Multiple Apple ID's needed to maintain privacy on home Mac?

At home I have a family Mac. I have just bought an iPhone. At home we are signed in to iTunes etc using my Apple ID. I was wondering if there is any way to control what is transferred to the Mac via iCloud - I don't necessarily want to share all my work files, docs, photos, email etc with the whole family!? Do we need separate ID's? Would this then work with syncing from my iPhone to the Mac if 'we were different people'?

You can all stiil use the same iTunes Store account and have different accounts for the iCloud syncing service to maintain privacy. Each person would then use their own ID with their iOS device and their particular user account on the mac.

  • HT1349 Multiple iPhones.  Multiple Apple ID's needed?

We have multiple iPhones in our home.  Do they each need a unique Apple ID for use of the 'find my friends' or other iCloud features?  I'm not having luck getting it to work using one ID.  Any recommendation appreciated.

Find My Friends is linked to the Apple ID used on the device.  If they are all using the same ID they will be seen as the same "person" in Find My Friends.  Also, if you use the same iCloud account with the same ID on multiple devices, when you sync any data with the iCloud account (such as contacts and calendars) the data from all devices is merged and the merged data will appear on all devices (i.e., you'll end up with each other's contacts on your devices).  To prevent this, it is normally recommended that each device have it's own iCloud account (unless they all belong to the same person).  Note: you can continue to share the same ID for purchasing from the iTunes and App stores; it doesn't have to be the same as the ID used for other services such as iMessage and FaceTime.  The only downside to this is that with separate iCloud accounts you cannot share the same photo stream.  With iOS 6, however, you can share all or part of your individual photo streams with each other using shared photo streams.  Finally, you should use separate IDs for FaceTime and iMessage.  If you don't, you will end up at some point getting each other's text messages on your devices.

    Hello javyocks,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Concerning the issue with multiple Apple ID's, please look at the following:

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.
If you are wondering how using multiple Apple IDs relate to iCloud, see Apple IDs and iCloud.

I have a iPad and three Apple TV in three different rooms, and I would like to play the same video or mirror simultaneously on all the Apple TV located in my three rooms. Is that possible?

doubt it most local area networks would die having to stream such amount of data

  • Multiple Apple ID's !?....yup...that REALLY makes sense !

    Hi guys !
      just a ''little'' rant/frustration venting here :
a few days ago i decided i'd finally give iCloud a go & check out how well it works...
launched the app, followed the instructions & thought i might as well edit my iTunes Store Apple ID to AVOID having to deal with multiple ID's within the ''Apple universe''. since iCloud demands an email format ID, i did just that & was a bit surprised to realize i also would have to change the password which, i was instructed MUST contain an uppercase whatnot as well...
ok no problem, i edited all that in my iTunes account thinking that now all i had to do is just sign in on anything Apple with that username/password, right ?
surprise, surprise - it doesn't quite work that way & now i'm left with what i was trying to avoid AT ALL COSTS : multiple Apple ID's !?
1 - in email format + 1 ''old'' one both sharing the same password, neat huh ?  well done.....
don't get me wrong, without being a blind fanatic fanboy type of user, i DO love MOST of the stuff Apple does ( both hardware as software.. ) & have great joy in using it in my daily routine BUT....i'm afraid Apple did a big boo-boo here :
why not allow to change the old ID to an email format ID & then implement it's use ''everywhere Apple'' even if for example in places such as these Apple Support Communities forum, the website would ''hide'' automagically the ''@whetever.com'' part of the ID to protect the user's privacy ?...
i was even less impressed by this implementation when i logged-in my iTunes Store account with the new ID, saw there were upgrades for 3 apps i had bought for my iPhone & when i clicked the button to get them, a msg came up stating :
Hum....interesting ! so, it states i HAVE upgrades ( why should it, if i DIDN'T buy those apps?... ) which to my poor old tired brain suggests iTunes Store DOES have an idea down there somewhere that i DID buy them - you know what i mean ? unless it's become common practice for iTunes to offer upgrades to people of things they didn't buy ?..
anyway, forgive my rant about this, it's just that in this day & age when even the simplest of forums have got this username/password nailed to perfection, IT IS beyond me that a company as obviously capable as Apple DOESN'T & if this is the best it can do well....let's say i'm less than impressed & i will definitely get rid of iCloud
to me iCloud was more of a curiosity than a need since i ''plug'' my iPhone 2 ir 3 times a day to my iMac & clicking a button to import photos/sync/whatever is WAY LESS TROUBLE than having to shuffle back & forth constantly between multiple ID's - specially since at current prices, my 2TB music library WON'T be going on the cloud anytime soon....
obviously i have sent Apple a feedback on this & would love them to sort this out - this strikes me as such a BASIC FAIL which CANNOT make for ''smooth sailling''
any ideas on the subject ?
    cheers
    Nuno

I have a similar problem with this as well.  For example, I like to keep the "contacts" of me and my spouse updated on both of our phones.  In order for this to happen, I have to sign in to "icloud" on both devices & mac with my apple ID.  It would be much better if this could be shared/combined with multiple devices as an option.  I don't think "icloud drive" solve's this problem.

