Multiclip editing - what to do if one camera is not continuous synch?

Help!
I've got to edit a one hour show overnight. Two cameras. One camera is shooting continuous, only one stop to change tape. The second camera was stopping and starting all the way through. I synched up the clips of the start\stop camera all the way through on track two. Synched in camera one where it starts up after a tape change. So I have a timeline with the whole show, made up of two tracks of clips. Is there any way I can use the 'multiclip' editing function AFTER I've synched up the two cameras?
The only thing I can think of quickly is to export the two cameras one at a time from the edited timeline, in the same format, and create new contiguous single clips for each all the way through. Then import these new one hour clips to do multi clip editing (all the blanks filled with black slugs). I'd like to avoid all that render time. And a second generation Quicktime.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated,
Ben

I agree that the ol' split screen effect is a good way to edit multiple cameras, if you only have two cameras, it's still a bit of a waste of time. If there are only two shots from which to choose, it's a binary selection. In the olden days, I'd simply turn off the camera 2 track and razor blade out and delete all useless footage from camera 1. The holes MUST be filled by camera 2. Where there are overlapping shots, it should be easy to choose the better.
Your three camera shoot could benefit from two things:
1. A tailboard meeting where you explain why you expect each tape to roll continuously
2. Communication via walkietalkie or wireless intercom (rent them)
3. A big digital clock with seconds hung on a wall where all cameras can see it. If any camera gets stopped (it happens) or batteries die, they can shoot the clock for ten seconds to provide accurate sync..

  • CR2 files open from one camera, but not the other in CS2

Running Mac with CS2. My camera raw files shot with my lovely Canon 5D open and can be viewed in bridge and in photoshop, but NOT the camera raw from my brand new Canon powershot G9. They are both producing CR2 files. I can see the images in the bridge browser window, but when I double click to open I get a dialogue box that says, "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file." I have the 3.7 plug in installed. Please, some god or goddess of photoshop out there, show me the error of my ways!

    Walt,
I will answer your questions to the best of my ability. But hopefully others who are better at this than I am will offer their help as well. So, here goes.
    1. Everyone has their preferred method of using Bridge. In the Photoshop preferences I have not checked the box to have bridge start automatically. Although I use Bridge most of the time, there are occasions when I don't want to use it. So I prefer to start my Photoshop session by starting Bridge first, and then double-click on an image in Bridge to have it opened in Photoshop. In the Bridge preferences, I have checked the "Double-Click Edits Camera Raw Settings in Bridge", and I like working that way.
    2. I have seen several people comment about having this problem. And occasionally it will develop after you have been using Bridge/Photoshop for a while. The only thing I can suggest is for you to hold down the Ctrl key while you start Bridge. A dialogue will appear that will allow you to reset your preferences. There are three options and you should choose all three. I know, you haven't had it installed very long, but this "could" be the problem. One guy I talked with said that he had to do it several times before it fixed the problem.
    3. You indicated that you downloaded Camera Raw 4(5). What does that mean? Did you download version 4.5, which is the latest version? And, did you follow the installation instructions that were on the download page? The new plug-in must be put in the exact directory specified, replacing the old version that is already there. The old version cannot be put in a sub folder. You might as well get rid of it. You don't need it anymore. And, again, it has to go into the specific folder designated in the instructions. After you have done that, in Photoshop goto Help/About Plug-ins and click on Camera Raw. It should only be listed once, and when you click on it you should get a dialogue that will tell you what version you have installed.
    4. After I installed CS3, when I inserted a card into my card reader I was presented with the normal Windows options. One of the options I was given was to download using Bridge. I chose that option and indicated to always use that option. I haven't had any problems with it since. But if that option isn't there, you can open Bridge and click on the File menu. There is an option to download images from your camera. It has worked well for me.

  • IPod Touch not recognized by ITunes, but IPhone is. What can cause only one device to not be recognized?

