Multiple Airport Express Units and Itunes

I have two Airport Express units, each is hooked up to a seperate stereo in the house. I tunes will connect with one or the other, but not both Airport Express units at the same time.
When selecting multiple speakers from the drop down box...the following error message is encountered..."The remote speaker "xxxx" does not support playback as a part of a group. Do you want to switch playback to it?"
Any help would be appreciated...when this is complete, the system will be doing exactly what I want.

The three most common problems encountered with mutiple AX's:
Itunes software (need 6.02 or better)
AX firmware (need 6.3)
Firewall (you must ALLOW UDP traffic)
If all these items are met then usually what remains is configuration and/or a range problem. Since it sounds as though it works singularly, range is not the issue. Check the three most common and if they are right you are left with re-configuring the network or possibly (but unlikely based on the post) a bad unit.

  • Multiple AirPort Express units - use more than one at a time?

If I connect three Airport Express units in three different rooms, can I use more than one at a time?
Can I choose to only use 2 out of the 3 at one time?
    Thanks.

Yes. With iTunes 6.0.2 or later, you can send an AirTunes stream to multiple remote AirPort Express units, provided that each AirPort Express has the latest AirPort firmware. The maximum number of remote AirPort Express units is three to six in typical conditions. The number that works for you will depend on your environmental conditions (such as building composition and local radio interference), distance to the remote AirPort Express units, and available network capacity relative to your other usage.

  • Using Multiple Airport Express units to play Music to Multiple Sound System

    Goal
    - play music on my iMac and in one other sound system(I'am aware of the one
    system limit )
    - I have multiple Airport Express units(3) for different sound systems and wish
to select the room using iTunes.
    Reality
if I reset all the airport express units in the house(3) I can initially see the units. On going through the setup I'am able to configure each unit to be part of my wireless network and get the airport express to power cycle. However after this process only the last AE unit is visable via itunes. If I use the airport utility it can find no units when scanning. If I power cycle one of the non visible units it becomes visable but I cannot play music to the unit and trashes the connectivity to the one working AE unit.
What am I doing wrong ?

Sorry - I led you astray unnecessary in my last posted message. The reference I provided was for setting up a remote base station. That is not applicable to your situation, so please ignore.
In your case, you want to use the Airport Utility to configure each Airport Express so that it "join" (and not "extends") your existing wireless network.
What I suggest you do is:
    1. get each Airport Express into a known default state by doing a factory default reset per these instructions. Hold down the reset button for 10-15 seconds, until you see four green flashes in rapid succession
    2. put all Airport Express devices, and the wireless Mac you are using to configure the Airport Expresses, into the same room as the wireless router you are using
    3. configure one Airport Express at a time, and as I said above use the Airport Utility to configure each Airport Express to "join" the existing wireless network - ie select your Airport Express device as shown in the Airport Utility, click the "Continue" button (not the Manual setup button), and follow the instructions. The name of the wireless network you are joining is the same as the name of the wireless network your existing wireless router is creating. Make sure you also specify the same security protocol (WEP/WPA) and wireless network password as your Mac requires to connect to your existing wireless network.

  • My Airport Express units and Apple TV are disappearing from my network for Airplay

I'm using a BT Home Hub (third generation) as the centre point of my network. The Airport Express Units, and the Apple TV, are connected to it wirelessly, using the 'Join A Wireless Network' option in the setup.
Although the units are visible on the network, they disappear from the Airplay menu on iOS devices and my MacBook Pro, and need to be rebooted to bring them back.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be?
The Apple TV Is now cabled to the router, which rectified a performance issue I had with it whereby films being streamed would stop periodically.
Prior to this, I had the devices wirelessly connected to, and extending, an Airport Extreme network, being broadcast from my Time Capsule. I had to change this however, as the Airport Express units did not play music smoothly and would also disappear from the Airplay menu. I figured that the Time Capsule was at fault, as it's around 4 or 5 years old, and has been showing signs of ageing for a while now, however this new problem has occured since.
I'm tempted to replace the Time Capsule, with a new Airport Extreme unit and external HDD unit to continue wireless Time Machine backup of my three Macs, but don't want to do this if not strictly necessary.

