Multiple authors in ibooks author

The book I am writing has one primary author and three other major contributors.  The book is at the stage where a good draft has been written by the primary author.  I want to make this draft available to the other major contributors for them to read and provide their edits.  Since the book is highly interactive and the interactivity is what is the books appeal, what is the best way to get the contributors involved.  I could send them a .iba file through dropbox.  Or I could send a .pdf which loses all the interactivity.
Does anyone have advice on how to get edits from multiple contributors?

You can send them the.iba file, or export as .ibooks and send that for them to use on iPad.
But if the idea is edtis on the live (.iba) document, be aware it can be tough to do merged edits at times, so plan ahead.

  • I know it is possible as E O Wilson's - Life  On Earth displays it, but how do you place images across multiple pages in iBook Author?

    I have a large image that I would like to span across 2 or possibly more pages in iBook Author. I know that it is possible as you can see it in the above mentioned E O Wilson's Life On Earth. However at the moment when I place an image in the position required it simply displays it on one of the pages. Any help with this issue would be greatfully recieved.

    You'd need to split the image into two, then place the left 1/2 on one page and the right 1/2 on the next, side-by-side.
    Disable Portrait orientation for the book via the Inspector.

  • Can I author an iBook for my own family use?

    Hi -
    I'm dabbling with iBooks Author.  I'm not intending to submit the book to the iBook Store.  I just want to share it with family members for their iPads.
    I created a short tale with some text and images - 15 pages, 3 chapters long - and Published it as ".iba" right out of the app.  When I sent it to my wife's iPad (I used email and DropBox), the TOC was there, chapters were listed, and clicking moved you through the book,  but all the pages were blank. No text or images.
    Have I misunderstood how this app can be used?  Is this ONLY for producing books for sale?
    TIA some experienced explanation.

    The file used when authoring via iBooks Author is .iba. The distributed file is .ibooks. You should first Preview to your own iPad to test, so that any issues such as missing content can be dealt with.
    You can distribute to family etc without goint thru the Store, using iBooks Author's 'Share/Send via email' menu or 'Share/Export', saving off an ibook, then uploading that to your own server or DropBox, as an example.

  • HT4059 PDFs from ibooks Author limitations?

    Are there limitations to the PDFs that one can create from a book authored with ibooks author (for people who don't have apple devices to be able to read)?

    Yes, there are many limitations -  an iBA PDF lacks the interactivity that an .ibooks file would have, including links, TOC, etc.
    Consider it a preview that allows for basic review.
    What other devices are you attempting to target?
    Keep in mind that iBA outputs a hybrid epub, which is why iBooks on iOS is required (coming to the next OS X), while Pages outputs an industry standard epub, which is cross-platform.

  • Samples of iBooks Author texts

    Is there anyway to preview some samples of books authored in iBooks Author without an iPad? I have an iPhone and MacBook Pro.
    Thanks!

    Not unless you share/export as PDF, sorry.

  • Is there a way to import multiple questions at once into iBooks Author?

    I have a list of 200 questions that I do not want to have to manually enter into iBooks Author review sections. Is there a way to batch upload them into a quiz?

    Not yet, but that would help with the 217 I've been putting off
    Perhaps a word to Apple via the Feedback menu would help...

  • IBooks Author, one book multiple languages!

    Hey,
    I am writing a book in iBooks author that will eventually be published in the US, Europe and Canada. It is a technical publication and while the content is identical regardless of where you are reading the book I want to be able to publish different versions to take account of regional spelling differences (Tire/Tyre, airplane/aeroplane, harbor/harbour, etc).
    What I want to do is to write the book in US English, make a copy and then be able to change the books entire language to Candadian or British English in such a way that a spellcheck will correct the words that are spelt differently in the different countries.
    The problem I see is that in the main document settings the language list only contains English and not the specific types of English I am looking for and changing the language text in every box doesnt seem to make the spellchecker work.
    Any ideas??

    What settings are those?  The Inspector has them all
    In any case, I don't think you do what you want without human editing.  The OS X spellcheckers are not good enough.

  • Multiple audio tracks on iBooks Author?

    Can I add 3 audio tracks to my book in iBooks Author and have them all play automatically upon page load? (Without shift, click on each widget?)

