Multipath Interference

I've got an interesting one here...
I?ve got a customer whom I suspect is experiencing severe multipath interference and/or some type of EMI interference from large machinery. They are a metal machine shop with large drills, saws, and planers with overhead cranes moving back and forth to transport the metal from one location in the plant to the other. Oh and did I mention the walls were all sheet metal too? No plasma cutters or microwave type heating machines luckily...
They are running 1242 IOS access points using 12.3.8 code, using primarily the AIR-ANT3213 pillar mount antennas. They do have one area with two 1728 antennas mounted correctly. The clients are desktop PC?s using a mix of Linksys WRT54G card/antennas (not diversity) and Cisco PI21ABG cards/antennas. A passive survey was done previously to determine coverage and placement and coverage seems to be fine. In the logs I see a lot of clients dis-associating due to Max Retries Limits reached. The radio stats indicate very high numbers of CRC errors and high retries (hundreds every 5 minutes). Voice is not in use here. Ping tests show a lost packet every 20 or so tries. They are running an ERP application where if it loses enough data over time it shuts down. Email, web and simple file sharing seem to be fine.
I?ve run Air Magnet Laptop Analyzer and found higher signal to noise ratios than I would like (-50 to -60). The only thing it seems to notice is the high CRC errors and retries. The signal levels are constantly bouncing from -50?s to -60?s and are never steady. The signal distribution levels are bouncing all over as well, which from a quick look at Air Magnet?s knowledge base indicated possible RF or multipath interference. There is a high level of management traffic at the 1mbps data rate, but I suspect that is from either the script they are running to constantly ping the ERP server, or the frequent re-associations. I do not see any co-channel interference.
So far to combat this I?ve had the customer move the pillar mount antennas off of the metal I-Beams which Cisco recommends. I?ve experimented with power settings and found that I could turn it WAY down (was at 25mW) to 1mW which actually still provides plenty of coverage shockingly. Turned on Long Preamble and increased the Max Retries thresholds. Once I did this, there was some decrease in the CRC errors and retries, but I?m still not comfortable with it.
Does anyone else have any ideas to combat this? I?m considering trying a lower gain antenna, but reaching the antennas is a bit difficult without a lift. I?m even considering trying the 5ghz band as I believe it is a little less susceptible to interference. Not sure if the customer is willing to swallow that pill though.
Thanks in advance?

Thanks for the responses everyone.
Here's what went down...
The customer wasn't interested in changing antennas. What I did was turn the power as far down as I could (1mW). Lucklilly the survey was excellent and coverage was not an issue after turning the power down that low. Then I also limited the client power to 2mW as much as I could. They had a mix of Cisco and Linksys client adapters so I'm not sure how many were actually limited.
I also changed the fragmentation threshold down to 1024 and the RTS down to 1024. This was a recommendation from the folks over at the CWNP boards. I could have gone lower I suppose, but I didn't want to push my luck there. I also maxed the Max Retries & RTS Retries thresholds for good measure.
After all of this, we monitored the situation for about a day. I ran random continuous pings from random machines for well over an hour and not a single ping dropped. CRC errors were still high, but retries were down. I'm guessing the CRC's are just something we're going to have to live with in this high multipath environment.
All in all, the wireless network was much more stable after these changes.
Again, thanks for the replies.

    Hello All,
I am new to wireless and my company is about to pilot an internal iPad app. I am a network specialist in an IT department of a business that requires high security. I have received recommendations to look at Cisco access point routers due to their security features.
Are there any guides to give me a high level understanding about wireless access, including terminology, differences between technologies and deployment strategies?
The recommendation was for the Aironet 3502e. The iPads in our pilot project will be used in a public area of our business. At this point we are not ready to offer WiFi access in the public area. That may change. The iPads will connect to at least one server on our production network. If the pilot goes well we will be deploying this to several of our remote offices. Is the 3502e the best option for this project? Is there another Cisco device that may be better suited for our project?
If this should be posted elsewhere, please let me know and I will repost.
I appreciate assistance you can provide

