Multiple backups help

Rescue and Recovery 4.50.0025.00, Widows 7Pro, Thinkpad W530.
I acquired this system in May 2014. It appears I have been backing up to two locations, my local C: and my USB HDD. I have been reading a number of posts* that likely relate. My question is what backups can I delete? In the basic version, it looks like I can delete any or all. In the advanced version I can only delete the USB versions. I have the scheduled backups set to the USB drive, but the incrementals and one original are on the C: drive. I would like these to all be on the USB drive. How do I make it do that? The Task Scheduler, mentioned in the first link, is set to L instead of U for the location, despite being set to the USB in the RandR program. Can someone help me sort this?

Basic RandR
From the Advanced RandR - menu item Backup / View all backups
From the Advanced RandR - menu item Advanced / deleta backups

I will give you some RNR tips. Most of these  tips are covered in many, many posts I have replied to about RNR.
Since you took a lot of time constructing your post, I will take my time to give up a GREAT response.   You found 2 posts I created or responded to.  This is for you and all other forum users. One day I will figure out how to Teal highlight a screen capture.
.===
These tips are for Rescue and Recovery, NOT the one key recovery product that Lenovo also ships
=====
You state: I am not sure how this happened - "Your target backup location is set to USB..." scheduled backup location is Local.>>> This a bug in your RNR release.  Anytime you change backup location to Second or USB, the task scheduler entry would always set location to Local.  Until you did a VIEW Backups, you would not catch this bug.
Yes taking a manual backup (to second/USB) would work, then next scheduled backup would go to LOCAL.
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Rescue-and-Recovery-4-5-Incremental-backup-rev...
It took Lenovo from November 2011 until June 2012 to respond to the bug I identified day one of rnr 4.50, the version you have installed.
===
The simplied GUI backs up with different logic then the advanced menu. I never use the simplied menu. As you have seen with the delete panels.  Also, RNR acts different if multiple partitions on Second/USB.  Simplied panel chooses a different parition then the Advanced GUI.
===
RNR uninstall will delete \rrbackups folder on the C drive (and any backup sets inside).
After a RNR install, during the 1st run, the \RRbackups folder is created on the C drive.  It will say take backup now? If your reply YES,  it will take a FULL BASE backup to local (\rrbackups on C drive), since parms have not been changed.
===
During any FULL BASE backup, disconnect from the Internet and disable your anti-virus product.  Run times will be cut in half.  This assumes you are happy that no viruses are on your system.
===
New backup location (second or USB):
(1) It will populate the USB with standalone RNR, this will take several minutes.
(2) It will create \rrbackups folder (now you have 2; one on C; one on USB).
(3)It will take a FULL BASE backup. Some Index tables are stored in BOTH \rrbackups  (same table).
(4) Uninstall of RNR will leave USB \rrbackups file intact. If reinstalling same Version, all ok.  If installing a NEW version,rename \RRbackups on USB to a differnt name.  (no mix and match).  The bootable files will self update. The first backup will be FULL Base backup.
==
Warning:
A USB-HDD vs a USB pendrive/stick/flashdrive.  USB flash drives have a TOTAL  similar/different set of issues with  RNR.  My comments are towards USB-HDD.
===
Backup to CD/DVD
(1) This will be a FULL base backup of your current system. \rrbackups folder NOT used.
(2) Disc 1 should be a CD.  It can be a DVD.  This is standalone RNR. When you run Create Rescue Media, it is creating this same CD.   This will be labeled BOOT.
(3) Subsequent DVDs are loaded with backup data. These you label 1C, 2C, 3C.   C=c drive.
You might see another set, backing up the service partition.
  The last DVD used is called FINAL.  It actually contains a dump of the index tables.
To do a restore from CD/DVD set
(1)Boot standalone RNR (disc 1).  It will ask for FINAL dvd to load the index tables.
(2) Then will ask for 1C, 2C .... etc data files
(3) Upon completion, it will reboot to the C drive and boot up!
====
How many places can I find standalone RNR?
First and foremost, the standalone RNR MUST match the version that took the backup!!!!!!!!!!!
Anytime you install a newer RNR version be aware of which areas below got updated to NEW RNR.
(1) preloaded systems. standalone RNR is stored in the recovery partition/service partition/Q drive.
(2) For a system without a LENOVO recovery partition, the standalone software is installed on the C drive.
.... (1) or (2) boot up entries are changed to support PF11.
