Multiple copies of apps open at the same time

It appears that some documents that have been saved between back-ups are opening from a copy of an app that is saved in Time Machine and not the applications folder.
In some menus, like in the HP scanner setup, it shows five copies of each app in the "scan to" chooser.
A little research reveals that the different apps are are stored in Time Machine backups.
Any ideas or fixes on this one.

Try ejecting your Time Machine disk and launching the misbehaving apps to see if that persuades them to launch from your internal rather than Time Machine. If the apps don't launch it would probably be a good idea to run Disk Utility and Verify your internal disk and Repair Permissions. If the internal has errors you have to repair it from the Leopard installation disk. After you boot from the Leopard DVD and pick a language pick Utilities > Disk. After you repair the disk repair permissions.
Booting from the installer DVD forces Time Machine to do a deep traversal so don't be concerned if the first backup after you reboot takes a good long time in the preparing stage.

If I have 3 apps. open, and try to open a 4th. this message comes up :
The application "Mail" cannot be launched. -10810
Of cause if I'm trying to open up something else than mail, lets say iPhoto, it will say "iPhoto".

I've had this quite a lot too. Do you find that under these conditions you can't load a disk image either?
At first I put this down to Rosetta taking up a lot of resources. I was running OmniWeb with a lot of pages open in the workspaces so I've switched back to Safari until OmniWeb is UB. This morning I read that having Windows file sharing switched on helps to cause this problem. I switched this off, rebooted and ran disk utility to repair disk permissions and I've been running OK since then. I've currently got 13 apps open plus Finder and Widgets. They include 2 bigguns, Eclipse/MyEclipse and Visual Paradigm for UML. It'll probably stop working now I've written that.
I run a MBP 17 with 2GB memory. My guess is that Windows file sharing does cause problems. I just hope Apple has resolved this in 10.4.7... whenever that is.

  • Is it possible to have two (2) apps open at the same time???

How can I have one app open, like FStream listening to a radio station, keep it open and then open a game to play at the same time I am listening??? can this be done some how????
    please let me know.

Sorry to disappoint but the iPod touch as much as the Iphone 3Gs, cannot peform several task at once( something call background proceessing or multitasking). Somehow apple tends to stay a bit behind in things like allowing the iPod touch to do multitasking specially allowing apps to run on the background. Even though other mobile devices like the palm pre, google android, and other phones do that without any difficulty in peforming those tasks. But let's hope that apple fixes these lacking feature in future software updates... Cause it's time apple to allow for the iPod touch to run applications on the background, if they want to stay in top of technology.

  • Am I able to. Have two apps open at the same time? Also how do I play music while online browsing?

Is it possible to use two apps at the same time? For example having Pinterest open and listening to a playlist on YouTube? Or fact checking a "pin" from a site with safari while looking at the actual site?

You can click and drag on a tab to "tear" it out into a new window. Or you can open a new window by pressing Control+N, or by hovering over "New Tab" in the Firefox menu and then choosing "New Window" from the sub-menu that appears.

  • 2 apps open at the same time

Can you open another app while one is running without closing the first?
I thought this was a new feature of 3.0.

No, you cannot open two apps at the same time. You cannot run apps in the background, except for the iPod app.
The closest 3.0 feature to this is the notifications function, which pushes app notifications to your iPhone without the app running.

  • How do I have two apps open at the same time on full screen?

As above - I want to work on word and the internet at the same time. I have resized the screens to half but would like them both to be on full screen. I did manage to do this by accident once (I think) so I'm sure it can be done!!

  • Can I have mail and contacts open at the same time

I really want to be able to have one or more iCloud Apps open at the same time; for example, I may be looking up some info on a contact or in calendar in order to mail someone. At times I have just opened a different tab, but it seems that iCloud then gets messed up.
I am running Windows 7 at work and the latest version fo Chrome.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Bryan

    Hi,
I don't know in Chrome, but in Safari (pc or mac) you can open icloud.com twice on two different tab or windows and open one with contact and the other in Mail without messing up.  What kind of mess to do you experience?
There is no other options to do what you want to do.  You need to click on the little top cloud to switch from one to another.
Beside, I don't understand why even 2 open tab would help more than having to switch via the cloud icon.  I may need to cut/paste some info from contact or calendar from time to time, but switch via the cloud icon is not really painfull.