SO from a purely RF coverage standpoint yes you could do that with the antennae. Is it the correct and best practices method of doing that? NO. Why? RF is a wave pattern carrier of data traffic. When the waves bounce off of multiple surfaces they ten to reflect and turn inward. Another example of this is a bathtub of water that is completely still. You drop a marble in at the far end and desire to get a perfect waveform at the other. As the waves spread out from the drop point the bounce off the walls and by the time they get to the other end the perfect wave is now only chop. The same happens with RF and when this happens multiple copies of the same wave hit the receiver at slightly different times. This is called multipath distortion or multipath interference. Second generation access points combated this with SiSo diversity technologies where the receiving access point would choose which of its two antennae to accept the signal from and then assuming the best path to then was also the best path back, send the return signal out of the chosen antenna that received the signal. The problem with mobility is that we are mobile and often the signal did not return adequately resulting in packet retries. Packet retries occur when the signal does not arrive properly at the intended receiver and the transmitting AP never gets the packet received message back from its intended target. OFDM modulation was the 3rd generation improvement still using SiSO to make diversity event stronger but still did not provide robust enough protection to allow for high speed data rates on RF. In come 802.11n. 802.11n allows for multiples of antennae to receive individual signals then phase shift them so that the signals can be combined to make a single, stronger, and more reliable reception of signal. This is called maximal ratio combining diversity or MRC. As much as a 40% SNR improvement. Then by phase shifting the return signal you can focus the return signal to the original sending device like a mag light. This is called beamforming. Since the signal is going back via multiple paths you can split the signal according to the number of transmitting antennae thus allowing for a quicker transmission of the data because you now have multiple paths back to achieve this. This is called spatial multiplexing. 802.11n also allows you to channel bond or add two adjacent channels together to in fact double the size of the pipe you are sending the data on. All of these technologies for 802.11n are the key components of MiMO technology or multiple in multiple out. We won't get into packet aggregation today as that could easily be another two pages of typing but just think of the old jumbo frame for Ethernet and you'll get the idea.
5th and 6th generation access points are now being developed around even more antennae and new standards. 4x4 or four antenna per radio solutions are now nearing fielding to the market and promise even better throughput rates of up to 6gb of throughput based on the being developed 802.11ac standard. These new standards reside around competing technologies such as Multiuser MiMO and DiDO or distributed input distributed output. The coming years promise even more innovation as RF scientists learn even more efficient ways of utilizing our existing spectrum.
So, back to the original question, spread the antennae around? No. Why? We need MRC diversity and MiMO to complete the task reliably. How? By placing the antennae apart in a linear path along a distance determined by multiples of the length of the wavelength. You can achieve this with individual antennae for each antenna connector on the AP and do the math calculations yourself OR just buy MiMO enable antennae that have proper placement of the antenna elements already placed for you.

  • E90 GPS Accuracy ?

What is the best accuracy one can get from the E90 GPS in terms of position in meters ? Does it depend on the GPS software, or what ?

    Hi tonyl
Improve your GPS receiver's view of the sky and your occurrence of multipath interference will decrease; loss of contact with just one satellite can cause indicated position to jump 20metre in addition to expected ±10metre error.
    Ionospheric effects ± 5 metre
    Ephemeris errors ± 2.5 metre
Satellite clock errors ± 2 metre
    Multipath distortion ± 1 metre
    Tropospheric effects ± 0.5 metre
Numerical errors ± 1 metre or less
On a negative note as solar flare activity increases up to 2011/12 you can expect degradation of GPS reception. At the last peak there were very GPS receivers compared with the expected situation next time around!

  • Red interference during capture with FCP 5.1.4

I have FCP version 5.1.4 . I am using OSX 10.6 snow leopard (Macbook Pro). Have captured and edited without any problems. All of a sudden I am getting an interference during capture. This interference comes in the form of a bright red color which suddenly fills half my screen from corner to corner forming a right angled triangle and hiding half of my picture triangularly. it flashes and then remains. Anyone know what the **** this is and how I can rectify it?
I would be EXTREMELY for any help anyone can give me. Thanks in advance.