... RNR does not like Ubuntu or any other similar software installed. BCD, boot up confusion..
(3) If you backup to SECOND/USB, the boot software will be added or will  self update during next backup.
(4) If you run Create Rescue media, the target device will contain Current RNR standalone.
This device could be a CD, Second HDD or USB-hdd.
(5) If you take a backup to CD/DVD set, the 1st CD/DVD is the standalone bootable.
Thus:
(1) If you use the dvd set for a restore, boot using the 1st cd/dvd.  You could boot via pf11 to bring up standlone RNR.  This will be the version on the C drive or in the recovery partition.  It may or may not match the version that took the backup.   OOPS! is not a fun word when your restore wont work.
(2) If you create cd/dvd sets every 6 months, label CD1 with the RNR version installed at that time. Thus if your C drive has a newer RNR installed, you can still use your old DVD backup set from the past.
======
MAX backup incremental? What to set it too?
(1) The quick answer is 32.  NEVER 3. The current version defaults to 16.
(2) The takes forever MERGE process.  I will use your USB drive.
Base backup=30 GB incremental 1 is 9 GB.
IF max=3 hits, it will COPY the 30GB to a workarea   blending in the 9 GB
It will then crunch on the \rrbackups folder updating tables.
It will FINALLY take your backup.
Newer RNR, I think, merges 1+2, base (0) not included.
(3)All my merges for years will pop up with a NOT ENOUGH SPACE on HDD for a merge, This is a bug.
It will fail over and over.  Workaround: increase max incrementals number.
===
How should I delete older backups?
(1) the simple answer, NEVER delete a backup.
(2) If you delete a backup, start with the most RECENT incremental backup.  NOT one in the middle of the pile.
Select it. It will take about 5 minutes to delete (not 10 seconds).
You can also take the top 10 MOST RECENT backups.  It will take 50 minutes run time.
This does not use the merge function.
(3) It you delete in the middle of the pile.
It will do a MERGE!!!!! and run forever!!!!!! It must go through ALL the backup tables and make adjustments as to where all the files are now located.
==
\RRbackups is a hidden folder.  If you want to peak inside you will have to change windows security(covered in another post).
===
My yearly all in one tips.  They are covered in many posts out here.
===
Back to original post:
(1) RNR does not support backup to multiple USB( IT might). Newer versions added  Device INFO to the tables
(2) better use of USB
usb 1 :with rnr on it.
usb 2: WINDOWS backup. also create a windows repair disc on CD/USB.
(3)windows 8 does not support RNR.  Time to use windows backup. IT IS EXTREMELY fast.  You could also take windows backups to both of  your USB.
(4) Use other software to backup your personal files  daily /weekly/monthly.  NEVER rely on RNR to backup personal files. You need dual backups of data; Triple sets are best. OPPS! cd has a scratch on it.
(5) When my max incrementals approachs 32, I just delete the LATEST 16 backups, and wait 80 minutes for completion.  What happens when 32 hits? It just merges away every backup run. I did test this. It actually creates 33. Bug?
(6) I have a 1 TB USB-HDD. Invest $60 or so (on sale), and get a large USB-HDD.  Less headaches!!
Standalone RNR would not boot on the USB-HDD.   I copied loved data from the USB to my C drive.  I did NOT copy the \rrbackups folder. I uninstalled RNR.  I had to Format the USB using diskpart, SET THE PARTITION active. (This is covered in another Lenovo post).  Reinstalled RNR. Backup to USB.  It will NOW boot to standalone rnr.
This applies to Create Factory recovery media and rescue media.
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht002724
Your system might have a updated version.
(7)If your system is stable:
a. uninstall RNR.  The C drive backups  will disappear. (you could try deleting the top 10 backups before the uninstall t to see how it works).
b.Install latest RNR.
c. Take bi-yearly backup to Cd/DVD set
d. Figure out your USB device.  If loved data, copy to C drive
e. Fomat the USB making sure partition is set to active. (another post)
f. Set max incrementals to 32. Change location to USB.
g. As time permits, add windows backups to the same USB.
h.  You MUST test your disaster recovery plan. MUST MUST. Dont wait for HDD is smoked day.
..... back up to USB using RNR. backup to USB  Take windows backup.
... back up ALL personal data to DVD or somewhere else besides the HDD.
...do not do this on a rainy day.  Power outages dont help.  Allow 5 hours for the test.
add a junk file to the C drive. Junk.txt.  It should not be there after a restore.
....here we go.  Restore your HDD using standalone RNR and your USB.
>>>> This is just my ideas for what you can do.  Review the steps and find what fits for you.

  • Multiple backups of same iPhone on one computer possible?

