I get the one spot thing, but also make sure you have your valuable files backed up.

Adding songs to an external drive (or a local drive, for that matter) does not trigger iTunes to do anything. You can add files to the iTunes library manually by the command File > Add Folder to LIbrary, or you can automate the process using 3rd party software such as iTunes Folder Watch.

  • How to use iTunes on multiple computers with an external hard drive.

I am trying to use two computers, one Macbook and one mac mini, with the same itunes library.  I have searched and found info on doing this, but it was older info and I am pretty sure that what was suggested does not work.  I can not get itunes to recognize the library files on the external drive, it will however recognize the media.  This would be fine, except the mac mini is being used as my media center and I update things on the macbook.  The thing that I am having a lot of trouble with is the home movies section.  Of course all my movies are not "movies"  so I have sorted through the "homemade" tv shows and movies, but when I switch computers, all this info goes away.  Why can't it follow the media?  I have had pretty good luck with keeping the cover art, but when I label the file as a movie or mark it as watched, this info is not transferred.  In some of the other answers people had given about this, they said itunes should ask where to go if the external drive was disconnected.  When I do it this way, itunes will just make a new file when the drive is unplugged.  I have about a thousand movies and I have changed info on these files twice now (thanks for adding home videos apple!), and it looks like I will be doing it for a third time, I just don't want to do it a fourth time on the other computer.  Any help would be great.  To break it down to the basic form, I would like to have an external drive that will sync file info between two or maybe more computers.  Is there a better solution?

Make sure the copy to iTunes media folder is unchecked.

I'm quite sure there is no "automatic" way to do this. I've never heard of anyone trying it either. I suppose if you wanted try it, you could simply create a new folder in the same partition TM is on, label it for that year, then gather all the days for that year and drag/drop them into the folder. I suspect (but do not know) you'd be risking the continuity of your backups, meaning TM would simply start over again, meaning that next back up would start a new series of backups, with the first one roughly equalling the entire capacity of your internal HD, instead of adding only the new data to the previous backup. Once again, I would recommend against it, unless you're fine with TM starting a new series of backups if it doesn't work out the way you want it to. Hope you'll post back with results so we can learn from it.

  • Backing up multiple (non-networked) computers onto 1 external hard drive

Is it possible to backup two macbooks owned by different people to one external hard drive using Time Machine?

How does that work? My time machine drive just has a Backups.backupdb folder. I think they've changed it since the early days though, to use a sparseimage, but there's no way to convert the old format to the new one is there?

  • Two computers to one external hard drive problem, pram reset...

I have a Powerbook 15" 1.0 Ghz and recently I made the mistake of connecting one external hard drive to two computers. My OWC External hard drive was connected to my powerbook via firewire 800 and my PC via firewire 400 with both on. There is a tiny little blurb on the external hard drive's instructions that says do not connect to more than one computer at a time but of course I didn't see that until after the fact. My powerbook was painfully slow so I restarted but it wouldn't come back on. I was instructed to reset the pram, which I succesfully did but now the powerbook is so slow it is unuseable. The pc works fine. Did I do any permanent damage? Do I need to reinstall OSX or what? I will kill myself if I fried something on my powerbook. Please help!!

Disconnect all devices from your PowerBook as well as power and the battery for about 30 seconds. Put the battery and power back in/on and then reset both PRAM (3 consecutive times) and the PMU. Hopefull this'll bring it back to life.
Otherwise, create a new user account and see if things are better there. It is possible that you have damaged software rather than hardware so a clean instal may do the trick.

  • Condensing iTunes from 3 computers to an external hard drive?

I have 3 computers (one G4, one PC, and a MBAir) which have iTunes on them (one account but different items on each.)  I want to transfer all my iTunes files to one external hard drive which will then be used exclusively with a Mac. Thanks in advance!

Grab all your iTunes content from each of the 3 computers (Home/Music/iTunes) and copy it to your hard drive. Then plug in the hard drive to your Mac and import all your content into iTunes.