  • Multiple apple dropboxes for one account

Can you have multiple apple dropbox accounts in the public folder for one user account? EX: instructor account and 3 different public dropboxes for 3 different users on the same instructor account? Using mountain lion and the users are not mac (computer) experts they are just "users"

You don't need to create two separate libraries.
If you want to sync different content onto each device, select the device in iTunes, select the tabs across the top and sync what you want.
To make it easier, create different playlists for each device and sync only those playlists.

  • Multiple Apple IDs on the same computer

We have three separate Apple IDs in our family and I need to store the iTunes media for each on the same desktop (under separate Windows user accounts).  When I start to download the media for a second account on the computer, I get a message that the computer is already associated with an Apple ID and if I continue the download, I won't be able to download content for the first account for 90 days.  How do I set up the respective Apple IDs and iTunes libraries so all three users can store and access their own content from their individual Windows accounts?

  • Can you access/use multiple apple ID's on one device?

    Hello,
In our family we have been registering everything (ipods, iphones and computers) all under one apple id. We have made purchases with the family apple id which we have been accessing on multiple devices. With everyones different needs I am wondering about setting up new apple id's for different family members. Can I use multiple apple id's on devices like my iPhone and still access apps/books/music purchased on the family apple id's and if so how do I do this.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Why do you have 3 Apple IDs?
Apple IDs cannot be merged and items bought with one Apple ID cannot be transfered to another. A computer can only be associated with one Apple ID every 90 days for automatic downloads, re-downloading of past purchases or iTunes Match. There is no getting around this restriction.
One computer can be autorized to play content purchased with multiple Apple IDs, though.
My suggestion is to pick on Apple ID and stick with it for the future. Once you have decided, log into one of the other Apple IDs and download every avialble item you bought with that ID to your computer. Wait 90 days. Log into the other ID and do the same thing. Wait 90 days. Finally log into the "main" Apple ID and stay logged in. Keep current backups of all your purchased items on a local, external HDD.

  • One PC, Multiple Apple ID's, how to integrate?

Im not sure if this problem of mine is as a result of the latest iTunes update, but suddenly Im getting told that I can't download my purchases as for some reason my son's apple id is now the only one that can be associated with the pc (for 90 days..).
    We have:
    3 Apple id's
    -Main/parent id
    -Child 1 id
    -Child 2 id.
The kids are each responsible for their own purchases.
Up until my last attempt to download my purchases I haven't noticed any problems sharing purchases on the single computer.
Today, I was warned that to download I would need to change authorisations or somesuch, which couldn't be changed again for 90 days.
Either I haven't noticed this restriction before, or the updated iTunes is imposing restrictions.
We all have our own playlists, and when syncing our devices (iphones/ipods) we simply choose our own playlist, but the playlists are made up from everyone's music, no restrictions.
Why is it now that I am finding restrictions on downloading music? How can I get around this in future?

    Thanks Limnos.
    Crisis averted.
Im not sure how/why I encountered the problem yesterday, but today I selected the 'transfer purchases from xxx' in the File menu, and it transferred my purchases to my music library without a problem.
I am signed in to itunes at the moment, but I haven't re-associated the computer with any particular ID (was previously mine, but showing its associated with my sons since last year, but I've not even noticed until yesterday).
For future questions on multiple ID's on a single computer, we run ours with multiple Apple IDs, all our contacts are shared (which I've discovered is useful when I get a message "Im at so and sos" and I look and 'so and so' is in  my contacts without me even knowing) on our Apple devices, and a purchase is downloaded from a device on first syncing.
We keep a playlist per child in itunes, which we can update anytime and select to sync. Any playlist they create is downloaded into itunes and saved, and kept by default on their device anyway.
Aside from the 'check for available downloads' yesterday I don't seem to have a problem. BUT I can't just borrow someone's ID and log in then download all their purchases. I have to plug in my device, then download purchases, and then I can manouevre them as i wish between playlists.
I hope this helps someone else, but feel free to answer my 'check for available downloads' doesn't work!

