Multicasting Using Virtual Distribution Point

For a while now I have been troubleshooting various problems related to multicasting with SCCM 2012 r2. My most recent hurdle has been overcoming
awful multicast stream speeds. Production Distribution Points are Windows Server 2012 r2 virtualized on ESX 5.5 using the VMXNET3 network adapter. Networking (so far) has not been able to find any errors or packet loss on the network, so I am thinking maybe
the Virtualization layer could be cause of my headaches. I stood up a physical Distribution Point in same network as some physical clients. From testing with the physical Distribution Point the speeds have definitely increased. Speeds were maxing out at about
20 Mbps once all of the client machines joined the multicast stream. I am more confident now that something in the virtualization layer is causing the problem, maybe the virtual switch? I just don’t know. Does anyone out there have any thoughts or suggestions
from where to go from here? What to check in the virtualization layer, etc? Has anyone else experienced slow multicast speeds when using a virtual ESX host as a Multicast Distribution Point, or even had acceptable speeds for that matter?
-Tony

On the virtual side of things, Microsoft acknowledged there is a known bug and to get semi usable speeds the WDS registry setting of TpMaxBandwidth needs to be changed from 100 [default] to 1. However, even with that we still have not been able to push past
11%-14% network utilization. boo! :-)

  • Some Clients not using Local Distribution Point

I have a new physcial site that we are wanting to put the SCCM client on the workstations. The local DP has been setup and the SCCM 2012 config settings for the new site have been made. I did a manual push to 5 workstations and monitored the ccmsetup.log.
I had some clients using the local DP for the client install and some went back across the WAN to the MP to get the files. The ones that come back across the WAN to the MP have this in their log shown below. It does not appear to be boundary related or
Client OS as they are in the same subnet that is configured and have both xp and win7 working and not working. I found a few others have had this issue come up searching the web, but none of solutions helped in my situation. The client is installing on
all of the workstations I have manually pushed it to. I just can't figure out why some are not using the local DP and YES I have verified that the ones not using the local DP are in the same boundary group as the ones that do.
Any help is appreciated. FVH081-DP1 is the local DP and AHDC400 is my MP

Single forest with mutiple child domains. SCCM is in one child domain trying to get this other child domain's workstations as clients. We have the same setup for another child domain and it worked without any issues.
The IIS log file in C:\inetpub\logs\logfiles\w3svc1 only shows the successful installs. There are no entries about any failures in the log to correlate unfortunately. All failures have been XP SP3 machines except for one Win7 pc and all successes have been
Win7 except for one xp machine.
You wouldn't think it is network related because some workstations can access the DP fine.
It's not boundaries because the successes and failures are all sharing the same subnet that is configured.
Wasn't MSI 4.5 required for SCCM 2012 clients?

  • SCEP 2012R2 downloading Endpoint Protection definitions from Microsoft, rather than using internal Distribution Point

    Hi all,
Need your help figuring out why SCEP definitions are being updated from Microsoft and not from the local DP.
    * I have a new 5 site SCCM hierarchy with a Primary site installed in EMEA HQ and a secondary site in 4 x USA offices.
    * A Software update point and Endpoint protection point are deployed in HQ primary site.
    * Software updates for SCEP have been synched down to the Primary site server which has WSUS role installed, a software update group created and an Automatic Deployment rule created to push these definition updates to the relevant device collection.
    * Distribution > Content Status shows the software update package has been replicated successfully to all 5 DP's in the environment.
    * An antimalware policy that specifies only SCCM as the definition updates has been created and is deployed to the relevant device collection.
    * Custom client settings that disable alternate sources for initial definition update have also been created and deployed to the relevant device collection.
**** Yet, a closer look at the MPRUNCMD.log on client machines, shows that definition updates are coming from Microsoft
I'm baffled why they still download from Microsoft despite disallowing this and making the DP the only source.

Note - One of the secondary sites has a very poor internet connection, so it's not feasible for definitions to be downloaded from the web. This is why a solution is required.
    Thanks....