  • Transferring Itunes data between computers using an external hard drive.

I just bought a new laptop and an external hard drive. What is the best way to go about transfering all of my 1400 songs on Itunes from my old computer to my new laptop using the external hard drive? I have purchased some songs from Itunes but mostly they were not bought there. Thanks in advance.

The guide for using the iPod as a hard drive is a good starting point. Just skip on past the part about enabling the iPod as a hard drive and read from "Is all the music together?". • VMWare Fusion, multiple virtual machines, and external hard drive

I have 3 different distributions of Linux installed with VMWare Fusion. If I was to move the virtual machine files to an external hard drive, would they still work with VMWare Fusion, or would I have to re-install the 3 Linux operating systems to the external hard drive via VMWF?

    Hi,
you can move Fusion VMs to external harddisks without re-creating or re-installing them.

  • Changing computers but not external hard drive, how to modify and delete catalogs?

Moving my relatively new 2012 Mac Mini from office back home that has LR4 and PS CS6 installed.   It has a small LR catalog that I want to delete completely.
Presently at home, I use my MacBook Pro which I want to take "offline" in regards to photo editing, which also has LR4 and PS installed and is attached to an external drive with all my pictures that I want to have recognized by the Mac Mini LR4.
    1) Can I just delete (from the Mac Mini) the Lightroom folder which contains the Backups folder, and the following files:  LR4 Catalog Previews.Irdata, LR 4 Catalog.Ircat, LR4 Catalog Ircat-journal, and LR4 Catalog.Ircat.lock?
    2) How do I create a new LR4 catalog on the Mini to existing picture folders on the old hard drive, which were previously associated with the MacBook Pro?

    1) Yes
    2) You don't create a new catalog in this situation; you simply move the catalog file from the MacBook Pro to the Mini, then double-click on it.

  • ITunes, 2 Computers; and an external Hard Drive

I am an IT tech for a company that will remain nameless. In their attempt to limit liabilities they have said all music file are to be stored on external storage owned by individuals. But iTunes is fine to use on the company computer.
My question is that I have a computer at home, and one at work. Both have iTunes, and I store all my music on an external USB drive (80gb). When I add music at home at night, I bring the drive to work and then have to go and manually add the new music to the Library there also. Most all of music is MP3 converted from CDs, no music store purchases.
Is there a way I can have both iTunes installs read the same Library file dB files, or a script I can run on a folder that will add to the library only the music that is not already there?
iPod 30GB Video   Windows XP Pro   80 GB external HDD, Home PC, and Work Laptop

Hey guys and gals, I have been looking everywhere for this answer but can find nothing. I do see a lot of questions in a support fourm that have nothing to do with support.
Stuff like not enough gospel music? How is that a support issue?
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas on this problem of mine?

  • How do I get my computers to see my external hard drive on airport extreme?

I jus purchased and airport extreme as although he directions say plug and play - it doesn't work.  None of my computers see my external hard drive when it is plugged into the airport.  Cannot locate directions with step by step support.  thank you. Nettie

The external harddrive is NTFS format and someone from apple told me that it would have to be reformatted to be seen by the Extreme -- Needless to say with 33% of the hard drive filled, I do NOT want to reformat.
Unfortunately, HDDs attached to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, cannot be recognized by the AirPort if formatted in NTFS. If you do not wish to reformat this drive, you will either have to use a different drive or connect this drive to a Windows PC for sharing on the network.
The AirPort can only share drives formatted in HFS+ or FAT32.

  • Mac and Windows shared external hard drive - possible?