I have tried reinstalling ITunes and resetting my IPod Touch. The computer recognizes the IPod Touch as a connected device, but ITunes doesn't. However, ITunes will recognize other devices that I plug in with the same usb cord. ITunes diagonistics only says that no device is plugged in whenever the IPod Touch is plugged in. What can cause this combination of problems, and how could I get around it?

If you have iTunes 11 on the computer and are using the same cable that works with the iPhone then:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Try on another computer
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware preoblem

  • How can I use ALL audio tracks in multiclip editing?

I want to be able to use all audio tracks after the multiclip cut.
It's only a two camera shoot, but I want to be able to use the ambient room sound from the second camera ... and control its level (in relation to the master audio track on the first camera) AFTER the cuts are made.
Is this possible in multiclip editing? And how does one go about it?
Apologies. I've spent an hour or so in the manual, and it isn't clear ... or I'm just not finding the right reference.
    All ears,
    Ben

Sorry if I'm steering you down a path you don't want to go or even if there's a better way but I wouldn't be ding complex audio mixing anywhere near the multiclip interface. Export your reference movie or nest the multiclip project into another sequence, bring in your additional tracks, get to work. Just my preferences, I put a bunch of rough keyframes in the audio tracks and enter some markers (and make a lot of paper notes). Then I go back using the large mixer window to do the fine tweaking.
Stick around for a couple of days, some other multiclip users with more experience than I will offer some more useful suggestions.

  • Mac Pro 8-core too slow for Multiclip editing

I have a Mac Pro 8core (pre-Nehalem), with 4 gb of memory. I'm doing some multiclip editing, and even with RT set to the lowest preview quality, my system stills blocks from time to time. I don't want to invest in a RAID-system, because I don't do multiclip editing that often. Is there an other - not expensive - way to speed up my Mac? Would adding memory - say to 6 gb - help?
I also have the impression that since I upgraded to Leopard Snow, the computer is much less stable. FCP shut down twice unexpectedly yesterday.

You don't say what format of HD you're editing but the fluidity of playing multiclip sequences is really dependent on the system's ability to provide all the streams of video in a timely manner. This means hard drive throughput is essential. A good quality sata drive in a MacPro can read somewhere around 115 MB/sec when empty. It will spool material less effectively as it fills.
Very good quality esata RAID systems can provide 5x that - which is why people utilize them. (fwiw-I've run 16 streams of 720p24 DVCProHD off of a Caldigit HDOne in a multiclip sequence without a hiccup. )
What can you do if you don't want to pay the price for the right gear for the job?
    1. populate all your internal bays with fast hard drives
    2. empty the drives
    3. spread your captured files across all three (non system drives)
This will distribute the load as much as possible without going to a RAID setup.
Once you have all the drives empty, you could try setting up a RAID 0 set using Disk Utility and see if that works for you. One caveat - if you decide to go the internal software RAID 0 route, recognize there is no failsafe should you encounter a serious system crash. Everything on all drives that are part of the RAID set can be compromised.
    Good luck,

  • Editing out one camera angle

I have the unfortunate problem that I have 5 camera angles (where the brightness levels stay approximately similar frame to frame, but are different between cameras) on one video stream (avi), ie camera 1 is on for a few frames, then camera 2 is on for a few frames etc (although the order in which they come changes.
I was wondering is there are a way to filter out just one camera angle (ie select multiple frames by brightness (or other) and then copy and paste them somewhere else).
I hope you understand what I am getting at. Essentially selecting a set of frames by its properties.
    Many Thanks.
    Ed
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Ed,
just to make sure I understand. You have imported an .avi file into FCP. And this clip is, a couple of seconds/minutes long. And you have a couple of seconds from camera 1, then a cut to camera 2, then a cut to camera 3 etc.....?
If that is the case, then nope, you can't do what you would like to do. (Hm, sounds like my parents when I was little....). Only thing you can do is go through the clip frame by frame, setting In and Out points and edit the smaller bits into the timeline. You could work with different timelines, one for each camera angle. Then you could either nest those clips or use the sequences themselves in a new sequence.
    Hope this makes sense?
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • Multiclip Editing-The Viewer

