Multiple Albums in Cover Flow View

I am running iTunes 7.3.2, and I am experiencing a strange "problem" with Cover Flow View.
A number of albums that I have downloaded from the iTunes store show up with 2 albums in Cover Flow View. In fact, it always appears to be 1 Album Cover for Track 1 of the Album and a 2nd Album Cover for the remaining tracks.
They are not compilations, and I have checked that the Album, Artist and Album Artist are all the same. In addition, it is only happening with 1 artist: Ali Farka Touré. All three albums: Niafunké, The Source and Talking Timbuktu do the exact same thing. This is true no matter what sorting I use, or even if I use search to limit the list to 1 album.

Mark Verschell wrote:
Well, solved this one myself. First let me add that in Album View, it showed up as 2 albums also (track 1 in one album, tracks 2..n in a second album)
I went back and looked carefully and the ONLY difference in these albums was that the Artist Name (and in one case, also the Album) contained an accented e (é).
I selected all the tracks from an Album, did a Get Info, changed the é to an e in the Artist and Album Artist fields - and poof (or poofé) - one album. Then, I selected them all again, and changed the e BACK to an é - and it stayed in one album.
That sounds to me like Cover Flow somehow registered the "é" in most tracks but thought it was an "e" in some. The same thing happens with capitalization — if you change "Rage Against the Machine" to "Rage Against The Machine", most of iTunes will see the change immediately, but Cover Flow will sometimes continue to display the lower-case "the" until you whack it a few times. Since a difference in capitalization (or accenting) of a single letter will make two fields non-matching in iTunes's eyes, that could cause Cover Flow to split an album into "Rage Against the Machine" and "Rage Against The Machine" tracks.
I have lots of accented letters in my library, and haven't seen this splitting behavior; I think the problem stems from different parts of iTunes having different rules for calling two fields identical.

  • How to show one album art image for a compilation album in cover flow view?

I just finished getting album art for my entire music collection. Now I go to the Cover Flow view or the Album view and individual songs in compilation albums each have their own album art instead of being grouped together under the same album art. For instance I have a "Buddha Bar" Album with various artists. Instead of having one image for the album, each artist has his or her own image (all the same Buddha Bar album art). So a compilation CD with various artists ends up having 15 images instead of one image in the Album art or Cover Flow view which makes it harder to look through my albums. Does anybody know if it is possible to change this?

iTunes doesn't have the ability to do what you want, i.e. to define multiple separated values in a field and then have the item show up when looking at a selection based on each of those values. "Bob Dylan", "The Band" and "Bob Dylan & The Band" are three distinct values that can't be linked together. Sort values can change where in a list things are displayed but shouldn't be used to attempt to merge different values as results are undefined and unpredictable.

  • One song played from album in cover flow view

In the iTunes ‘cover flow view’ when I click on any album it only plays one of the songs from the album and then randomly chooses another song from my library. To play a song in the album other than the one listed first in my library I have to click on the song itself, I can’t just click on the album and have it play like a cd. Why won’t it play all of the songs from that album? (The songs on the album are by the same artist and the artist names are not spelled differently.)

Sounds like random play is turned on.

  • Songs from a single album STILL split up (multiple albums in cover flow)

I performed the steps listed in the FAQ to consolidate files of this sort (select all files in the Album, do a "Get Info", and make sure all Album/Album Artist/Artist entries are the same), but the multiple albums I see in cover flow are still there. Has anyone had this problem?

One other place it might cause them to break up are the disc _ of _ fields and the Track _ of _ fields.
If they are different from track to track, that might do it. Select all the tracks again, do a Get Info on the bunch. disc _ of _ fields should all be blank, but just in case one or more does have that filled in, but not all of them, go ahead and check the little check marks next to those two fields to reset them ALL to blanks.
Then for the Track _ of _ fields fields, if the second one is not filled in, that could be a problem. It should show the total number of tracks in the CD. So 10, 12, etc. whatever the total number is, if it is NOT there, then fill it in.
OK out of the album. Any better? If not, then next check the track numbers. Go to the first track, select, Get Info, and make sure it is set for Track 1 of X fields (where X is of course the total number of tracks. If it is OK use the NEXT button on the bottom of that window to advance to the next track and go through each one in turn making sure they are all set correctly (1, 2, 3, etc.).

