Multiple (3 or more) monitors for PXI 8110 controller?

I'm just fishing for help from the NI community out there to help a customer: has anyone had success using the PXI 8110 with multiple (3 or more) monitors?  I believe it can inherently support 2 monitors.  We've tried ADlink and Peritek cPCI cards without success.
If so, please share how you accomplished it.  Thanks!

The Apple OS hates unmatched video cards.. and Photoshop CS4 shows you that clearly.
I started with 2 nVidia 7300s... upgraded to 1 nVidia 8800 and kept 1 nVidia 7300... crashed every 10 minutes it seems.
Then upgraded to 2 nVidia 8800s. I still get 1 or 2 crashes a day but nothing near what I got with unmatched video cards.
Based on all my research and the crash reports posted it seems clear that the primary cause of the issue is Apple video drivers and their inability to tell the cards apart. In many cases my crashes were occurring because the drivers were asking the 7300 to do things it simply could not do. I found with the matched 8800 cards most days things run fairly smoothly. I will get a crash or two a day, but I can tell immediately when Photoshop is going to crash. Not that that is any help. But I can at least work now. I just must relaunch PS a couple times and save often.
From what I've found there's little you can do. Basically matched video cards help a great deal but they aren't perfect. Remove one card so you are only using a single video card, or wait for Apple to fix drivers (OS10.6 in Sept maybe???). This is clearly a case where Apple embedding drivers in the OS can be an issue because you can't simply download an ATI or nVidia update and install it.
The one thing I haven't tested with the matched 8800 cards is to turn off OpenGL since that's a primary reason for my upgrading (rotating canvas is a life saver). Turning off all Open GL features may make PS more stable on my system with matched cards. I'm not certain. I can definitively tell you that unmatched video cards are a nightmare and matching 8800s are pretty good. Nothing I'm up in arms about and I have the GL features to use.

  • New network (and much more) monitor for XFCE panel

A few years ago I wrote a tiny app to show a text network monitor in the XFCE panel, resembling the previous one I was familiarized with (in KDE?).
The past month I started fixing a bug and ended in a full rewrite, but keeping the original simplicity (at least in the panel bar) despite that now reports far more than the network activity.
The installation instructions are the same: download a single file (no dependencies), compile it, add a Generic Monitor Applet (XFCE) to the panel and configure it to load the new executable.
I have updated the wiki page, but the full instructions and code is now hosted at github: "Hacker's Monitor for XFCE". Yes, it has a new name also.
Here follows a screenshot with the mouse over the applet to open the tooltip (yes, I was intentionally doing a dd from /dev/sda into /dev/null ):

  • System Monitor for PXI 4-Slot Chassis

    Hi all,
I have PXI 4-Slot and PXIe 5-Slot system, which are currently being used for continuous monitoring of some power parameters. Recently, there's a requirement for us to actually monitor the status and health of these PXI systems. I was told that PXI-8250 and NI System Monitor can only work with 8-Slot chassis. Is there a solution smaller chassis? Please advice.

I got the same problem and started a thread in the Idea Exchange:

Hopefully NI will update the System Monitor soon.

  • Looking for NDIS2 driver for PXI ethernet controller.

I need to find a DOS level network driver (NDIS2) for the PXI815xb Ethernet controller. This driver does not appear to be on the driver disk or hard drive of the PXI chassis.

The file is attached below. Just unzip it to a floppy disk. You will need to modify the settings for your particular network.

  • Can an image of Windows 2000 using NI-VXI 3.5 with a PXI-MXI controller be fielded for multiple computers using sysprep?

I am trying to field an image of Windows 2000 using NI-VXI 3.5 with a PXI-MXI controller.  Can I set the system up to retain to original settings for VXI?  Some of my computers use a PCI-MXI controller.  Although Windows always finds the MXI controller, the original VXI System 0 is not used.  I have several VME instruments set up and the target is about 85 different computers.  Also the NI-GPIB interface does not show in MAX.  Is this supposed to work?

