Multichannel audio output
Hello,
in director i use 8 sound channels, but with the mix xtra these "channels" are murged to one stereo output.
now i want to use a multichannel soundcard like the ESI GIGAPORT HD. is it possible to play the director sounds on thes external sound channels... or is it possible to switch the output mix from channel 1/2 to channel 3/4.... 1/2 loutspeakers 3/4 earphones...
Director 11.5 has a new audio engine that can do full 7.1 sound. You can have individual control ovr any of the channels and send different audio to different speakers. Also, there are a lot of audio filters and things to adjust your sound. This will involve some significant recoding on your side to get it from the old sound system to the new one, since they are not done the same way at all. But look at the docs about the new audio engine (download the free trial of Director 11.5 if you don't have it already) for more info.

LE 7.1 and Multichannel audio units
Hi guys,
I had this issue playing midi files with a Multichannel Instrument.. I hope to explain my problem quite clear...
All volume and pan messages are detected by the master volume and pan in Logic instead of being used in the single part of the au instruments.
I use Hypersonic 2 to play midi files but Logic get the volume and pan messages
on thye main channel instead of redirecting them to the single part..
Is there anyone who can help me?
Thank You very much!
FabioIn fact, Logic doesn't handle multichannel (multi-timbral) AU plugins correctly according to the AU standard, ie. MIDI volume and pan are not passed to the plugin. A simple workaround is to use multiple instances of the plugin. Or, if the plugin has multichannel audio output you may control these channels individually.
The issue has often been discussed on this and other forums. Unfortunately it's nowhere mentioned in Logic manuals or help files.

Audio Output from Mac Mini 2010
Hello -
I purchased a mac mini 2010 this weekend for use as a home theater PC. I've got it connected to an Onkyo tx-sr604 a/v receiver via HDMI. I then pass the HDMI signal from the Onkyo to my hdtv, so I think it just passes through. For audio, I use a surround sound system. And, in case it matters, I have a second tv connected via the DVI output on the mini.
The Onkyo indicates that the audio input signal on the HDMI is PCM Multichannel. When I play movies (e.g., Netfix or DVD) or music (e.g., pandora) on the mini, I don't get any sound on the center channel in multi-channel mode. In direct mode, I only get sound in the front left and right speakers. I'd like to have normal surround sound.
Is there not a way to get 5.1 surround sound from the mini? Or, am I missing a set up or something? If I connect my receiver to the mini with the digital audio output, will I then receive digital audio?
Thanks.Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Mike it is my understanding that if you want 5.1 Surround sound that you must connect the mini directly to the SS system and not pass the audio signal through another device.

How to chang audio-output-device(s) in Windwos 8
Hi,
currently I’m working on an application that starts by changing the audio-output-device and ends with re-setting the old one.
On Windows XP I do this by changing the Registry-entry “Sound-Mapper” and it works quite well.
I hopefully assume it works on all Windows Systems from XP to Windows 7.
The background is that our program is supposed to play certain multi-channel sounds over an external USB-multichannel-soundcard and it should switch to that device on start. To actually play the sounds we use the AxWindowsMediaPlayer-Class
to integrate the Windows-Media-Player in our application.
However, on Windows 8, it is possible to set multiple Audio-Outputs and the Windows-Media-player has a setting to choose from them (under Options). I was unable to use the Registry-trick to switch the output-device and I could not find
a way to programmatically tell the AxWindowsMediaPlayer to choose the USB-soundcard as an output.
Is there a Way to programmatically(c#) ether change the audio-output-device(s) in Windos8 or to tell
AxWindowsMediaPlayer to use a certain device?
Thank you.Hi Kristin,
I think your reply pushed me in the right direction.
The waveOutOpen-function is part of the
winmm.dll-API and I think, that API is the solution to my Problem.
Unfortunately I am stuck at this point. I tried mciSendString and mciSendComand. Both are cappable of playing sound, but I am unable to change the output Device.
This is my c# code to open a WAV-File via mciSendCommand:
MCI_OPEN_PARMS open = new MCI_OPEN_PARMS();
open.wDeviceID = 0;//this is somehow ignored
open.lpstrDeviceType = Marshal.StringToHGlobalAnsi("waveaudio");
open.lpstrElementName = Marshal.StringToHGlobalAnsi(@"test.wav");
IntPtr ptr = Marshal.AllocHGlobal(Marshal.SizeOf(typeof(MCI_OPEN_PARMS)));
Marshal.StructureToPtr(open, ptr, false);
mciSendCommand(Convert.ToUInt32(textBox2.Text),
MCI_OPEN,
MCI_WAIT | MCI_OPEN_TYPE | MCI_OPEN_ELEMENT,
ptr);
Afterwards I use mciSendCommand to start the playing of the sound, which works fine, but no matter what I enter in the “open.wDeviceID”-Line, I always get sound over
the default output.
I use waveOutGetDevCaps to get the number and kind of the output-Devices and this works fine.

