Multiple ATA Drives Appear as One

I have two ATA drives and I would like to make them appear as one, to have more space for music. Can I do this and how do I?
Also, can I use an external Firewire drive as my booting drive and run all of my programs off of this drive?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have two ATA drives and I would like to make them
appear as one, to have more space for music. Can I
do this and how do I?
Yes. You can make a RAID set out of the disks with Disk Utility. Click on the "RAID" tab. Before doing this read all you can about the different kinds of RAID. There is some information in the RAID section of Disk Utility's Help, but you should read some more before deciding to do it.
ATA drives will not work with the built-in SATA controller in the G5. There are adapters to convert them to SATA
<http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_bridge.html>
or you can install a PCI ATA 133 card. There are also PCI cards that will do the RAID in hardware for better performance. There are mounting kits to fit extra drives in the G5 case, or you can screw them to the inside of the front cover. A good place for information is <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com>
Also, can I use an external Firewire drive as my
booting drive and run all of my programs off of this
drive?
Yes, but it will be slower than an internal drive.

  • Using multiple motion driver versions on one system...(with Labview 6.1 and Labview 8.0)

Using Labview 6.1 and Labview 8.0 on same PC computer (my development system).
Labview 8.0 applications, I would want to use the motion 7.x drivers
Labview 6.1 applications, I want to use motion 6.x drivers
(Of course, Labview 6.1 can not use motion 7.x drivers).
When I installed Labview 8.0 and motion 7.x drivers, it removed my motion 6.1
drivers (and all the vi's) and installed motion 7.x drivers (with vi's).
Of course, Labview 6.1 applications can not run with motion 7.x drivers.
How can I keep my Labview 6.1 applications running and building
with motion 6.x drivers while still having Labview 8.0 applications
with motion 7.x drivers (all on the same system).
And then, of course, the executables, on other systems with the 6.x and 7.x drivers.

Unfortunately there is no way to install multiple versions of a
hardware driver on a single operating system. This is not only true for
NI Motion but for any type of peripheral hardware. Windows can only
assign a single driver to a specific piece of hardware.
From my point of view the best solution would be to upgrade your
LabVIEW 6.1 application to LabVIEW 8.0. If this is not possible for
some reason you could install a second Windows on another harddrive or
partition and install LabVIEW 6.1 and NI-Motion 6.x on this system and
LabVIEW 8.0 and NI-Motion 7.x on the other one.

  • One IDE drive and one ATA drive in a single RAID enclosure?

I just got an OWC AL Elite dual-drive RAID enclosure, and was told, by OWC, that I could drop an IDE drive and an ATA drive into the enclosure and it would work fine.
It's not - If I unplug one of the drives, it works fine: the drive mounts and shows up in Disk Utility, but when both drives are plugged in, it doesn't mount, and Disk Utility sees the drive as a single 2TB drive (one drive is 300GB the other 160GB).
any thoughts? I have the jumpers on the drives set at Cable Select, I tried them both on Master and the drive wouldn't even show up in Disk Utility.
    thanks

Yes. I have it. They sell a model for ATA drives and SATA drives. Go into the "external enclosures" section and scroll down about halfway. It's in the multi-drive section.

  • Multiple Backups to more than one drive

I tried to find the answer to this here but hopefully someone can help me:
I have 4 external drives and i want TM to backup drive1 to drive2 and drive3 to drive4 - because the largest drive cant backup drive1+2 together.
What is the solution? Only a raid system for TM?
    Thanks

TM can only have one destination drive. you can RAID the backup drives but also keep in mind that TM drive should be at least twice as big as the total amount of data you are backing up. that's needed for overhead free space that TM requires and to accommodate incremental backups. if you don't have that don't use TM. use some other backup tool like CCCloner or superduper. they allow multiple destination drives. or you can use TM for one drive and something else for the other. also see this post for more backup options

When I enter an event in iCal, soon thereafter multiple other "New Event" notices (one to four) appear for the same day. If I delete these unwanted "New Event" notices, they later reappear -- sometimes multiplying like rabbits. Any suggestions?

