Multiclip issues in fcp 7

i have had this issue dor a while now i cant describe very well whats happening so i made a screen recording of whats happening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUQQqeoWNRw

Looks like you have a couple of issues. First of all you should transcode your .mp4 files into ProRes .MOVs. I'm assuming they're straight off a Flip cam or similar type of camera? You also probably shot interlaced, and the footage just needs to be deinterlaced. That can be done at the same time when you transcode them to ProRes. The easiest way probably is to use something like Mpeg Streamclip, drag the mp4s into the batch window and do a conversion to ProRes and be sure to check "deinterlace." You should be good to go from there.

  • Multiclip issues trying to mix SD & HD footage.

I shot 3 cameras, two in SD and a master shot in HDV of a play. I am trying to use the Multiclip feature in FCP 6.0.5.
It states in the manual that I can make a multiclip out "anything" but I have hit the issue that it will only make a multiclip out of footage shot in the same codec! So I took my HDV footage and put it into a SD timeline and then discovered FCP wont make a multiclip using a Sequence Timeline either!
I wanted to use the wideshot in HD as a mastershot that I could cut too when the other two closeup cameras had missed an actor (as there are 13 on stage) and be able to zoom into the HD frame to provide closeups.
Can anyone suggest a workaround to these issues?
    Thx
    Kevin

So I down converted my HD clip to SD and now I can create a Multiclip. Thx
Next problem is, one of the cameras angles has been shot darker than the others. So I appled a brightness filter to the clip in the browser so it would apply to the whole shot and this does not transfer to the Multiclip version. So I re-generated the Multiclip with the filter applied to the clip and again does not carry over! Definetly discovering some major limitationns of the Multiclip feature!

  • .mov issue in FCP

    Hello,
I am working with .mov files that I exported out of an animation program. For some reason when I play the files in FINAL CUT STUDIO, FCP seems to do something with the layers. It's as if it alters them somewhat... for example if I have some writing on a wall in the animation, and the wall is white, it appears black in FCS.
Is this a setting issue in FCP?
    Thank you for your help,
    Evan Jacobs

sounds like in your animation program you had the background set White, whereas in FCP you have it set Black ... consequently in FCP your animation's alpha channel (transparency) shows as black
try this ... select the clip, then choose Modify > Alpha Type > White

  • I'm having several multiclip issues.

Hello - I'm hoping someone with more knowledge than myself about FCP 7's multiclip function could help. I shot an acoustic duo performing the same song (the song was pumped through speakers as they played along with it) and did about 11 takes. This enabled me to get some wide shots, close shots, guitar shots, etc. The shot was done with a Canon Vixia HF S100 & Vixia HF S10. Same modes, same everything.
    First Issue:
When I drag more than 4 clips to the timline, it's asking to render. Why? It doesn't matter which clips I bring in, if they are more than 4, it asks to render.
    Second Issue:
When I use PluralEyes to sync, it syncs the clips fine. Again, it's asking me to render!?
    Third Issue
I then drag the newly created multiclip file into the "Multiclip" sequence. Here's the real frustrating part. In order to play all of the clips and select which camera angle I want (thereby creating a marker on the timeline for editing), it will not play the multiclip files IF I have more than 5 clips. It just shows one clip and/or a window that says UNRENDERED.
What am I doing wrong? If I do this with 5 or less clips, no issue, however, if I do it with 6 clips, I get the below issue:
Here's how it looks with 5 clips! (which works)

    >When I drag more than 4 clips to the timline, it's asking to render. Why? It doesn't matter which clips I bring in, if they are more than 4, it asks to render.
Well, that's not how you do Multiclip in FCP.  It is ONE way, but not the way to use MULTICLIP.  Look in the manual for that.  What you are doing now is STACKING the clips.  Now, what will make the renders go away...FAST STORAGE.  It is needing you to render because whatever drive you have this footage stored on, can only play back so many streams of video...layers of video...at the same time.  It will hit a wall.  eSATA...MiniSAS...those are faster options.  You will not get 11 streams with firewire.  And it seems you have issues with four....
    >When I use PluralEyes to sync, it syncs the clips fine. Again, it's asking me to render!?
Ah...yes, PluralEyes will stack.  And the reason you have to render is what I stated above.  Media Drive speed.
Third issue...same thing.  Drive speed.  That's your bottleneck.

