Multiple copies of albums appearing in my iPod

Dear all,
It seems that every time I connect my iPod to my iTunes Library and sync everything, when I turn on my iPod I find that with one or two albums (and only these 'problem albums', I have not only one copy, but sometimes 5 or 6! Their titles are sometimes spelled differently with respect to upper and lower case letters, but on the iTunes there is only one version of the album, so I cannot figure out what is going wrong. When I try and delete the extra copies in iTunes, they are not there! It shows only one album. Could it be an issue with the album art?
Help, please...
Thanks,
O

In general iTunes is slightly more liberal when it comes to spelling than the iPod. As the iPod enumerates the tracks it will see each different spelling as a new artist so it may list one album multiple times. The iPod also takes no account of the Album Artist field so tracks with guest artists may also be viewed as separate albums. Disk No. & No. of disks may also affect the order in which tracks are enumerated or grouped. For a given album the following terms should all have exactly the same values. Album Title, Artist (except for Compilations), No. of Tracks, No. of Discs. & Part of a Compilation. The Sort Artist & Sort Album fields take precedence over Artist & Album and, if used, should either have the same values for all tracks, or match with the existing values for Artist & Album on other tracks.
Normally selecting all the tracks from the album and overtyping the Album, Artist & Album Artist info. is enough to fix this issue, although once I had some weird extended character that refused to be replaced in certain tracks. In this case the answer was simply to add some random info. into each field, e.g. add X onto each value, apply the changes, then remove the excess text & reapply.

    Hi AkMat.
Have you actually opened these files to see what they are yet? The few Apps I've downloaded (not from iTunes) typically come with a few files. The actual app, the instructions/help/TOU and sometimes an uninstall.

  • Multiple copies of email appearing in Apple Mail

Suddenly I am starting to see multiple copies of an email in me Apple mail client.
This seems to have started when I did the software upgrade earlier today - although I have no idea if this is a coincidence, or part of the problem.
fyi I am using Apple mail with a Google App mail account. This has worked perfectly for a number of years until today. When I look in my gmail account using the web client there is only one copy of the email.
    Any ideas?

  • How do I manging multiple copies of movies for AppleTV and iPod in iTunes?

I do not have an AppleTV yet, but I am considering getting one. I was wondering how those who have both an iPod and ATV manage the syncing of Movies that may have different resolutions?
If I want to have the same movie on ATV and my iPod I would need two copies in iTunes at different resolutions, correct? At least when I look at the iTunes export in iMovie it shows I can have a higher resolution for the ATV than the iPod.
So, how do you manage the auto syncing of these multiple copies so that they aren't all copied to both devices? iTunes doesn't have good Movie management as far as sub-folders, etc. I would like iTunes to treat these copies as one movie and only sync the appropriate resolution for the device.
I also notice that multiple copies then show up in FrontRow as well. It would be nice if only the highest resolution would show up.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Just create 2 different playlists like
    Movie-ATV
    Movie-iPod
Put those video files with higher resolution on playlist Movie-ATV
Put those video files with lower resolution on playlist Movie-iPod
in iTunes Preferences choose your ATV only to sync the 1st movie playlist - and your iPod only to sync the 2nd one.

  • Why do duplicate albums appear on my iPod Classic screen when there are no duplicates in my iTunes Library?

Why do duplicate albums appear on my i{Pod Classic screen when there are no duplicates in my iTunes Library?

It's probably going to be a capitalisation error. In other words, one or more tracks on the album has a lower case letter at the beginning of the album name while all the others have a capital letter. They can be difficult to spot.
In iTunes, examine one of your duplicated albums carefully. You should be looking for a slight difference between the album title name. Look at the screenshot below, can you see the error in the album title?
    It is there...
The title track (Left Of The Middle). Look at the capitalisation of the album name.
Once you find you error in your album, re-type it (or copy-and-paste from one track to all the tracks) and then SYnc your iPod to iTunes. Does that cure it? If nto, let us know.

  • Multiple copies of album displaying in Ipod

My kids just purchased new 30G 5G ipods. I have them set up using different accounts in Windows XP SP2. They have begun to build their libraries with owned CD's only (nothing from the music store). My daughter's Ipod (after about four sync's -- I have Itunes set to auto sync everything) is showing the same album about 12 times. It is displayed only once in Itunes. Each album on the ipod has the same songs in it -- and all appear to play. I have tried to re-sync, but the ipod does not change. Nothing else appears wrong. I have not been able to find this problem mentioned in this forum or on the Apple support site. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.
    Dell   Windows XP

A spelling or punctuation mistake, or sometimes a trailing space usually causes this after the artists/album and/or song name, which fools the iPod into thinking that there are two different artists/albums or songs. The trailing space is the hardest to spot.
Best way to cure this is to go into iTunes, highlight that artist and/or songs, right click on them and select "get info".
This brings up the multiple song info window. In the artist or song box retype the name, as you would like it, and then click ok. You should do this even if no mistakes are immediately visible.
Re sync this new artist/song info to your iPod.

