Multiclip goes viarable speed on me

I have used multiclip successfully for the ceremony (2 cameras). Now, I've selected the same raw clips, set in points, clicked 'create multiclip' and bring it into the timeline and the speed is playing at like 90% (says variable) after the clip name. Tried changing the speed, no luck. Checked the speed of the origianl clips... 100%. Why, why, why? Tried copying original clips to make new masterclips, same results. Tried setting in and out points for the multiclip. Tried setting in only. Always the same result.
Ed

I tried those instructions. I did this specifically.
Unplug the Unit
* Remove the Battery
* Push the CUDA (PMU) Switch (count to 5 slow)
* Push the Start button on the front of the computer (count to 5 slow)
* Let the unit sit for 15-30 minutes
* Replace the Battery
* Plug it back in, and push the start button
Except I let it sit several hours
I'm gonna try it again but I saw this...
2. Press the PMU reset switch (S1) once on the logic board. Do not press the PMU reset switch a second time because it could stop the PMU chip from responding.
It's possible I did something like this wrong before i came here for help. I know I pressed the PMU before I made this post. If the PMU chip did stop responding is there any hope?

  • New MBA and external monitor - fan is going full speed

I just got a brand new MBA 13". When I connected via a DVI adapter to my Viewsonic 19" monitor the fan kicked into high gear and hasn't slowed since.
I am using it in dual-screen mode with both screens open, and I even have my MBA on an iLap stand to dissipate heat. The CPU temp is 77C.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the need for the fan to run full blast? Would switching to a VGA connection help? What about a different monitor (this one is 5 years old).
    Thanks in advance!

There's a program in your applications folder called 'Activity Monitor' that you should check out. Sounds like there's a process maxing out your cpu when you plug in the monitor and that tool would show if that's true and what the process might be. You may have to select 'All Processes' at the top by the filter field and sort by cpu activity so the busiest comes to the top.
I have the 11 inch 1.6/4gb plugged in all day into a 24 inch, 1920x1200 lcd over dvi with both displays active at once and a 3x3 grid of spaces active (makes 18 virtual windows with the external plugged in.) and the fan is almost always at it's minimum (2000rpms) with the cpu temp just a little over where it would be at idle and the bottom only slightly warm. By the end of the day I'll have like a dozen term windows open, multiple word documents, excel, outlook, communicator, many many safari tabs/windows going, itunes, active vpn back home, 3 parallels vm's (win7, ubuntu, oracle 10g appliance), twitter, ical, apple mail, etc... and well you get the point, obviously this is a just a lowly netbook designed for light browsing! At this point the memory is maxed out and I'm using about 6GBs of swap space but the air is still silent and fast.

  • My USB Drive goes half speed on Arch

    Dear Archers:
I have a problem when running my USB hard drive (of 1 TB) on my Arch laptop. For some reason, the drive, which is a USB 3.0, copies files from the external to the internal drive at about 30 MB/s. Doing the "same" task with the "same" files on the "same" USB 3 port on the "same" laptop on other Debian-based distros results in a transfer rate of 60 - 100 MB/s. Am I missing some package to run at full speed with my Arch system?
Another thing that I've also noticed is that there's a delay of more than 1 minute when I try to mount the drive. This doesn't happen on other distros.
Any hint or suggestions are welcome!
    Thanks in advance

Ok guys. An annoying update here.
The problem with this external drive achieved a new level of difficulty for me. Yesterday the problems were a slow mount (over a minute) and slow transfer rates for both writing and reading data. Today I got back home and tried to plug the drive once again and the freaking thing just won't mount at all!. The hard drive appears in the list of detected devices and on my file manager, but when I click on it to open the folder and get it to mount, the complete file manager freezes. I have to unplug it and try again. I have to repeat these steps something like four or five times in order to see the content (I was really really scared when I experienced this because I thought the drive was broken, but I tried it in another PC and everything was showing correctly).
I'm starting to get desesperate...I constantly write data to back it up for job purposes. Hopefully I'll solve this thing, or you guys can throw some more technical help at me.
In case it matters: The external drive is a USB 3.0 (brand Verbatim) of 1 TB, I keep the default filesystem that drive was using as factory default (I think is NTFS). I have Arch Linux updated as of today, with the latest stable packages. I run Arch with Ubuntu's Unity in UEFI mode as the only OS. I tried other file managers as well including KDE's Dolphin, Thunar, PCManFM and Nemo but no avail.

