Multilevel List Style and Numbering

I have searched the forum without success regarding a RH8 problem. Can someone help? My problem may be user error, but I suspect it is a bug based on the few posts I found regarding multilevel list numbering.
I created a multilevel list style. I configured the alignment of the text lines as desired. I used the style. All was working well. Then for no apparent reason, the alignment of the lines changed. The second line of text in a numbered line does not align correctly, as shown in the file attached to this post. I can resolve the problem but only temporarily by reinstalling RH8.
Alas, I was excited about the new multilevel list functionality, but I have found it to be very unstable.

Thanks to Rick, my problem is solved!
Rick looked at my style sheet and used it to make a small chm file and it displayed perfectly. He told me that he suspected either the browser settings or perhaps the display settings.
After comparing all IE settings to no avail, I turned to the Display Settings for Windows 7.
In Display Settings, I had the text setting set on medium (125%), so I changed it back to the default, which is smaller 100%), logged off and then back on and BINGO!!
That was it!
I thought I had a problem with RoboHelp and it turned out to be the display setting for the OS! Urghhhhh!!!
Hope this helps other folks, who might be using the same setting and think that they're having a problem with their chm.....
Thanks again, Rick!
Best regards,
Deb

  • Styles And numbering : bug or not bug?

    I'm migrating from word to pages and I am experiencing a strange behavior in styles and titles numbering in Pages 09 (French versionà
    Based on what I have observed, the link between styles and numbering seems to be broken: if you apply a certain numbering style to a title style, it will not be applied correctly. Only one numbering style seems to be memorized amongst the differents styles.
    Here are some simple steps to reproduce what I observed:
    -Open pages
    -Create a new document a select "Harvard Structure" from the templates list (this is a template that includes numbering). You get a document with different kind of numberings (A. 1. (1)) : everything's all right for now
    -Display the styles pane and you will see that only one kind of numbering is memorized in the stylesheet : although the "Title 3" is numbered with 1.,2.,3. in the template the title style is memorized as being numbered with I. II. III.
    Any attempt to apply different numberings styles to the different styles will not work... Did I miss something in the documentation?
    PS : sorry for the duplicate question (I posted accidentally the first question when it was not finished in the Pages08 section)

    If I understand well, nothing odd, nothing wrong.
    You are just fooled by the two meanings of the word "style".
    When you apply the style Harvard to a list, you aren't using the 'named style Harvard'
    It's the same thing than the one with the menu item "Bold" which apply the Bold style
    and the 'named style Emphasis" (Accentuation in French).

  • Table of contents: Style and numbering

    Hi all,
    I've already found some information about the page numbers in the Toc here on the forum, so thank you for posting that.
    What I can't find is this: I've got my table of contents with the page numbers aligned to the right side. The toc consists all the titles I've used in my Pages document. In this document I gave these titles different numbers, i.e. I've used the styles for creating a list. So in my document I have something like this:
    1 Food
    1 1 Vegetables
    1 1 1 Carrots
    text about carrots
    1 1 2 Tomatoes
    text
    1 2 Fruit
    1 2 1 Apples
    text about apples
    1 2 2 Lemons
    text about lemmons
    2 Drinks
    2 1 Hot drinks
    2 1 2 Coffee
    text..
    I don't want to start a discussion about wheter or not a tomato is a fruit or a veg . I would like to know how i get these numbers in my Toc ? Right now I have this toc :
    Food 1
    Vegetables 1
    Carrots 1
    Tomatoes 2
    Fruit 3
    Apples 3
    Lemons 4
    Drinks 5
    Hot drinks 5
    Coffee 6
    But I want something like this :
    1 Food 1
    1 1 Vegetables 1
    1 1 1 Carrots 1
    1 1 2 Tomatoes 2
    1 2 Fruit 3
    1 2 1 Apples 3
    1 2 2 Lemons 4
    2 Drinks 5
    2 1 Hot drinks 5
    2 1 2 Coffee 6
    Can somebody show me how to do this ? And also, is there a possibility of changing the text layout in this Toc according to the layout I've used for these titles in my Pages document ?

