Multiple computers/frustrating Airport access

Hi,
Newly switching from Windows to Mac (which is a story all its own!). I have an iMac G5 and an iBook G4 with one Airport Express connected via ethernet cable to a Verizon DSL modem (Westell WireSpeed). The DSL service has worked flawlessly with my Windows machine for years. I set up the wireless network for the first time yesterday. A pop-up noted that there was a firmware update available for the Airport, and did I want to install it, which I did (it's now 6.1.1 according to my iBook.)
Sometimes I can connect with one Apple successfully, and very occasionally with both, and sometimes neither. I have apparently set up a closed network with WEP password protection. As I've read in other posts, the password (13 characters) is correctly entered, but that seems to make little difference.
I have tried unplugging both the modem and the airport for at least five minutes. That sometimes works, but not always.
This morning, the iMac connected just fine, and stayed connected for an hour or so. I then turned on the iBook, and it connected. Perhaps coincidentally, the iMac then disconnected. When I try to connect, I get the very helpful (turn sarcasm on to max level) "There was an error joining the Airport network [name]".
Checking the support docs elsewhere, I saw that it might be possible that my ISP (in this case, Verizon) might be using IP addresses that prevent more than one computer from connecting simultaneously. I checked with Verizon support, and was assured that this is not the case. They also mentioned that this was a problem that has frequently cropped up, and that they understood that Apple had a resolution.
Separately, but related, I found the Airport documentation to seem clear, but be missing some apparently key information: for example, when the Airport is set up as a base station, does that also establish a network? Or do you have to set up a network separately (using the assistant). Seems like a simple (and probably "stupid") question, but...
Thanks for any help.

I might suggest that you change the broadcast channel on either the Airport or the phone. I run an Airport Extreme to two iMacs, a PC laptop and an Airport Express to my stereo with a 2.4 gHz phone sitting 7" from the Extreme (fed by a cable modem although I doubt that's an issue vs. DSL) and have no problems at all even while using the phone.

  • Multiple computers on airport

I have an airport express connected to a dsl router, my problem is that i can only have one computer logged into the internet via the airport at a time. and when i set up the airport to run both computers in the house, only one will work.
i have called my isp and they say that it is an airport issue.
does anyone know how to get multiple computers running on the network?

thanks for the reply, however after checking that all preferences were set to the specifications that you presented i still have the same problem.
while my computer is logged into the internet, the other computer can pick up my airport but after logging in it will not actually be functional and will not load anything.
i hope that gives a little more info to my issue.

  • Can I link 2 computers via Airport & access each others drives

    Hi,
    I have the following HW.....
    - PBook G4
    - PowerMac G4
    - Graphite Airport Base Station (connected to modem for internet access)
Both cpu's subsequently access internet wirelessly as both have Airport cards built in)
I would like to know if it is possible that I can access the Powermac drive from the PB over the wireless network. I wanna be able to drop to & pull data from one to the other accordingly.
    Is this (easliy) possible?
    Thanks

Yes. Its just like using Ethernet. On the Power Mac, open the Sharing preference pane and enable File Sharing. That will allow the PowerMac to be visible to the PowerBook. More information can be found in KB 106461, Mac OS X: About File Sharing.

  • Can I have multiple computers accessing one iTunes library simultaneously?

I've purchased a Lacie Network HD that I'm keeping all of my iTunes on. I've put an alias to the iTunes library from that drive in the music folders of the computers I want to access and update it. That all works well. The only problem is that both computers cannot have iTunes running at the same time. I get an error stating that the library is locked. It would appear that I can't have multiple computers accessing the library at the same time. Is there a work around for this aside from doing network sharing via iTunes? The reason I don't want to do that is that I want both computers to have access to the actual files if I'm using the various iLife apps that use iTunes.

This is true. It's not a server app.
The nearest thing would be a library file on each machine pointing to the same set of music files. However, you might have problems if both machines try to access a particulat track at the same time. Also, changes made on one machine would not be reflected in the other. So if you rip a CD on one, the files will also have to be 'imported' to the other.

  • Can i access the same Itunes account and playlist on multiple computers

I would like to access the same I Tunes (library, play lists, etc.) on multiple computers...is this possible?

    Hello sdfarmer99,
This can be done by setting up Home Sharing on the system with the library that you want to share.

No, Lightroom catalogs cannot be on a networked (shared) drive, and they do not support simultaneous multi-user access

  • Airport express, a hotspot, and multiple computers?

    Hi,
We currently live in an apartment that has the internet available via ethernet. I have set up our airport express so that it is acting as a bridge and we can use one computer at a time to use the internet. My question is, can the airport express be set up so that it logs into the hotspot and then shares the internet to multiple computers?
I do understand that you can share an IP address but am unsure how to get the airport express to log into the hotspot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

No there is no way to configure any of Apple's base stations to do that.

  • HT203167 I've downloaded Itunes music for nearly 10 years on multiple computers, however, I've noticed that I can't access music that I purchased on some of the older computers. Can this problem be fixed?

I've downloaded Itunes music for nearly 10 years on multiple computers, however, I've noticed that I can't access previously purchased music from some of the older computers. Can all of my Itunes purchases be consolidated?

    Hello, ted_marx38.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The most common cause for this issue would be media present that is purchased with another Apple ID.  When prompted to authorize the computer it may show a different Apple ID.  If this is the case, the computer will need to be authorized for this Apple ID.  The article below will walk you through the process of verifying if that is the case or correcting the issue if not.

  • FRUSTRATION - why can't I add music from multiple computers to my iPhone??