Albums that feature a mixture of artists cause the sorting/grouping in iTunes to split an album even if it is marked as a compilation. A particularly good example of such an Album is Queen's Greatest Hits III which features 'guest' artists like David Bowie. This album would still be considered to be a Queen album but the artist of some tracks would not be Queen.
Microsoft of all people, came up with a solution for this which was to add an additional meta tag for albums called "Album Artist" as opposed to the normal "Artist" tag (which is used to indicate the Artist of a particular track).
Apple after receiving requests from people (including myself) added support for this Album Artist tag in iTunes 7 but unfortunately only did half the job. With iTunes 7 you can now see and edit this tag but you cannot browse or sort by this tag. Therefore when you browse or sort by Artist, iTunes is using the "Artist" tag and not the "Album Artist" tag and hence your tracks are not sorted as you expected and albums like Queen's Greatest Hits III still get split up.
The ONLY way to get iTunes to display albums properly grouped is to sort by the Album name, if you do this then Cover Flow will only display each album once (as you would expect).
Windows Media Player (unlike iTunes) does let you browse by Album Artist.
Note: If you have more than one Album with the same name e.g. "Great Hits" things may once again get interesting, I work around that by adding a space character at the end of the name so "Great Hits" and "Great Hits " are considered different.

Hi. I am having an issue with music on my IPod. It would probably be easier to explain my specific issue: I have songs by Band of Horses from Cease to Begin. When viewing my albums through cover flow, it shows Cease To Begin as two separate albums, one with only Islands on the Coast, and the other having Islands on the Coast with 3 other songs. If I delete the album with only one song from my IPod, it deletes the song from the other "album" as well. If I go to "All Songs" by Band of Horses, it only shows one Islands on the Coast, so it is not a duplicate issue. Also, in Itunes, it only shows one album. I just recently updated to iOS5 on my 4th Gen IPod Touch, if that helps.

Hello APVzW, we absolutely want the best path to resolution. My apologies for multiple attempts of replacing the device. We'd like to verify the order information and see if we can locate the tracking number. Please send a direct message with the order number so we can dive deeper. • Can Cover Flow view be limited to playback of only one album at a time?

    Hi all,
I've been using the Cover Flow view in my iTunes Library more and more lately (after years of suffering owning a slow machine). But there has been a question regarding playback that has been slightly nagging me for a little while. I couldn't come up with effective search results, so I'll pose the question to the masses.
Cover Flow playback (by default) seems limited to playing through one album and jumping straight into the next album in the Library without stopping. Scroll through the track listing in the lower screen and you'll notice that iTunes lists every track from every album in your Library.
(picture one of those digital bar jukeboxes and an unlimited bankroll...)
Conversely, when clicking the album's title in the default List view, iTunes will only play the tracks in that particular album's playlist, and stop playback once this is finished. I have grown used to this option when desiring to fall asleep to one particular album only... and not the 476 albums which follow it.
Is there a workaround in place to emulate this "List View" playback behavior for Cover Flow playback?
Just curious... if not, it isn't the end of the world - List View will still continue to serve its specific purpose for my needs.
I just have a thirst for knowledge.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Jeremy,
Conversely, when clicking the album's title in the default List view, iTunes will only play the tracks in that particular album's playlist, and stop playback once this is finished.
I'm not sure I follow you here — if I click a track in list view, iTunes always goes on to the next track when it's over (assuming Shuffle is off). If that's the next track on an album, great, but when I come to the end of an album it moves on to the next one.
Or are you talking about the Browser? Selecting an album in the Album browser pane will indeed produce the results you're describing, since the rest of your library will be excluded.
Yes that's correct - my apologies, I was at work at the time and was working from memory. I've had the Browser enabled since day one that it almost becomes second nature.
My iTunes interface, while displaying in List mode with the Browser active, limits the upper display fields to only Artist and Album panes.
And exactly as you said, once the album finishes playing, iTunes ceases playback.
Is there a workaround in place to emulate this "List View" playback behavior for Cover Flow playback?
Yes, but it's a bit clunky: use the Search box to narrow down your library until only one album is displayed.
Yes you are correct - it is a bit clunky. But it does work for the most part, provided that the album title is unique from a song title on another album.
    Thanks for the info Jeremy!

  • Annoying bug: Duplicate albums in the Cover Flow view

When viewing my music via the Cover Flow view (sorting Album by Artist) I frequently come across an album that appears twice. For example, I see two copies of Florence and the Machine's "Lungs" side by side. The first copy contains the first track on the album and the second copy has the remainder of the album.
My first thought was "Oh, I must have mislabeled the album field of that first track so it's being saved as a different album... maybe I put in an extra space or something." But when I view the album in the Finder, all the tracks are in the same album folder. Just to be sure, I selected all the tracks on the album in iTunes and made sure the Album info field was correct, checked the checkbox, and clicked OK. Still nothing changes.
I was finally able to fix this by selecting all the tracks on the album in iTunes and changing the Album info field to a completely NEW name (in this example "Lungs TEMP", then selecting them all again and renaming them BACK to the CORRECT name (Lungs). Ta da... Yea. Now there's only one "Lungs" album in Cover Flow.
No big deal if I only had to do this once, but this bug exists all over the place! 11,000 songs is a lot to sort through. It's almost like iTunes is caching bad data somewhere, but I don't know how to delete this cache.
Ideas? Anyone else seen this behavior?

It happens... See http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp for more.

  • Cover flow view of music albums

In Music, when I turn my phone sideways now I don't get cover flow view of albums.  Help!  Does anyone know how to change this back?