    Moved this over here from a different area in hopes of getting more eyeballs on it.
    Does anyone know if it is possible to have multiple backups of the same iPhone on your computer? I have tried changing the name of the phone (ex. my_iPhone, myiPhoneA) but it still only lists one phone (the most recent name) in the "iPhones backed up on this computer" list in itunes. If anyone has been able to do this, or just knows it could be done, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Also, does anyone know where the computer actually stores the backup info. Assuming I could overwrite an existing backup file with them, being able to navigate to and save those files would allow me to do pretty much what i am looking to.
    thanks,
    christian

    Yes. It's possible to have more than one backup of your iPhone on your computer. The backup is stored in this folder: Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup in your users profile. You have to disconnect your iPhone, navigate to the folder, move that folder to another part of your computer, and then plug your iPhone back in. This should create another backup in that folder. Then if you add the folder that you moved back in. You'll have two different backups. This is a link to the article where I got this info from. It also has the other places backups are kept on your computer.

  • How do I save multiple backups for one device in iTunes?

    Hey, I manage multiple iPads here at my school and had a question about iTunes backup. We want to have multiple backups from the past for each device so that we can restore the device from an old backup if something goes wrong. We have over 180 iPads so I need something quick and automated. Any ideas?
    We are also using a Mac Server if that helps any.

    Since what we're really talking about now is a script to basically rename files you might want to ask on a more specific Applescript or automator forum. Alternatively, perhaps one of the utilities below might suffice.

    These are older links but they may have been updated for later OS versions.

  • Contacts with Multiple Backup Assistant + Contacts Entries

    I have read others with these same issues.  Unfortunately, the responses they are getting have to do with having multiple contacts and joining those contacts.  That is not the issue.  The issue is that each contact has MULTIPLE Backup Assistant + Contact entries.  Meaning, when you you start typing a name to send a text message to, it shows you multiple phone numbers for that person (only, they are all the same phone number).  For example, if I start typing Zoe, it will show you contacts that match, it will have Zoe 555-555-5555 listed 6, 7, 8, or more times.  But wait, that is the home number, how you keep scrolling them until you get to the mobile number which is also listed 6, 7, 8 or more times.  When you go into you contacts and select Zoe, and then go to Edit, you see why - There are 6, 7, 8 or more Backup Assistant + Contacts entries!!!  These duplicates are what we are wanting to know how to remove.  My daughter has only one phone number, but when I click on the her picture in the favorite contacts widget, it shows 2 and they are both the same.  Even the BAL #225 shows up EIGHT times!!!!!   When you go online (to the Backup Assistant), they are all listed there too.  HELP!!!!!!!

    I have no prblem syncing multiple mobile numbers so I don't think it's a universal issue with iOS. The only difference I see is I am using CardDav instead of using the Exchange option. Have you tried it that way? You can urn off contacts in the Exchange account and add the CardDav account separately.

  • Time Machine NAS Backup HELP!!!

    Have been in and out of a local mac store to no avail.
    Heres the story so far.....
    A few weeks ago I made a time machine backup of my Macbook on a Buffalo linkstation NAS. I followed instructions from the internet in which I made a sparsebundle image on local HD, move it to NAS, then tell Time machine where the new file is (or something very similar to that)
    This was done and after waiting 14 or so hours it completed.
    The next day I went into timemachine and could travel back through the 3 backups it had made.
    All working fine
    2 days later my laptop was stolen. This laptop has all of my teaching resources, all of my student marks on it. I felt relieved remembering that I had made my backup.
    When I got another laptop a few days later from school I could connect to the NAS and see the sparsebundle image ...but.... the size was changing from 7mb, to 900mb, etc. Acting very strangely.
    I left it at that and decided I would take it into a local mac store to help.
    When they plugged in and connected they could see the share point but there was no file in it. No sparsebundle image. Now I freaked at this moment thinking I had lost everything, but, when I looked at the info from the NAS it showed that 63gb were used in the timemachine sharepoint. But we couldn't see it. And have been unable to see it since connecting with a Mac to the NAS.
    I brought the NAS home and tried connecting to it with my PC and could see the sparsebundle, but it was now a Folder.
    I copied that folder to an external USB HD and took it into the mac shop again.
    Now things get interesting.
    It turns out the sparsebundle (now a folder) is 63gb large, when exploring it there is one folder within with almost all the data, in this folder there are 8000 odd files at 8mb each.
    These files are "Unix Executable Files" and the technician at the mac store is stumped. The timemachine was working with laptop. That laptop stolen, new laptop can see sparsebundle but its behaving weird, next day no laptops can see sparsebundle but PC can, next day files in the sparsebundle are "Unix Executable Files"
    Can someone please help. This backup is very important not only for my teaching resources but also a lot of student work.
    I hope someone else has had a similar problem, I am at my wits end now.
    Please Help
    Daniel