Is there a way to stream internet audio to these devices?
You might want to take a look at Airfoil for Mac to be able to stream any source on your Mac to the AirPort Express.

  • Setting Up a Three Station (Multiple AirPort Express Units) WDS Network

For a mission project in Northern Ireland, I am trying to connect three Airport Express units into a single wireless system. The mission group is located in an old building with thick walls, so the wireless signal needs to be "repeated." I need help on the basics of setting up all three AX units in a series. One will be located in an office on the ground floor an act as the main base station with an ethernet connection. (The mission has a cable modem/router with an independent line in the ofice that is connected directly to the AX unit in the office.) The second will need to act as a relay base station(it will be on the second floor of the building, but in range of the main base station) and the third as a remote base station down a hall on the second floor. In an initial setup, I was unable to have the main base station unit show up on the list of base statios when I did a scan in the AirPort Admin Utility.
Should I set up (configure) all three AX units in close proximity to each other and then relocate them to the final locations? I also need some advice on how to identify or assign the AirPort MAC Adress to the units. Finally, do I need to do a "hard reset" on the units and simply start over? I saw the Apple article on using WDS to create a network from multiple base stations, but it only dealt with two units. Thanks. Sawyerlex

  • Airport Express WDS and itunes

I must be an idiot! I have spent hours trying to configure my Airport express X2 for driving my stereo system as a remote node. The only way I can get it to work is to have two separate base stations and in that case, I can't get web connectivity at the same time. I have reviewed some of the existing discussions on this subject, but I don't understand the WDS vs. client distinction or how to set this right. Please help!

Unless you need to extend your wireless network or need to use a remote ethernet port there is no need to use WDS.
Reset both Airport Express (AX) units.
Configure the first AX as a wireless router connected to your internet connection.
Using the Airport Assistant, configure the second AX to join your existing wireless network (this is client mode)
You wouldn't need to extend your existing wireless network (WDS Mode) just to stream iTunes to your stereo.
    Hope that helps.

  • Multiple airport express units/multiple speakers

I saw a question and answer on this and now can't find it: I have two Express units on an Extreme network, want to stream the same iTunes signal to both of them (big house, two stereos.) How do I do this?

    Hi Stephen:
You will need the most recent version of iTunes installed.
AND the most recent AE firmware which can be found here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportexpressfirmwareupdate63formacosx.h tml

  • Multiple airport express clients dropping iTunes

Hello, I'm new to the board and appreciate the resource and any feedback you guys can provide.
My music is stored on the iMac and I'm trying to stream iTunes to two AX's and the music drops out often. They are both set up as clients. I have searched this forum extensively and think I have isolated the problem as one of the following:
Something to do with UDP protocal
    Linksys WRT51AB router settings
    512Mb RAM on iMac--too little?
    Here's my troubleshooting thus far:
Both airport expresses work by themselves in their current locations.
Locations are close to computer, 1st within 10 feet (1 wall), 2nd another 10-15 feet (2 walls)
Checked firewall settings and "Block UDP" box is unchecked
I tried to forward Port 6000 on my Linksys router based on some advice in another thread here to no avail
    AX Firmware 6.3
    iTunes 6.0.4
    OSX 10.4.6
    Thanks for the help
    G4 PB & Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks for the suggestion. I had not tried that option as I had read somewhere that there is only one Linksys router that supports this setup and it's not the one I have.
I will try the solution and report back. I assume an AX configured as a range extender can also function to stream iTunes?
Also, for clarification, I am using two airport expresses both of which to stream music. They access my network through my Linksys router hardwired to the iMac.
    Thanks.

