Multiple booting - through esata port, usb, firewire

i'm testing usb, esata, firewire ports for multiple booting and if anyone has also experimented just let me know p.s i remember there was another topic last year about it

I have tried to boot from eSATA, and I discovered a trick.  In the BIOS, you have to switch the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE (aka legacy, compatibility, or just off).
I have a Y450 with a built-in eSATA port and an Intel ICH9 SATA controller.  I  bought an external powered enclosure that has an eSATA connector.  The BIOS would not recognize the external drive, and so wouldn't list it in the boot order.  It would recognize and boot from it via the USB connection however.  Also, even though not recognized by the BIOS when connected via eSATA, once Windows 7 booted up, it found and used the drive just fine.  I was able to partition and format it in Windows 7 over the eSATA connection.  I was also able to boot Linux from CD-ROM, and then it also was able to see the eSATA drive (and install Linux).  I just wasn't able to boot from it.
I experimented with settings in the BIOS, and found that if I set the SATA mode to IDE, then the BIOS did recognize the eSATA drive, list it in the boot order, and could boot from it.  I've had no problems booting and running Linux on the eSATA drive this way, and performance measurements are close to the manufacturer's specs for average read throughput.  What I lose without ACHI is native command queueing (which could provide a performance in random read cases), and hot plugging.  Oh well.
The big pain is that I have to switch back to ACHI in order to boot Windows 7 on the internal drive.  Otherwise I get the blue screen of death, due to Windows expecting SATA devices, not IDE.
I think Lenovo could fix the BIOS if it wanted to.  I wish it would...

  • Belkin MacMini 6 Port USB/Firewire Hub  F5U507

Does anyone have the Belkin F5U507 6 Port MacMini USB/Firewire Hub?
I want to buy it but I'm hesitating, being concerned that it doesn't have its own AC power unit to attach to the wall socket.
It does look nice, matching up to the Mini, but I don't want it to be a case of more form than substance.
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks.

Well, this may be an "oopsie" for me then. I just purchased this hub a couple of days ago from the Apple store (my powered Belkin hub - the lozenge-shaped one - just failed).
I was wondering how they got around the fan-out issue with the new hub being unpowered. Well, I have time to cancel the order.

  • Route multiple VLANs through single port

    Hello,
I have a series of 3560g's setup. I am going to be connecting two of them between different offices via a fiber cable. I use 3 VLANs and am unable to find a way to make this work.
Each site will have 5 switches. 2 for VLAN1, 2 for VLAN2, and one that has VLAN1-3 on it. Is it possible to link the two sites together with the single cable in a manner that allows the two connected to route the 3 VLANs through this one cable?

Just to clarify, only the ports, on the link between the switches, are defined as trunk ports.
By default, each switch will send all its defined VLANs to the trunk port.  If both switches have the same VLAN, those VLANs will become logically one.

  • RAID through eSATA Port Multiplexer problem

Hi.  I have 3*1GB HDs that are connected to a AD5SARPM-E SATA Port Multiplexer, whitch was connected to a Macbook through a SATA II PCMCIA card. I Think (but an not sure) it was setup as RAID 1 (Software RAID).  I am trying to access the data.
Is my best bet to plug the drives into the MAC via SATA?  If so will it automaticaly sence the RAID setup.  Is there a way of doing this and keeping the drives RO so I dont accidentely  trash the (verry important) data.
Cant think where else to ask.
    Ben

Thanks for the reply.  I've tried combinations of all three.  Usually I power up my computer, then plug in the drive and turn it on, but I've also tried plugging the drive in while it's running, and starting up the computer with the drive plugged in and running

  • How to connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

  • Multiple external drive problems, both USB and Esata

Everything worked well in Tiger on my first gen MBP. Since i switched to Leopard and now Snow, and a new UNI MBP in december 08 I have so many external drive issues.
USB drives just disappear and power off (from the system not electrical) for no reason, mostly when connected to USB hubs. I've tried various hubs including the powered ones. But as soon as i go over two USB devices in the provided ports my problems start.. It feels like not enough juice is getting through those ports on my MBP. I never have a problem if i just connect 2 devices into the MBP, but it's not enough (i have 5x1tb external drives).
Also the same with the express34 slot.. Everything was fine under Tiger and my old MBP, But now i get the grey wall of death so many times when connecting 2x esata 1TB drives. The system is so unstable with multiple drives both USB and. I'm currently working as a pro Photographer on assignment in Asia and these stability are starting to become a big problem.
God forbid i'm even considering a switch back to windows for reliability, (yes, i did use the words windows and reliability in the same sentence)
Does anybody else experience problems with multiple drives through leopard/snow leopard via Apple notebooks? I would love to hear some users experiences and hopefully find a solution to my problem.. In every other way the system works like a charm.
I will post in 2 forums because i'm not sure if software or hardware related.
    Thanks, any help is appreciated.