  • Albums appearing twice on iPod

Hello.. I recently purchased the iPod Touch 32GB. I put my iTunes library onto the new ipod and I noticed that a few of the albums were put on to the ipod twice. I tried to delete them from the ipod and then put them back on but they still appeared twice. I have a lot of B-Side albums from different artists and these B-sides seem to be the albums that appear twice. I checked all of the tags in itunes and they're all fine. Before I got the ipod touch I had an ipod classic and I didn't have this problem with the duplicate albums. If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Morgan

This behaviour can occur wherever an artist also has tracks with one or more guests and you have more than one album by the principal artist. See my post *Yet more menu madness* http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5899476&#5899476
This is a feature of the way the iPod currently (up to & inc. v1.0.3 on Classic & Video) enumerates the artists & albums in the various views, often referencing the artist field when album artist would be more logical. Within one album it seems to cope with listing each combination of artists just once. Give it a new album & it starts over. Likewise keep the album title constant and you can change as many artists/album artists as you like and iPod still sees it as one album... check out *Greatest Hits*, chances are you've more than one album's worth of tracks listed there.

  • After downloading music and dragging into iTunes I end up with multiple copies of the album on my hard drive. I do have the "copy files into iTunes library" checked. When I try to erase one of the copies I end up with red ! in iTunes library.

Please Help!  After downloading an album and dragging it into itunes I end up having multiple copies of the album on my hard drive.  I do have (under Itunes preferences, advanced) copy songs into itunes library "checked".  I'm sure this is the reason for the multiple copies.  When I try to delete one of the copies of the album and go back to itunes and try playing a song, I get a red exclamtion point next to the song with an error message saying itunes cannot locate file. My questions are, Does Itunes literally make a copy of the song? If so , How do you know which file to delete?

Sony's own entertainment software on the Vaio plays merry **** with iTunes, worse there's no telling when it will kick in.
First head over to the Sony Vaio site and get the update for the software, that will stop it from messing with the iTunes database/library files when you connect your iPod.

With that stopped you can add the music back without fear of this happening again.

  • MobileMe Album - Multiple Copies of Images

I created a MobileMe Album and published it in my gallery. I then added pictures to the album by selecting and dragging the photos into the album. The album in Aperture shows multiple images of the same picture. When I select one image, both appear to be selected. When I try to delete one of the copies - both are deleted as is the original. All copies and the original in all albums are gone. When I look at the album in my web gallery - all the photos are there with no duplicates, but they are not in the same order. Anybody have any advice as to what I'm doing wrong? I'm sure my description of my problem is strange, but so is Aperture. Help? Suggestions? thanks

FWIW, this appears to be an Aperture bug that's independent of MobleMe. I have the same problem in normal albums with no connection to MobleMe. If I copy an image from one album to another, multiple copies appear in the destination album and there's no way to prune the copies: removing one copy removes them all.

  • Multiple copies of songs on iPod

I have several playlists in iTunes. Many songs are present in multiple playlists. When I copy the playlists to the iPod I end with multiple copies of the same songs. Is there any way to avoid this? It would seem that it should be smart enough to index a song already present so that only one physical copy would be needed. Is there some setting I'm missing?

Yes, it is the same song in different playlists. I was expecting the iPod to behave like iTunes and the hard-drive. The song is included in multiple playlists in iTunes but it is only stored once on the hard-drive. However, when I copy the playlists from iTunes to the iPod I end up with an actual copy of the song for each playlist it is in. So if I have the same song in three playlists there are three copies of the song on the iPod.

  • What do I do when I have multiple copies of the same album?

My friend lent me her Viva La Vida album, by Coldplay, for me to put onto my iTunes.
The thing is, on her iTunes, the album appears only once, but on her iPod, it appears five times. When I put this CD onto my computer, the exact same thing happened. On iTunes, I only have one copy of Viva La Vida, but on my iPod, I have five. How can I change this so that I only have the one?