  • Airport express/extreme and iTunes configuration

I recently purchased a Macbook Air 10.9.3, to replace my 7 year old white Macbook 10.6.8.  I connected the air to my home wireless network which was running through an Airport express (A1088).
Recently I started having issues with the network (having to restart the airport frequently).  In an attempt to troubleshoot this, I reset the airport extreme.
Bad idea.  After the reset, the Air would no longer find the airport Express "this version of airport utility doesn't support this base station".  I tried to use my old macbook (which has Airport utility 5.6.1) to configure it, but just couldn't get it right.  The more I messed around, the worse I think I made it.  I could get the airport and a network on the old macbook, but it wouldn't connect to the internet.
So after I ran out of ideas, I bought a new Airport Express.  That solved the internet problem on my new MB Air, but I still can't get the internet on the old Macbook - even with the new Airport express - I've obviously stuffed up a setting somewhere.
So, now that I had a redundant Airport express, I thought that I could use it to connect a speaker to for Airplay.
I've done another factory reset on the old Airport express and attempted (using the old macbook) to configure it using the instructions here... how to use my airport express just to stream music, no interent
    Current situation is:
    - I have internet on the Macbook Air via a new Airport Express
    - I have no internet on the old Macbook 10.6.8 but it can see the old Airport express (and also the network running from the new Airport that's working on the new MB Air)
    - I have a speaker connected to the Airport Extreme, but neither Mac can see the speaker (I'm assuming that I'll see the name of Airport in the airplay drop down?
    What I want is
    - To be able to use the Airport Extreme for Airplay
    - to get internet back on the old Macbook (any suggestions for something that I might have missed?)
Please be gentle, I am now confused and have found similar posts a bit too technical for me to understand or replicate.
For Airplay - Do I need to connect the Airports to each other?  Or do I need to just find a way to configure the old Airport Extreme using my old Macbook, so that I will be able to see it from the new Air and then I will be able to see the speaker in iTunes?
For the old Macbook that won't connect to the internet - I've tried the following:
    - matching the network settings that are working on the MB Air
    Nice basic instructions please!

    Additional information...
When I try to match the network settings from the MB Air on the old MB it tells me that another computer is already using this IP address.  These are the settings currently on the MB Air that are working.
These are the settings on the Airport Express..

  • HT4437 Streaming to multiple Airport express speakers via iTunes Match. How?

    How can I do this?

I have 2 Express units set up in my home, both signals are visible under the AirPort dropdown menu...
You have them configured to create separate wireless networks. That is why you can send the music to both of them simultaneously.
You need to configure one of them to join the network created by other one so that only one network name appears in the AirPort menu.

  • Strange Airport Express setting and iTunes

Here's the deal: I have set up my AE, a long time ago, to use an static IP address from the ISP and to distribute IP addresses using 10.0.1.1 scheme. Everything has worked flawlessly for 2 years or so. Now I moved and the connection sometimes drops, which led me to believe someone had hacked my password and was just using all my bandwidth (BTW, is there a utility that will let me check traffic?) so I decided to turn off the IP distribution and just use the static IP. Internet works fine but my iTunes speakers are gone, when I try to connect to them I get the error "the remote speakers are not compatible with this version of iTunes". Updated to latest software, both OS and iTunes, no go. Reverted to IP distribution, everything works again.
What's going on? How can I solve this?

xplan303ex, Welcome to the discussion area!
More than likely your original problem comes from RF interference. Other neighboring wireless networks and devices operating at 2.4 GHz can negatively affect your wireless network. Try changing the channel used until you find a channel which works better or you run out of channels.

If you want to keep your network secure, use WPA2 or WPA with a non-dictionary password.

  • Multiple Airport Express streams?