I use multiple Mac computers in my life. My home computer has about 30 gigs of music. My work computer has about half that. Therefore syncing in any case is not an option. I have added some music from home to my new iPhone, and I want to do the same from my work computer but cannot! WHY?? I can do this with my 5th gen Video iPod no problem.
Plugged into my work computer now, I try to set the iPhone again to "manually manage music," but it still tells me the iPhone is synced with another computer (it is not, since I immediately disabled the sync feature before adding music). Is this going to be the case if I want to add photos from multiple computers, etc., too?
    WHY?? WHY??? WHY?????
    SO FRUSTRATING...

    You're welcome.
Maybe I'm missing something, but i still struggle to see the connection. Disk mode is the iPods ability to be mounted as a disk on the desktop, allowing the free disk space to be used manually. It exists completely outside the iPods normal, iTunes-driven functions, right? What we are missing on the iPhone is a simple feature from inside iTunes – a feature that all other iPods (as far as i know) have. Strange that the "Amazing iPod" does not.
Disk mode has everything to do with the ability to transfer iTunes content to an iPod from multiple computers. This is not a simple feature from inside iTunes.
Do you have an iPod? If so, are you transferring iTunes content from more than one computer to your iPod? If so, do you have disk mode enabled for your iPod? If yes, turn off disk mode and test if you are still able to transfer iTunes content from more than one computer to your iPod.
Nothing prevents me from admitting when Apple goes wrong or disappoints, but this is not the place for it. This is a user to user help forum for technical support issues and questions only which has a terms of use. Discussing Apple's policies and procedures and ranting is specifically against Apple's terms of use for these discussions.
Since this is a user to user help forum only, no one here knows Apple's reason or reasons why disk mode is not supported with the iPhone. The only answer you will get here or anywhere else for that matter is someone's opinion, unless Apple makes an announcement or information is provided by an exec during an interview. IMO, there must be a valid reason or reasons why disk mode is not supported with an iPhone since it is supported with iPods. Since disk mode is supported with iPods, more than likely there isn't a technical reason why it isn't supported with an iPhone, so I seriously doubt that Apple decided not to support disk mode with the iPhone just for kicks, or for no valid reason or reasons whatsoever on their part.
Until I know Apple's reason or reasons, it is difficult for me to admit Apple has gone wrong in this regard, for it may make Apple right for a reason or reasons we don't know, which can be disagreed on. Once facts are known, just because you believe Apple has gone wrong and/or you are disappointed doesn't mean I believe the same, which may or may not have anything to do with being an Apple fan - maybe we just don't agree.
My brand loyalty goes only so far. I did plenty of research on the iPhone before making the decision to purchase one. Before purchasing an iPhone, I can count on one hand the number of MMS I had exchanged. I have used a number of Palm handhelds for business - before they began selling a Palm cell phone, and I don't recall editing a word or excel document once during all that time. I wasn't interested in doing so with such a small screen, and since I wasn't interested in doing any editing, cut/copy/paste wasn't critical to me either.
If these features were very important to me - features I used on a daily or very regular basis, I would not have purchased an iPhone regardless the other features it includes. I certainly wouldn't purchase one anyway knowing these things, followed by wasting my time at an Apple user to user help forum for technical support issues and questions whining and ranting about it, which is common here by an immature small percentage of users. There is nothing wrong with providing constructive comments here, which constructive being the key word. There are some folks here who don't know what the word constructive means and don't have a clue about how use it.

Can I access my itunes account on multiple computers?

    What do you mean access?
You can certainly sign into your account from any computer with itunes.
Your content will only be where you put it.  You can put it/copy it wherever you like.
In some countries you can redownload some itunes purchased content:

  • Confing port 3389 to access multiple computers

Hi, I need to have access to multiple computers using the RDC from windows. I can only put to work one computer at the same time . How can I enable port 3389 for more than one computer???
    Thanks ,

You can try to use the port tiggering for the other IP's but I think a VPN would be better if you want to be able to access multiple PC's on your network.  If your router supports a VPN then use the Quick VPN software for your router version to connect with a VPN.  That will give you access to the whole network.

  • Is there any way to access a single iTunes library on multiple computers simultaneously?

    Hi,
I'm looking to set up a system whereby my music would be stored on a single computer kept on 24/7. There would be approximately 7 client computers that would access this master computer to play music from. However, the tricky part is that it would have to be able to do so simultaneously. This would be for a dance studio where there are 5 studios that run classes all at the same time and would need to be able to access music for their given classes. I don't believe this is available on iTunes but there may be other software that would be capable of this. Thanks in advance.

Also look into Music Sharing.  Since this is primarily so the groups can play music they don't need editing capability for the library file which could be a single version on a computer not even in a classroom (preventing accidental editing).

  • ITunes on multiple computers

I am purchasing a new iMac and I am keeping my old 17" MacBook Pro (it's 4 years old). Right now I am keeping my iTunes on an external HDD. I have it connected to my MacBook Pro via firewire 800. The reason I originally put iTunes on the external HDD was because I was running out of HDD space on MacBook Pro (it's only got a 120GB HDD). I have an older Apple Airport Extreme.
My question is when the new iMac arrives how do I use my external HDD (with iTunes still on it) with the new iMac. My other question is, right now when I try to access iTunes (without external HDD attached) it asks me to either create an iTunes library or choose an existing one. I realize it's because my external is not hooked up, but once I get the new iMac and get my library working with it, should I just create a new library on my MacBook Pro? Also is it even possible to have one iTunes account on multiple computers?
Or would it be easier to hook up the external HDD to the airport extreme via USB and change the path on the new iMac? And that way both computers could access the external HDD, even though the USB connection would be a lot slower then the Firewire 800.
    Thanks in advance
    Message was edited by: BillyJack

Use the external as you do now. Whenever necessary start iTunes with the option key held down so you can direct it to the correct library location on the external. Shouldn't be necessary to do this too often other than the first time, and maybe not even then if you successfully migrate all your settings from your old machine to the new first.