Multichannel optical output unavailable (gray)
Multichannel optical output unavailable (gray)
Hello
I can not have an output multichannel audio in 5.1 (or 7.1) for the parameter digital output built-in "configure speakers" I stay in stereo.
Multichannel is gray
I am using the Apple DVD player DTS and DD 5.1 but
Why with the numérique optical output is not able to access the settings multichannel sound 2.0 digital audio output domme the parmetres Apple's program "audio midi"
xavierIt appears that my underlying question is whether Apple will either add digital pass through to Quicktime or to the system. My main need for 5.1 surround with Quicktime is for Divx files. Once you install the Divx software, Quicktime can play Divx files (such as rips of my DVDs), which can be recorded with 5.1 surround using AC-3.
On a related note, I see that this free AC-3 codec for Quicktime was just released. <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27300> Both this and the Divx codec are now available as Universal Binaries.
Am I right in thinking that I could use the AC-3 codec to play 5.1 surround if I used external firewire hardware, but I can't do it with the built-in S/PDIF port? If so, that seems like something Apple needs to fix. -
Multichannel Audio Export (.aif, .wav)
Hi everyone, I just submitted a feature request and want to encourage anyone who would like this feature to do the same (or, if I've somehow missed a way to actually do it, to tell me how - I've searched extensively on here, Google, Creative Cow, etc. though and am positive it can't be done).
I'll just paste what was in my request. Hope this is something that can be added in the very near future...
Multichannel audio file export
Ability to output .wav or .aif files with multiple channels.
I work on a Mac, and we sometimes have to output multichannel audio files to send to clients for international distribution, specifically 4 channels (stereo mix L+R, music + effects L+R). The only way to do this out of Premiere/Media Encoder is as a quicktime .mov with no video. This isn't ideal as clients are requesting either .aif or .wav files.
This ability exists in Compressor for .aiff files, but I'm trying to avoid going back to Apple's suite as much as possible. It's irritating to have to output audio files separately from Premiere then open up Final Cut and output to Compressor to get a final, proper 4-channel audio file.
This is significant as we're looking to replace my computer soon and I'm pushing to go with a PC, where I'd no longer even have the option to go back into Compressor to do this.
For the record I also tried doing this through Audition which ironically seems to have even fewer audio exporting options than Media Encoder. It seems like a really simple feature that is lacking for no apparent reason..please include it ASAP, thank you.
Link to the feature request page: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
For the record, I know that for all intents and purposes, the Quicktime .mov audio file works fine. But it's still a pain, doesn't open properly in some players, and dealing with clients who use different software (Avid in this case) and don't have much experience handling this type of stuff and are specifically requesting .wav or .aif/.aiff; it's not my place to be their tech support, it's mine to deliver what the client wants. And it seems ridiculous to me that Compressor supports this with ease but Premiere/AME don't...Hey Jim, are you on CC? I'm stuck on CS6 at work until we do a full hardware upgrade, they're waiting on real info on Maverick/new Mac Pro before making any decisions.
If this is a feature of CC now well..foot in mouth, I guess. Would still be nice in CS6 though.. I notice in your screenshot the source sequence says "multichannel", in mine it says "16 channel". -
i am trying to output a wav file from a avi file.
this file has multi channel audio, in this case 4 channels, though when outputting the audio by
After Effets, mono or stereo is the only available choice.
In this case, which channel will be extracted from the avi file?I'm 99% sure that only the first 2 channels will be imported. I've seen some weirdness where multichannel audio has been bounced to a stereo pair on import causing a jump in levels. Your best bet is to use Soundbooth (or Premiere) or an audio/editing app to do the conversion.

How to get the Mac Mini Digital Audio output at 192kHz?
I have a mid 2011 Mac Mini (and love it). According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4806, "The headphone / line output port accommodates digital optical audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS)."
So there is digital audio output to 192 kHz but how do you configure it to work? Using the Audio Midi Setup Utility, I can set the sample rate to 96000 Hz -- but it won't go higher to 192kHz. Anyone know how to do this?That is in some ways confusing. For the analog output, the
internal DAC can support 24 bit/192Khz audio data. It does
require an application that has the capability of playing back
such material.
The TOSLINK optical standard does not support this data rate.
It has nothing to do with the Mini, it is the standard itself. The
TOSLINK optical spec is 96 kHz, 24 bit stereo (uncompressed).
The mini will however support multichannel, 24 bit, 192 kHz
(uncompressed) via the HDMI interface. Also, again,
the playback software needs to support it.
Just as a final note, unless the source material has the
higher sample rate format, there is no benifit to outputing
at the higher sample rate, especially if the source some
lossy comporessed format (mp3, aac, Dollby and DTS
non-HD formats). -
Built in audio output (speakers) are playing through different channels.
My built in audio output (speakers) are playing through different channels. How do I make them both play through the same channel? It has something to do with the audio midi setup. When i click "Configure Speakers" on th Built-In Output I don't get the option of "-" for which channel the audio should go out of, I just get "1" or "2" as an option. This happens when i select them to be both stero and multichannel speakers. Any ideas on how to fix it?
Is there a red light glowing inside the jack? It sounds like a faulty jack. Read this:

Asrock ION330/Nvidia HDMI - No audio output
Machine was running archlinux and not been upgraded in over 6mths but HDMI audio worked fine. Decided to do a scratch build since all the changes in that time and have a nice clean system.
If it helps, this is what I install. Ssed this exact same install process for another Asrock ION330 and Acer Revo3610 (both same hardware) but neither use HDMI at all. Both VGA with either optical or analog audio. Both work with no additional config.
pacman -Sy nfs-utils screen ntp alsa-utils mlocate xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils mesa nvidia ttf-dejavu xfce4 gamin slim mythtv unrar lirc xbmc wget
Get no sound output but also zero errors on any of the following commands. I should add that the receiver does not detect any audio coming in, ie it usually identifies how many channels of audio and type it is receiving.

audio output will not work on external speakers. Internal speakers will work. What do i do to replace audio output slot
Right click your volume icon in the notification area and select "volume control options". From there, you should be able to select the external speakers.
I hope that helps!
Best of luck,
Kyle

Mac Book Pro running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 after the notebook sleeps audio and video does work (for example on YouTube). I have been able to temporarily work around this by toggling the settings on Built-in Output in Audio Midi Setup, Audio window between 2ch-20bit Integer and 2ch-24bit Integer. But this is a temporary fix until the laptop sleeps again.
When it's not working, all system sounds (emails "dings", delete file "swish", etc.) are silenced, and video playbacks on YouTube and elsewhere freeze and have no audio until the Audio Output settings are toggled then they all immediately start working.
Has anyone encountered the same? Have a long term fix for this annoyance?
I cannot upgrade the OS to 10.9 Mavericks yet because of a corporate policy - there is some conflict with 10.9 and our corporate VPN connection.Apple support article:

Help!! No AUDIO output from iMac through FW to mixing board (zed r16)
With my system stated below, I run an Allen-Heath ZED R16 board via FW. PROBLEM: I get NO Audio output to the R16 when I play iTunes or DVD/CDs in the iMac.
I DO get audio feed when I playback projects from Logic.
I have checked all System Prefs on the iMac (cahnged to the ZED); on Logic (changed to the ZED). I tried all different channels, routing, etc. NOTHING.
Can someone help?Well, the Allen-Heath support site had the answer... quite surprised and pleased!!
Have to reconfigure the iMac speakers in the Audio/Midi preferences. The details are found in this URL:
http://allen-heath.helpserve.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=238
The ZED R16 is a great board but certainly not Plug' n Play. -
Help! No Audio output In Logic Express 7
I have been running logic 7 Express with a MOTU Traveler for over a year now (with very few problems), and just this morning i have encountered a very puzzling problem. When i opened the song i was working on last night, i found that there was no audio output--just intermitant digital beeps at very high pitches (10-15k). i tried opening other songs; same problem. this problem does not occur when using the built in audio driver, so i was thinking it must be a hardware issue, but iTunes seems to output as per usual THROUGH THE MOTU so i'm really scratching my head here. hard drives etc seem to mount so the firewire port seems to be ok. i'm getting the same results (no audio playback and high digital pitches in Quicktime and Live as well...
has anyone with this setup ever experienced anything like this???!!!
thanks for reading,
dave
PowerBook G4 12" Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1.33 GHz, 1.25gb ram, MOTU TravelerCheck you preferences in LE for what you have selected for output. Also, and I am not 100% sure, because for me this is always already set, make sure each track has Output 1-2 on the channel strip. On my setup, I have my Tascam US-122 set for both input and output, then my monitor system is connected to the US-122. Now I don't recall which, but I think it was Logic that wants both input and output to be the same device. I am pretty sure, because I know I have used both in GB. Also, on my US-122, there's a switch for mono, so my recording comes in both speakers, as well as a direct monitoring switch, with a separate volume control, so I can balance my recording with the tracks I am playing to, to my liking. I am not familiar with your unit, but I'd think it'd have some similar features. Hope this helps some, anyway.
