Multiple app icons on dock

When I have multiple excel spreadsheets open (for example), it puts them all under one icon. With this, I cannot alt tab between them. Can I specify to have each program launch a new icon on the dock or another way to get what I want?
Thanks!

In addition, the All Windows function of Exposé will show all application windows. I think the default is F9, but you can set it to what you want in the Spaces & Exposé system preferences.

  • App icon in Dock dims when it has a hidden window

I have learned that when you open a photo in Preview, for example, then hide the open Preview window using Command+H, the Preview icon on the Dock will dim to indicate the app has a hidden window. Snow Leopard does not seem to do this for me, but it does work on a friend's Mac. Is this a bug or a setting somewhere to turn this icon dim feature on? Anyone?
    Thanks.

Does Apple document anywhere on its web site or otherwise what an App's hidden's features are that would have to be turned on/off with Terminal? I would be nice to know what other features we can do on the Mac that just aren't available in menus, etc., except in Terminal.

  • Disappearing System App icons in Dock

I can't get 'PREVIEW' and 'TEXT EDIT' apps to stay in my dock. I drag them in and they stay in place for about ten seconds before disappearing. They disappear even if the application is open. This only happens on my Mac Book. I am up to date with snow leopard and this doesn't happen on my iMac. I tried disk utility and permissions repair and have restarted several times but these little essential apps to me won't stay in line! I have removed some icons to be sure it wasn't a space issue.
Thanks for any help in advance.

I am having the same problem as of today. This is happening to ONLY Aperture.... I have tried to restore my library using "commandoptionclick aperture", for the few seconds it is visible in my dock, but Aperture just opens right up.
    Things I have tried:
    Delete the two files:
    com.apple.dock.db
    com.apple.dock.plist
Open terminal and type (with caps and space):
    Killall Dock
    And
Moved: "MacintoshHD/System/Library/SyncServices/AutoRegistration/Clients/com.apple.doc k" to the trash and restarted before messing with anything. As soon as I restart and disconnect from the network I try to place Aperture back in the dock and it either disappears within seconds or disappears on close even after I select "Keep In Dock".
Someone help, I always am able to figure out this stuff on my own but NOTHING has worked and its only Aperture at this point which leads me to believe it is Aperture and nothing to do with my dock.

  • App.icon for dock

How can I create an applications icon to keep in my dock; right now I have to go to my finders icon in the dock to access the application folder. It would be easier to access it directly from the dock.
    thanks.

To put the Applications folder on the Dock, just drag it onto the Dock on the right side of the line, near the trash can. (Or below the line, if you're using the Dock on the left or right side.) To put a specific application on the Dock, drag it to the other side of the line.
Note that putting things on the Dock does not mean you have two copies... don't go delete the "originals" thinking that you've now got a copy on the Dock, because what's on the Dock just points to the original.

  • Question marks replaced app icons on dock

I downloaded Skype and VLC on my MBP retina, and when I went to Finder and ejected the disks, two gray question marks popped up on my dock, where Skype and VLC should've been.
I didn't have this problem on my old MacBook; how do i solve this problem?

I had the same problem and have left it ever since I upgraded this less than 1 year old machine.
It has quietly frustrated me, but I have been so busy I hadn't time to worry about such a small inconvenience, I thought it may take days to solve.
You just solved it for me in moments!
Thank you mende1 from me too.

  • App icon on Dock

can i make the date stay acurate even after ive quit the program?
or does it have to stay all the time as JUL 17 ?

An application's icon can only be updated when the application is running. Therefore, you can choose to…
    • launch it a startup or login and never quit it, hiding it upon auto-launch if you wish, or
    • you can install an application like MenuCalendarClock for iCal to place an auto-updating icon in your menu bar:
    http://www.objectpark.net/mcc.html
Because MenuCalendarClock is a different process and is always running, it maintains an accurate date display in the menu bar icon even when iCal is not.

  • I downloaded mountain lion on my iMac, but the app icon keeps saying i need to download it.  It's working fine otherwise.

I have downloaded and am successfully running Mountain Lion on my iMac.  The app icon in dock keeps showing a red circle that tells me to download Mountain Lion (not an update)!!!  When I go there they want the 19.99 to install just as if there is no record that I already have paid and downloaed the new OS.

Remove the icon from the Dock and post the results from Apple menu ->About this Mac.

  • PLEASE help!! I use Outlook for my email and the Mail App Icon in my dock was also storing all my emails. So, I tried to delete ONLY the emails in the Mail App but somehow (under Preferences maybe?) I also deleted all my emails in my Outlook inbox.

