Multiple audio outputs - HDMI & Audio out

Hi all,
This is driving me a little nuts, so any help greatly appreciated! With the new Mac Mini models, you can have audio out via HDMI or the line out. I am thinking to hook the mini up to an LCD TV/monitor via HDMI (sound on the monitor) and also to my other TV/sound system via the mini DP and audio out.
I assume when the mini turns on it'll activate both displays (if they are turned on), and from what I understand you can have two displays running. I'd only want one at a time so I'd have the other display switched off. But can the mini output audio to either both, or whichever system I am using? I've read a lot of posts but can't find a definite answer. I only want audio (and video for that matter, but can turn off other screen) to one TV at a time, but do I have to go into the OS audio settings each time I want to swap between the two?
I'm also thinking of using Plex and keeping it open at all times, just sleeping the mini when not in use. Can the mini only output to one source, requiring manual switching to the other (i.e. going from HDMI to audio out)?
Thanks for your help!!

I would consider using a switcher for the video. And use the osx sound output selection to change the audio.

  • Combined optical digital audio output/analog line out

Combined optical digital audio output/analog line out minijack on the new Mac Pro support 5.1?

Are you asking if it has that?
    http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/
    says:
Combined optical digital audio output/analog line out minijack
    Which means it does.
On all but the earlier Mac Pro models, this has been standard since the iMac G5.
    Mac Pros earlier used SPDIF.
    These are now mini-Toslink.

  • 2 different "switchable" audio output (HDMI and analog) with Mac mini

    Hello,
I have a 2010 Mac mini that I use as a media center.  Its hooked up to my HDTV in the living room via HDMI.  I also want to hook up external speakers via the 3.5mm analog jack.  These speakers are in the kitchen.
I would like to get my audio through HDMI when I watch TV and be able to get audio output via 3.5mm jack when I just want to listen to music in my iTunes library.  I like to control my iTunes library with the Remote app on multiple devices.
Is it possible to switch automaticaly the audio output?
Right now I use my Airport Express to stream music from my Mac mini to the speakers but I think that the Airport isn't really needed since it lies just by my Mac mini.  I'm pretty sure the mini can do both.
I've tried to hook the speakers to my Mac mini but first: I hear a "hum" in the speakers (wich I don't hear with the Airport) and second: I can't seem to get the audio out in the speakers.
I've read many posts about the audio midi settings but I can't figure it out...
    Any help?
    Thanks a lot.

I hit post too early... here's the rest of it.
    See the Linein app- https://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/
    See the SoundFlower app- http://cycling74.com/soundflower-landing-page/
    See AU Lab- http://www.apple.com/itunes/mastered-for-itunes/
With those apps (or combination thereof)
You can copy an  audio stream from one output to another.

    Hi people,

  • Only audio output is Digital Out

My MBP has been connected to an external monitor and speakers for about a week (not unusual) and I just disconnected it and am using once again as a laptop. I noticed however, I can't adjust the volume, nothing comes out of the speakers and the only audio output device is Digital Out, no speakers.
    How can I fix this?

Thanks for this. I had this issue with my MBP for the first time today and that forum thread helped out.

  • Dual use audio output HDMI and Headphone Jack on MacMini 2010

I am trying to use both the digital HDMI and analog headphone jack at the same time. My indoor home theater system use the HDMI and my outdoor amp and speakers are linked to the analog headphone jack.
Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get both to work simultaneously like I had on my AppleTV. I was actually using the toslink and the HDMI on the ATV.
Anyone have any luck getting both outputs to feed at the same time, maybe by 3rd party software, on the Mac Mini 2010

  • 5.1 audio over HDMI - audio sent to wrong channels.

I was watching a movie on MythTV and noticed my Rear Left Channel was being sent the audio that should have been sent to my Center channel and vise-a-versa, and that my Right Rear Channel was being sent to my Sub (LFE) and vice-a-versa.
I played the same movie in VLC to the same results so I know it isn't a MythTV setup issue.
I also looked at how to remap channels and while confusing I could do it, but I also found something saying the issue was due to a issue in the Linux Kernel, so a potential update is going to annoy me again.
I need a fix. What do I do. Explain it to me like I'm five if you can.
    Thanks.

Great support in this forum.... NOT
Guess I won't be buying Lenovo products in the future..