Well, using iMovie to rearrange clips in a mini DV video edited by another program is extremely time consuming. I found a workaround. It still takes time, but it's much faster than rearranging the clips using iMovie.
The workaround is as follows. Bring up Finder and go to the directory where your event's clips are stored (typically ~/Movies/iMovie Events/<name of event>). It helps to setup Finder to be in Cover Flow mode, so you can see the beginning of each clip. Then, sort the files in ascending order by the 'Date Modified' field. This makes Finder sort the files in the same order that they were imported from the mini DV tape. Clips with timecodes have the naming convention "clip-<year>-<month>-<day> hour;minute;second.dv". Clips without timecodes use another naming convention. With the files sorted by "Date Modified" in Finder, rename clips as needed so that the date/time in their file names are in ascending order. Note: when you rename a file, you need to restart iMovie. I suggest not running iMovie while renaming files.
I believe the file date/timestamp is only accurate to the second. Occasionally, there may be a couple of clips that have the same date/timestamp. This may cause the ordering to not be correct. The best way to find these is through iMovie. To modify a file's date/time, right click on the clip in the event in iMovie, and then select "Adjust Clip Date and Time...".
So, this workaround is a lot easier and faster than trying to rearrange things from scratch in iMovie. But it's still time consuming. Creating a project out of an already edited video should take less than 5 minutes (not counting import time), but that's not the case.
I submitted an enhancement request to Apple asking if they can add an option to sort an event's clips in the order that they were imported by iMovie. Those who have the same issue as me, I suggest you submit an enhancement request as well.
    Anyone have any other suggestions?
    Thanks.

If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows.  That will get back your music.  I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.

  • Three ATA drives in a G4?

    Hi
I have a G4 (AGP Graphics) with 2 ATA HD's installed. I want to upgrade to Tiger but on a new drive as I have very little space left on my Macintosh HD.
Can I fit another ATA drive? The manual is slightly vague as to the exact number of ATA/SCSI drives that can be installed so I wanted to make sure before I took the plunge. The teason for using ATA is that I have no free PCI slots to run a SCSI card.
Supposing I can do it what would be the procedure/connections? Would the new Tiger drive be the Master and the other 2 slaves? If so would I need to change ant jumper settings and once installed how would I boot up in order to format the new drive (from the Panther CD?)
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

    Hi, Chris!
Actually, you can add a drive the the optical drive's EIDE bus (jumpered for slave) and it will run there. However, it is far from an optimal solution. That EIDE bus is only ATA-3, which has a max transfer rate of 16.6 MB/sec, versus your current ATA 5 drive bus, which runs at "ATA-66" speeds (max rate of 66.7 MB/sec). If you use the drive on the optical bus for disk intensive operations, it will be painfully slow. Moreover, if you use it to feed the optical drive for concurrent burning to CD/DVD (especially with video), you're likely to encounter some burn problems/failures. If you're just going to use it for storage/archiving files, it will likely be just fine there.
IMO, Jeff's solution is the way to go. With an ATA-133 PCI card, you'll be enhancing your Mac with a fast ATA 7 drive bus, enabling the addition of two more hard drives without regard to any size recognition limit, and will have a second, independent bus availlable for regular use should the native one fail somewhere down the line. Theoretically, based on today's commonly available drives, you'll increase the internal storage capacity by 1TB (based on 2-500GB drive additions)... If you go with a SATA card and one or two new SATA drives, the same applies, but with even better throughput than with an ATA-133 PCI card.
Regarding drive jumper settings, there are none to be concerned with on a SATA drive setup. For ATA, remember that you will have two independent busses/controllers, so you'd set up two Master/Slave configurations, one for the native bus and the other for the PCI card. For example, you now have a master and a slave on the native bus. If you add an ATA-133 PCI card that has a single controller on it (some have two) and add one ATA drive to it, you would set that drive to Master (or "Single, if it's a Western Digital). If you later add a second drive to the card, then you would set one as Master and the other as Slave.
The only other things I would note regarding installation are first, there should always be a drive attached to the end connector of any ATA ribbon cable, which eliminates the possibility of fringe signal interference on the cable (which can corrupt drive data), and second, the Master/Slave relationship applies to enabling the drive bus controller to properly recognize and communicate with the drives and has no bearing on which drive is the boot drive and which isn't - you can boot and run from a Slave drive just as efficiently as you can from a Master. Lastly, whenever adding a new piece of internal hardware (PCI card, drive, video card, etc), it's perhaps a good general practice to do a PRAM reset before booting the first time after the physical install.
Regarding initializing a new drive (fancy term for formatting it for the first time), you'd physically install the drive, boot normally to your startup drive, launch Disk Utility right from there, and initialize/format the new one using DU's Erase option (or the Partition option, if you desire to partition the drive into multiple volumes).