It's OK - I've worked it out.   Orientation Lock was on.

  • Album Cover Flow View Option????

I just updated to 11.0.4 version.  What happened to the album cover flow view option in Music?  Is it no longer an option?  If so, I'm NOT happy. The "juke box" feel was nice to flip through and easy for younger kids & grandparents to browse library.  I might have to revert back to earlier version.   Am I missing something?  Thanks for any input!

yeah they got rid of it in the new version which is stupid, because when i just have it up while doing other things i like to see the cover art and it's much easier to look through.
i'm just sorta stuck with a plain text list. it ***** and is ugly. i wish i hadn't of upgraded.

  • Album View and Cover Flow View are not available in iTunes 7

    Hi,
When I connect my iPod, in the iTunes 7, the options for Album view and Cover Flow View are disabled for the song list on my iPod. I only have a list view for them. However, at the same time, the songs on the library can be viewed in any of the three (3) views.
What might be the possible reason and is there any options to view your iPod songs in Cover Flow View in iTunes (while it is connected)?
Please solve this query of mine.

It just simply not a feature. You might think about requesting it here:

I have a tiny problem that is driving me mad. When I am playing an album in iTunes using cover flow view (with the playlist beneath the artwork picture) the  picture is exactly above the album title. All is symmetrical. When I switch to full screen display, the artwork moves a couple of inches to the left and the display is therefore asymmetrical. Why and how do I correct it? It would drive you mad to.
    Thanks for any help,

I was having the same problem, but tried the "Top Button + Home Button" reset and that did work for me. My unofficial guess is that perhaps RAM caches get filled through daily use of various apps leaving no memory for cover flow. Resetting the phone on the phone itself seems to reset that RAM. I can't say it's a cure-all, but it solved my issue. Hope this helps.

  • Problem w/ cover flow view

To begin I'd like to say I'm not new to message boards and even a forum moderator for the company Streetglow. I've searched for hours trying to figure out my cover flow problem and I just can't get it to organize the way I like. I've had a few problems with itunes in the past but a store rep fixed them within minutes. This is my first big problem.
A few days ago I moved my entire library (I only have music files) to my external HD. The move went flawlessly and itunes even deleted itself in my "My Music" folder. Weird but everything was fine and I checked a song's location and saw that the location lead to my external. This is where the problem starts.
Yesterday, I opened itunes and my entire library is empty. It's as if I just installed itunes on my computer.
So, I re-imported all my files again and went to my cover flow view and I have multiple album art covers for each song. But, if I go to the grid view, its exactly how I want it. Artist....Album...in ascending order. But if I switch to cover flow, I have close to 500 album art covers.
Prior to this, every time I imported a CD, I filled out the info entirely. Kept the artist, and album artist the same. Cover flow view was perfect before this incident.
Now, I have to use the grid view because it's the way I'd like but I would like to use the cover flow.
    Any ideas?

The albums will only stay grouped together when sort as *Album, Album by Artist* or *Album by Year*. Sort on Track title or Track No. and the order of covers will be pretty random. Sorting as Album by Artist groups all albums by the same alphbetically which tends to work for most people. What cues are your browsing for? Artwork, Album title, Artist, Track Name. You can use the search box to type in part of a track name if you're trying to find something specific. If you're just flicking through for something to take your fancy you might find grid mode more useful.

  • Cover Flow view in iTunes 7

I really like the cover flow view but it seems the albums are keyed on Artist so if different tracks have different artists, they show up as multiple albums in the cover flow view. Is there any way to make it key on Album name instead?
iMac 20" Core Duo 2M   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   300G Seagate external HD

Below the cover view is the track listing which has all the columns as usual - simply click the column title to sort by that field.
If the album has different artists then make sure the 'group compilations' option is ticked in preferences and then go into the info for the tracks and select 'part of a compilation'. iTunes will then group the tracks into a single album and display 'various artists' as the artist.
There is also now a field called 'album artist' which sets an artist for an entire album.

  • Cover Flow view bug

Is there a better place than this to submit bug reports to Apple?
Problem: Multiple albums named the same (i.e. Greatest Hits) by different artists have problems in Cover Flow view. The albums have separate cover art, but when selecting the album to look at songs in the album, all songs on every album named the same show up. This can't be what Apple had in mind, since in iTunes, the Cover Flow view sort default is "Album by Artist", and it's not a problem seeing other artists albums named the same. This is also a problem in Album view, where there is only one entry for all albums named the same (i.e. Greatest Hits).
Solution? Add secondary search criteria (artist) for both Cover Flow and Album views. This way, each album is a separate entry (album view) and has only the correct songs (cover flow view).
Love the Nano 3rd gen, but this bug is very blatant and should have been fixed prior to release. Apple, please fix it. I don't want to have to rename all my albums "xxxxxxx's Greatest Hits"!

Quick follow up. Is there a setting in the Nano to fix this (sort by option)?