    Hi,
Could these clients get other updates from SCCM?
You could check the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CCM\EPAgent\LastAppliedPolicy to see if the definition updates policy is applied to the client.
    Best Regards,
    Joyce

  • Distribution Point install failure

    Hi all,
In all our company uses 8 distribution point and the majority are 2008 R2 domain controllers.
About two days ago I have done an inplace upgrade on one server to 2012 R2.
The upgrade went mostly without a hitch except for the SCCM DP.
The error that I was getting was "access denied" or something along those lines when the site server was attempting to distribute content.
So I have tried a lot of things so far to the point where I decided to remove the distribution point and start over. No Joy...
I am getting an error on the distribution point in the SCCM console stating "Failed to verify the disk drive". when looking further into the distmgr.log, nothing makes sense to me. please see the below log.

    So I have two questions,
How can I fix this and how do I prevent it from happening to the remainder?
    Thank you all in advance.
    Daniel.

The server does not appear at all
You really need to give more information so we can help you.
What about the logs, are you getting the same errors after making all the changes? please upload the full log to SkyDrive or any other place.
    Did you reboot this DP\DC?
Can you successfully ping from the primary to DP and back?
Do you have access from primary to C$ on that DP?
What account did you choose for installation?
Did you choose to install IIS?
If IIS was installed, try to remove it and let DP installation install it automatically.
Confirm that PowerShell 3.0 is installed.
Please take a moment to Vote as Helpful and/or Mark as Answer where applicable. Thanks.
    Hi Idan,
    I will go through and reply to each of the suggestions you have made below;
    1. The log that was attached was the full log. I cleared the log prior to setting up the DP and copied the contents into this forum after it has stopped.
    2. Yes I had rebooted, Many times.
    3. Yes I can successfully ping either way.
    4. Yes I can access the C$ share on the DP from the Primary
    5. I have tried both the PC account and a service account that is part of the domain admins group and also added to the local admins via a net command
    6. Yes I did choose to install IIS and I had already tried uninstalling IIS and running the install again.
    7. as above
    8. Yes Powershell 3.0 is installed

  • Calling back with empty distribution points list : Local DP vs Remote DP

    Hi all,
I am an issue getting remote offices to pull packages (A task sequence) from their onsite DP. They keep pulling from the main DP in the datacenter.
How do I ensure the mainDP is not considured 'LOCAL' but it is 'REMOTE' and the local office DP is 'LOCAL'?
    Here is my setup:
SCCM 2012 with DP / MP set in Datacenter: mainDP
3 Offices up the country with local DP Server: OfficeDP1 / OfficeDP2 / OfficeDP3 (green under monitoring and my packages show as verified content)
SCCM Boundaries set via "AD Site". This matches our AD Structure. In AD Sites and Services, each site has a unique IPv4 addressing (AD Address Prefix: Office1 - 192.168.100.0/25 & Office 2 - 192.168.101.0/25 etc)
Each SCCM Boundary has a boundary group that reflects the local office
The locationservices file on an office PC has:
Current AD Site of machine is Office1
Calling back with the following distribution points
    Distribution Point='http://mainDP/SMS_DP_SMSPKG$/PR10005D', Locality='LOCAL', DPType='SERVER', Version='7804', Capabilities='<Capabilities SchemaVersion="1.0"><Property Name="SSLState" Value="0"/></Capabilities>',
    Signature='http://mainDP/SMS_DP_SMSSIG$/PR10005D', ForestTrust='TRUE',
I would expect it to say http://Office1DP/SMS_DP_SMSPKG$/PR10005D
This is how I configured my separate packages / programs:
    Package A and Package B:
Data Source Tab: disabled Binary diff replication
    Data Access Tab: nothing ticked
Distribution Settings: ticked - distribute the content for this package to pref dist points
Program 1 and 2 respective config:
Advanced tab: ticked - Allow this program to be installed...deployed
This is settings when the TS deployed agaisnt Device Collection
Distribution Points Tab: Nothing ticked (no fallback configured nor use remote distribution point)
Deployment options dropdown: Download all content locally before starting task sequence

    Help
    Thanks

This may not be the answer you're looking for since you're doing boundaries differently.
This is how I have it setup and it works perfect.
    1)  Do ip ranges for all boundaries
    2)  Assign each boundary to a boundary group
    3)  Add the remote dp as the site server in the boundary group
    4)  Also make sure the main local dp also has a boundary group with all the ip ranges that don't have a remote dp.
I believe when you download something from software center, you can check the following log to see what download locations it finds.