  • GT70-2OC-408US Fan goes to max speed when idle

Just as the title says. The main fan goes to maximum speed when the computer is left idle overnight. Putting the computer in to sleep mode or restarting the machine solves the issue but that is quite annoying. This happened on both the stock install of windows 7 home edition and after I did a full wipe and re-install of windows 7 ultimate. I have looked at the bios update section and there are 2 bios updates for windows 7 but I do not know which one to use and there isn't much documentation with on it. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Hi I have a similar problem, the fan goes full speed from time to time when idle or when using youtube, facebook, etc. And the FAN will never slowdown again until i turn off the laptop or put it to sleep. What I have noticed is that the integrated video card runs hotter that the 770m discrete card not sure if that's the one triggering the fan at full speed.
I found a post about a fan controller for a msi gt70 2od laptop and it works, it truly modifies the fan speed, but not sure how good that is, because if the fan is being activated because of the card getting hotter and the fan is set to 10 or 20% it may not be enough to cool it down and keep the temperature at safe levels at least while leaving the laptop on all night long unattended.
hxxp://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/718530-official-msi-gt70-2od-owners-lounge.html (Dave Pearson's GT70 2OD FAN CONTROL v1.2, and photos of this can be seen)
BTW the fan started to work at full speed after I installed windows 7 ultimate 64 bits and continue to work this way even when I went back to Windows Home Premium 64 bits. Also a 8GB ram module was added to this laptop.
If you were able to solve this issue please post the solution here, so everybody is aware on how to solve this issue.

  • Massive Disk Speed Improvement Plan

I am moving forward with a disk storage speed improvement plan using my Dell Precision T5400 workstation as the test bed.
Specifically, my goal is to create a super fast 2 TB drive C: from four OCZ Vertex 3 480GB SATA3 SSD drives in RAID 0 configuration.  This will replace an already fast RAID 0 array made from two Western Digital 1TB RE4 drives.
So far I have ordered two of these fast SSD drives, along with what is touted to be a very good value in high performance SATA3 RAID controllers, a Highpoint 2420SGL.  I'll get started with this combination and get to know it first as a data drive before trying to make it bootable.
Getting any kind of hard information online about putting SSDs into RAID is a bit like pulling teeth, so I'm not 100% confident that these parts will work perfectly together, but I think the choice of SSD drives is the right one.  I had briefly considered a PCIe RevoDrive SSD card made by OCZ, but was just too esoteric...  I'm actually getting double the storage this way for the same price, I can swap to a different RAID controller if need be, and these drives can easily be ported to any new workstation I may get in the future.
Notably, some early concerns with using SSD in RAID configurations (and things like TRIM commands) have already been alleviated, as the drives are now quite intelligent in their internal "garbage collection" processes.  I've verified this with the engineers at OCZ.  They have said that with these modern SSD drives you really don't have to worry about them being special - just use them as you would a normal drive.
Once I get the first two SSDs set up in RAID 0 I'll specifically do some comparisons with saving large files and also using the array as the Photoshop scratch drive, vs. the spinning 1 TB drive I have in that role now.
Assuming all goes well, I'll then add the additional two SSDs to complete the four drive array.  After a quick test of that, I'll see if I can restore a Windows System Image backup made from my 2 TB C: (spinning drive) array, which (if it works) will let me hit the ground running using the same exact Windows setup, just faster.
My current C: drive, made from two Western Digital 1 TB RE4 drives, delivers about 210 MB/sec throughput with very large files, with 400 MB/sec bursts with small files (these drives have big caches).  Where they fall down dismally (by comparison to SSD) is operations involving seeking...  The PassMark advanced "Workstation" benchmark generates random small accesses such as what you might see during real work (and I can hear the drives seeking like crazy) results in a meager 4 MB/sec result.
My current D: drive, a single Hitachi 1 TB spinning drive, clocks in at about 100 MB/sec for large reads/writes.
The SSD array should push the throughput up at least 5x as compared to my current drive C: array, to over 1 GB/sec, but the biggest gain should be with random small accesses (no seek time in an SSD), where I'm hoping to see at leasdt a 25x improvement to over 100 MB/second.  That last part is what's going to speed things up from an every day usage perspective.
I imagine that when the dust settles on this build-up, I'll end up pointing virtually everything at drive C:, including the Photoshop scratch file, since it will have such a massively fast access capability.  It will be interesting to experiment.  I suppose I'll have to come up with some gargantuan panoramas to stitch in order to force Photoshop to go heavily to the scratch drive for testing.
I'll let you all know how it works out, and I'll be sure and do before/after comparisons of real use scenarios (big files in Photoshop, and various other things).  Perhaps fully my "real world" results can help others looking to get more Photoshop performance out of their systems understand what SSD can and can't do for them.
I welcome your thoughts and experiences.
    -Noel