    @ Gregory
All my drives are 3.5" HD's all with external power cables along with a mains powered USB hub. Sorry, i didn't state that clearly in the original post (i thought the hint of all drives being 1TB was a dead giveaway:)).. However, this still doesn't explain the same behaviour of the 2x1TB esata drives which actually work well if no external USB drives are connected. Sorry i'm not technical but does the expresscard slot share any bridge, bus or power connectivity with the USB slots??
I'll try this SMC reset that S.U mentioned...
Thanks for everyones help and ideas so far.

Have you tried booting from a Linux Live CD, e.g. Ubuntu , just to make sure that it's not software related?

  • I need a usb-firewire solution. running out of ports!

    Hi,
THe two usb ports supplied on my MBP are not enough and i already have a powered usb hub connected to each port, further connecting several devices and hdds!
now simple things like making a TM backup are running slow because of like 2 to 3 hdds connected to hubs on each port.
my firewire port has been lying latent and i was wondering if there was some sort of a hub that would connect to my mac's firewire and inturn allow me to connect usb 2 or 3 devices on its interface?
i'm sure that if a usb 2 port can take extensions of 7 and 10 devices via hubs, a firewire port running at 800 mpbs could take much more traffic.
if there is an ethernet based solution, then that would be even better! cause there i would have a 1gbps bandwidth to spare.
please link me to the right product please. google confuses me and i can make out from the specs as to how the hubs it lists, work.
    thanks for stopping by.

Hi JMF, I had the same issue as you, but I found a USB drive that does fit next to a standard sized USB cable. It is a Verbatim USB Mini Swivel and comes in sizes from 1GB to 8GB. You can get these through the Online Apple store. Hope this helps.

  • Sony Camcorder with Firewire & USB to L505-S6946 Laptop eSATA or USB

I would like to use my Sony camcorder's Firewire or USB port to download to my L505-S6946 Toshiba Satellite (Windows 7) laptop but the laptop does not have a firewire port and it is not seeing the camcorder when I try the USB port. The laptop only has USB and eSATA ports.  There is no slot for PC or Express cards for a Firewire adapter either.
Is there any way to make the USB or eSATA connection work?
Sony support for Windows 7 says that the drivers for the camcorder are already on the laptop and that USB streaming is not supported.  That leaves me with trying to find a way to connect to the eSATA port on the laptop.  Any help on getting the camcorder to download to the laptop would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Join the club. I've been searching for a while without much luck. Right now there appears to only be one company which makes a Firewire to USB cable. Good luck finding a place that sells it though.
    http://www.pixela.co.jp/en/products/tv_capture/pix_uvcd_u1w/index.html
There are apparently USB/Firewire hubs like this one from IOGear but I have yet to find one that allows for only a USB connection on the computer side, so far they all appear to require a firewire port on the computer in additon to the USB port. Hopefully there is a device out there at relatively low cost that will allow for firewire to usb for those laptops (of which there are more and more) that don't have a firewire port or a cardbus/pcmcia slot.
What I've been doing in the mean time is to use a desktop compter with a firewire card to capture the video, then transfer (via network or external hard drive) to the L505 to do further editing from there. I didn't think that not having a firewire port would be an issue when I bought the laptop but it became one.

  • Esata, usb, firewire

I want to get some info about harddrives or cases. my dvr has usb, firewire, and esata ports. my blackbook has usb and firewire. my 360 has usb. should I buy an esata drive and a case that supports all three, or just a plain ole usb drive.

Right now eSATA is not too common on computers, so it would be something that you would be paying for that you would not use for a while.
I would get a good USB/FW drive that uses the Oxford 911 chipset like those from OWC found HERE. Avoid the more common and cheaper Prolific chipsets as they are not as reliable or stable as the Oxford chipsets - for both Macs or PCs.

  • Can't plug USB into eSata port

The description for my dm4t says that the eSata port doubles as a USB port. Has anyone tried to connect a USB in that port? It does not fit.