    All you could hope to do is copy the sparsebundle to a work drive then use Disk Utility to see if you can mount it and repair it. Otherwise you are out of luck as far as I can tell. If the sparsebundle is damaged and cannot be repaired by DU or if the sparsebundle cannot be mounted, then there's nothing one can do to recover the data.
    I would strongly suggest you not entrust your backups to an unsupported backup system - the NAS - using an unsupported hack. TM does not support backups to a NAS device other than a Time Capsule. Even using a USB drive connected to an AEBS is not supported (although it will work.)
    Personally I would recommend you start making multiple backups. Use TM for your daily incremental backups, but also use another hard drive and another backup tool to make a bootable clone of your hard drive. This way even if one backup goes awry you have a second one. Having taught for 30 years I understand the value of backing up the backups.

  • Windows 7 Professional Multiple Backups

    Does Windows 7 Professional enable me to schedule multiple backup jobs for different backup locations and schedules?
    I would like to create one backup job to backup my data partition (which is separate from my c:\ drive) and a c:\ disk image to an external USB drive daily, and another job to backup the same data and image to a network drive on a different schedule (weekly, for example).Windows 7 RC dual booting with VISTA Home Premium
    2 GB memory 160 HD
    Gateway Laptop
    HP Officejet 6310 All-in One inkjet printer
    Verizon FIOS Internet Connection

    Hello Christine,
    i do not know whether you still get alerts for this Thread....but since you wrote "can you please let me know what are your consideration in creating two backup jobs of the same data to seperate locations", I will describe my own considerations.
    1) My most important backups are weekly incremental backups on a local disk
    2) To protect myself against a catastrophe (e.g. my house could burn, burglars could steal all my Hardware,....) i also backup less frequently (typically around every month or every two months) the same data to a set of two external disks, that I store remotely in the safe of my bank.  I create a backup on one of these two disks, go with this disk to my bank, store it in the safe, take with me at home the other one of these two disks that was in the safe, wait one or two months, create again backup on that disk, go to the bank,......)
    3) In addition, I backup a "small subset" of the above data dayli to an internal disk.  This small subset consists of the folders used for my "active projects" (for my active projects, that I am working intensively on, I do not wish to take the risk of losing one week worth of work/changes.... this loss would be too large)
    If interested to know which data is backed-up in item 1) and 2) above:
      -  a System Image Backup of my C: partition
      -  a File/Folder backup of my "data files" located on the :H partition (on same physical disk as the C: partition). This is around 20 GB wort of data and includes among other my Word documents, .pdf files, Windows Live emails, downloaded Webpages, IE Favorites,  MS Word dictionary, ...)
       - a File/Folder Backup of the large amount of Photo Files (today 120 GB; I expect a rapid size increase, among other because I will soon scan my old slides and will soon start to use the .RAW photo format that results in larger photo files)
    A technical detail that might seem irrelevant for your developers but that is essential for me: when "switching" from a weekly incremental Backup written to my local/internal disk to a backup written to my external disks, it is essential for me that the Backup Software does not perform again after every such "switch" a Full Backup (this is what Windows Backup is currently doing in W7). For me, with my large amount of photo files,  I can not afford to do often a Full Backup.
    In this context, I should also describe that I want to keep my photo file backups for a long period of time.  Because it is quite likely, that it is only in one or two years that I will detect current problems wit a subset of my photos (I have a lot of photos, that I will only look-at again in one or two years). Therefore, I do not want a solution that (because of disk space considerations) will need to overwrite a 6 month old Full Backup with the most current Full Backup. I therefore need to avoid frequent switching from Incremental backup to a new Full Backup.
    Another detail:  For me it is important to be able to have trust in the quality of the Backup Software. This is especially important for the relative fragility of incremental backups (incremental backups are more fragile, because they depend on the availability and quality of multiple backups). This is why I recently decided to perform my weekly incremental backups with Windows Backup (as opposed to a incremental backup with a Backup Software that I bougt recently from another Software Company and that is faster and more flexible but less reliable than Windows Backup).
    If you allow me to deviate from the subject: my most important problem with Windows Backup is the lack of detailed documentation. In a attempt to "keep it simple", too much information has been sacrified in the documentation. Even the otherwise excellent "Windows 7 Inside Outside" book does not contain sufficient descriptions.  I am loosing extremely much time, just because of the lack of detailed documentation. Backing Up reliably is for a lot of users something essential.... and to do it reliably, we need more detail information than your team thinks.
    Some few final words: in case you know him, I would like to express my gratitude to "Gordon 7" who provided me
    a lot of very useful information and help on Windows Baup in the Thread " http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/f83c4cf3-15d6-4eb2-816b-63b7184e5dca    "

  • How can I save multiple backups of my iPhone?

