Multiple airports and streaming

I have an airport extreme for my wireless network. I also use an airport express to stream music to my living room. This is a two part question.
1.If i wanted to stream music to another room would I simply buy another express? does it get configured with a separate "identity". Can my mac stream to both airport express at the same time?
2. In order to have minimal wiring, and since i just want this second set of speakers for a small bathroom, does it make sense to buy a small set of USB port laptop speakers and plug them into the USB port on the airport express or must i use the mini plug socket.
thank you

Yes, yes, and yes.

Speakers must be connected to the audio out port on the AirPort Express (AX).
The AX's USB port is ONLY for a single compatible printer.

  • Multiple Airport Express streams?

Is it possible to have more than one Airport Express Unit receiving different signals from different iOS devices? E.g. My iMac plays one track, my iPhone plays another and my iPad plays another?
I have a 4 input hub in my house powering 4 sets of ceiling speakers in various rooms and want to know if multiple Airport Express units mean I don't have to go down the Sonos route as all my music is on iTunes.
    Thanks in advance

I do this regularly. I have 5 AX units connected to various receivers around the house. I can stream to a subset of speakers from one device and have another device stream to others. I don't see why I couldn't stream five stream to these speakers.
But the big caveat is that most of my AX units are connected via a gigabit ethernet network not a wireless connection (yes I know the AX units are not gigabit, but my network is). If you were trying to do this via wireless you might quickly run out of bandwidth. This is particularly true for IOS devices. For example, I have an ipad that can stream internet radio. If you think about it the ipod  in this case has to first get the wireless signal and then send it back out to the AX, immediately doubling the amount of spectrum used compared to streaming from a device that has the music stored on it. That's probably why my internet radio app won't let me select multiple speakers the way I can with itunes or airfoil.

  • Connecting to multiple Airport Express base stations for internet and TV?

I want to be able to use wireless internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time, but I only have a single ethernet connection behind my stereo and it's connected to the Pay TV. My options seem to be an ethernet splitter (maybe - any ideas?), getting a new ethernet connection installed behind the stereo so I can insert this into the same Airport Express base station I use for my music, or buying a second Airport Express base station and connecting it to one of the other internet connections in the room, then connecting to both Airport Express base stations at the same time.
Is this possible? Are there other alternatives?
    Many thanks

Nate, Welcome to the discussion area!
Once you have a network, you can connect multiple AirPort Express (AX) to that network (wirelessly or via Ethernet). When your computer joins that network it can access all the AX.
You could take your current internet connection and run it into an inexpensive router with multiple Ethernet ports (not the AX). If this is a wireless router then your AXs could be located elsewhere and connect as wireless clients to that network. Once you computer joined that network it could stream music to the AXs.

  • Can I use airport express to extend my network AND stream iTunes???

I have an airport extreme connected to the cable modem and sending a signal out to my home network. I also have a powerbook and an airport express connected to the home stereo.
My question is, can i use the express to extend my extreme signal (to reach the back yard) and stream music from itunes at the same time? The set up utility seems to suggest that you do one or the other.
    Thanks!

Are you sure you configured the Express to extend the Extreme's network? If you use the standard setup, the two base stations will be indistinguishable, i.e. you'll only see one entry for the wireless network.
If you were connected to the Extreme when you configured the Express, try turning off Airport in the Airport menu and then turning it back on. The computer should pick up the stronger signal at that point.

  • Greetings: I have multiple iPads and iPhones. I want all to be able to be able to stream to our Apple TV. All of the docs I see say you must have the same Apple ID for all the devices, but we each have our own Apple ID. Is this just a doc short coming?

You can each have your own ID for your own iTunes accounts, but in order for a device to stream via AirPlay to the same Apple TV, everything must use the same homesharing ID. This is not the same as your iTunes account ID (although it can be for one of the devices)

  • Multiple bitrate encoder creates 3 seperate events and streams instead of a single event.

I'm using the Niagara 4100 streaming appliance to encode a live multiple bitrate streams for an event. The problem is the Niagara encoder doesn't allow me to attach an event name to the stream url like - 'streamevent%i?adbe-live-event=liveevent', instead it only allows 'streamevent%i'. So in the end I get three seperate events with a stream for each event.
    Like so:
    Example:
    /Events/streamevent1/MNMMNNMxxxxx.stream
    /Events/streamevent2/MNMMNNMxxxxx.stream
    /Events/streamevent3/MNMMNNMxxxxx.stream
    AND
    /Streams/streamevent1/files…
    /Streams/streamevent2/files…
    /Streams/streamevent3/files…
Is it possible to make it work this way without using the 'adbe-live-event' parameter using the .f4m manifest file?
    Thanks,
    Dave