PLEASE help!! I use Outlook for my email and the Mail App Icon that is in my dock, that I know nothing about, was also storing all my emails. So, I tried to delete ONLY the emails in the Mail App but somehow (under Preferences maybe?) I also deleted ALL my OUTLOOK emails in my inbox.  Can someone please please tell me if there is a way to get my Outlook inbox emails back OR EVEN the emails that were in my Mail app - because even tho I never use the Mail app, at least the emails would be there.
When I was trying to delete the emails in my inbox for the Mail app - I followed THESE directions.  It did in fact clear my inbox for the Mail app.  But then I went to log on to my Outlook account and EVERY SINGLE EMAIL was gone.  And not in the Deleted box.  Just gone.  Here are the directions I followed that screwed everything up.  Please help.
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors.
Uncheck "Store deleted messages on the server".
At the drop list for "Permanently erase deleted messages when", choose "Quitting Mail".
    Next...
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > General.
At "When searching all mailboxes, include results from", uncheck "Trash".
    Select All = command A

    i found out my prob!
    here is what you do.
go to the "system preferences" on your dock.
    click "software updates".
    click "installed software"
if it shows something about a recent update about "EFI UPDATE, FIRMWARE, THUNDERBOLT" or anything like that, exit out of it.
    go to mail.
    click "mail" at the top.
    click "preferences...".
find the account you are having trouble with, once you do, make sure its highlighted, then click the "-" at the bottom of the window (this will only effect that mail account, it will not effect your ical weather or not its synced thought that email account)
hit the "+" (right next to the "-") and add your accout back!
its something with that update that effected mail, i hope this works out for you, if not reply back

  • Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder, Pages App. Recently sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) after iOS5 installed.

Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Already have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder/Pages App./selected file. Prob not noted until recently after sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) when I installed iOS5. Anyone-- please?!

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

  • Deleted the app in the dock that compiles all your open files and fans them out as icons. What is it and how do I get it back?

When I bought my macbook pro, I deleted the app in the dock that complies all your open files together. When you click on the app it fans all the icons out. What is that app called and how do I find it again/get it back??
    Thanks!

okay... got that...but before I deleted it, it would "fan" all my open web pages, or open PDF files. So they were in a little folder as opposed to lined up beside my trash bin?
    make any sense?

  • Dock.app icon appears in dock!?

Well, I tried customizing my dock with a 3rd party app, but after applying the changes, I noticed that a new icon appeared in my dock - the icon for Dock.app. When I try quitting the app, it has a similar effect to the terminal command "killall Dock" - the dock quits, relaunches, and the icon is still there.
    http://i40.tinypic.com/mx20qw.png
    http://oi42.tinypic.com/v46mn4.jpg
Since then I've tried numerous things:
    1) Deleting the com.apple.dock.plist files.
    2) Uninstalling and restoring the settings in the third party app.
    3) "killall Dock" numerous times.
I've Googled this matter, but obviously, it has been to no avail.
So, my question, of course, is: HOW THE **** DO I GET THE ******* THING OUT OF THERE!
I have done a Time Machine backup, and am contemplating a reinstall, but does time machine keep system preferences as well?
Thank you for your help in advance!

Try this: defaults write /Path_To/Dock.app/Contents/Info LSUIElement 1

  • When force quitting Apps' Icon remains in Dock

I'm having a problem when I have to force quit applications. When I Force Quit an application the app quits but the apps' icon with the indicater still on remains in the dock. When this happens I'm unable to launch the same app again. This is really getting to be a pain so any help would be appreciated.

I would be more concerned with the fact that you are required to Force Quit applications, as that suggests something more serious than a stuck icon in the Dock which is but a symptom.
You could start up in safe mode,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US
which perform an fsck on the disk, which may rectify a problem with your disk, as well as excluding third party applications until the next normal restart. This could give you some indication of whether the problem is caused by some third party app or not.

  • Option-click icon in dock to hide app?

this has been a standard dock feature up until mavericks. i know that option clicking a *different* open app icon in the dock will hide the focused app and bring the target app to the foreground, but no longer can you just click the foreground app icon in the dock to hide it. has anyone else had a problem with this or know a workaround/substitute key command?
command+H is the closest i've come to a substitute, but that conflicts with my adobe key commands.
i know it wasn't a hugely popular feature but it's been a part of my workflow for years.

    Me too.
