Multiple Apple TV's with Movie Rentals

I have searched everywhere for this online, and can not find a answer for this. I have two apple tv's throughout the house. If I rent a movie in the living room, can I continue watching in the bedroom, or is it only available on that one APTV? If someone know this please let me know!!!!!

you would need to sync the rental to your itunes library, and then sync it over to the other AppleTV. that aint gonna be an automatic process though.

how do you have multiple apple id's with one itunes

I have multiple IDs and use the single computer sharing itunes. By 'sharing' I mean we open the pc, open itunes and log in with our individual ID as required.
While Im logged in I plug in  my device. I transfer my purchases from my device as per the file menu (not the check for auto downloads). I move them as required to whichever playlist I like.
Then when my son wants to use itunes or update his device, he logs in, plugs in his device, transfers purchases from his device, puts whatever music he wants into his playlist and/or drags direct to the device regardless of who purchased it and then syncs.
Im not sure how it works associating the pc with only one ID or all that other business- I know I don't fiddle with any of that.

  • Apple TV (v2) and movie rentals - my experiences, for what it's worth...

I’ve been reading a lot of posts over the past couple of days about problems streaming rented movies, and thought i’d share my experiences as i’ve had a couple of days of head scratching and frustration trying to watch one of my own:
I unwrapped an Apple TV v2 at the weekend, which was a gift form a friend, and tried it out by renting a movie. This was yesterday:
Now I’m a Virgin media customer in the UK, with 10MB broadband (wired), which I figured would be fast enough to easily stream HD video - and sure enough my rental started up and played fine. For about 30 mins...
After this it froze, and gave me the dreaded ‘loading’ dialogue, which showed 7 hours as my wait, and it got longer as the day went on - not shorter.
I gave up, and decided to come back to it later, which of course was a foolish move, as everything that had been buffered was erased and i was back at square one.
I then tried again today and had the exact same problem. After turning on, and being pleasantly surprised to see that my HD rental began streaming perfectly with almost no delay, I was again kicked off after about half an hour.
So i decided to look at my ISP’s terms and conditions, and sure enough there are cap’s on my data traffic of 1.5gb during the day, and 750mb in the evening (until 9pm). Exceed either of these and your traffic speed is cut back by 75% for 5 hours.
So i did some digging, and found that the average HD movie file size is about 4gb. This means that it’s impossible for me to stream and watch a film in one sitting, as i’ll never have enough uncapped bandwidth to stream the whole movie in one hit.
Now some folks have talked about getting ahead of the game, and beginning a download ahead of time (like first thing in the morning) so that by the evening a film is waiting for you no matter how long the download time. But even if this works, you run the risk of losing the buffered file by hitting the wrong button on your apple remote. This to me is unacceptable.
So lets drill down to the details here:
Problem 1: the manner Apple TV v2 stores video. I’m no technical expert, but understand that the latest Apple TV has no hard drive - rather an 8GB flash drive. This would be enough to download and store an HD movie as a semi-permanent file, but Apple TV v2 doesn’t do this - it just uses it as a streaming buffer, which is cleared out periodically, and is easy to accidentally lose.
Problem 2: my ISP just won’t allow the amount of data transfer required to stream an HD movie without capping my download speed. Not between 9am and 9pm anyway (i’m going to see if i can stream the end of my film later without the beggars cutting me off).
Problem 2a (more of a gripe): Apple TV doesn’t warn you that the file you’re about to stream when you rent a movie will very likely trigger your ISP’s bandwidth throttling policy. It might be in their small print, but it should be there in big letters at the point of sale, just before you hit ‘buy’.
The Solution: There isn’t a satisfactory one for me really. I don’t imagine I’ll be renting any more movies directly from Apple TV. It’s too pricey to take the risk that I won’t be able to watch it, so back to DVD for me.
Now I could rent or buy through iTunes, and then stream to Apple TV, as at least I’d have a ‘hard copy’ of the movie on my MacBook and would be safe in the knowledge that once i had downloaded the file i could watch it from start to finish without interruption - but this is also less than ideal. I can’t get HD movies from iTunes, i’d have to go through the ‘planning ahead’ phase of starting downloading early in the day, and there’s still no guarantee it wouldn’t trigger the bandwidth throttling if it was a long movie.
The only other solution would be to max out my broadband package, although currently the most expensive package (which costs double what i pay now) still had a 3.5gb cap, so could kick me off just as i’m near the end of the film. Plus, i don’t watch that many films to make the expense worthwhile.
    To wrap up...
If you’re on a decent broadband connection that in theory should be able to handle HD streaming then check your ISP’s regs regarding throttling. Even with throttling on, YouTube, iPlayer and other similar sites still worked for me, as they’ll happily cope with reduced transfer speeds. Apple movie rentals won’t. This might explain why some can use these services perfectly at the same time as being unable to view their rental.
If you’re an occasional film watcher in a similar position to me, don’t bother with movie rentals. Unless you’re on an uncapped, unthrottled broadband package it’s unlikely you’ll be able to stream an HD movie in one hit due to the file size.
Back to Blockbuster Video for me i’m afraid. At least until we get NetFlix in the UK
Hope you have more luck than I did,
    McGinty