    TS files are from broadcast.  You're really not allowed to edit those.
    Stick with original media you shot yourself using a supported camera format, and things should work fine.

  • HT5116 iBooks Author: Can You Co-Author on Multiple Machines?

    I am trying to have 20 students contribute chapters to an anthology of folk tales...not finding a way to export/import iBookAuthor chapters or pages from one machine to another. Is this possible? I appreciate any info. Thanks.

    I am trying to have 20 students contribute chapters to an anthology of folk tales
    Very simple,  discuss the needs of teh book and ask each to create a chapter and allocate  who does Chapter 1...and repeat for each chapter.
    .not finding a way to export/import iBookAuthor chapters or pages from one machine to another
    Very easy - each  student and yourself needs  to download and install teh free app "Dropbox"  there are others - this is the best IMHO - each  student  then uploads their chapter to Dropbox.  The  other and maybe easier way if  everytbody is meeting in  a "classroom" is the inevitable USB!
    One ( or more ) person is designated as editor and  pulls down the  chapters from  drop box using the links or public folder access.  Once gathered on  one machine, thay are assembled in iBooks Author.
    How  to create the book?
    The  first essential is  to decide which template to use.  Will  it be a standard freebie or will it be  editted and customised to your own design.
    Once the template is completed - it is  saved as a template and  save again as template  "yourname1"
    Now you have  two  copies on standby.  open as an iBooks Author from the template and save as ( whatever your books is to be named). Each student then gets a copy of that file... by same process of using Dropbox or USB
    The editor ends up with 20  files and  if each  uses  its designated chapter number....
    Have all your  20 chapters available  and simply copy and paste into the  book  tree on the left.
    After the first  past- delete the  original  chapter 1 - you paste becomes Chapter one  - now repeat the process.
    Its  quite easy  really. I suggest you create a few chapters in  a Test book and then open another different template as test 2 and start copying and pasting  chapters to get the  hang of it.
    The book as a whole now needs editting   if you intend to  have a glossary and maybe  tweek or correct  anything in the other  chapters.

  • I am a teacher and want to distribute a textbook I created using iBooks Author through Ibooks. We are not 1 to 1 and students share devices on a cart. Can I publish and distribute the book if it is used by multiple students?

    Title says it. I created a textbook using Ibooks Author and want to load it on my class set of 30 iPads that are used by 5 different groups of students throughout the day. It is not a 1 to 1 device. Is there a problem with doing this as the Apple ID would be a generic that downloads the content many times on each iPad for my students?

    The two processes are so unalike that you need to bone up on what they involve before answering, I think...you can't just shrug and expect specific help, sorry.
    See iBooks Author: Publishing and distribution FAQ - Support
    Distribution isn't automatically like iOS apps, where the store is involved by default.
    You are free to put your .ibook file on a school server/your own server, and anyone can download for free and use it, independent of any Apple ID and the app store. If you want to restrict to your school/students, put it behind a login.
    You can put it in the store as a free download and any Apple ID can download and use via any iTunes Account. If you sell via the store, each download/purchase is tied to the Apple ID used to facilitate that transaction. This is not a requirement.
    Again, you need to become more familiar with the distribution process and not worry so much about the Apple ID scheme involved at the moment so you can make an informed decision, I think

  • How can I share iBooks authored by me using iBook Author on 2 different iPads synced to two different computors? Both iPads have different iTunes accounts.

    I am in the process of authoring an eBook using iBook Author.  The project is a work in progress and I want to share the draft with other collegues.  We each have our own iPads synced with other computers and we have different iTunes acounts.  I attempted to preview the book on the new iPad, but the iPad did not come up in the available device window.
    Am I missing something or is there a way around this?