This is happening to me today as well. Has it got something to do with 10.6.7 I have just updated and now I seem to be having the same problem

  • K7n2g-ilsr IGP graphics interference

When using the IGP, I see moving diagonal lines on my desktop.
I don't think it's a memory compatibility issue since I don't experience any reboots, lock-ups, crashes, etc. I suspect it's the PSU but I need a second opinion on this.
I already experimented with the bios settings with no luck, even on default.
    Here's my specs:
    XP 1,700+
    MSI K7n2g-ilsr
    2 pcs. twinmos 512 ddr400 (twinmos chips)
    Enermax 330 watts (+3.3v=30A, +5v=32A, +12v=12A, combined +3.3v and +5v= 160W)
I know that the 12v rail is too low, but like I said, I don't experience reboots and everything, just the annoying interference.
I haven't got this problem whenever I use a separate agp card (geforce2mx)

Your combined is low as well...should be more like 200W to get enuff power to this setup...
    Cheers!! 8)

  • Interference on display.

I'm getting random interference patterns on the display. Sometimes an image will become distorted and have lines run through it. Has anyone had this problem? I've had this on iOS 4.2 &4.3 so I'm hesitant to say it's a software issue. These issues have also caused a lot of lag lately on my iPod.

There are many reports of graphics issues after updating to 4.3, but I'm not aware of the same with 4.2.

Problems with ATI Radeon HD 2600, electrical interference or flickering pixels
I have a Macro 8 core purchased just 4 months ago with the ATI Radeon HD 2600. Just started getting what looks like electrical interference or flickering pixels all over the screen. It gets worse and worse to the point where i see and cant work then clears up for an hour and then comes back.
If I change the resolution from 1680x1050 to 1600x1200 everything looks fine and the problem goes away.
Monitor works fine on two other computers, driver is up to date.
Would like to upgrade at some point just disappointed that I’m already having problems.
Any suggestions would be very helpful, in the mean time I’ll searching the forums.

  • Is anyone with a Macbook experiencing interference with their iPhone's touch screen?

At first I thought my iPhone's touch screen was broken so I contacted apple. Before we could finish our chat, my internet crashed and we couldnt finish. Tonight I'm on my MacBook air wathcing Netflix and trying to use my iphone to text. The interference is so bad that when i hold my thumb on the screen in one spot, the phone will scroll for itself and typing is practically impossible. Is anyone else expierencing this problem? This problem didn't exist with my 4, But when I use my computer, my 5S is practically impossible to use near my Mac.

    Nope.

  • Is there a way to actaully talk to someone at apple whereby it doesn't cost money? I downloaded an app and now the stupid phone says that there is compass interference and to move away from the interference. Well, I am in the middle of a field. Now what?

Is there actually a way to talk to a service person at Apple where you don't have to shell out money? I downloaded an app that cost $9.99 and when I tried to use it I get a message that says there is compass interference and to move away from the interference or wave the phone in a figure 8 pattern. Well, now I have a sore arm from constant waving out in the middle of a field and it appears that is going to cost $29 to talk to a person. Does anyone have any idea why this is occuring? As a side note, I can use a normal compass with no issues so it is the phone. From a customer perspective, this is poor customer service.

First of all, an idle threat is one that a person has no intention of carrying out. In the past 16 months that I have had this phone I have become less and less satisfied and found that it is like much of today's technology....over rated and under performing. The one thing that I have never been accused of is not wanting, or not giving help but when a company makes itself unavailable to resolve issues and leaves it to forums run by users helping users, it speaks more about the company than anything else they could do. As I said, I do not make idle threats and I did not threaten you in any way. Guess I'll call this topic done with as it is not and was not the intent to get a war started

  • How to Configure Software iSCSI including Multipath

    Oracle Linux 6.6 3.8.13-44.1.1.el6uek.x86_64
Installed with a production network interface card and two 10G network connections for iSCSI traffic only.  Both iSCSI cards are on the same vLAN with different IP addresses on a range.
Connecting to a DELL Compellent SAN with 1TB of storage presented to the machine.
Connections can be successfully made via iSCSI and the target can be logged into however in the disk utility window on the server the storage shows as a single 1.1TB multipath drive as dm-0 along with 4 separate connections between sdc and sdf.
The output from multipath -ll is as follows.
I'm guessing that something in the underlying configuration is incorrect and would appreciate any assistance that can be provided.