    Actually, yes, it was tedious, but I gave the numbering in the heading styles a fair go. tried my own indented numbering styles. When the doc becomes large enough, the auto-numbering breaks. I write fairly intense technical docs, with legal (or tiered) numbering, I cannot afford either the incorrect numbering, or the ToC not showing the numbered heading.
    Typing the number into the heading, and using say 4 heading styles for four level of detail (tiers), works well. But do not start until the doc is fairly stable, and thus the numbers do not change. These numbers show up in the ToC very nicely. You can use didferent ToC Heading styles and make that look good as well.
    And, yes, I have requested the feature. What I really want is the heading sytle to remember the indent/tier level and keep track of it; and not get lost in a large doc; THEN showing that number in the ToC.
    Cheers
    Derek

  • Multilevel lists in indented text

    Hello everybody,
    I am using RoboHelp HTML 11 and I have a question regarding the use of multilevel lists in indented text.
    The main text in my topics is indented by 122.7px in order to leave enough space for text boxes that summarize the main text parts in the left margin.
    Now I want to create a multilevel list style so that I can use these lists in the indented main text. Therefore, I created a paragraph style "List_Style" which includes the indention of the main text (122.7px). Then I created a new multilevel list style in which each list level is based on the "List_Style" paragraph style. In my understanding the indention should be adopted from the "List_Style" style but unfortunately it doesn't. Can anybody please tell me why and what I have to do to make this work?
    Best,
    Mr. Fox
    PS: My output will be HTML5 Responsive Layout and Printed Documentation and I created all styles I am using in RoboHelp.

    Thank you very much for your reply amerilinguistics.
    Peter's site is excellent, I've studied it before but unfortunately I could not figure out what my problem is.
    I will try to describe it as detailed as possible:
    The paragraph style of my main text "MyMainText" has the following properties:
    p.MyMainText {
        font-size: 9pt;
        margin-bottom: 6pt;
        line-height: 150%;
        text-align: justify;
        font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;
        margin-top: 0pt;
        text-indent: 0px;
        margin-left: 122.7pt;
    I have copied the "MyMainText" paragraph style and named it "List_style". Consequently it has the same properties as "MyMainText" (I just wanted to be able to play around, that is why I created "List_style"). My multilevel lists should be based on "List_Style" so that they align properly with the main text and the margin of 122.7pt is kept.
    Then I created a new multilevel list "MyBulletList":
    rh-list.MyBulletList {
        x-level-count: 3;
        x-lvl-1-type: MyList_Level1;
        x-lvl-1-format: "<x>";
        x-lvl-1-margin: 20px;
        x-lvl-1-text-indent: -20px;
        x-lvl-1-p-class: List_Style;
        x-lvl-1-p-tag: p;
        x-lvl-2-type: MyList_Level2and3;
        x-lvl-2-format: "<x>";
        x-lvl-2-margin: 40px;
        x-lvl-2-text-indent: -20px;
        x-lvl-2-p-class: List_Style;
        x-lvl-2-p-tag: p;
        x-lvl-3-type: MyList_Level2and3;
        x-lvl-3-format: "<x>";
        x-lvl-3-margin: 60px;
        x-lvl-3-text-indent: -20px;
        x-lvl-3-p-class: List_Style;
        x-lvl-3-p-tag: p;
    I now go back to my main text and hit ENTER to insert a multilevel list. Therefore, I click the Insert Multilevel list button and select my "MyBulletList".
    Result: The bullet appears in the margin that should be kept blank even though it is actually part of my "List_Style".
    My questions are:
    Why are the list levels not based on the paragraph style "List_Style" and its set margin of 122.7pt?
    What can I do to make the lists work (HTML5 Responsive Layout and Printed Documentation)?
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Mr. Fox