Our set up is a Windows XP pc and iMac 20" and I hoped that we could back up both computers using one external hard drive - that way if the Mac failed we could still use the pc to access the files and vice versa. But having looked into buying one I'm starting to get doubts about whether it is possible. I just don't understand all the technical stuff. Can anyone help in layman's terms how we go about it?
    Thanks
    Jane

Try iFelix's excellent guides for Windows to Mac networking (link). I understand that he will do Vista versions as soon as possible.
A FAT32 formatted drive in a NAS Enclosure like this one (link) should suit you needs. Remember that a NAS drive will not have the performance of a Firewire connected drive so you do need to consider your intended usage.

  • Install Arch on External Hard Drive Bootable on Most Computers

At work I've been using a Mac OS X partition to boot up people's Macs and perform file recovery/partition manipulation. I'm trying to figure out how to install Arch Linux to an external hard drive so that it can be booted by the max number of computers, both PC and Mac. Should I go with grub, grub-efi 32 bit, grub 64, lilo, efistub, etc. for the bootloader? Can anyone give me some guidance on this?
    Thanks

With grub, you can actually specify where the config is located.  So you can put the grub config for UEFI in the same path as grub.efi, then the bios grub could still be in /boot/grub like usual.  Personally, I would use something else though, as I am not the biggest fan of grub.
I think that you need to read through the grub wiki page, as most of the grub knowledge that i have (which isn't much TBH) came from that page.  So the fact that I know this crap and I don't use it, means to me that you haven't actually read through that page very closely.  It is a wealth of information actually.
I like using the EFISTUB for UEFI, so I am more of a gummiboot or rEFInd kind of user.  Then I use syslinux as my backup bios setup.
I know nothing about requiring rEFInd for UEFI booting from an external HDD.  I have never actually tried it.  But when I set up UEFI on my old macbook in the ESP, the entry just showed up in the mac bootloader.  So unless the Macs don't respect some of the basic UEFI standards (which is a very real possibility) there should be the ability to have multiple ESPs.

  • Hey I'm a novice on computers, but i've just done a full system restore on my laptop after backing it up on an external hard-drive long story short in the back up process all my itunes converted to mpeg4 files and now i can't get them back into my my libr

Hey I'm a novice on computers but i've just done a full system restore on my laptop and put it back to factory spec, obviously i backed up all the data on an external hard-drive but when i have re-installed itunes and gone to import all my old music files from my previous itunes library as mpeg4 files it keeps telling me i don't have permission??!! *** someone please explain or tell me how to get music on to my new itunes without having to re-import every cd i own which is alot!!!

Other than iMovie, GB always incorporates the audio files into the GB package. So just save or move the GB project to the external drive, and you're done - anything you import, edit or record will be saved to the external drive.

  • How to use one music library from one external hard drive on two different computers

I have 57 gigs of music in my itunes library on my laptop (Windows Vista).  I backed up the library onto an external hard drive.  I would like to play the music on a second computer (Windows XP) without putting the music on the second computer, just keeping it on the external hard drive.
I have the latest version of iTunes and Quicktime installed.  In iTunes on both computers, under Advanced Preferences I changed the iTunes media folder location to the folder on the external hard drive and checked the boxes for "Keep iTunes media folder organized" and "copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library".  Also under the File tab, "Organize Library", I clicked on "Consolidate Files" and "Reorganize Files in the folder itunes music".
On the second computer I tried holding SHIFT while launching iTunes until the prompt appears asking to create a new library or point to an existing library.  While attempting to point to the new location, I am only able to open the music folder, not set it as the location.  In advanced preferences when I click "change" for the itunes media folder location, I can locate the folder but the only button I can click on is "open" or "cancel".  "Open" will open the folder showing all my music.  I tried typing in the location.  It shows the correct location.
I was able to see the songs in the library in itunes on the second computer but it won't play the music.  There are no exclamation points next to the songs.  I am also able to see the playlists but there aren't any songs in the playlists.
There are no problems with itunes on the first computer.  Everything works as it should.
Ideally I would like to use the same folder on the external hard drive for both computers if possible.  But for now I want to at least get the music playing with the playlists on the second computer from the external hard drive.
    Please help.

See this post on making a split library portable.