  • Max retransmissions & interference threshold

We're getting complaints about a specific 1131AG in the field only being intermittently accessible. WCS shows both the a and b/g interfaces randomly bouncing, sometimes the reason for the bounce is unknown other times it says it's because it lost connection to the controller. I can ssh into the WCS but the engineer who setup the AP's doesn't seem to have enabled remote access via telnet or ssh.
We are also seeing these events:
802.11a interface of AP * is down: Controller 172.17.0.10 Reason: Max retransmissions for the AP have reached.
Interference threshold violation reported by '802.11b/g' interface of AP *, connected to Controller '172.17.0.10'.
I know I can adjust the threshold percentage, but that would only seem to mask the issue.

  • Chronic interference on phone line and broadband drifting in and out

hi, could I speak to an advisor please.  We have chronic interference on our phone line and our internet keeps drifting in and out, it has been like this since Tuesday.  I have done all the necessary checks including unplugging all the equipment and plugging a corded telephone into the test socket and it is still the same with the corded phone plugged into the test socket, so I'm guessing there is a fault on the line.  I need sky to do a line check for me.

I upgraded from a 1st generation to a 4th generation time capsule (model A4109) and since then my pay TV wireless transmitter has pulsating interference.  This is obviously due to the new dual band  frequency of the TC.  Is there any way I can set it to one band and what will that do?

Go in and manually set the wireless channel for 2.4ghz or 5ghz (whichever your av sender is).. try different channels.

Individual emails are deleted without my interference, and no longer be found. In one case I could restore the email with time-machine, in the other case there is no time machine backup for that time stamp.
How can this happen ? Is there a hadware problem or a virus ?
    manny thanks
    Ole

You don't need to get your domain name registrar to do this - you should easily be able to do it yourself.
Firstly, ensure that your domain name is entered into the Personal Domain name setting of your MobileMe account.
Go to your domain name registrar and then set up CNAME forwarding if they provide this and forward your domain name to web.me.com - this is all you need do - you don't need to fiddle with nameservers or anything else like that.
If they don't provide CNAME forwarding then you can use web forwarding instead.

  • All Of a Sudden Telephone Interference?

I have a UFO styled Airport Extreme base station linking a Mac PowerBook Pro, a G3 Breadbox, an older Dell PC and via USB, an Epson printer. This system has worked almost flawlessly for nearly two years, but now problems are occurring.
The wireless printer link has failed repeatedly and can no longer be re-established. The printer works fine when hard wired via USB to any of the compurters.
Within the last two months our 2.4gHz cordless telephone has begun interrupting the Airport signal. As soon as the telephone rings in its base or is turned on the Airport signal is lost. The situation is worse with the MBP and the PC. Both are farther from the base station and the phone is usually close to line of sight between either computer and the base station. The Airport link is re-established as soon as the telephone is turned off.
My question is; Could the base station be gradually failing? It was purchased used and I have no idea of its history.

It's possible, but most likely the problem is Wi-Fi interference from operating a 2.4 GHz device within range of your 802.11g (also 2.4 GHz) AirPort. Before attempting to replace either the base station or cordless phone, I suggest that you consider changing radio channels on both (if the phone supports this) to the "opposite" ends of 802.11g band: 1 & 11 or 1 & 14 if outside the US.
Note: This issue is NOT unique to the AirPort and can happen to any manufacturer's wireless device operating in the same radio band as the cordless phone.
Your other option is to ditch the 2.4 GHz phone and get one that operates in either the 900 MHz or 5 GHz band ... or, of course, use a corded phone.