  • Display issues in FCP X on my MBP

    Hi there,
I downloaded FCP X from the App Store this week and installed it and I am having a lot of display issues. My MCP is the 13.3" model from mid 2010 and the graphics card is compatible. I have 8 GB installed, so that should be sufficient as well. The areas where I am having display issues are:
    * I don't see the film strip in the event browser. I do see the listing of the files in the event browser.
    * I can not see the Inspector browser. Clicking on the i icon does not do anything and does not bring up the inspector browser
    * I can not see any of the effects. Clicking on any of the effects buttons does not do anything and does not bring up the effects browser
I also notice that when resizing the FCP window, it does not get repainted properly.
One last thing that is annoying, but I found a work-around for this, is the splash window shows when FCP has loaded. It does not open FCP with the same layout as I last used, in fact it is only showing the menu bar and nothing else.
I hope that someone can help me with any of these problems. I was really excited about getting started with FCP X, but this has been a downer so far....
    Thanks.
    Edwin

    Hi,
i had the same problem when i used the 10.0 version....but i solved in three ways:
    Restarting the computer;
    or
Creating a new event, clic on new event and the old clips appeared like magic in the old event if you try to access it again....
    or
Click and keep pressed the Event icon (the purple star); try to put it in "Machintosh HD" or any hdd you have the event. Magically the clips are again in the browser....
    Try......
    Cheers

  • Help with multiclip editing in FCP

Can someone please help me with multiclip editing. I have followed all the steps in the tutorials I have watched but I am unalble to switch between the two angles in the time line. Also the red line in the time line is telling me to render everything first . Is that normal or is it because I am using the 5.0 version of FCP?

To switch between angles, the timeline should not be rendered. Once you render it, it may play more smoothly, but you can't switch.
Also, sometimes you may have trouble switching many HD files, so it might work better to use Media Manager to make lower resolution proxies for your editing, then bringing the full-res files back for your final output. If the computer can't handle the load, it may refuse to do multiclip editing.
Finally, you may need to switch Playhead Sync back to "Open" from time to time. For some reason, the Viewer sometimes switches to "Sync Off".
By the way, your question actually belongs on the Final Cut Studio forum:

  • Audio sync issues in FCP X

Here is the scenario: The video shoot is an interview format. I recorded my audio externally using the Zoom H6. The sample rate was set at 48kHz, 24bit.
The camera used to shoot the video was a Canon 60D. It appears that it recorded its audio from the internal mic on the cam at 48kHz. The frame rate was set to 1920x1080 @ 24fps.
I bring the audio and video file into my project on FCP X and sync them to my slate. Slowly but surely the external audio starts to fall behind the video.
    Project settings for FCP X are: 1920x1080 | 24fps. Audio is Stereo | 48kHz.
Please help! What am I doing wrong here?

    Hi FCPX & Apple...
I searched the internet to see if I can find this issue and came to this site.  So created my account and logged in and adding my bit (apols for my name that appears...completely accidental! )
There is an issue with FCPX - ver 10.1.2...I'm convinced...(I bought a iMac 27" full spec machine in Feb 2014).  Very recently I've been working on a show reel and I have imported a file (short film).  I set the project to the film's settings ie.. "set based on first video clip"...(1920x1080 24p, 1080p HD), audio rate bit 1536.  When I play the film in FCPX the audio "hic-cups"..."dips to silence"..."drops-out" briefly and very frequently all the way through (approx 15 mins long film)...note: audio set is at stereo 48kHz.
I also have a version of the film in 2048x1240 24p at 2k, again Stereo 48kHz...and this does the same audio "drop-out" all the way through.
So I went off trying to see what was happening.  In the main story timeline...do this...
...Control-click on the picture...and select "Detach Audio" so that audio and video are separated...then...play the film/file where those audio issues occur...you'll notice that the audio still glitches i.e. still drops out frequently...
    ...now...
...click on the video component and press "v" to effectively "grey it out" so you do not see any video in the Viewer but your audio is still "active"...now...go back to the area where you believe the audio "glitches"/"drops-out"...and play it again.
    ...it plays fine...no issues!
...To prove it to yourself...as you play the film/media and with the video component highlighted...press "v" on/off to activate the video only and notice that the audio plays fine (no "drop-outs") when the video is deactivated...but the "drop-outs" are return when the video component becomes active again (press "v" again)!
The video component is affecting the audio component in FCPX!  When you output to any file format, these audio glitches disappear...hence an software issue!
FCPX / Apple Please Fix!  It's driving us crazy!