    Hello,
Here's an update regarding the gpib error. There has been a Corrective Action Request (CAR) ID:3BI8A578, filed due to a similar issue of error gpibpnp.exe with NI-488.2 v2.2 on Windows 2000 and Sysprep. This issue's workaround involved going back to install NI-488.2 v2.1 or installing the v2.3 release in order to eliminate the problem. Currently, NI-488.2 v2.3 is no longer available for download, however, all operating systems and hardware supported by NI-488.2 v2.3 are also supported by NI-488.2 v2.4 (see link 1).

  • NTSC Monitor for Pro CS3

I'm a bit embarrassed to post this, but have not been successful at finding the answer in a search.
When I am running w/ dual monitors and an NTSC monitor, what do I need to do w/ PPro so it outputs just the video (or program video, if you will) to the NTSC monitor - vs. outputting what you would normally see on the computer monitor.  I assume it is in the ppro set up menu somewhere.
For now I am running CS3 (soon to upgrade to CS5) - I have the GeForce GTX 470 video card and dual monitors.  I just recently purchased a NTSC monitor w/ a HDMI input so I've never had to worry about this, but I've grown tired of burning a DVD only to run up stairs to check color on a television (vs. the computer monitor).  I (incorrectly) assumed the card would support dual montiors and a NTSC monitor (I realize this is now being a hardware question) because it also had an HDMI out.  That being said, I've was able to find some info on this site (which I love btw) and saw that I could add another video card to supply video to a NTSC monitor.....but I still don't know how to limit the source of either card to the video out put of PPro.
Hope that makes sense...any help would be appreciated.
    C.

Since I haven't actually done this, so can't be sure if there is a possible problem, follow at your own risk
Premiere will only recognize 1 graphics card for hardware acceleration, so adding a second card doesn't help on that front.  Having said that, I would expect you could add a lower cost graphics card to run more monitors, which I have done and it works fine.
Now, as far as running the signal to a TV/monitor it follows that if you get a card that supports the type of output you desire to run the TV/monitor then it all takes care of itself from there.
On my 2 monitor setup I undock the playback monitor and drag it to the second screen where I can make it larger for better viewing of detail.  Seems like you should be able to just drag it over to the TV/monitor then when you are ready to watch the playback there instead of on the computer monitor.
Seems straight forward, but perhaps someone who has actually done this will chime in.  There may even be a way to duplicate the playback monitor on multiple screens so you can watch it playing on both the computer monitor and the TV/monitor at the same time??  But I'm guessing that will require an external box to split the output signal to the different destinations.
Hope you get it sorted out.

  • There is no more space for virtual disk ServerName_2.vmdk. You might be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant volume, and clicking Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session.   Time: 30/05/2014 1:16:20 AM

Recently, our mail server crashed at about 7pm one night, with the error 'There is no more space for virtual disk ServerName_2.vmdk. You might be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant volume, and clicking Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session.'
When we click Retry, the server starts up OK.
There are no snapshots listed in Snapshot manager for any of the virtual machines on the host.
There is also free disk space available on the host and for the VM with the disk errors.
This happened at least three more times, often at bad times. Each time, we were able to click 'Retry' and the disk/system would allow the VM to start-up successfully.
I checked the Forums, the VMware support articles and the internet as I had not seen this problem before. I have completed the VSphere 5.1 - Fast Track course and this issue was NOT covered in the training.
Most of the advice on-line and even that on the VMware web-site was pointing to snapshots being the cause of this issue. There are no snapshots enabled and I cannot see evidence of snapshots ever being used.
    - We are running VMware vsphere (5.1.0) and there are (were) 4 virtual machines running on the ESX host. We are using the free version of VMware/ESXi.
    - The Hard disk types we are using for this Virtual Machine are 'Thin Provisioned'.
    - There are 4 [Thin Provisioned] Hard Disks for this virtual machine.
    - There are 6 CPUs
    - There is 20GB of RAM (memory)
    - The VM is running Windows Server 2008 R2 as the guest/VM operating system. It is an Exchange 2010 SP1 mail server. There is plenty of available disk space on all the drives. The [Exchange] log files are cleaned out regularly (automated).
I decided to move one of our non-critical servers off this host and on to another host to see if this helped the problem. This took quite some time, as we are not using HA or vmotion, nor do we have VCenter Server...nonetheless, I finally managed to get the non-critical server on to another host (n.b. This was a much smaller machine with less virtual resources assigned to it).
After moving the non-critical server off this host, we decided to monitor the Host and see if the issue resolved itself.
I checked the host about 6-10 times a day, from first thing in the morning till last thing at night - monitoring the performance of not only the Virtual Machine, but the ESXi host also.
There were no adverse performance issues. The only thing I did note, was in the Summary page on the ESX Host, under Storage, was If I right-clicked on the datastore and clicked refresh, then the free disk space would drop (ie from 140GB to 125GB).
After monitoring the host and VM for about 2 weeks, we did NOT have another instance of the above error.
Sorry for the long winded post, but I wanted to give as much detail given this error has been raised before and snapshots are usually blamed as the cause.
    My question is this:
If the ESX host had plenty of available disk capacity and there were no snapshots enabled on the VM (or any other VM's on the same host), then why did our Virtual machine crash with the error that 'there is not more space for virtual disk Servername_2.vmdk'?
How do we prevent this issue from happening if we don't know the underlying cause?
I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions.
If I have not provided enough info on the specs or environment, please let me know and I will provide more information.
    Thanks all,
    Kurt