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

Multiple Apple IDs (2) with Purchases & iTunes Match. Apple TV Purchases. Not happy to have to log in/out to view and enjoy my Purchase Contest. What's the solution?

    Hi
i ran into the same problem. surprisingly though, i am not using multiple apple id and just one mac.
i did change both the account (apple id) and the computer (from pc to a mac server), but home sharing is on and the apple tv (1) is synced with the new computer.
i can connect to the itunes store and browse through it (signed in at all times). i cannot purchase any content and cannot play transferred rentals from the computer (apple tv is not authorised...)
somehow, it seems the apple tv was stuck with a previous id.
i have just now re-authorised my computer on the account and will give the apple tv another try. i did notice a message during the re-authorisation process. the apple tv is being authorised. this gives me hope.
in any case, your setup seems to be a dream come through. i decided to phase out my high end multiroom linn kivor system (over 20k back 6y ago) to an itunes based system. apparently you managed to build something.
i tried an itunes based nas but gave up due to complex operation (and overheating on top) and went for a mac server. i will be using windows clients though.
most of my content is cd based. can you sync purchased content between pc's? or with a server?

  • HT1911 Multiple Apple ID's with my one iPod

I accidentally have multiple apple ID's with my one iPod. Everytime i updated my email account, it created is an entirely new ID. Now, I want to transfer music between computers and songs purchased under old ID's can't be transferred because I don't recall old passwords. When I try the password reset process, it asks for my birthdate. I answer that correctly but it says that my answer is incorrect. now what?!?!?!?! HELP please!!!

You must use the same Apple ID on all devices for all of the downloads and content to sync across all devices. If you each have your own Apple ID - you cannot automatically download content from your phone to his or the other way around. If you share the same ID - you can.

  • Control multiple apple tv units with 1 remote app

Is it possible to control multiple apple TV units with 1 remote app on an iPhone/iPad? I have apple tv at home, set up under my own personal apple id. I have an apple tv unit at work which I want to use, but that uses our work apple id. can I control both units without having to log out of my personal id and then log into the work one?

On the ATV menu itself there is an option to name the ATV.
Does that not do it for you?

  • Apple TV and Itunes movie rental

So... When are apple going to brin movie purchase and rentals to the UK?

    Come on Apple, step up!
This should be the best all-round product you sell but out of the box it is rubbish.
I love my @TV but don't understand why to get the most out of it, I have to hack the bloody thing.
I want to download HD films through iTunes and watch them with my family, I want to watch my DVD backup (video_ts) files straight out of the @TV with 5.1 passthrough (or PCM if 'I' so choose!) from a network share or an external usb drive etc. etc.
At least HD films would go some way to provide justification to my wife that £270 was worth while as all the other functions I can get through my PS3 (and will probably get HD movie downloads before my @TV does).
I haven't given up on it yet as it is potentially the best of the bunch as a true multimedia hub but start providing proper functionality and not just to our US cousins!!!

  • Using Multiple Apple TV's with One Account

I am thinking of installing multiple Apple TV's in my home so we can rent/buy movies in different rooms. Is their any limitation of how many can be logged in at one time? Can I be downloading to multiple ATV's at the same time using the same account?