  • A/V out-of-sync issue for FCP captures

I've read many of the out-of-sync posts on this board, most of which seem to indicate that the problem is usually caused by either dropped frames, bad timecode breaks, edit errors, or disunity between FCP capture and sequence settings, compared with audio sample rates for the underlying files.
My files, shot on my Panasonic AG-DVX100A in 24pa mode, result in perfect (except for the anamorphic screen size - see my next post!) Quicktime movie files, in perfect sync. It's only when I create clips from those files in FCP that the video and audio go out of sync. And the out-of-sync drifts; that is, the further you go in the clip, the more out of sync the sound and the video gets.
My camera is always set to the 24pa mode, which, by default, records only in the non-drop-frame mode, regardless of any other camera settings I may have selected. The audio settings in my camera (and in the resulting underlying QT files that are created when I capture in FCP) are 16-bit integer and 48.000 khz, as they are in both my FCP sequence presets and capture presets, so I don't think it's an issue of conflicting sample rates. My device control presets are for Firewire NTSC NDF (non dropped frame).
Given the above information, does anyone have any idea what else I might be doing wrong? I've already shot hundreds of hours of footage last year that worked fine. I don't know what I changed to cause this out-of-sync problem now, but I'm going bald tearing out my hair trying to figure it out.
Thanks in advance for your help!

The dvd recorder was in the loop when the sync issue showed up.  the dvd was in sync but the live stream, next in line, was out of sync.  I have returned to using the older machine with xp.  (the lap top is running vista)  The older machine is a desktop which requires more space on the production table and time to set up.

  • Exporting using Compressor failed, and other awekward issues with FCP

Hi FCP gurus! I need your help!
Everytime I try to export using compressor, my submission fails.
I even try a sequence a exported as m2v on Monday, but today is not working.
Compressor will some times say "Unable to view preview, FCP is busy". When I press submit, it goes to Batch Processor but it either will immediately show FAILED or it will just not do any processing. When I quit and restart, then the submission appears as failed.
Also when exporting, FCP comes back with a pop message saying that 4 files went offline. When I try to reconnect them it says: "There are not clips selected that have files associated with them". So, why is FCP constantly not able to fine this files, if they are not been used?
I need to export a file for my soundtrack guy, and he needs MOV, preferable DV-PAL or Motion-JPEG or similar frame-based codecs. What are my options?
In any case, what the problem here is that I CANNOT export anything. What shall I do? I already restarted the computer twice, nothing.
I realized that I have files using in this project, saved in two different external harddrives, do you think this has anything to do with the issue?
    I am using FCP 5.1.4
    Thanks so much in advance!

First off, fwiw, I never "send to compressor."  I export a self-contained QT movie, not a conversion.  Then I run that through compressor with the appropriate settings.  I like the self contained file, it becomes a master from which I can make all sorts of variations.  The only difference, in theory between self contained and reference, is that if for any reason you lose the render files the reference movie will not work.
    Q1 No.
    Q2 see above
Q3  There is no such thing as uncompressed.  It's just a different codec rather than a perfect copy of your timeline.
Q4 lots of reasons for making a conversion, but none of them are valid for making DVD's
Q5  Nothing wrong with letting DVDSP make the encoding-- just be sure to get into the preferences for DVDSP and set the destinations to a folder for the project, so you don't overwrite any other projects.  Depending on how long the project is, you can let it encode in the bg while you set up your project, build the buttons etc.  It's all the same encoding engine, whether is is done in compressor or dvdsp.   I find it much faster to use compressor then to take to dvdsp becaue you can use quickcluster.
Now a couple of questions for you:  what sort of footage are you using and what are your fcp sequence settings?

  • Issues with FCP 4.5 and OS 10.4.6

Does anybody know of any compatiility issues with this?
    Thanks!
    -dakkan

Nearly.... I upgraded to 10.4.7 and QT 7.1.2 recently, and my old G4/450 Sawtooth that used to capture reliably as a second machine (while I carried on editing on a more up to date G4) has now stopped capturing properly. I get all sorts of crashes, incorrect timecodes or unexpected quits with FCP 4.5 now, since the update.
(PS: Did you really mean 10.4.6?)
BTW: Can anybody offer ME any advice?

  • Metering issue between FCP and STP

    Hello folks,
I'm having an issue when I export a piece of audio from FCP to STP. Once it is in STP, I normalize it up to 0 db. When this is complete, the meters peak in the 0 db range. When I save and return that same piece of audio back to FCP, it will now peak at -12 db. I'm unsure of why there is a discrepency in the meters. Why does it say 0 db in one program and -12 db in the other? I'm not sure what I'm missing and was curious to know if others have had this issue as well.
    Mac 2.0 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   FCP Studio
    Mac 2.0 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   FCP Studio