Is it possible to have more than one Airport Express Unit receiving different signals from different iOS devices? E.g. My iMac plays one track, my iPhone plays another and my iPad plays another?
I have a 4 input hub in my house powering 4 sets of ceiling speakers in various rooms and want to know if multiple Airport Express units mean I don't have to go down the Sonos route as all my music is on iTunes.
    Thanks in advance

I do this regularly. I have 5 AX units connected to various receivers around the house. I can stream to a subset of speakers from one device and have another device stream to others. I don't see why I couldn't stream five stream to these speakers.
But the big caveat is that most of my AX units are connected via a gigabit ethernet network not a wireless connection (yes I know the AX units are not gigabit, but my network is). If you were trying to do this via wireless you might quickly run out of bandwidth. This is particularly true for IOS devices. For example, I have an ipad that can stream internet radio. If you think about it the ipod  in this case has to first get the wireless signal and then send it back out to the AX, immediately doubling the amount of spectrum used compared to streaming from a device that has the music stored on it. That's probably why my internet radio app won't let me select multiple speakers the way I can with itunes or airfoil.

  • Airport express units no showing in airport utility

My airport extreme units are not showing up in the airport utility application.
I have an local wifi network established by linking an airport extreme to my ATT Universe router .  This works correctly and the signal is good in most parts of our home .   I had 2 airport express units acting as extension of the wifi network to the more distant areas.   Somehow we lost the entire network when we were gone on a trip and I had to reinstall the airport extreme (works fine).
I know I need to reinstall the airport express units and link them to the existing network ...but they aren t showing up in airport utility .  The normal process has been to reset them to their original configuration ,  then log on to them as a independent network ,then use airport utility to reset them as extensions to the existing wifi network.
Can t start unless they show up and they are a foot from my MacBook Pro .......I have 4 different units (only use two ) ?  Nothing shows up .
    What am I missing ?

Suggest that you work only with one AirPort Express (AX) at a time and leave the others powered off.
Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AX as follows:
    Power down the AX
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in while you plug the AX back in to power
Keep holding the reset button another 8-10 seconds then release
Allow 40-45 seconds for the AX to restart to a slow blinking amber light
At this point, the AX is producing a wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You need to first log on to this network from your Mac if you want to configure the AX using wireless.
Or, you can use the Ethernet cable method to configure the AX and then disconnect the Ethernet cable once you have the AX updated with new settings
Repeat the process above fo the second AX, but note that the Apple Network xxxxxx with have different letters and numbers, as it will be a different network.

  • AirTunes and multiple Airport Express modules

I was curious if there are plans to support connecting to multiple Airport Express modules? I have two modules in my home and would love to be able to send music to two different places at the same time.
If there is a plan to introduce this option I'd love to know and if I already can I'd love to know how.
    Thanks

I would love to know this as well.
I have just purchased an older home and re-wiring the
house is somewhat out of the question.
I purchased two AirPort Express modules's, but then
found out you can only play to one at a time. I
would love to be able to play one play list in the
basement and another in the living room upstairs
without having to run two iTunes.
Or at least play the same playlist to both at the
    same time?
I too would like to know this. I have an older home and would like the option of playing the same music throughout the house or in just one location.
Even being able to hear what is playing from the
iTunes player would be decent as well.
    Any thoughts?

I have 3 airport express units, an Ipod and a Windows 7 PC.  I used the PC to set up an iTunes/airTunes and the AirUtility can see all three of the expresses.  The Ipod displays all of the expresses and I can pick any one to stream music to. The PC won't - any ideas? AirUtility tells me the 7.5.2 version of the firmware is the latest for the expresses and ITunes is also reporting that there are no upgrades available.  I get an error code -15000 when I try to connect from the PC to one of the expresses.

How do I configure the AX to connect to the hub's wireless network? It will only scan one base station Airport Express at a time in the Airport Utility. I think what I am trying to do is use the hub as a router to the two AX's. Is there a specific way to set this up?
To set up the AX to join a wireless network as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    Launch the AirPort Utility.
    Select the AX.
If not already connected to the AX's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
Wireless Security: None OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
Password: <enter your wireless network security password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX.