  • Asrock ION330/Nvidia HDMI - No audio output

Machine was running archlinux and not been upgraded in over 6mths but HDMI audio worked fine. Decided to do a scratch build since all the changes in that time and have a nice clean system.
If it helps, this is what I install. Ssed this exact same install process for another Asrock ION330 and Acer Revo3610 (both same hardware) but neither use HDMI at all. Both VGA with either optical or analog audio. Both work with no additional config.
pacman -Sy nfs-utils screen ntp alsa-utils mlocate xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils mesa nvidia ttf-dejavu xfce4 gamin slim mythtv unrar lirc xbmc wget
Get no sound output but also zero errors on any of the following commands. I should add that the receiver does not detect any audio coming in, ie it usually identifies how many channels of audio and type it is receiving.

Default install, clean boot and I get this error but the info above indicates there is a sound device. Confused!

  • [SOLVED] HDMI audio not working (worked in Ubuntu)

    hi there,
I have very new hardware (Intel Core i5 2500, using the internal GPU) and already knew that it would probably take me a while to get everything working (especially the GPU). I first tried Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha with the xorg-edgers ppa, which already supported the new GPU, including 3D acceleration... unfortunately, it made my X server crash about every 15 minutes. Having heard about ArchLinux before I thought I should give it a try. Turned out the packages that I need for my GPU are only available in testing (xf86-video-intel 2.14, Mesa 7.10, Kernel 2.6.37), so I'm running on the testing repository right now. But I gotta say that I'm pretty impressed by ArchLinux, Compiz is working perfectly smooth and the whole system feels way faster than Ubuntu.
Now regarding my problem, I can't get my HDMI audio to work. Usually I would have said to myself "well, ALSA doesn't support it yet, I guess I'm gonna have to wait" . But the reason I'm writing this thread anyway is that it was working fine in Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha. In Ubuntu, I could use the alsa device hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=2 for HDMI audio. The strange thing is, this device doesn't exist on my ArchLinux system. Here is my "aplay -L" output.

I also already downloaded a Daily Snapshot of ALSA and did a ./configure, make, sudo make install - still no luck. And btw, DEV=0 outputs sound through my default speakers...

  • HDMI Audio Issue/Radeon Grapics Card [Solved]

    Hello All,
New user to Arch, been using linux for a little while longer. I'm trying to set my HDMI out as default output, but cannot seem to make it work. I've tried the wiki, forums, and websearches, but none of the methods (and variations thereof) seem to work for me. The hw must work, for I am listening to music as I type via HDMI, but I must go into VLC>Audio Output>HDMI. So if someone could help me out, walk me through it, I would appreciate it very much. I'll post some info below, sorry in advance if it's not everything needed. If you want to assume I am a complete n00b/idiot, I will not be offended. Thanks in advance!

OK, I think I've got a resolution. I used a combination of several wikis to get it right, mainly:
    ALSA-Gentoo Wiki
    ALSA-Arch Wiki
    ATI#HDMI Audio-Arch Wiki
    Kernel Parameters-Arch Wiki
I searched a number of other pages I don't remember right now, but these were the most helpful as I recall. I again added "radeon.audio=1" to /etc/default/grub per the "Kernel Parameters" and "ATI#HDMI Audio" Arch Wikis. I then modeled  my ~/.asoundrc to match the Gentoo Wiki example, with a slight tweak to fit my hardware. That file now looks like this:
    GNU nano 2.2.6 File: ~/.asoundrc
    pcm.!hdmi {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 3
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave {
    pcm "hdmi"
It's been a few days, with rebooting everyday, and so far so good. Audio programs (eg. VLC) and flash content are working just fine. However, speaker-test & aplay -D give no errors and the scripts run, but no audio is actuallly produced. ??? Is this a problem, or can I continue to ignore it?
Anyways I consider this pretty much resolved, and hope this helps anyone else with this issue. Cheers!!!

  • Digital audio output problem

    Hi All
I have just bought a Mac Mini intel duo 1.83hz and a Hitachi plasma TV 42inch model 42PD9700.
I have tried to link a toslink cable from the audio port on the mac mini to the TV . The TV has an 2 inputs for audio, a HDMI Audio jack and a RGB audio input.
I have tried both ports but get no sound from the speakers in the TV
The message in the system setting under the sound output tab shows
1 Digital output : Port - Built in Output
and settings for the selected device: The selected device has no putput controls
I have used the following adaptors with each side of the toshlink cable
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=29296&TabID=1&C=KRS&U=MapAuto&doy=s earch&MenuName=Optical+Cable
What am I doing wrong guys?
    thanks