There is a workaroud available but you can try using Flash Media Live Encoder, which is a free tool for better results. Surf to - C:\FMSHOME\samples\applications\livepkgr directory and you will find a main.asc file in there. This is the server side scripting file that is attached to the livepkgr application.
In this, edit the var liveEventName variable and set it to the event you want to attach your streams to eg - "liveevent".
Now create a separate copy of your livepkgr application inside C:\FMSHOME\applications\ like livepkgr_mbr and replace the main.far file with the main.asc you just edited. Now while publishing, connect to this application livepkgr_mbr and just specify the stream name - livestream%i. Check your permissions before starting the recording.
This should work for you. But please remember that doing this will cause all your streams to be associated with the same event - liveevent as you are hard coding that inside the main.asc file. So its best to keep a separate application just for this purpose.

  • Multiple AirPort Express speakers disappear and/or stop working on iTunes

I have three AirPort Express with iTunes boxes. They are wired to my LAN (using the ethernet port). Not to long ago I noticed that there was an update for them and I updated them to V6.3.
Things seemed to be fine. In the meantime, I just happened to notice that the latest iTunes allows me to multicast to multiple remote speakers. So, I started using this multicast (I assume it's multicast) feature to hook up to a couple of remote speakers. Everthing worked fine and has worked fine for several days.
Then this morning, I noticed that two of the remote speakers didn't show up and the third airport showed up, but had a greyed exclamation point after it and I also noticed that the speakers weren't working on that remote airport. When I unchecked the remote speaker in iTunes, it completely disappeared.
The three airport express boxes seem to be working (they're all solid green), but the remote speakers don't work. I realize that just having a solid green doesn't necesarily mean they're working, but well, that was the extent of my investigation. Anyway....
I brought up the airport admin tool and didn't really know how to reset the airport without changing something so I changed the text in the location field and updated the airport. Once I did this the remote speaker showed up in iTunes, so I reset all of the airports and this seemed to get the remote speakers to showup again. I'm sure a power cycle would work as well, but I was too lazy to walk all over the house and power cycle them.
Does anyone know if this is a known problem or is there something that I've got configured wrong?
Mac mini & Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The three most common problems encountered with mutiple AX's:
Itunes software (need 6.02 or better)
    AX firmware (need 6.3)
Firewall (you must ALLOW UDP traffic)
If all these items are met then usually what remains is configuration and/or a range problem. Since it sounds as though it works singularly, range is not the issue. Check the three most common and if they are right you are left with re-configuring the network or possibly (but unlikely based on the post) a bad unit.

  • AirTunes and multiple Airport Express modules

I was curious if there are plans to support connecting to multiple Airport Express modules? I have two modules in my home and would love to be able to send music to two different places at the same time.
If there is a plan to introduce this option I'd love to know and if I already can I'd love to know how.
    Thanks

I would love to know this as well.
I have just purchased an older home and re-wiring the
house is somewhat out of the question.
I purchased two AirPort Express modules's, but then
found out you can only play to one at a time. I
would love to be able to play one play list in the
basement and another in the living room upstairs
without having to run two iTunes.
Or at least play the same playlist to both at the
    same time?
I too would like to know this. I have an older home and would like the option of playing the same music throughout the house or in just one location.
Even being able to hear what is playing from the
iTunes player would be decent as well.
    Any thoughts?

  • Airport issues and streaming music

Hi all, after quite a bit of frustration with my AX, which I might add, worked well for years, I installed a NetGear wireless modem and am very happy with it.
One issue is that previously, when the AX connected with ethernet cable to my router, I was streaming music around the house, something I really enjoyed. This AX has now been removed.
I assumed that it was possible to connect the second AX to my new wireless network. (created with the new NetGear)
Not so, Airport utility still recognised the second unit and I proceeded to complete the process. But the AX would not re-start. Now, admittedly I only tried it once, but is it possible to still connect the second AX to my wireless network, and stream music, via AirTunes?
Appreciate any comments....am I trying to do the impossible?

    Ronald,
Have you reset the Airport Express?
Then try and join your new network.... which is now the NetGear...
I am running 3 Airport Express units to 3 different stereos and they all work fine. Even though I have a different Main Base station than you have, you should be able to "Join" your network.