Not sure who might be following this thread, but I have executed the final phase of this plan, restoring a system backup from my spinning drive array onto the new 4 drive SSD array.
All went off without a hitch, I have my same system configuration including all apps and everything just as it was, except everything is now MUCH faster.
The 4 drive array achieves a staggering 1.74 gigabytes/second sustained throughput rate.
Windows 7 WEI score is 7.9 for the Primary hard disk category.
Windows boots up quickly, everything starts immediately, nothing bogs the system down, and just overall everything feels very fluid and snappy.  And there is no seeking noise from the drives.
Regarding what this has done for Photoshop...  I've only tested on Photoshop CS6 beta so far today, but everything is incrementally improved.  Startup time is faster, things seem more smooth and fluid while editing overall, and a benchmark I created using an action to run a lot of image adjustment operations on a big, multi-layer image ran this long to completion:
When the file is opened from (and the Photoshop scratch file is on) a single spinning disk:
    4 minutes 26 seconds (266 seconds)
When the file is opened from (and the scratch file was is on) a fast array of spinning drives:
    3 minutes 45 seconds (225 seconds)
When the entire system is run from the SSD array:
    2 minutes 31 seconds (151 seconds)
During the action, because so many steps are performed on the big file, Photoshop writes a 30+ gigabyte scratch file on the scratch drive.
    Summary
Clearly the very fast disk access markedly improves Photoshop's speed when it uses scratch space.
Plus copying big image files around is virtually instantaneous.
I don't use Bridge myself, but I have noticed that all the image thumbnails (via FastPictureViewer Codec Pack) just show up immediately in Explorer windows and Photoshop File Open/Save dialogs.  We can only assume this kind of drive speed would really make Bridge blaze through its operations as well.
Following my footsteps would be expensive, but it can really work.

  • 24" iMac 2.4GHz Fan Speed

    Hi,
I recently purchased a 24" Intel iMac 2.4GHz. Forunately I haven't experienced any crashing or freezing problems like some users have, but what I have noticed is that the fan(s) seem to speed up quite significantly for no apparent reason when the machine is idle.
When the computer is doing absolutely nothing sitting at 32 degrees, the fans speed increases from around 1200rpm up to about 3300rpm.
Can anybody tell me if this is normal for the 24" iMacs? I used to own a previous revision 20" iMac and I hardly ever heard the fans kick in. It wouldn't normally bother me, but the fact that it makes a lot of noise is kind of annoying.
I have updated to 1.1 with no joy. Currently I am using iStat Pro via Dashboard to read my system performace.
    Thanks,

    Elusive,
Any luck finding an answer? I have a similar problem.
My Hard Drive fan is running 5000-5500rpm all the time.
I've followed the instructions for resetting the SMC:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
But this did not help. It seemed to get progressively worse. At first going full speed only occasionally, then after around an hour of use, then less. As of tonight it comes on when I turn on the machine (after being unplugged for several minutes) and stays on at the >5000rpm speeds.
If you find a solution, let us know.
    Thanks,
    jp

  • Do the fans speed up when running Apple Service Diagnostic?