The type of storage is really based on your requirements, and your ability to withstand downtime.
iSCSI as you are using with a NAS such as Synology or QNAP.  NAS Selector - Support - Synology - Network Attached Storage (NAS)
I wouldn't use iSCSI for Exchange or any database.  It's a bit slow.
Do you have a single physical host?  Then I'd probably to an external direct attached storage.  This would be a card inserted in your host server that gives you multilane SAS/SATA connectivity (www.techcable.com/SAS-SATA/SAS-SATA.pps) and an external disk enclosure/array.
For multiple hosts to a single array, I recommend a fibre channel connection to a FC capable switch, and on to a FC connected array.
We used to use a HP P2000 (on old G1), but it's since been retired.  Worked pretty well once firmware was upgraded.  http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/disk-storage/product-detail.html?oid=4118559#!tab=features.  They can be connected via iSCSI, Fibre Channel or 6GB SAS so they are flexible and reasonably priced.
    Recommendations:
Use RAID 6 with your large disk arrays.  With large disks there is a measurable failure rate when rebuilding a failed RAID5 array based on MTBF.
Use smaller 15K disks in RAID 0+1 for speed on databases/Exchange.
Use slower 7.2K disks in RAID6 for file storage.
We are a small hospital and we have 3 VMware servers with dual CNA (FC and Ethernet in a single twinax cable) connections to 2 redundant Cisco Nexus 5K switches and then 4 Fibre Channel connections to an EMC VNX 5300.  It's extremely fast with about 50 virtual servers, but was quite an investment.  One thing we don't have to worry about is down time.  If there ever is an equipment failure, we have redundant everything, including power split between two UPSs.
Our VNX has 3 tiers of performance.  3 100GB SSD "Fast Cache" in RAID 1 with hot spare, to keep the most used data ready, but it's not really a tier, however one could be built utilizing the same disks.  A second tier is performance tier with a 8 600GB RAID 0+1 and hot spare.  The third is a bunch of 7.2K 3TB disks in RAID6.  The VNX autotiers, placing data on disks depending on where it's needed.  The volumes are sliced and diced automatically in the background to make this happen and we never have to touch it.  I used a demo of Solarwinds Storage Manager to monitor performance for a while and the utilization was always low, meaning all data access was fast, througout the day.

  • Using a 27" iMac as Monitor for PC

I am building a PC for Network Attached Storage (NAS) using FreeNAS:
    http://www.freenas.org/
Once it's all set up I'll just use the web/network interface to manage it.  But, as I assemble the PC I'll probably need a monitor to make changes to the BIOS settings.
I'm wondering whether I can use my iMac (iMac11,3) as a makeshift monitor for the PC.  Apparently it's possible to do this if the PC has a Mini DisplayPort.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
My PC has the followoing video ports:
    - VGA
    - DVI
    - HDMI
Can anyone tell me whether I can use my iMac as monitor to a PC with one of these ports?
If so, can anyone recommend a cable to do so?  For example, this Mini DisplayPort <-> HDMI cable says it won't work for my purposes:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2
"This device is not Bidirectional. It can only connect a Mini-DisplayPort source to an HDMI® display. It will not work in reverse."
I want to display my PC's VGA, HDMI, or DVI as the source to my iMac's Mini-DisplayPort, not the other way around.
    Thank you for your help.
      - nello

But that one doesn't support the 27" screen, you need Dual-Link DVI if it's going to work at all...
Note:  This product supports single-link DVI. Dual-link DVI and the Apple 27" Cinema Display are supported by the GTV-DVIDL-2-MDP.
    Which is even more money...