  • Restrict clients from a distribution Point

Is there any way to restrict distribution points to clients from a particular limiting collection or at least change the priority of a distribution point used?

Our organization has several entities that provide support desktop. Central IT provides core services support such as networking, directory services and email services to the entire organization.  Central IT also provides Desktop support to a large
portion of our organization.  We offer the entities of our organization that have their own desktop support use of our tools such as SCCM.  It is configured with collection limiting to limit access to each entities OU so that the admins can administer
the machines in their ou and that's it.  We also allow them to use the content, i.e. Applications, programs, task sequences etc that we (Centeral IT) create.  In some cases the admins distribute our content to their Distribution points.  I am
noticing that this causes some of our deployments to use their distribution points for content and not ours.  We don't have a very clear cut IP configuration to break out each entities with their own boundary group.  I just want our clients to use
our distribution points because with they use other distribution points, we are noticing slowness in deployments such as OSD.

  • Pull Distribution Point on updates removing

(1)When you distribute packages, you can use Pull Distribution Point. By this way, "SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER" component can do more Jobs. OK.
(2)My question is about the process of updates removing. SCCM Site takes long time to remove expired updates from DP. Is this action managed by "SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER" or SCCM Site notifies Pull DP to remove updates like (1)

distmgr is not involved when it comes to pull DPs. So assumption (1) is wrong. All actions are done by the pull DP after it was "notified" by the site.

  • Management point and Distribution point behind netscaler for virtual ip/dns name

Is it supported to place a server behind a netscaler for using a virtual IP/DNS name?
We are looking into placing our distribution points and management points behind the netscaler to provide firewall functionality.
We would point our clients to a different DNS name for each individual MP and DP to provide routing through the netscaler.
As far as I know this is only possible using IBCM.
Please let me know if this is possible without IBCM internally.

Using a different DNS name is problematic as there is no way to specify an alternate fqdn for a site system on the intranet. Clients use the actual fqdn of the system hosting the role; this is given out by the MP directly to the client based upon the site
    system's actual name.
You could manipulate name resolution in a variety ways so ultimately the actual IP used wouldn't matter, but that's useless unless the client is using the proper name.
If you you could use the same name and IP, then it should work no problem as long as the traffic is properly delivered to the site system. Ultimately, nearly all client agent to site system traffic is nothing more than WebDAV via IIS on the site system so
    just basic web traffic.

  • Distribution Point Multicast and Unicast at same time

    Hi,
Scenario: SCCM 2012 R2. All in one server.
The server is distribution point (PXE and Multicast enabled).
    The questions are:
If any Multicast dependency fails (i.e firewall blocks ports for multicast traffic),
Does the OS image will be deployed using unicast?
Is mandatory the multicast deployment method?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
No, when the multicast fail the TS would failed.
If you select the checkbox “Transfer this package only via multicast” in Configuration Manager Client Package Properties, which is mandatory.

  • Using an ASA 5505 as a Certificate Authority and Distribution Point?

I had a question about the limitations of an ASA 5505 and using it as CA. The setup would be as follows:
2 ASA 5520's in set up for high availability failover.
1 ASA set up with a local CA server.
If I had to set up VPN to connect to an interface on the ASA 5520's and wanted to require certificates as a secondary authentication could they use an ASA 5505 as a CA to retrieve and verify stored certificates? The issue I ran in to was not being able to set up a local CA server on the failover pair and was hoping to use an ASA 5505 with a local CA server to act as a distribution point. I have been researching various configurations similar to this but have not found definitive information if it is even possible.
If someone could verify if this is even possible and / or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Rick

You can only create self signed certificates using the ASA, or import a identity certificate from a 3rd party CA.  The ASA unfortunately can only issue user certificates to users or PCs via downloading from a website, they cannot complete CSR requests.