When i run apple service diagnostic cd (2.5.8) the fans really speed up and don't slow down so after a few minutes i stop the testing, is this normal?. It seems like it is the rear fans that are going full speed, can't tell if any of the other fans are speeding up or not, i stop the testing after a few minutes as i don't know if this is normal or not and don't want to cause any damage.

Unless you bathe the computer in helium gas, I doubt if the fans will run faster than their designed speed even full bore.
The helium gas relates to a war story told by my motors and transformers prof "way back when" of a cooling fan in a nuclear facility where the atmosphere in the containment vessel was helium for whatever reason. The fan was powered by a universal motor which had nameplate voltage applied to it. The thing that limits the universal is turning resistance, and helium, being less dense in that environment, provided much less resistance to the fan blades, thus allowing the fan to overspeed and then disintegrate from the resulting centrifugal force. From that, I learned that interdisciplinary engineering teams really do need to talk to each other on a constant basis. Plus, I guess I learned a valuable lesson if I ever decided to build my backyard nuke.

  • Improve encoding speed for WMV output?

    Hi,
Firstly, apologies if I am posting this in the incorrect area of the forums. I'm not entirely sure it's a hardware issue, I think it might be codec related.
I am trying to find a way to reduce encoding times for a (on average) 4 minute clip using Premiere/AME CS5
My input format is either XDCAM HD or IMX50, my output formate is always wmv, 720x 576 (PAL) interlaced, currently single pass encoding (because of the time taken) using the Windows Media Encoder (wmvencod.dll).
There are no effects, nor transistions in my sequence. 2 tracks of video - 1 actual video, the second a logo overlay. 1 stereo pair for the audio.
Hardware is a single Intel Xeon, quad core 2.5Ghz processor, currently with 10Gb memory. I have tried doubling up on the processors and also increasing the memory up to 16Gb but the improvements are marginal. Switching hyperthreading off also provides a marginal improvement in encoding time.
I am running this on a server class 1u box. Currently it only has the standard vga server graphics card in it. I have mixed feelings about installing a graphics card as I have read conflicting information about whether it will provide an improvement in my encoding time.
I don't think MPE is relevant, given that I'm not doing any effects processing. Will the CUDA architecture provide a significant improvement?
I can only find 2 graphics cards that I think will fit in the box and these are the Quadro 4000 and Quadro FX 3800 that retail at around £650 - £800 + so it's a significant punt if they aren't going to provide an improvement.
In essence, I have a template (well a couple of) project that I add the source file to each time that gets dropped into AME for encoding. For HD source encoding takes about 4 times real time. For SD it's about real time.
If I chose a different output format, with the same input format eg h264 or DV (avi) then the encoding time is reduced to roughly 1/3rd of what I am experiencing at the moment. That gives me the impression that the wmv encoder is the bottle neck
Are there alternatives to using the standard Microsoft WMV encoder? If so, how do I go about getting AME to use them, given that prior to installing Media Player I didn't even have wmv as an export option.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I couldn't tell you whether or not it uses the same dlls as the Microsoft program... that's getting deeper under the hood than I usually go! :-) If it is, then you're correct in that going to an intermediate and using WME isn't going to speed up your process.
For more info on hardware, go to www.ppbm5.com and look at the test results page... see what folks were using who got the higher results. IIRC, your specific processor (even in its dual form) is a rather poor performer with this kind of stuff, and the Core i7 line is much better.
Out of my own curiosity, I'm running a test on my system to see if I can reproduce the similarly long encode times with WMV versus h.264. I've got a 4:23 AVCHD clip which I'm rendering first using h.264 MainConcept to PAL DV Widescreen HQ (the only reason I'm using PAL here isbecause that's what you're using, and I wondered if it would go differently than NTSC... I've never used PAL before). The full encoding time for that in h.264 was about 1:45, so a little better than double real time. The same clip, rendered with WMV using PAL Widescreen source to HQ Download is taking about 3:15, so pretty much double the h.264 clip's time, but still better than realtime, and nowhere near the results you're getting.
I don't remember what you said your HD setup was like, but make sure you've got multiple hard drives, preferably a RAID for your data disk. I learned that having a good disk configuration can really make a lot of difference, all other things being equal!