  • Using and LCD TV as a monitor for HDV editing

I'm editing in FCP studio 2 and shooting with the new Sony HVR-S270u cameras. I'm trying to figure out the best way to use my LCD TV as a monitor for HD. I know FCP will not playback through my camera in HDV but print to tape with it. I looked into the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro with HDMI. The problem is the camera doesn't have HDMI it SDI outputs so I'm capturing through firewire. I've been told that the Blackmagic card requires you to capture with it in order to playback with it. I know there is Matrox MXO but are there other options out there.
Can I use the LCD TV as a second monitor and do playback as Cinema Desktop Preview to second monitor? I've also seen a DVI - HDMI cable. Will that work? Any help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Mike

What format is the media in when you capture it?
Whatever you choose to capture it. You can capture it as HDV via firewire, or ProRes via firewire. Or you can use this card and choose one of the options it gives you...such as ProRes, DVCPRO HD, uncompressed HD...whatever you want, and your hardware can support.
I'm assuming it's no longer HDV.
Only if you don't capture it as HDV. You can still do that and then output via this card to some other format. Or you can capture as HDV, render to ProRes (in the sequence settings under RENDER CONTROL).
    Is it uncompressed HD?
    If you choose that.
Is there an Easy Setup for this?
    Yup.
    What codec does it use?
Whatever it lists in the Easy Setups...the ones I listed above.
They also state that you can use it for DV. I'm guessing that means if you have DV material and a device that outputs HDMI you have uncompressed SD?
First off, HDMI is an HD signal, not SD. BUT, you can use the card to output your DV timeline to your HDTV. You cannot output to an SD deck, as no SD decks have HDMI.
If you can import HDV via HDMI and you bypass the HDV codec and get full 1920 (as they say on their website)
Yup..you can capture as ProRes or Uncompressed, and get full 1080. BUT, this doesn't increase the resolution of your footage. It just means that it will render to a better codec with more color space...better manipulation of the image that HDV.
then I'm also guessing that you cannot go back to HDV.
Not via firewire. But if the deck had Component inputs, or HDMI...maybe.

  • New iMac as a monitor for XP Bootcamp on an old Air

    Hello all -
Need your assistance getting an accurate answer on an Apple related issue. Trip to the Apple store (including speaking to 5 employees, 2 of whom were genius bar staff) did not provide the clarity/certainty I am after. More on that later.
I have a work issued 11 inch Air (running XP via Bootcamp). I cannot boot the Apple OS, nor make any changes to the XP environment.
My Air is an "older" model: 11 inch with mini-display port, not the "spark" firewire port, but same size of course.
I am thinking about buying an iMac, which would be dual purpose...second computer and monitor for my Air. But I am unsure if an iMac will do this smoothly with my Air (or which model can or can't do it).
Let me tell you what I have done:
    - two visits to the Apple store
    - conversation #1 (yes, it will work...21 or 27 inch...no mention of firewire or mini-display issue, no issues with XP on Bootcamp)
    - conversation #2 (yes, but 27 inch only....it is ok that Air has mini-display and is using XP via Bootcamp)
    - conversation #3 (yes, but you need to buy an old model iMac that still has mini-display port, not firewire)
    - conversation #4 (no, it will not work with Bootcamp with any configuration)
    - conversation #5 (yes, will work with any 27 inch model...use mini-display to VGA (from Air), use firewire to VGA (from iMac), and then use a male-male VGA to connect the two
Apple has a knowledge base article on the topic, which offers yet another view. However only speaks to 2009 and 2010 models. I am unable to find a similar entry for current iMac models.
Using a 27-inch iMac (Late 2009 or Mid 2010) as an external display
Apple won't test any of this at the genius bar (well, the genius I had - conversation #4 above).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Dave

Are you talking about the Thunderbolt port on newer Macs? If so, see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775 & http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4617.
It appears you cannot use Target Display Mode with one of the newest Macs unless the other Mac also has a Thunderbolt port, & that only Windows 7 supports Thunderbolt, not Windows XP.