  • SCCM 2012 sync distribution point WITHOUT actuvating/using the second DP

    Hi,
Pls advise howto sync distribution points WITHOUT using the second one (to which is synced).
We only want to activate it after a full sync and in a controllerd manner (to test if it works fully correct).
Note: I removed it in the boundary group, tab references, site system servers for now. It is still active in the Distribution points underneath Administration.
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

No, he's saying that if it's not included in a boundary group (and not enabled for fallback), then no clients will ever find it to be used. Clients locate and use DPs entirely based upon their association with a boundary group and the boundaries within
that boundary group. Thus, if its not part of a boundary group, client won't be able to locate it. Just because its active doesn't mean anything.

  • Distribution Point IIS Config - Multiple applications using Default Web Site

    Hi all,
I've having some problems with a distribution point, when trying to download content I'm getting the following error in the datatransferservices.log:
Error sending DAV request. HTTP code 500, status 'Internal Server Error'
Looking at IIS, I can see that another application (uniflow print server) has published folders under the Default Web Site.
    Reading
similar errors it appears it may be to do with ISAPI filters being configured by the other application. Unfortunately these filters are required by the Uniflow application. So, my question is:
Is there any way to change the web site used by the distribution point?
    Thanks,
    Iain

Not on a one off basis, no. The web sites are tied to ports which means you would also have to change the port. Both are global changes. The better solution is to not multi-purpose a DP.

  • Software Updates using distribution points

    Hi,
I have primary site and configured all settings well. Also I installed SUP on the primary site. I have 3 other sites with slow connection. I need to plan SU for them. is it better to create secondary site on the 3 sites or Distribution points will be
    enough for them?
    Thanks,
    Kareem Behery

I agree with Wally. Adding 3 Seconday Sites with a SUP, will add both administrative overhead and make the installation more complex.
As a general rule, I always recomend to go with the simple solution. Then you can always "upgrade" one or more of the sites if you later finds out that you need to.

That's right. Windows 2003 Server is not supported. Your original question was about Windows Server 2003 SP2.
That is supported for PXE but does not support multicast or PXE booting of EFI.

  • SCCM 2012 Distribution Point without IIS

Hello. My environment is SCCM 2012 SP1. I need to set up distribution points on several Windows Server 2003 machines. These machines have certain security requirements. One of which is no IIS. In SCCM 2007, I was able to create DPs without installing IIS.
This prevented the use of BITS extensions but was acceptable. I cannot seemed to do the same with SCCM 2012.
As a test, I performed three steps to test a DP without IIS on a Windows Server 2003 machine 1) Made the primary server a local administrator on the Windows Server 2003 machine, 2) Installed RDC using the msrdcoob_x86.exe file, 3) in the admin console, I
created a new site system server with the distribution point role. I did not check allow it to install IIS to install/configure during the setup. The distribution point reports a successful installation status but I get three errors when I try to distribute
a package. The first error message is Failed to create virtual directory on the defined share or volume of the distribution point. The second error is Distribution Manager failed to connect the the distribution point. The third error is Distribution Manager
failed to process package "Package Name". I know that installing IIS with BITS extensions and WebDav support would fix this problem. However, I would like to use the DP without IIS like I did in SCCM 2007.
Looking at the supported configurations, I see the below. This leads me to below that it is possible. Does anyone know if this is possible? If so, what I am missing in my steps.
With System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, the distribution point site system role does not require Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). When BITS is configured on the distribution point computer, BITS on the distribution
point computer is not used to facilitate the download of content by clients that use BITS

BITS is a client side technology and has nothing to do with the server side of a DP or IIS and thus is irrelevant.
WebDAV was built into the relevant components of ConfigMgr obviating the need for the Windows Server WebDAV component so that's not needed for 2012 at all and thus N/A.
Ultimately, no, this is not possible. IIS is required on a DP in ConfigMgr 2012. This is clearly listed at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx#BKMK_SiteSystemRolePrereqs.