    Hi Corrine.sant,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities,
With regards to USBs, you cannot plug in/use USBs that contain anything other than photos in an iPad Air and there are no adaptors that would allow you to do this.
If you were wanting to transfer images from USBs, you can go here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD821ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter.
If you were wanting to transfer documents from your USB to your iPad, you could look at either emailing them (depending on the size), creating a DropBox and accessing them on your iPad or save them to iCloud, through your Mac.
This would allow you to get access to the documents, through apps like Pages, Numbers and Keynotes.
Many Thanks and I hope I have given you the information that you need to access your USB files

  • External Drives: 2.5" (portable)? Interface for booting up (USB/Firewire)?

It's getting hard out there to find an external drive that has both USB and Firewire connections. But if something goes wrong with my system and I need to boot up from an external, does the iMac G5 require the external to be Firewire?
Also, there are a lot of external drives that are described as "portable" (2.5"). Can I use one of those portable drives as an external drive for a desktop system (like iMac G5 - has 3.5" internal drive)? Or are these 2.5" portable drives meant to be used just for laptops?
    Thanks all.

Yes, the boot drive had to be firewire, but you can use a 2.5 portable as long as it has OS X on it and is firewire(I use SuperDuper! to make a bootable clone).

  • USB/FireWire Ports Issue

So before I go into the apple store and ask for this computer to be repaired/replaced, I would like to see if anyone knows if something can be done about this issue I have pinpointed..
Basically when I have more than a few USB/FireWire ports connected, one or more of the devices does not function properly. This has happened with two external hard drives - which should have no problem being connected simultaneously.. When I try to eject one of them, I receive a message stating that it cannot be ejected because one or more programs may be using it.. although all programs are closed, causing me to have to force eject..
Also, I plug in one drive and open the other in finder to back it up, and all of the folders in the drive are suddenly empty.. nothing inside. I go to Get Info.. Zero KB.. I try ejecting, but receive the same message, so I force eject, plug it back in, and wala, all the files are back in the right place..
This has also happened in the past when my cinema display and a printer were plugged in simultaneously.. the computer won't detect the USB of the cinema display -- which only means that the speakers of the display won't work + no brightness control from the keyboard.. so i let it slide.. but now with this external hard drive issue, i need to solve the problem..
    Thank you for reading..

Same here. Since a few weeks, my MacPro ejects USB HDD's as soon as I write or read data on it.
(no I haven't installed something new at this time and all HUB's and HDD's have their own power supply, and yes they have been exchanged, so its not a broken cable or so !!!!!!!!)
After a reset of the NVRAM and PRAM its better for an hour or so, then starts to eject again.  I've seen a lot of communities with exact the same question, but never a solution for it. There is also nothing in the support tab of apple.
Hope someone here can help me out or due to the fact that this is a AplleSupportCommunity, a Apple-Employee may starts to do his job and help this huge amount (I guess there are hundrets or tousand) of mac-user with exact the same problem....
btw: don't agree with MACATTACK2010 that this is a hardware problem, cause there are a lot of people in the
net that ask the same question with brandnew Hardware. I think it's an OS or an Update Bug, or may both.

  • Mac Mini KVM USB problem prevents boot when using certain USB ports

    Hi,
Just purchased a brand new Mac Mini 2.4 Quad Core to use as a server.
This morning we removed from the box & connected it to our NTI Unimux 16-port KVM. The KVM already has 10 Mac Mini's connected (various vintages, no problems).
We connected the Mini to the KVM using HDMI for video and a USB connector.
The Mini initially refused to boot past the initial white/gray screen. It never got to the Apple or the cog.
However, we found that if the USB cable from the KVM is disconnected, the Mac Mini booted immediately.
Further, the Mini will also boot with an Apple keyboard connected.
So... you may assume that the KVM cable is bad or that there is some firmware compatability issue between the KVM and this new Mac Mini.
    EXCEPT...
This Mini has 4 USB ports.
We found that the Mac Mini can boot with the KVM USB cable connected if the USB cable is connected to USB ports 2 or 4 on the Mac Mini.
If the KVM USB is connected to ports 1 or 3 on the Mini, the Mini will not boot.
The Mac Mini will boot with an Apple USB keyboard installed on any port.
Is there any logical reason for this behavior?
    Thanks,
    b

The USB port on the Express only supports a USB printer. You will need to connect the hub to your iMac.