  • ITS GOING CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently got married and for a wedding gift because of being such a nerd(LOL) my wife got me a K7N2G-L for a wedding gift. I loved it however, ever since I received it and set it up the system clock goes super speed most of the time. The clock can gain as much as 100 yrs in a 24 hr period.
What I have done. I have replaced the cmos battery. I have reset the defaults in bios. I have shorted out the cmos to clear it. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled OS several times.
I would GREATLY appreciate any help with this that can be offered. My wife is starting to feel real bad for getting me a broken gift and I dont want her to feel this way any more. So i have broken down and asked for help.............

Are you running win98? XP? Full install or upgrade?
    What is your processor? Speed?
How about making a list of all peripherals and stuff.List it in a signature like the one below.
    I am running 2000server. Full install. An AMD socket 478? 1800+? I think. 512 DDR Ram with 2 HD's 8Gbyte and 40Gbyte.
Also if I turn off the computer, and turn it back on within 30 minutes the clock continues at the pace previous meaning more tha 30 minutes will have elasped. But if I turn it off for more than 30 minutes it resets itself to 1-1-02 EVERYTIME. That makes me wonder.............

  • Fan's going all out, help!!

I've been playing TuxKart r1682 on my MacBook 2.4Ghz. and the fan goes full speed after a few minutes of play. Anyone knows why? Is this a permanent change in the computer or will it go away by simply deleting this game?

It most likely is the game. I play chess, and that fairly winds up the Fans also. But be sure the Comp. is on a level surface, using it, on a bed, or some other soft surface, can cause overheating. Do the fans go back to normal, when you stop playing the game? If so, don't worry about it, but if that persists, then you need to have it checked out. Good luck.

  • Cluster vs speed

To begin, I've searched the forum.
I have 2 dual 1Gs with latest software on both. To run Compressor on a 1-hour video takes forever, as so many others have mentioned in the forum.
Is clustering really going to speed up the process that much if I use both to process a job? What if I have a 3rd? I'm just wondering if the hassle of connecting the two or even thre machines will make that much difference. I, too, suffer from backlog when I have to wait up to 20 hours for a video to compress.
I've tried exporting from the timeline, which seems to work fine, and I've also exported a DV file from FCP to process the job as a self-contained file. Neither seems to change the processing speed dramatically.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks much!
    Michael

this particualr question i would repost in the QMaster forum. they seem to have down compressor and Qmaster clusters (nodes).
not to familiar with this process myself

  • Does upgrading to a larger harddrive increases the speed of your computer?

    Hi,
I was wondering if increasing the size of your harddrive is going to speed up your computer?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

Tough question that depends on several factors. First is how full was your old drive, the closer it comes to capacity the slower that makes your computer. As a general rule of thumb OS X should have a minimum of 10% free disk space to operate OK. Next is the RPM speed of the drive drives, you can buy hard disks that spin at 5,400, 7,200 & 10,000 RPM, the faster the RPM the quicker the input/output. Theoretically if you replace a 7,200 RPM drive with a 10,000 RPM drive that will speed up the input / output.
So if you are replacing a drive that is currently filled to 70% capacity that spins at 7,200 RPM with a larger capacity 7,200 RPM drive then no you probably won't notice any difference in performance. However if you are replacing a drive that is at 90% capacity that spins at 7,200 RPM with a higher capacity 10,000 RPM drive then yes you will probably see some performance increase.
Bottom line, not simple question to answer.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Speeding Up Final Cut Pro