  • How do I open multiple Firefox home pages? I want all of my different Firefox email accounts open at the same time. I recently upgraded to Win7 and now I have to close and open Firefox to access another email acount!

I want 3 separate, distinct Firefox home pages for each of my 3 email accounts to be open at the same time.

Questions are typically followed by a question mark. My answer answered your question.
Firefox doesn't do email, so there are no "Firefox email accounts". If you are accessing "email" with Firefox, you are using web mail. Some web mail services don't allow for direct access, they want their users to access their email from a "portal" or "main" page and will re-direct any attempt to load an "internal" web site page back to the main page.
As far as loading 3 different web mail accounts at the same time, if they are in the same domain it won't work on Firefox without a Firefox addon. http://br.mozdev.org/multifox/
IOW, if those three email accounts all with Yahoo, without that add-on you would have to logon to each email account separately and log out of the first before logging into the 2nd. Then log out of the 2nd before logging into the 3rd. Firefox isn't capable of having multiple session cookies for simultaneous logon's to the same server. That add-on provides that "multiple sessions cookies" feature.

  • Why does mountain lion "bunch up" all my microsoft office documents that I have open when I hit f3? When I had snow leopard for example, if i had 4 or 5 different microsoft office documents open at the same time I could hit f3 and easily pick one of them

Why does mountain lion "bunch up" all my microsoft office documents that I have open when I hit f3? When I had snow leopard for example, if i had 4 or 5 different microsoft office documents open at the same time I could hit f3 and easily pick one of them.
Notice how in the photo, I can't identify which MS office document I would like to switch too. Perhaps since the Dashboard and Desktop windows are at the top of my screen now Apple doesn't let you have all the applications take up the full screen and be sized individually so that you can have a better idea on what to pick.
I like the idea of grouping to an extent... If you have a bunch of random things it was hard for me to decifer between what was safari, chrome, or word. But now that they grouped them like this, if you have multiple pages of one program running, you can't switch between those pages easily like before.

If I wanted to open any of my Applework documents I had to open them one at a time and resave them with pages. This could take weeks.I have 1000s of apple work documents.
You don't have to open and re-save every AppleWorks document you have right now. Just wait till you need one, then do it. The documents aren't going anywhere.
Am I dealing with Microsoft? This was a BIG surprise to me that Apple would release an OS without testing all programs.
Frankly, it is not Apple's responsibility to ensure compatibiltiy with every piece of software available for OS X. That is the responsibility of the software vendor. Lion has been available to developers for several months before it's release, so Microtek had plenty of time to update their software. Yet they did not. How is that Apple's fault? I think Apple was very generous to give you a refund for Lion.
I'm not trying to belittle your frustration but I do think your ire is misplaced.

  • Why do 3 instances of Firefox open at the same time?

Every time I start up Firefox, 3 different instances of Firefox will open at the same time. Do I need to uninstall it and start over? I don't know why this is happening. When I open IE8 only one page opens; but when I open Firefox 3 tabs open at the same time.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).

  • I want to have 2 windows open at the same time using Windows7

Using any application, I want to have 2 windows open at the same time - 1 excel sheet & 1 Word document, or 2 diff pages from Blackboard, or email & Blackboard. How do I do this. Multiple tabs show, but only one will display

Are you saying that you can't open a new window using {Ctrl + N} or with File > New Window?
If so, something added to Firefox is blocking the opening of new windows, and you need to do a little troubleshooting to discover what is causing that fault.
Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

You can have multiple books open in IBooks. To switch between them requires returning to the Library (touch Library ) and then touching the other book you wish to access. iBooks will remember where you were in each book. You can also set multiple bookmarks with each book. iBooks also contains a built-in dictionary facility to lookup words.
Alt + Tab on Windows is a way of switching between simultaneously running applications. If you want a bit more information you should explain in a bit more detail exactly what you are trying to do. Applications on the iPad can remember what they were last doing so even if they are not simultaneously running it is sometimes possible to go between them fairly easily.
As has been said iOS 4.2 due in November will permit more seamless running of multiple apps
