated. I'm actively viewing this thread for assistance.

I don't think IP Base supports any PIM mode other than PIM stub routing (unless you know otherwise) so your solution wouldn't work. Or perhaps i am not understanding ?
    Martin
I think the only way forward is to test what we have already covered.
I didn't realise this was a test environment so at least you can try all things out without worrying about the production network.
The thread i linked to suggested that you can get the routing working even without a L3 device capable of running full multicast routing but at the moment the question concerns those extra commands you can't enter. Can you verify they are not available in config mode ?
An additional problem is because PIM is passive on the SVIs no IGMP queries are being made so there is no way for the switches to work out which ports needs the multicast stream and so it will be flooded.
There is a function, supported on the 3750s called the IGMP querier function which allows the switch to make IGMP queries per vlan without PIM enabled. We may be able to use this but i have absolutely no idea how it will work with the L3 multicast routing config.
I recommend you try and get multicast routing working first. If you can get to the stgae where you can send a multicast stream from one vlan to another then you should be able to use wireshark to then see each port in the destination vlan receiving the stream (even when you don't want it to).
If you can get to that stage we can then try the IGMP snooping querier to see if we can restrict the stream to only those ports that need to receive it. It may be we can't in which case -
    a) you could statically configure the multicast mac address to the relevant ports but this is no scalable and does not allow clients to dynamically join and leave the multicast group
    or
    b) simply allow the stream to be flooded to all ports within the destination vlan. Not ideal and kind of defeats the purpose of multicast but you may have no choice.
I doubt whether any of this would be supported by Cisco though as i think their position would be to simply upgrade to an IP Services license although in understand this may not be possible for you because of cost.

  • Airport Extreme multicast rate and closed network

    New to Airport Extreme.
Is the multicast rate the same as the TX rate on other routers? I chose 11Mbps during the setup and my Macbook was very slow. I moved it back to 2 Mbps and it sped up. Distance from macbook to airport approx. 24 inches.
Other question/ statement. I assume that the closed network portion of the setup is the same as turning off the SSID of other routers. Do I assume correctly?

goldengti, Welcome to the discussion area!
Is the multicast rate the same as the TX rate on other routers?
Sorry I don't know about other routers. The multicast rate defines the minimum data rate the base station will use and maintain the wireless connection. If you set it to 11 Mbps, the wireless connection will be broken if that data rate can't be maintained.
Other question/ statement. I assume that the closed network portion of the setup is the same as turning off the SSID of other routers. Do I assume correctly?
Yes the same useless option. Regardless of how you set this option on any router, the SSID is still broadcast between any connected clients and the base station. Therefore it only takes a few seconds to discover the SSID.

  • ITunes 11 Stops Responding to Bonjour Discovery Multicast Broadcasts, Why?  This stops the the Apple TV 3 from being able to start a new stream from the home share and the iPad remote app can no longer see the home share too.

I'm having an issue where my Apple TV 3 and all our iPads periodically seem to loose connectivity to an iTunes home share on a Windows 7 PC.  Using a network protocol analyser on the PC I have identified that the point of failure corresponds to the ATV3 sending a bonjour discovery request and getting no reply from iTunes.  Why the ATV3 'forgets' where the home share is is possibly another issue but the root cause of the failure is that iTunes, or more specifically the mDNSResponder service, is not responding to the UDP multicast port 5353 broadcast discovery packet sent by the ATV3 or iPad.  The mDNSResponder service does start responding again after iTunes is restarted thus making the home share accessible once more, however, this frequent drop out is unacceptable and often happens after only a single TV show has been watched from the home share making the solution unworkable for a family, we simply cannot be restarting iTunes constantly it ruins the user experience completely!
The nature of this failure indicates that the ATV3, the iPads, the host PC and network are all working correctly and the point of failure here is the lack of response to the bonjour discovery protocol with the net result of either a spinning 'connecting to home share' message or the home share just disappearing from the computers section.
If there is a configuration fix for this please let me know as I haven't located a fix!  Otherwise this seems very much to be a code flaw in iTunes 11 or the mDNSResponder and I would appreciate some input from Apple!  Going on other questions in these forums it would seem the problem is not limited to Windows PCs but also Macs too.  NB: This is not a TCP issue, when the ATV3 or iPad knows the IP of the iTunes server all works flawlessly, it just periodically they seem to refresh the list of home shares and at this point they loose the information about the home share they have just been using because of the non-response to the UDP multicast discovery broadcast packet, that is arriving at the host PC and isn't being blocked by the firewall.
    Many Thanks!

In my case there was no import from a former mac.
My problem (at least mine) is that no app that offers media sharing works properly. Neither itunes home sharing nor AirVideo nor EyeTV sharing.
So I'm pretty sure that this is network issue.
Adding another user on my mac and sharing a new library works not also. But sharing from another laptop in my WiFi works. So this has to be a network issue on my mac, not only my user, but an issue of the whole system.
But I'm not willing to reinstall MacOS X for that if I don't have to.