  • I need a good monitor for the retina macbook pro

What is a good monitor for the retina macbook pro. Im looking for 27 inch that is around the price of the thunderbolt display. The only thing putting me off the thunderbolt display is that i wouldnt be able to watch stuff on my xbox on it due to no hdmi.
Im going to university so it would be useful to be able to watch tv and play games on the monitor too but Im more interested in a monitor that will work great on the rmbp and on photoshop. I need to be able to calibrate it perfectly.

If I am understanding you correctly you should look at the 27 inch Samsung HD LED. Best Buy has it on sale for $340

  • How can i use my led tv as a monitor for my macbook?

hi everybody, I have a macbook and i'd like to use one of my tvs as a monitor, I have a Samsung led tv and a Philips 3d led tv but with the "mini display port to hdmi adapter" I'm not able to use my tv as a monitor for my macboo, is it possible or I cannot use my tv as a monitor?
    thanks
    Sonia

It would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

Can I use the same email address for multiple seats in Creative Cloud for Teams?

    No. http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html
Can I buy more than one membership to an individual offering of Creative Cloud?
No, Adobe has moved to identity-based licensing with a technology that will not support multiple same-product licenses, so you can buy only one membership per Adobe ID. If you need two Creative Cloud memberships, you will need to purchase each with a unique Adobe ID. You can also purchase a Creative Cloud for teams membership, which allows you to purchase and manage multiple seats under one account.

  • Can an iMac be used as a monitor for a Mac Pro?

    Hi all,
I'm getting nowhere looking in the search, so I'm hoping someone can clear something up for me:
is it possible to use an iMac as a display for a Mac Pro?
I am beginning to think I'd better get a Mac Pro, but I already have an iMac, for which I've been researching getting external storage so I can do Final Cut Studio editing and back up of it all... as someone suggested, might be better in the long run to just get it all in the Mac Pro, and have the option and simplicity to upgrade as and when... but then there's the need for a display for the Mac Pro, which does whack the price up... but if I could use this iMac, what a beautiful monitor...
I thought someone said that Final Cut would not allow another computer to be attached though... is that the case, anyone know?
Thanks for any knowledge and help, much appreciated... I'm learning to not rush into anything, as you learn more the whole picture seems to change!
    Cheers, Syd

The current 27-inch iMac can. Other iMac models can't outside of a VNC setup or ScreenRecycler; all such solutions require a standalone monitor for setup and troubleshooting.

  • Yosemite consolidating multiple desktops on dual monitors,

I have a Mac mini (mid 2010) - 2.4 GHz - 350 GB - Yosemite 10.10.2 - with dual LG monitors. Instead of using Mission Control I prefer to have multiple desktops on each monitor. I dedicate a single app to each desktop, e.g., Safari, iTunes & iPhoto on Mon1 facing Mail, Messages & Calendar on Mon2, and swipe between apps, which I find more convenient. Six numbered desktops plus Dashboard.
In Mavericks this arrangement was preserved on restart. However, in Yosemite, all apps on Mon2 are consolidated in a single desktop, the remaining 2 desktops - 4 & 5 - have migrated blank to Mon1, PLUS an additional blank desktop - 6 - is generated on Mon1. The single desktop on Mon2 is now 7. On subsequent restarts there become eight, then nine, then ten desktops, etc.
I've been up and down the settings options, tried System Help, outside searches, and even mentioned the issue in passing during an unrelated Apple Tech Support call. To no avail. I had hoped that one of the updates would resolve this. It is easily but inconveniently resolved manually, but as I mentioned this was a non issue in Mavericks.
I mentioned this problem in an earlier post, but in less detail. Has anyone else experienced or heard of this?

I did find a workaround........ that works so far....... If I put FCPX into full screen mode.  Then my events dissapear!!!!  But if I toggle on and off the "Window/Show Events in a separate window" menu then the Events reappear and I can swipe between desktops and all the windows behave as they should.  That's a relief.  The old method doesn't work but at least this one does.  I hope this helps someone who is swiping like a mad man like I was.