  • Help! data manipulation for high speed streaming to disk from multiple boards and multiple channels

I am using Labview 7.1 and have been trying to capture data from 12 channels simutaneously sampled at 2MS/s each and streaming to disk for up to a minute or more.  The hardware I am using is 2 x PXI 6133 S series boards with a MXI4 link to a Pentium D 2.8 Ghz machine with 2Gb ram.   I have 2 sata drives set up in a raid 0 configuration which should give me hard disk write speed faster or equal to the MXI-4 transfer speed.
I have first started off by using the example code "multi device sync - analog input- cont acquisition" which has enabled me to sync the two boards and sample at the required speed.
To stream the data to disk, I have first merged the data from each board  together to save it to one file.  I have tried using the storage vi's but I end up with a Daqmx read error (trying to read data that is no longer available).  I have played around with the read data size to the point that I either get a insufficient memory error, or I get the "trying to read data that is no longer available"  error.  I have also tried using the file IO blocks with some success and have found that I have been able to stream to disk only if I configure the daqmx read block to output the data in "raw 1D I16" format and plugging it into the file-write block.  In doing this, I have noticed that using  multiple channels on one daqmx read task, I will get all the channels in one 1D array rather than a 2D array organized by channels.  This makes it messy to read at the end of this, and I also don't want to write another vi to separate the channels, due to the high chance of getting the data mixed or messed up if I happen to change the number of channels on a board
Is there a cleaner way of streaming this data to disk and keeping the channel data separated from each other?, and/or is there a better way to capture and handle the data I need?
I have attached the vi which I have got to consistantly work streaming to disk using the raw 1D I16 format.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

    Hi,
    i can suggest following
Refer to an example VI called as "High speed data logger.VI"  in conjunction with "High Speed data logger reader.vi" in Labview examples. Alhrough the logger might be in Tradiditional Daq format, it can be quite easily converted to Daq Mx format to store data in Binary (I32 format) . I have used this for many of my applications and i have found that the data retrieved does not have any "messups".
Why not keep a seperate file for each card? This way, you do not have to load your application with extra process. You only have to acquire and save. After saving in Binbary format, you can retrive it offline, convert it to ascii format and merge the data files of various cards to get one consolidated ascii data file.
    hope this helps
    Regards
    Dev

may I have my ipod touch in the universal doc and stream to an airport in the same moment? Can I stream from my Ipod touch to two airports simultanouesly?

Thank you edex76 for your answers!
Maybe I haven't been precise enough in the first question: When the ipod touch is in the universal doc and plays music, is it htan possible possible to stream music to an APE and hear music that comes from universal doc by chinch cable?
And on the scond: Do you think one could name the two APE in the very same way? Maybe that would help to stream to two APE in the very same moment ..?
    Cheers!

  • Can I stream from my iPad to multiple airport express points?

I have just set up 3 airport expresses around the home and have worked out how to use the laptop (holding my iTunes library) and the home sharing function to stream the music to the 3 speaker points and control the volume individually.  I have also got the Remote App that makes me more in control.
Am I able to effectively lose the laptop from the set up and stream from my iPad to the 3 speaker points and control the volume at each? It just seems logical that it should be possible becasue what is the point of having the laptop on when I have the whole library on the iPad.
Any advice would be great, thanks.

Then perhaps I misunderstood this line with my poor Englsih.
Currently, you can only stream media from Apple-sanctioned apps like YouTube, though Sadun notes that this field widens if you choose to jailbreak your device and install AirVideoEnabler.
As the resident expert, would you tell us which apps to download and install on which device. I find it a bit confusing.

  • Airport Express to extend network and stream music at the same time?

Hi. I have an Airport Extreme base station (primary wireless access point) and an Airport Express. Currently I connect my Hi-Fi to the Airport Express and stream music from iTunes, but I would like to also make use of its Ethernet port to connect other wired devices to my network. Is this possible; can it be used for both simultaneously? I've tried various configurations but not managed to achieve this.

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you have an AirPort Extreme(n) and AirPort Express(n), the ethernet port for the Express will be active if you "Enable ethernet client" during setup using AirPort Utility.
It sounds like you have either the "g" version of the Extreme or Express or both. Both devices must be "n" capable to use this option. If you don't see an option on the Wireless setup page of the Express to "Enable ethernet client", you have a "g" Express and this function is not available with your device.

  • Multiple Airport Express issues revisted

I've been trying to set up multiple airport expresses. I want to wirelessly connect to two stereos and stream to both at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
So far I tried the directions below. But after following them, when I was in itunes, it would not acknowledge either AX. When I was making the suggested settings in the Airport tab, as listed below, it asked me for the name of the network. I wasn't sure what to put there though.
I can set up each on its own network, but then itunes can only find one stereo at a time.
    Thanks for you help.
For each AirPort Express Base Station (AX):
    Perform a "factory default" reset
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
    - Select "Multiple Speakers" from the speaker selection at the bottom of the iTunes window.

You need to have one of the AirPort Express (AX) join the wireless network created by the other one. See KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.