  • How to deal with multiple hard drives?

I am using Aperture 1.5 but am having trouble
dealing with the Library structure. I want to be able to have Aperture recognize and work with Projects located on several different external hard drives. Where should the main library be located? In 1.5 is there such a thing anymore as a Branch library? I had a branch library on an external drive. I may have messed things up so that Aperture doesn't quite know where things are. Is there a way to re-organize things so that when I open Aperture ALL the projects I've worked with do appear? Thanks.

To have Aperture work with projects on different hard drives, just import the project files but tell Aperture to copy the files from their current location (say a media card or CD) to a directory of your choice on any drive of your choice. You can store projects on multiple drives. I don't think it matters where the main library is located, it could be on your primary drive, or on one of your external hard drives. I'm not sure how to consolidate projects that were enclosed in different libraries other than to export the projects individually, and then reimport them into the new centralized library. I do wish Aperture would allow one multiple select projects (it only allows you to select one at a time) for exporting. I also wish that Aperture had a 'Consolidate Libraries' command which would allow one to just pull all 'found' projects into one library.

  • Time Machine Backup across multiple external drives

    Hello all-
I have about 1.5 TB of data in my computer (video editing- fills things up fast)... I was wondering if it were possible to tell Time Machine to recognize multiple external drives as the backup volume? I'm not talking about creating cloned backups of my data on different drives, I'm talking about plugging in three 1TB external drives and having Time Machine use them as targets for the backup image.
    Thanks

Yes, you can use Disk Utility to create a +Concatenated Raid Set,+ also known as a JBOD (Just a bunch of disks). See the Help for Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
This is kind of the opposite of partitioning: it combines 2 or more disks into a single volume. The three disks won't appear on your desktop or Finder sidebar individually, just the one volume.
I'm not sure that's necessarily the best solution, though. Is all that data on a single internal HD, or do you have, say, OSX, applications, and most of your data on one drive, and media on a second? If so, it might be better to use TM on your main OSX drive, and something else, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! on the media.
That would greatly reduce the time needed for a restore, as you'd only have to restore the drive that failed.
It could also reduce the amount of storage needed, as you might not need (or want) TM's hourly backups of the media files, and keeping all the previous versions. Using another app would allow you to back that data up somewhat less frequently, such as once or twice a day.
But, of course, it all depends on your situation and preferences. As usual, there are many options.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR and Serial ATA Drive

I've got a very strange problem....
Yesterday i have installed my new motherboard (MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR) but i have a problem with the SATA feature.
I've got two drives : one 40GB ATA (Western Digital) and one 160GB SATA also from Western Digital.
My SATA drive is recognized by the FastTrak BIOS (v2) but i'm unable to reinstall Windows XP Professional (with SP2 Slipstreamed) because Windows Setup didn't recognize the SATA disk. I have loaded the Promise Serial ATA Drivers at the begin of the installation (F6)...
I have also tried 2 different versions of the Promise SATA Drivers; the one that cames with my motherboard CD, and the most recent from the MSI website. But with both drivers the same result. How can i get my Serial ATA Harddisk get work with this motherboard?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Computerfreakje.
PS : My specifications are the following:
MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR (Rev. 7.4)
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
    2x 256MB Kingston PC3200 Dual Channel
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb (R360)
    Western Digital 40GB ATA
    Western Digital 160GB SATA

    Thanks for your reply Richard,
My motherboard didn't came with a floppy (I have bought an bulk version..) I have created a SATA floppy by myself. (I have got the drivers from the motherboard cd..) These drivers are also good, right?
Which type of RAID Array should i create? Because i have only one SATA drive.....
I think the "auto" feature is the easiest way?
    Thanks.