Sorry if this has been addressed in previous topics.
I am editing a multiclip in the Timeline. The big problem I can't seem to resolve is that my Viewer will not show 4-up when I play and edit the Timeline. The Canvas and Viewer each display the identical clip. When I pause or stop, the Viewer will then show the 4 up. I have changed the playhead sync to "Open" and also enabled Multiclip Playback in the Timeline RT pop-up as indicated in the tutorials, but this does not solve the problem.
    Could sure use some suggestions.
    rgr

I too have had this very frustrating problem, and have repeatedly made sure that sync was open, played around with different playback options - in other words taken all the logical steps, read through the manual many times, etc. The especially frustrating part is that this is in sequences that previously worked - i.e., the sequence was playing correctly with "3 up", or 3 cameras showing in the viewer - and then for no apparent reason, only one camera (the active one) would show.
The only thing that worked for me, after much experimentation with starting new projects, new sequences, and even reloading the Final Cut software, was to change my user settings on the G5, and log in as a new user. What I ended up doing was logging out under my administrator account and creating a new account, then opening my Final Cut project in my new account on the G5 - and it seems to have worked. Possibly something got corrupt in my user settings; I don't know.
It's a terribly inelegant solution, and I would welcome some other thoughts for a better option. In the meantime, if this helps anyone as a "work-around" if you're banging your head against the wall as I was on this problem, then great.
As an Avid editor for many years, when the system started doing something quirky like this I would have trashed my Avid user settings and logged into Media Composer as a different user. Since Final Cut doesn't ask for a User name when you open the software, as Avid does, it seems like changing your user settings at the G5 is sort of the next best thing. Ideally there should be a way to correct User corruptions from within the Final Cut environment. If such a method exists, I am not aware of it.

  • One camera of three not syncing into color from FCP

Running lastest version of everything on imac 2 ghz intel core 2 duo 2 gb memory. Useing multi-sync to edit three camera shoot shot on vx 200 with p2 cards. Edit is great. One camera goes out of sync by a lot when importing to color.
tried export each clip from this camera and reimporting qt back into sequence. This worked expect, the clip got squished going into color.. didn't stay at HD settings, probably a pixel issue. Tried reexport using pro-res 422 HD 960x720 24p which was our camera setting.
This works but sometimes but not all the time. I get a render error "can't find capture card".
The camera that goes out of sync is in two parts, thus the multi-clips had to be
resynced... this shouldn't be an issue with xml as it's reading the time code unless the timecode is the same on both clips...hmmm...

    From the Release Notes:
"Known Issues Affect Sequences Containing Multiclips That Are Sent to Color
Sequences that contain multiclips have known issues that affect Final Cut Pro to Color round trips."
Color does not like multiclips. Too bad the forum search function is disabled as solutions have been offered up, I just can't remember them currently as I rarely touch the FCP multiclip function.

  • I opened and edited a pic from my Olympus camera onto my mac (not in iPhoto).  I zoomed in

I opened and edited a pic from my Olympus camera onto my mac (not in iPhoto).  I zoomed in and rotated the pictures and when I tried to click out of them, I got a message that the file was locked because I hadn't used it recently and "If you want to make changes to this document, click Unlock. To keep the file unchanged and work with a copy, click Duplicate."  I clicked "unlock" and then another message came up with the options of OK, Cancel, or Revert.  If I hit OK, I couldn't go back to my original picture.  I clicked OK.
Then later I tried to open the picture in iPhoto and it doesn't recognize it, even though it is still a JPEG file.  It still shows on my camera, but shows as a bland square in iPhoto.  Have I lost the ability to open it in iPhoto?  Will I be able to go to a store and print it out from my camera?