    This weekend I purchased a new 13" MacBook Pro. In the process of transferring data from my old MacBook Pro to the new one I almost lost all of the data from my iPhone. In the process I realized that by default iTunes only keeps one instance of the backup data - the most recent one.
    To avoid such a near miss in the future and to add some healthy redundancy into my life, I would like to be able to keep at least one additional backup copy of my iPhone data. Elsewhere it has been suggested to periodically copy the backup folder to another location. This seems terribly inefficient. Is there a more Apple-like way to create and manage multiple backups of my iPhone and iPad data?
    Thanks!

    That's the only suggestion I have seen (or maybe renaming the files where they are).  It is most un Apple-like for a person to want to do anything than how the programs are set up to do things! You're making life complicated.
    I guess if you were absolutely deteremined to make it "easier" you could write an Applescript to automate the  copying process.

  • How to keep multiple backups of an iphone in itunes

    I have two iPhones, both of which are iPhone 4 with latest iOS 6.1.2. Everytime I connect one iPhone with iTunes on my windows-based computer, it generates a new backup on the computer thus now there exist more than ten backups of this iPhone (labeled with different dates in iTunes->Preference->Devices). However, everytime I connect the other iPhone with iTunes, it updates the latest backup on the computer thus now there exist only two backups of that iPhone. I've not found any setting different betwee those two iPhones. Since sometimes I need to restore iPhone from an old backup, how can I explicitly ask iTunes to keep multiple backups like the former iPhone?
    I know this can be done manually if I rename the corresponding backup folder in ...\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup. I'm just looking a more "automatic" way in iTunes setting.
    Thanks.

    Hi Venkat,
    Why u want to do with CM25?
    Do you have to do splitting before dispatching the operations?
    If not you can do the same through CM27
    Just need to select all the operations of the order(By pressing shift) then click on Dispatch(press F5)
    Still iam doubtful about your question,pls revert

    Hi
    Hint is : A row with the same key already exists it means , It is assigning the same value/Key to row and you are calling it at WDDOINIT  so it giving error at the time of initialization .
    Better way to do the coding at some event in view OR if not possible than just execute the first value help in wddoinit later clear all the value before gettig the other Value help. Code it at WdDoModify View to get its run time behaviour.

    Snow Leopard installed, a WD mybook external usb hard drive setup with TM, but...
    1) hard drive doesn't always get recognized
    2) manually mount drive
    3) TM works once or twice
    4) go to bed or leave computer alone and fin out that multiple backup.backupdb folders are all over your desktop.
    Since installing 10.6.1 nothing but problems with TM!! I've reformatted, repartitioned and reinstalled drivers for WDmybook. Totally frustrated with Snow Leopard!

    First clue.

    Second clue.

    Third clue.

    OSX is having some sort of trouble communicating with your WD drive. Check with WD for firmware updates, and even newer drivers. Try different ports, cables. Make certain all connections are tight and secure. If the WD has a separate power supply, try plugging-it in to a different outlet (or, preferably, the same surge protector or U.P.S. system your Mac is on).
    Exclude it from any anti-virus scanning.
    Exclude it, at least temporarily, from Spotlight indexing, via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
    Temporarily un-check the +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep ...+ option in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
    How old is this drive? You may be seeing the first signs of it beginning to fail. All HDs do fail, of course: some sooner, some later.

  • How to verify iTunes is overwriting or making multiple backups

    I have an iPad2 with iTunes 10.7.0.21 in Win7 x64 and wanted to determine whether iTunes is simply overwriting the previous backup with the current one or whether in fact it is keeping multiple backups so that I can restore the iPad if need be to the state in which it was say 4 backups ago.
    If I go to Edit | Prefeences| Devices it shows only the one backup for the iPad in the list.

    Create a smart playlist to include everything you've added since whenever you last backed up.
    File>New smart playlist
    Match the following rule
    Date Added is after "whatever date you last backed up"
    Make since?

  • Delete multiple backups in time machine?

    Is there a way to delete multiple backups in TIme Machine and not have to delete old files one by one by slow one by one?

    Yes, sort of.  You can delete indiividual backups, or all backups of selected items,via Time Machine.  See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  You can only select one backup at a time, but they're deleted in a separate process, so you can select another before the first one completes.  When you exit from Time Machine, you may see one or more progress bars for the individual deletions.  (As noted there, never delete anything from your backups via the Finder.)
    But you really shouldn't have to do that.  Time Machine will delete your oldest backups automatically, when it needs room for new ones.