  • List style not visible in printed documentation

    Robohelp 8.0.2
    Is this a bug???  I opted to use a numbered list style rather than a numbered paragraph style to label procedural steps.  The advantage of a list style is that skip numbering would not work properly using the paragraph style. i.e.:
    'Steps' Paragraph style with numbering associated:
    First step.
              Result of first step.
    Second step.            * Bullets and Numbering does not allow me to consistently "Restart numbering at 2" (and HTML this produces is faulty).
    'NumberedStep' List style with numbering:
       1.  First step.
               Result of first step.
       2.  Second step.               * Bullets and Numbering allow me to consistently "Restart numbering at 2."
    Now I see the consequences of my decision:  My 'NumberedStep' style is not included in the styles dropdown.  Inconvenient, but not itself the end of the world.
    The real problem is this:  Printed Documents are not consistent with the style defined in 'NumberedStep'.
    The font is larger than it should be, and indents are all over the place:
    This is the selection I made on Generate Printed Document:
    On first review, all the styles in my source translated easily to Word, but the style for NumberedStep text was not.  That text is now 'Normal'.
    I've hunted high and low to solve this issue, so a direct reply is appreciated.

    Firstly, your better off using liststyles than paragraph list styles, I screwed around a long time before I had to set everything to liststyles rather than paragraph ones. So dont worry about that.
    The first issue, of not seeing the style - it is there, if you open the Styles tab on screen (click in a topic to get the cursor, then Format > Styles), not just the dropdown like youve shown youll see a list of all your styles, almost, it will show paragraph styles, click the drop-down and select All available styles, this will display your list styles as well!
    Im not sure about the style settings, I have the same text setting applied in my list style as I use for my 'normal' text. Though I think you can select the text in a list and apply a paragraph style to it....i just tried and it worked, but to be on the safe side you might want to set the text formatting in the list style css too..
    mine looks like this
    li.NumberList {
        font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;
        font-size: 10pt;
        color: #524C45;
        list-style: decimal;
        margin-bottom: 6pt;
        margin-top: 6pt;
    As for printed formats not indenting lists, this is an issue. So far I have found no way around it because you cannot map a  list styles in RH to a list style in Word. This has also created errors for line spacing and indents - and  I found the indents are severly messed up when using list styles in snippets. Everytime I create printed documentation I have to manually fix it, a pain but it doesnt take too long....you could use macros etc to speed it all up for you.
    Submit a Wish Form.
    Hope it helps.

  • Changing Styles for Numbering

    I am using RoboHelp HTML Version 8
    When I select the "create a numbered list" button. The number appears in a different font from the text. I selected Format/Styles/Normal, but I don't see how to change it.
    thanks

    Hi,
    With the Normal style, you set the font of the paragraph and not of the list. If you do not style the list, the browser will return to the default. The easiest things to do (in my opinion ) are:
    - Create a list style and apply it to eacht list: Right click | Bullets and Numbering | Custom | Pick your custom style.
    - If you always want a list to use a standard font, open your style sheet in an external editor and add the following code:
         OL, UL { font-family: Arial; }
         Change Arial to the name of the font you want to use.
    Note: If you use a font with spaces in the name, such as Courier New, place the name between quotes: font-family: "Courier New";
    Note: As an 'extra' you can add any other standard styling to all your lists by adding more styling between the brackets.

  • Custom List Styles

    Is there any way to modify the List Styles in Pages '09 to get the following:
    B.1 Heading
    B.1.1 Another Heading
    B.1.1.1 Yet Another Heading
    The current iteration of List Styles can't seem to do this?

    In Pages (at least Pages '08 don't know about other versions), I just go to the view menu and choose Show/Hide Styles Drawer. The list styles are all at the bottom and its pretty easy to create a new one. It seems though, that when you create one it would be something saved in the application rather then something saved in the document.
    I can try using templates, but I tried it once and unless I actually have the list style I filled out in advance with gibberish in it, it saves funky. If I remove the list style and try to save the template, the left margin moves to almost the center of the document. This may be a completely separate issue so I'll keep playing with it to see if I can get what I want.
    I guess what I really want is to modify the standard blank document template to include my custom List Style in that Styles Drawer (accessible from the view menu). This seems like it should be a no brainer since custom list styles are so easy to make.