  • Creating multiple  Spry menu bars in one site

I've been creating a website and I am required to use multiple templates to manage all the different sections of the site.  To make it much less of a hassle, once I created one template, I simply saved that template as another template so I would not have to start all over again.  On the first template I created a spry menu bar with a certain amount of buttons.  And because I created the other templates with that template, those templates had the same menu bar containing the same settings.  The problem is, because of the specified settings of the spry menu bar, if I change the amount of buttons from the original to one less, the whole bar on that template will get off center and messed up because the settings for the menu bar are not set to that certain amount of buttons, but if I change the settings to suite that amount of buttons, then the settings for all the templates change and that messes up the other menu bars on those templates because they have a different amount of buttons.  Currently my templates all contain 10 buttons and I am wanting to create a new menu bar with only about 4 - 6 buttons.  I thought going up to insert and inserting a brand new menu bar would do the trick but when I did that it inserted a menu bar that had all the settings of the already-created menu bar, (ie same background images, and hovers, etc.) as well as the width which, because the width is suited for 10 buttons, it does not properly make the default 4 button menu bar center correctly.  And if I try to change the settings on this menu bar then the same thing happens with everything changing and getting messed up.
So after this long explanation, my question is, how can I insert multiple spry menu bars into one site that are not correlated with each other in terms of all the settings so that when changed, will not affect each other?  I am guessing I am having this problem because I created all the templates from one template so they are all interlocked, but the page that I tried to insert the brand new menu bar on was not created from any of the templates and was the first page I made at the very start.
http://phonytrojanmusic.zxq.net/ Here is the link to the site. The first page that opens up is the page that I tried to insert the brand new menu bar on.  If you click on band choir or elementary you will see the menu bars with 10 buttons that are all interlocked in terms of settings.  Also, I'd like to note that if I delete a button in one template, it does not delete that same button in the other templates, nor does it add a button to the other templates if I add one.  Only the physical appearance changes because the settings are meant for only one amount of buttons.  Sorry for the novel!

Alright well I just tried to use 2 complete different templates.  I created one brand new template from scratch, added the menu bar, gave it an ID of "band", and configured it to suite 10 buttons accordingly.  Then I started off from scratch again with a starting html page with a different css style sheet and added the menu bar and gave it a different ID of "choir" but the settings of the two different bars still act as one set of settings!  I dont know how to fix this problem.  Please tell me what to post if anything will help you. Im guessing the solution is very simple but I have tried everything.
here is the code for the two different menu bars (one in each template)

  • Any way to span a single iTunes Library over multiple hard drives?

I have a hard drive that is almost full and the only thing on it is my iTunes library. It is not feasible for me to get a larger hard drive as this one is already a 1TB hard drive. Now, I have seen I can create multiple libraries, with each library on a different hard drive if I wish. However, not only is most of the media in the library podcasts, using multiple libraries for a single iPod Touch would be a pain.
So, is there a way for the iTunes Library to span over more than one hard drive, but yet be a single library? It would make it easier to sync my iPod Touch.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming that I would have to "import" my old drive into the library
You don't import anything since your library is the same as it was. All those items are still in iTunes in the same location. The ONLY thing different is iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Or am I wrong and it will have my previous media folder still in the library, and anything new would be put in the new media folder?
Yes & yes. Everything in iTunes will still be in iTunes, stay in the same location it is now and iTunes will use it from there.
Anything new added to iTunes will go to the location you set in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.

Does anyone know if I try to load Photoshop CS5 on another hard drive on my Mac Pro swith Lion as the operating system, will that be considered like another "computer" and go beyond the two computers normally allowed?
To my knowledge the restriction for PS activation is per computer and not per drive or operating system. At least I was able to have an old and a new system on separate HD in my MacPro  with both CS5 able to run while also installed a version on my MacBook. All using Snow Leopard but I have no reason to believe this has changed for Lion.
But you are always able to install PS on more then two computers, the only downside is that you first have to deactivate one of them and activate the version on another computer. And activating and deactivating is not much work, just select it in the  Help menu

  • How many ATA drives can I install in an MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 motherboard?

I have a MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 motherboard ordered with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor to upgrade my current machine.
In my current machine I have two ATA drives.  Will I be able to install both of those ATA drives on that MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 motherboard or will it accept only one?
I plan on replacing one of the ATA drives with a SATA drive later, but I'd like to hold off until after Christmas.  If not, I'll just have to get by with one drive for a while.

You can always add a ATA controller card to extend it.
    How much do you need?
    BTW, ATA = Serial-ATA or Parallel-ATA = ATA
There is no such thing as an ATA but or and (E)IDE bus.
Many use the wrong naming including MSI.
OK.  Now if I understood Hans correctly, the board has one PATA-connector. To that, I can connect 2 PATA-devices.
Now here is a picture of my device manager:
Can I connect those two Western Digital drives to the PATA connector?