HDMI can carry audio, but a DVI (from the Mac mini) to HDMI cable will not carry audio, just video. So, you'll have to select a different connection. I'm a little confused by your description of the other audio-in option on the TV as "RGB" since that means Red-Green-Blue which could be an SCART video port. This review says the TV has "stereo audio inputs" which, I would guess, are a pair of red & white RCA connectors (an analog connection). You might need a mini-jack to RCA type "Y" cable to go from the Mac mini's headphone port and into the two RCA jacks. Something similar to this:
    http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/187082/art/belkin/y-audio-cable-mini-jack.html
The Mac will switch to "digital out" if you plug in a digital optical audio cable with one of those adapters but that doesn't mean the TV is receiving that signal. A digital optical audio cable will not carry analog audio to an RCA jack.

I fixed the audio using pavucontrol. My HDMI card seemed to have 2 channels with same same name:

Cape Verde/Pitcairn HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 7700/7800 Series]
I wasn't able to select the second one without pavu, which somehow was the good one.

WIth the above configuration, VLC outputs to PC speakers fine using the "Analog Default Audio Device" (However, if it matters, switching to "Analog Front Speakers" is a garbled mess).  Selecting HDMI0 and HDMI2 in VLC produces no output.  Selecting HDMI1 in VLC is the same garbled mess.  However, running this command from Archwiki HDMI Output produces totally clear audio via HDMI:
    aplay -D plughw:1,7 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
The list of audio devices that VLC "sees" as selectable for audio output mirrors the PCM devices I see with aplay -L.  The three HDMI audio devices in aplay -L each list as their devices 0, 1, and 2 for HDMI0, HDMI1, and HDMI2 respectively.  Conceptually, it seems to me like my HDMI PCM devices are messed up.  Shouldn't HDMI1, at least, be paired with Device 7, since the command directly above works with device 7?  If I understand things correctly, my asoundrc currently overrides cards , however, when I try to get it to override pcm devices, with the following, no hdmi devices are visible in VLC:
    pcm.!hdmi {
    type plughw
    card HDMI
    device 7
There must be something I am not understanding - would appreciate any help or insights.

Okay nevermind...sort of.  It occurred to me to try the same alsa wav test file in VLC through HDMI.  It plays clearly with HDMI1 device.  So, my understanding of ALSA PCM devices is still totally messed up, but I have discovered my problem is a different one:
VLC plays mp3/mp4/mkv files garbled through HDMI, but clearly through PC Speakers.
Now I will try and solve this new problem myself.  Marking SOLVED since original issue was non-issue...can I delete thread so as not to waste everyone's time?

  • My audio output is acting up

Lately the audio output is cutting out on the right speaker both in the built in speakers and the headphones. I have been unable to find any way to fix this problem. I can reboot and sometimes that cures the problem for a while.

go into system preferences and click the sound tab (under hardware). Then select the output device ie internal speakers etc, then slide the balance marker to the centre. This might fix it, if not you've probably got something wrong with the actual speakers.

  • Final Cut 7.0.2/Tascam USB-2, US-144MKII audio output intermittent

    Dear folks,
    Hello.
I am continuing to have problems with getting sound out of my Tascam USB 2.0 inteface box using Final Cut v 7.0.2, on a Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon, OS10.6.4 .
The interface unit is a Tascam US-144MKII, USB 2.0 Audio/Midi Interface.
I have down loaded its driver. It works fine as the system output and playing back from Quicktime player.
In Final Cut it is fine one moment, sometimes pops and clicks then it goes silent. It is unpredictable and unstable. It is intermittent, not working most of the time. I have refreshed the AV Devices, set audio output in Audio/Video Preferences and tried Sequence settings, as well as restarting the computer.
I am having to go Firewire out to an external deck to get sound out of Final Cut onto my sound system.
Final Cut seems to be the problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your time.
    Bests,
    Peer

I've had limited success across five suites. Running FCP 7.0.3 across all rooms, however I've only been able to get one room functioning in a limited way. It sees MIDI info in the Control Panel indicator and replays some fader level info, however only when stopping and starting FCP. Have been troubleshooting the issue and have downloaded the newest Tascam driver for the FW-1884 (from May 2010). Can get FCP audio output through the monitor bussing on the Tascam, however actual moving-fader still not achieved.
Called Tascam's (LA) help line and they couldn't give me any advice at all (as they would only comment on Logic issues and were unfamiliar with using FCP!)
    Any suggestions from anyone?
    Thanks.