  • Multilevel list with combined roman letters and numbers

    I'm trying to format my headings in a multi-level list style like this:
    Chapter I: heading1
    I.1 subheading1
    I.2 subheading2
    I.3 subheading3
    Chapter II: heading2
    the problem is that indesign's multilevel list seem to support only one kind of numbering system. I can either use numbers or letters. But how can I combine both? Even word has that feature so Indesign should also have it, right? Can anybody help?

    There was a similar thread yesterday. It's not entirely clear if this is a bug (I think it is) or a feature since underlines are a character adornment, and automatic numbers are not recognized as characters in the same way as typed text, but the fact remains that underline and strikethrough don't work on numbers and bullets generated in a list.
    You have a couple of options. One is to use a paragraph rule and set a huge right indent, but this doesn't work too well for multi-digit numbers, nor do I think that it works all that well with letters in a proportional font.
    A second option would be to find a font with the circles or squares built into the characters and use it as part of a character style applied to the numbers. I think this is the best solution, but it may not give you the colors that you want if you need solid digits on a colored background.
    A third option might be to use an anchored object positioned behind the numbers. This has the most flexibility, I think.

  • RoboHelp - how to create Number1 and Number list styles?

    In RoboHelp 11, I have multi-level lists and normal lists. The multi-level list will continue numbering after a break in the list, like so:
    1. step one
    2. step two
    break
    3. step three
    If I want step three to start a new list, I go to the HTML and manually add a start="1" attribute. The normal list will start over at 1 after each break, and if I want it to continue I need to add a start attribute for wherever I left off.
    What I want is what I use in FrameMaker: a list style for Number1 that I can add when I want to restart lists, and a Number/Number_next for continuing where I left off, without having to manually alter the HTML. I feel like I'm missing something because I can't find an option to create a list like this in the CSS editor, and I can't figure out what to add manually to the CSS file in a text editor that makes RoboHelp recognize what I want it to do. But obviously the option exists because the multi-level list and the normal list exhibit both behaviors that I want.

    In RoboHelp (or HTML), there is no feature like you have in Frame. Both Multilevel list and regular HTML lists require you to set the numbering after you break.
    An alternative way of working may be to not create real paragraph but to end line feeds pressing Ctrl+ENTER. This won't break the list numbering while you can add multiple lines.
    Kind regards,
    Willam

  • RH8 conversion (bullet images and numbered lists are different)

    Version 8.0.2.208
    Conversion of 1200 htm files.
    Has anyone experience bullet images in their custom styles changing from RH7 to RH8 and numbers in numbered lists resized?
    Bullets
    I noticed that all my bullet images have changed. They are OK in Design view, but change when the topics are previewed and generated.
    For example, if the style used a small square bullet image, it was changed to the bullet used at the beginning of this sentence.
    If I attempt to create a new bullet list in the existing topic using the Normal style (Arial 12)  and Formatting Toolbar (Bullets), the bullet and text are changed to (Arial 10) and the style name changes to (none) in Design view. Preview and generated is also Arial 10 for both.
    Numbered Lists
    Most of the existing converted topics used the Normal style and Formatting Toolbar (Numbers) for numbered lists. There is spacing between each numbered line. The numbers and text are in (Arial 12) in Design view, but the numbers are (Arial 10) when the topics are previewed and generated and the text remains (Arial 12).
    If I select the numbered list, click the numbered list icon to turn off numbering, and then click to turn on numbering, the numbers and text are (Arial 10) and the style is changed to (none). Output and preview are (Arial 10). The spacing between the numbered items is deleted.
    I have to then highlight that list and change the style back to Normal for (Arial 12) text.
    If I attempt to create a new numbered list in the existing topic using the Normal style (Arial 12)  and Formatting Toolbar (Bullets), the bullet and text are changed to (Arial 10) and the style name changes to (none) in Design view. Preview and generated is also Arial 10 for both.
    This has taken up a lot of my time. Any clues?
    Donna