Yes the meters are all wonky in STP. My guess is that whoever designed them does not know the first thing about audio post production or digital metering and work flow between formats.
If Final Cut Pro uses -12dbfs as their reference instead of sony -20 standard then so be it, but broadcast standard is -20dbfs = 0dbm
It looks like they have taken the -12dbfs = 0dbm and included it into the meters in STP. So they are no longer using the -12 ref correctly and are not actually Digital Full Scale Meters but an entirly NEW kind of meter that Apple has design for the purpose of?
So a REAL -12db full scale signal shows as 0db full scale in these meters what ever they are. Not rational or useful. Plus the balistics are from outer space. You cannot seem to tell how close you are to the imginary O reference they are using.
I repeat: A REAL - 12DB Full Scale signal, shows as 0db Full Scale in these meters adding to an already confusing hodge podge of digital references.
    Minor discrepency
So if you want to master your audio close to 0db full scale for DVD you will have to use a different program as 0dbfs does not exist on these meters! So when you hit +12db on these meters the signal is actually 0dbfs on ANY OTHER FULL SCALE DIGITAL METER IN THE WORLD.

  • Weird multiclip issues in FCP7

Ever since I upgraded to FCP7, multiclip editing has been behaving strangely. If I have any ins or outs marked in my sequence, my add edit/angle change occurs there, not at the playhead. also,, when i cut to a new angle in the timeline, my playhead goes to the frame before the new edit. Anyone know what's up with this?
    Thanks.

thanks for the lecture. yes, i know the cardinal rule, don't mess with your system while in the middle of a project. i've been working with FCP since 1.25, so i have seen my share of problems. i installed before i started the project and since the promise of iChat theater had the potential to streamline my workflow, i took the plunge. unfortunately, i have tried clean installs numerous times over the many years i have been working with FCP and rarely have my problems been resolved. i am curious if anyone has seen or heard of this specific problem. i am not looking for the standard (and lazy) advice that the "experts" are always offering to newbies. help from someone who can actually help would be more than appreciated.

  • Multiclip issue: camera views turn to single view in canvas after 1st edit

I have been having a problem I can not figure out. I have had it with FCP 5.0 and FCP 6.0. After making a multi clip and dragging it to my timeline. It works great, I edit it normally with no problems. Sometimes , but not always, when I go back to fine tune the edit, here is what happens.
When I play the multiclip, I only see the full screen image that is also playing in my canvas. When I stop the clip all three edit windows ( I am working with 3 cameras) show back up in my viewer. When I hit play again, the 3 edit windows disappear and the same full screen video is playing in both the view and the canvas.
Some times while playing the timeline, a section will play with all three edit windows available, and the next clip on the timeline the edit window returns to full screen, not allowing me to edit or see the three cameras simultaneously.
Anyone have any ideas how to solve this problem?

I just re-read your posts and you say that only one angle appears in the CANVAS? That is how it's supposed to work. You can also set it to play back in mult-angle view to your video monitor (I think it also plays in the Canvas, I can't remember off-hand), but that doesn't work well for mult-angle editing. You want to see all the angles (as many as possible at least) in the Viewer (monitor wall), and to see the active "on-air" angle in the Canvas (Air/Program output). That's how we do it in live, and live-to-tape productions.
In multiclip mode, these are examples of what happens:
    1. During playback, hitting keypad numbers 1, 2, 3,... will cut to those angles, but will not record the cuts (may need to change keyboard layout in the FCP menu)
    2. During playback, hitting Cmd + keypad numbers 1, 2, 3,... will cut those angles, and the cuts will be recorded in the sequence, effectively allowing you to "switch it live" (may need to change keyboard layout in the FCP menu)
    3. During playback, all angles will play together (like a monitor wall) in the Viewer, with the active angle being highlighted
    4. While playback is stopped, and the Canvas/sequence is selected, where ever the playhead is in the sequence, hitting keypad numbers 1, 2, 3,... will change that clip's angle
I see you have a MBP, so if that's what you're editing on, then the keypad thing won't necessarily work. I don't recall if the top number keys also do it, but you can program them to if they don't in the Keyboard Layout menu.
The FCP manual is actually pretty helpful with all this. I'd also suggest to not collapse any of your multiclips until you're finished editing.

  • Troubles multiclip editing in FCP 7

I am running FCP 7 on a quad mac pro...with stripped raid internal hard drives ...when I go to "multiclip" ntsc 720 x 480 footage 3 streams...I get a "drop frame warning" and when I uncheck the box do not warn again...it allows multiclip editing to work but with NO AUDIO PLAYBACK.
I have been doing this type of multiclip editing for years in FCP 6 on my older power Mac with no problems. So I tried the same footage on my power mac fcp 6 and it works.
How do I get FCP 7 to stop shutting of the audio during multiclip editing?

Make sure that you are playing the sequence, not the viewer. If your audio is not linked to the video clips anymore and you play the viewer, you will not hear the audio.