No one can answer that since you only provide problems and questions
we need to know exactly what you have, what you did and what happened including exact error messages

  • Multiclip editing does not update Canvas window with active angle

    Hi,
I am trying to do some multiclip editing but for some reason when cutting between angles the canvas viewer does not update with the video. Once I stop playback the cuts are all created properly and the video changes when playing back again. However, when editing the video does not change to the active angle. The audio changes but the video does not.
I have the multiclip playback setting in RT enabled and the canvas and viewer windows synced and matching each other when playing back, and video + audio is set in the sync menu.
I'm now stuck! and would greatly appreciate some help.
    Thanks
    Phil

    Welcome to the family.
I don't mean to brush you off because I understand your frustration. But what we know about mutliclip is that it really does work, if you follow the rules completely. We also know that most of the "multiclip doesn't work" posts are resolved by encouraging the user to be objective and to simply recheck the setup steps in the manual, one at a time. (Editorially speaking: There are too many of them, there are too many stupid gotchas in the multiclip setup. True. Hope springs eternal that FCP6 may fix many of these things. It should be a one-click solution.)
You can search for multiclip here and, after filtering out the nonsense from elitists like me, you should be able to detect something in your configuration that might be keeping you from getting the performance you are expecting.

  • Multiclip editing not cutting, Markers dissappear when stop playing

Im doing a multiclip edit for the first time and im having issues!
I have the 3 angles i need set up and sync in a multiclip and can get it playing fine ie viewer has the 3 angles playing at once and select angle is showing in the canvas. I play the clip and begin to add cut points (by clicking on angle when i want to change to it) a marker appears in the timeline as it should but when i stop playing all the markers disappear and im back to square-one again!!!!
As far as i can tell the setting are correct, i have the viewer set to open and multiclip playback enabled and all looks great it just wont insert the cut points!!!
    PLEASE HELP!

I'm no longer using 5.x, but I remember some odd bug with multiclips doing only a Switch to (instead of a Cut to) which results in the behavior you're mentioning: the markers disappearing as soon as you stop playback. I believe the issue was either related to being in a customized, but unsaved custom keyboard layout.
I guess what I'm saying is: does going to Tools > Keyboard Layout and selecting either layout (Default or Multiclip) affect the issue?

  • Subclip timecode issues for MultiClip edit...Help!?!?

Here is the issue. 2 camera shoot, Cameraman 1 pushed pause during a live concert video shoot.
In order to make a multiclip edit with the other camera's footage, I have made subclips of this camera's footage on each side of the pause.
The other camera in the shoot had issues as well so I have been forced to use a sequence and alternant timecodes to line everything up with my sound file.
Everything works well until I get to the subclip after the pause. I try to modify the alternant timecode to correspond with the sequence timecode but when I enter the approporate number FCP forces a different number to appear.
My hunch is that because these are subclips of the same captured clip I am not able to modify the timecode as I want to. Can anyone confirm this hunch?
And...what can I do about this? Do I have to recapture? I hope not. I have tried to create a new master clip in the modify window but the problem persists. I am so close to getting this into the multicam editor I can taste it. Thanks.

Solved it... I ended up having to re-capture the shot after the pause so it would be a seperate media file. I guess I could have copied the file outside of FCP, renamed and imported the file seperatly... I realize this problem was caused by not setting the capture up properly to treat the jump in time code appropriately.

  • Fine-tuning multiclip edits

I've created a multiclip with footage from 2 cameras at a concert. The two angles are synced, and once I figured out how to switch between the cameras while playing back, I was able to make a rough edit of the entire show easily.
Now, though, I want to fine-tune the cuts and I am at a loss as to how to do this. I am an FCP newbie and it doesn't seem that any of the edit types available (slide, ripple, etc.) are appropriate for a multiclip. I need to make precise adjustments of the points where the video goes from one camera to the next.
    Any suggestions?

If you collapse the multiclip (Choose Modify > Collapse Multiclip(s)) the clips become the same as if they weren't mulitclips.