  • Multiple Apple ID's and BTMM

Struggling to get Back to My Mac working.  In the end, I want to be able to access my wife's iMac via BTMM when I am on the road.  It may very well be "user error", but I need some advice...
I have 3 Macs and 1 Time Capsule:
    1) My MacBook Pro
    2) Family iMac
    3) My wife's iMac
There is 1 user account on Mac #1 (me) and it is logged into my own Apple ID. I have also added my wife's Apple ID under System Preferences/Apple ID.
There are 2 user accounts on Mac #2 - I have one (logged into my Apple ID) and my son (logged into his Apple ID).
Mac #3 has only 1 user account.  I have added my wife's Apple ID as well as mine under System Preferences/Apple ID.
On my Time Capsule, I have added my Apple ID & my wife's into the Back to my Mac section.
For testing purposes, I have gone into Finder/Preferences/Sidebar and checked only Back to My Mac under Shared. However, I have also tested by using my iPhone as a Personal Hotspot (not connected to my LAN; using cellular data) and have the same results.
From Mac #1, I can see Mac #3 and the Time Capsule under Shared.
From Mac #3, I can only see the Time Capsule under Shared.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding what I should be able to do here, but I'm trying to get Mac #1 set up so that I can connect to Mac #3 via BTMM.  But even with Apple ID's set up on both Macs, I can not see either way via BTTM.  If I go back into Finder/Preferences/Sidebar and check Bonjour, as long as I am at home and on my LAN, then I can see everything.  But I need BTTM to work when I am away/not on the LAN.
What do I need to do on Mac #3 so that I can connect to it via BTTM from Mac #1?

  • HT5312 How Do I Stop email Harassment from same person creating multiple apple Ids?

    Hi,
I am being harassed by someone who is creating multiple apple ids and deleting them.  The person is constantly trying to get me to click on links.  When I tried to reply to one ID the person created, an error came up stating "this user does not exist" It then provided me with a code for that user.  I believe this person has hacked into my account on multiple occassion because a lot of time right after I change my password, it stopped working again a few days later.
I feel I have no privacy.  This person sends all kinds of emails using the names of major brands as the front.  All the emails look cheap and it seems as if it wants you to select the "unsubscribe" button which then phishes my info someone.  Can someone tell me who I can report these emails at apple to investigate?  The would have to know who created the email links, which are used once then deleted, but the person who is doing this is the same I'm certain.

    Hello ascending404,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with the emails you have been receiving.  I would be concerned about this too.  I found a resource that provides some good information about identifying and reporting emails like the ones you are recieving.
I recommend reviewing the full article, but this specific section provides steps for reporting these emails:
What to do with suspicious iCloud emails
If you receive a suspicious email, select the message text so that it is highlighted. Choose Forward as Attachment from the Message menu (OS X Mail) or the Actions menu (Outlook). Send the email to [email protected] This provides Apple's legal department and law enforcement with useful information to help prevent future phishing emails.
Note: For suspicious emails related to iTunes, see this article.

  • Multiple apple id's on iCloud?

Will iCloud support multiple Apple ID's? I have a dedicated work ID and a dedicated personal ID that need to be separated as well as my wife's and kids' ID's. I'm setting up a home network (Airport Extreme with external hard drives and printer) and want everyone connected to this network to have acces to purchases from iTunes as well as stored media (movies, music, photos, etc) from the "media drives". Sorry for the long-winded question... Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

  • One Computer - Two iPod Touches - Multiple Apple ID's possible?

Can you have multiple Apple ID's on one computer with one iTunes account so that more than one iPod Touch can activate Face Talk and email?

Each iPod needs a unique email address to used for calling the iPod via FaceTime. It does not have to be an Apple ID email address. I originally set up my iPod to use my Apple ID email address and a different GMail address. I set up my Mac to use FaceTime with the same GMail address. I could call my computer from the from my iPod but not the other way around. I deleted the GMail address from FaceTime on my iPod and am now able to call from either.

  • How to FaceTime and iMessage on multiple apple devices with one iTunes account

We recently received iPad 2's for Christmas and was looking for some advice on how to FaceTime and iMessage on multiple apple devices with One iTunes Account (Apple Id).  I have created or attached other e-mail addresses to our apple id but do not know how to use them on the new devices.  Our home MacBook Pro uses our main apple id for FaceTime.  The iPads have been setup with the main apple id w/o being able to use FaceTime and iMessage.
    Please Help...
I appreciate the help and support.

    P and V-
If you are trying to connect to someone with a different Apple ID, I think all the devices should work, but one at a time.
The problem is when you try to connect between two with the same Apple ID.  Once the calling device tries to make the connection, it finds the second device to be "busy".  That is where each needs to use a different E-Mail address when setting it up.
On iOS devices, when you press the Home button to exit an App, the App may still be active in the background, even when the device is sleeping.  If FaceTime or iMessage is merely being active that way, it may be enough to "tie up" the E-Mail address.
From the Home screen, double click your Home button.  You will see a list of recent Apps along the bottom of the screen.  Press and hold on one of them until they start to wiggle.  You will then see a red minus sign on each.  Pressing the minus sign will remove an App from the list, and stop it from working in the background.  (Click the Home button to stop the wiggling, and again to hide the recent Apps.)