    I went to the link you provided.I am still confused as to the step by step procedure to fix my custom bullet style that is used throughout my project. Can you globally fix this issue? It would be too time consuming to figure out where in 1200 topics this style is used. I guess I don't understand list styles.
    Custom Style = BulletList
    My custom (BulletList) style -  Design mode:
    Preview mode (incorrect)
    Another topic using ths sam (BulletList) style - Preview mode (incorrect should be square bullets)
    I select Format > Styles in design mode. Right-click on BulletList, select Edit.
    If I ceate a bulleted list, the square bullet is selected.

  • Chapter NUMBERS? How to include list styles in TOC?

    How does one include chapter numbers!?? I have used a list style with a paragraph style as headings for chapters and paragraphs (Example: 1. Introduction | 1.1. Company X), which I now want to include in the TOC. Using the specific heading in the TOC only includes the text, and not the entire list item (number followed by text). How do I accomplish this list item to be included? Is there a way to (only) tweak the TOC style of a template?

  • CSS - Specifically bulleted and numbered lists

    i am really struggling with the css and the bulleted and number list format.
    i have so many questions i do not know where to begin so i will start with what i think should be just plain common sense:
    1.  i originally imported a css into the robohelp 8 project and have worked for a couple of weeks trying to straighten out the styles with no success
    so today i started from scratch creating a new cascading style sheet but i have real questions about what i have created, where i can see it, how i can apply it and how it DOES NOT reflect in the toolbar styles drop down list.
    first question:
    i have a custom style sheet that clearly shows i have a list style defined called 'bullet1'.  i can see the style in my formatting pod (pane) but i do not see it in the styles drop down list on the formatting toolbar.  so why are my styles from my CSS not in the styles drop down list on the formatting toolbar and also, when i apply a style (say from the formatting pod/pane) shouldnt the drop down styles list reflect the style name when it is clicked on? For example:  i clearly applied the bullet1 style (from the formatting pod/pane) and saved the topic.  when i go and click on the bullet1 list, the style drop down on the formatting menu still says (none).  no matter what i do, the only style that is reflected in the styles drop down field on the formatting toolbar (when i click on the text) is heading1 and heading2 but other than that, any numbered or bulleted style i create and apply does not show that that style has been applied.
    second question:
    what is the difference between the formatting pod (Pane) and the styles drop down list on the formatting toolbar?  from experience with word, the styles drop down list on the formatting toolbar should reflect the current style when a character or paragraph is selected....it does not here in robohelp.
    third question:
    why does the style drop down list only show a few styles out of all of the styles that show in my CSS?
    forth question:
    can i assume that if i have a css created and applied TO ALL topics in the project that the 'formatting' pod/pane will show only those styles from that css?  i am very confused on what i am seeing in the formatting pod/pane.  are these JUST the custom styles created for a particular style sheet?  are these ALL styles available in robohelp?
    i am not liking how difficult it is to create a style (specifically bullets and numbers) , apply a style and to view the style that has been applied!
    help!
    Lori

    Hi,
    Drop down list shows paragraphs, headings and character styles. Also when you create a class style (.myclass) without a element selector, this style will show in the drop down list.

  • Plug-in for bullets and numbered lists in Mail??

    Does anyone know of any plug-ins for the Mail app to do bullets and numbered lists like Entourage??
    The lack of this functionality really makes Mail kinda lame and unusable for me.
    Thanks!

    Paul,
    the fact that Mail does not support bullit lists is not an oversight but was done on purpose. It may look good on your computer when you compose the message, but you have little influence in the way recipients see that message. It can get very messy, I can assure you.
    If you want a perfect layout, compose in a wordprocessor and save as PDF, send that as an attachment.