You can connect up to 5 tv's to your itunes library. Yes they can download content from the itunes store at the same time, playback the same or different content at the same time or a mixture of each. You may find though that this can put a strain on some networks and performance may vary.
I have 5, I can't say for sure I've ever had five playing movies together, certainly had 3 and probably 4 and for me they have worked well, albeit my network is a little more than what most people would want to set up.

  • Sync Multiple Apple TV's with one computer

I recently purchased 2 apple TVs and synched the first one with itunes running on my PC. I installed the 2nd unit, and it appears in iTunes as streaming only. What can i do? i want to load up the hard drive with content, i don't want to stream b/c it requires iTunes and the PC to be up and running.
Is there a way for multiple Apple TVs to sync with a single computer?

Today I was able to see both Apple TV's in itunes at the same time
From the second AppleTV, i made sure I selected Connect to iTunes from Settings->Computer. It presented me with an access code. From iTunes I entered the access code, and it came alive!! I was able to select which tv shows it would sync with, and then it started syncing. the entire time my primary AppleTV was being used in the other room. So iTunes was able to see both at the same time.

  • Can I use an iTunes Voucher on my Apple TV to purchase movie rentals?

I have an iTunes Voucher and an Apple TV and I would like to purchase some movie rentals on my Apple TV. Can I do this or can I only make purchases on Mac?

The easiest is to Redeem your gift cards into your iTunes Store account using your computer. These credits can be used by many of your devices such as iPod touch, iPhone and ATV as long as they are logged into your iTunes Store account. I don't remmember if activating Home Sharing automatically links your ATV to your account. However you can log into your iTunes account on the ATV through Settings/General/iTunes Store.
As a bonus on a Mac you can use the same iTunes Store account and it's credits for the Mac App Store to buy programs for your Mac.

  • HT1390 Report problem with movie rental

I rented the movie "Hunger Games". After the download had completely finished I wanted to watch the movie in iTunes and had trouble, the sound was on and off, the picture sometimes blurry and interrupted.
How can I report a problem in movie rentals?

Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.

  • HT1657 Apple TV stopped my movie rental of 2 Guns after 20 min...pooph! kicked out. No option to see my rentals like I can with my purchases, so re-selected movie and pressed "Rent" again. Message said for me to go to downloads in Settings menu.....so I G

Message told me to check for downloads in Settings....not very clear....I see others have had this issue since last update. I restarted from Settings and now I am Resetting and doing some sort of update...apparently this problem has been happening since Oct 2013, but I have not rented anything since then.....I am not likely to rent again from Itunes if this is not solved within minutes...wish me luck

I had this same problem today after renting last night.  I could not find the rented movie and it seemed like i needed to rent it again even though it had been less than 24 hours.  To fix the problem i check to see if the apple tv was up-to-date with the latest software version.  In my case it was not.  I updated the apple tv to the lastest version and now rented movies was displayed along with the time left until the rental expires.  Try updating your apple tv to the lastest version.  Hope this helps.

  • Apple TV is Downloading movie rentals very slowly

I rented Mission Impossible tonight, but Apple TV said it would be ready in 52 hours and 10 minutes.  I checked my connection, and it's all good, I did a speed test and got 22Mbps download speed, so I can't figure out what the problem is.
I have been having more and more issues with my Apple TV lately. Rentals are taking longer, or the movies play to a certain point and then we have to wait for the streaming to catch up to a point and then the movie will start again.
Has anyone else experienced any problems like this, and have you found a solution?  It makes for a very frustrating user experience, and everytime it happens I get a bit more turned off by the Apple TV product.

    This really doesn't sound right.
Might be worth mentioning your Country as sometimes problems can be country specific.
Always worth unpowering the unit and restarting if it's misbehaving.
Have you tried steraming content from iTunes locally recently - if that's ok then it's not LAN slowness, and given your 22 Mbps internet connection it's not likely to be that.
Could be Apple's servers in your region, your ISP throttling connections to Apple (unlikely) or a variety of nebulous networking factors.
Are you using your ISPs recommended DNS servers - some others apparently really slow access to Apple's media servers for some reason.