I just purchased my first Mac about 2 months ago and I want to speed up rendering. I am taking a class in Final Cut Pro at a local college and learning a lot. I have been using ULEAD (Windows Based 32 bit)for about 2-3 years and have a lot of raw AVI files I need to convert to MOV. Most of the files are 1440 X 1920 resolution. Is there a way to speed up the conversion? At the rate it is converting I am better off just uploading the footage off of the DV tapes. It is taking 20 minutes to render 5 minutes worth of footage. With 6 gigs of 800MHz RAM I would think it should smoke through rendering.
    Clark

Clark: What are you rendering to? I mean, are you manipulating these clips or just trying to play them--no filters, effects, slo-mo etc.? If you are required to render only placing them in the timeline you may want to change your timeline settings. Are you ouputting HD? What is the CODEC? (AVI is a container, like QT, not a CODEC.) Use "Item Properties / Command+9" to find out. Set the timeline settings as close to your original footage as possible--ideally matching exactly (in which case there is no rendering whatsoever).
And, in general, the CPU and GPU are going to speed up your renders. Big RAM certainly does't hurt you, but lots of RAM on a slow machine won't help much. You could also look into QMaster if you have extra machines available.

  • Problem with Battery and Keyboard Light

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong section. This is my first time on these forums.
Just today I was skyping my girlfriend on my Macbook Pro (that I got in the summer or 2010). I have SmcFanControl installed and I regularly use it to monitor/increase my fan speed. As I regularly skype and play WoW on this computer, my computer temp often sits around 160-170 degrees F.
Today it was at around 170 and I had it on my lap. I sat up and jostled the computer a little and it shut off. The power cord light, which was green, immediately turned off. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in and it stayed off. The computer wouldnt restart for about 30 seconds. Finally after hitting the power button several times it turned on.
It worked fine for 10 or so minutes. I assumed I just moved it too suddenly, although I have never had a problem with that before. Then, I moved again and it shut off AGAIN. It took another 30 seconds to register the power cord and to turn on.
This time, when it booted up, it said my clock was set to a date before 2008, althought it was still at Feb 16, 2011. Also, as soon as I turned it on, the fans were going full speed (as loud as when i have SmcFanControl set at 6200 rpm). I opened SmcFancontrol and it says my computer's temp is at 32 Degrees F and 000 rpm, which I know is not correct. I can't change the speed of the fans and the temp of the computer hasnt changed at all.
Also, my battery icon has an X through it and says "No batteries available" "Power Source: Power Adapter." The green light is very dim on the charger.
AND on top of this, my keyboard lights no longer turn on, even pushing F5 and F6. I am in a dim room so they should auto turn on.
I am afraid that I may have overheated the computer, but I was wondering if anyone has any advice. I was thinking of opening the back up but I dont have a small enough screwdriver at the momment. I also tried doing the "top -u -s3" command to check cpu% and my highest one is Firefox around 10-15%.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm thinking this is gonna require a look at the Apple Store, however I am an out of state college student and I'm not returning home for another week and I need my computer for assignments.
Sorry for the wall of text. Thanks in advance.
P.S. My computer is up to date.

SMC reset works best with anything that relies on power for the machine. When it comes to batteries SMC reset and PRAM usually do the trick. Also a lot of people miss this, do not plug on the top plugs use the lower plug.
As for the temperature on the lap, expect a lot of heat, the computers are designed to lay on flat SOLID surfaces. The underbelly on aluminum chassis laptops act as a heatsink. In addition the rubber feet keep the product high enough so air can pass through and help cool the system.
As far as the adapter you can have AppleCare send you without waiting a week for it. If it is an obvious hardware problem they may do an exception for you if you are out of phone support. Highly recommend APP for the phone support. You would have a battery on it's way to your current location in a couple days!