    Chris CA wrote:
According to you, ColdPlay (or any artist) needs to only sell one CD and everyone in the world is free to copy it because that single CD was paid for. Not a really good way to make a living, eh?
That is not at all what I said; you are so missing my point. My point is that the one cd that I borrowed isn't going to change Coldplay's entire earnings, that is just a radically exaggerated analogy.
So when you finally get a job, work one day a month for no pay.
Er, **** off. You know nothing about me. I said I was 15, I didn't say I didn't have a job: I do. And if I worked a day for no pay, it's a little different to me not paying the life-changing £3.95. If you think that Coldplay are in desperate need of higher album sales, buy a few of them, listen to them, and calm the **** down.
So it's okay to steal from people with lots of money, simply because they have lots of money?
It's not stealing. Music is meant for everyone, it doesn't all have to have a price.
    No. It is simply theft.
How about the person down the street who doesn't have a computer? According to your thought, it is entirely acceptable for him to to take you computer. After all, he doesn't have enough money to purchase one himself and you/parents do.
    theft

    noun
    1.
the act of stealing; the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods or property of another; larceny.
Theft is a crime that is punishable. I did not steal anything. The cd was no one elses property in the terms that you talk of. I borrowed the cd from my friend and gave it back, so I didn't steal it from her. So who did I steal it from then?

  • Album cover wont appear on my iPod - why?

I can see all the album covers when I'm in iTunes, but they will not appear on my iPod :/ Can someone tell me why?
I have read two previous topics that has similiar problems to mine, but they didn't work out. I tried to remove all pictures I had on it to see whether that could help me get the album covers to appear, that didn't work. I tried to unmark all songs so that my iPod contained no songs and then marked all songs back, but that didn't work either.
I have plenty of songs where I have copied album covers in, but I also have quite the few where the album covers has arrived while I used a CD. They don't show either. I've never used iTunes shop as I don't want to pay for these things, so please don't ask me to make an account there even though I've seen that could work out.
But the thing is also, that I did have all album covers into my iPod for a very long time, before they suddenly dissapeared around two-three weeks ago. I've really tried everything I can so now I've come to you guys for some help and I do hope you can help me and that I have explained my problem with as much details as possible.
Hoping I'll get an answer from you soon,
    -Carrie

Yes, a restore will erase the iPod. It is a bad idea to only have your stuff on the iPod (this issue you are having is a good example why) since if anything happens to the iPod, you lose everything.

  • How to make changes to info in iTunes appear on my iPod Classic

What am I missing? In earlier versions of iTunes I could change the info on an imported CD, for instance, and when synced it would appear on my iPod. For instance, if the database doesn't supply a "composer" for an album I could put one in and then find that album by scrolling through composers on the iPod. Now (with a new 160gig Classic and the latest iTunes) the tags just don't seem to "take", although they continue to appear as changed on my iTunes screen. It seems to be a general problem with revising the tags but I choose this as a simple example. Is there some settings procedure I'm not following on either iTunes or the iPod? Or what?

Such changes should be mirrored to the device if you automatically sync the device. What happens if you make sure the *Sync only checked items* option is enabled, uncheck the tracks, sync, recheck them and sync again? Any better? If not the only other thing I can think of is that iTunes seems not to manage files with multiple tags terribly well. It may be possible to rebuild the tags as follows. Selecting some affected tracks, right/cmd click and use the option Convert id3 tags > None. Repeat once or twice. Once you have confirmed that no tags are present (look in Explorer/Finder) you can replace the tag information using Convert id3 tags > V2.3 (I believe it is recommended to avoid using V2.4). You will have to manually repair artwork if was embedded.

  • Songs from the same album appearing as coming from different albums

I am having trouble grouping multiple songs into one album. In my iTunes, there are songs from the same album that are appearing as from separate albums. For some reason, it is only happening in rare cases. It has randomly split The Roots' album How I Got Over into 3 separate albums, and it has split every Outkast song into individual albums.
And yes, I have already tried the basic steps of selecting all the songs I want to group, and editing their info together. I have done this, and ticked every box in the info fields so they will be identical. Yet they are still appearing as songs coming from separate albums.
Does anyone know what I can do? (I am using the current version of iTunes -- v9.2.0.61)

Actually there is something else, more for the purists though.
Some albums will have "featured" artists and they will be stuck into another part of the tag, but by doing that iTunes thinks it's another artist and treats it as a different album. A good fix that I use is to remove the featured artist and ammend it to the track name. So: "When You're Gone (feat. Mel C)" Is the actual track name instead of "When you're Gone" and the artist being "Mel C" and the album artist being "Bryan Adams". Make sense?
By turning it into a compilation it will change where it appears on your iPod or whatever, basically it will be grouped with all other compilations, not where the artist should be.