  • A few questions about audio player in iBooks Author

    1. How can I set the player to a small icon in Landscape layout? It seems that I have to display the player in the Landscape layout and show a big icon (which can't be resized) in the sidebar of the Portrait layout. Is there a way to customize this?
    2. I notice that the audio player in iBooks Author looks different from that in the actual iBook on iPad?
    In iBooks Author it's silver, which looks pretty nice:
    But in actual iBook on iPad it becomes black:
    Is it possible to customize the look of the player?
    3. Another problem about the player in the actual iBook on iPad: When I have multiple players on the same page, only one of them shows the progress bar and time; others just show a play button:
    If I click the one which only has a play button, the whole player will disappear (and won't play the audio clip). I must click the area (which the player is supposed to be in) again, and the player will show up with the progress bar and time (and other players will only have a play button).
    This is very annoying. Does anyone have the same problem?

    assuming you have a MovieClip mc on stage with the registrationpoint in the center:
    stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, zoomHandler);
    var currentZoom:Number = 1;
    var zoomFactor:Number = 1.1;
    var maxZoom:Number = 2;
    function zoomHandler(e:MouseEvent):void{
        var zoomCenter:Point = new Point(e.stageX, e.stageY);
        var mcCenter:Point = new Point(mc.x, mc.y);
        var _xCorrection:Number = mcCenter.x-zoomCenter.x;
        var _yCorrection:Number = mcCenter.y-zoomCenter.y;
    currentZoom +=zoomFactor-1;
    if(currentZoom<maxZoom){
        mc.scaleX +=zoomFactor-1;
        mc.scaleY +=zoomFactor-1;
        mc.x -=_xCorrection*zoomFactor*.5;
        mc.y -=_yCorrection*zoomFactor*.5;
    else{
    trace("maximal zoom level reached");

  • Error Message in iBooks Author

    I am trying to export an .iba file made in iBooks Author to my computer but I am getting an error message saying that I need to check for space and permission. It is not a space issue as there is plenty of storage remaining. I am wondering if there is some sort of permission setting that I am missing.
    The original iba file was created by another teacher and I am editing it. Is there a feature in iBooksAuthor that prevents multiple people from exporting the original file??

    Are  you trying to use File > Export to create a file in the .ibooks format?  Or something else?
    Did you already Save it?

  • Looking for iBooks Author vendor

    Looking for iBooks Author vendor to create multiple books based on an existing template. The books are operative techniques for the orthopaedic surgery industry. Need an idea of cost to outsourse. Here are the specs:
    7 chapters
    the first page of each chapter is an overview of the chapter that includes hyperlinks to each step in the operative technique
    total of 44 pages
    each page has at least one video widget (some pages have two), a photo gallery widget plus a static image and text
    glossary index with 100 entries that include text and photos (would love to find someone who can program including collada 3-D images into the glossary. but that is a nice to have, not a need to have)
    all images require resizing for the ibook (they are print images)
    all videos require compression for the ibook
    half of the pages have 3-d collada files
    heavy typesetting is required
    three pages include large interactive images with 20 labels
    Looking for estimates to present to the company on the cost to outsourse as well as find possible vendors to talk to and provide more detail.
    thanks.

    i apologize. here is my contact email if anyone is interested in talk more about this.

  • IBooks Author: How do you get the inset margins applied to the caption text of gallery widgets to preview correctly?

    Currently the inset margins I set for caption text in the gallery widget reset to zero when previewed on different iPads. These galleries have multiple images and the captions are set to "individual caption per image" on the widget interaction panel. BUT the inset margins preview correctly if the gallery caption is set to "same caption for all images" in the gallery widget interaction panel. How does one fix this in iBooks Author? Would appreciate any advice or work arounds or suggestions.
    Thanks!

    The arrows don't show up on the iPad, they are only to aid navigation within iBA. You can use boxes in the background to frame your galleries (as the background is off). I believe it's also possible to change the colour of the dots beneath the gallery too, although I forget how to do that right now.
    About Apple's rigid UX – I agree that it can be frustrating. Apple intended iBA to be used by everyone, and the sort of design options and customisability we might want may confuse the less experienced user. Apple also wanted the UI for every book to be the same – from the point of view of the new user, once you've used one iBA ebook (or iBook, I'm not sure what Apple want us to call it), you can use them all. Otherwise end users would to get used to a slightly different UI on each book, which kind of works against the idea that ideally UI should be intuitive enough to be invisible. I can see the point in that. I have created a 'How to use' section in every iBA file I've made. It get's old quickly.
    Oh, and (you probably know this, but…) you can choose your own custom icon for audio. It's limited, as it's only a placeholder image that allows you to play an audio file, there's no ability to pause the audio or stop it once you choose the view as thumbnail choice. Something I'd like to see changed.
    Here's a link to Apple feedback page for iBA. Feel free to hammer it with your suggestions.
