Multiple copies of mail on laptops

I have 3 computers, one desktop iMac, macbook pro and macbook. On my laptops mail is downloading duplicated emails but it is not doing it on my desktop. anybody know what the problem is here?

I had this exact same problem on a laptop after installing 10.6....
Turns out my mail account (IMAP) was duplicated in Mail > Preferences > Accounts. I assumed it was a screw up with MobileMe syncing.. but it only showed up on my laptop (I also installed 10.6 on a desktop which is also synced with MobileMe and mail on the desktop was NOT duplicated)...
a longshot (don't know if it was 10.6 or MobileMe)... but check to see if your account is in the Accounts list twice.

  • Using gmail - multiple copies of mail being written are forwarded to the trash -did not have this issue with 10.6.8 -

I have two Imacs - the master one is plugged in directly into the modem, it runs with 10.6.8 and works fine (this computer is not connected to Icloud)- the other  is connected to a router which is connected to the master unit and the modem. that unit was upgraded to 10.9.4 and it is connected to Icloud - both Imacs use gmail accounts for e-mail.
The "slave" unit running on 10.9.4 creates multiple copies of mail being written and sends those copies to the trash file. We have had up to fifty copies of one e-mail in the trash. That computer worked fine under OSX10.6.8 - We have visited the apple store genius bar with this Imac, and consulted the apple phone support service to no avail.
while it does take a long time to transmit the e-mails, addressees get only one copy. Your help will be appreciated.

9/16/14 update - another call to apple phone support revealed that this is a known issue that has no solution at this time.

  • Multiple copies of mailing list groups in Groupwise

We are running GroupWise 7.0.3 HP 4 client. We have a user who had 4 copies of her mailing list groups in Groupwise. We had her clean up address books, deleteing all but the last entry worked for cleaning. However, when she tries to copy that address bokk out so she can organize better, it makes two copies again.

How is she trying to "copy" that address book? And where exactly is it
    making two copies?

  • How do I delete multiple copies of songs on my iPhone when my laptop's iTunes only has one copy of each?

    Hi, everyone.
I've seen many versions of this question, but mine has some key differences.
The problem is that my iPhone 4S has multiple copies of almost every song that I've selected to copy from iTunes. The easy answer is to delete all the music from the phone and then re-sync from the iTunes library, except that I don't sync, I manually manage, because I have a 9000 song iTunes library. According to iTunes on my laptop, I have 835 songs on my phone, but there are actually over 2000 on the phone due to the duplicates. The fact that the duplicates do not show up in the iTunes library means I also cannot use the "Show Duplicate Items" tool.
I'm thinking that the only two solutions are:
    1. Manually slide and delete all 1200+ dupes on the phone
    2. Delete all music from the phone and then go back through the library and cherry pick what I want on the phone. This seems okay, but I don't know why this happened, so I'm afraid it will happen again.
I'd be thankful for any advice!

The cause was probably a USB glitch during a sync or when copying. The music resides on the phone in separate files. A master file contains a database with an index to the music, an entry for each track and a "pointer" to the file containing the track. Somehow the index got corrupted with duplicate entries. It's likely that the music itself wasn't duplicated, but some tracks had more than one entry in the database. I've seen this happen when syncing (rather than manually managing) also. In my case deleting the track from the Music tab in iTunes, syncing, then adding it back fixed it.
A related problem I've seen is an album may be split, with some tracks in each of 2 or more album entries in the listing. Fixed the same way.

  • Mail 3.6 downloads multiple copies of emails from my pop account

Since I auto-upgraded to Mail 3.6, Mail is downloading multiple copies of email from my pop mail account. This did not happen before and I haven't changed any of the mail settings. I have read discussions about a similar problem with an earlier version of Mail and the solution seemed to be deleting some file linked to Mail so it could be rebuilt, but I can't find such a file on my system that I could try deleting.
It may matter that I am not 'strictly' supposed to be using os x 10.5.8 on my powerbook G4 (according to what is said on the packet).
    Help please!

    @ Tokyodj
Thanks very much for posting this. I was having slightly different issues than the people above - only one of my two POP accounts was being constantly picked up, and I had hundreds of versions of each email... strangely, even after I went to the (Yahoo) account and deleted all the emails out of there. Your solution worked perfectly.
    Thanks again!

  • Why does mail program show multiple copies of a message, in various stages of completion in the trash folder ?

I am using an iMac with OS 10.9.4, Mail 7.3. My mail trash file contains multiple copies of partially complete messages I've sent. This problem seemed to begin when I began using "Maverick".

I have this exact same problem.
32 copies of one email. 3 o4 copies of others…
Rebuilding the trash makes no difference at all.
Any other suggestions? I have rebuilt my other mailboxes as well.

  • Multiple copies of email appearing in Apple Mail

Suddenly I am starting to see multiple copies of an email in me Apple mail client.
This seems to have started when I did the software upgrade earlier today - although I have no idea if this is a coincidence, or part of the problem.
fyi I am using Apple mail with a Google App mail account. This has worked perfectly for a number of years until today. When I look in my gmail account using the web client there is only one copy of the email.
    Any ideas?

In general iTunes is slightly more liberal when it comes to spelling than the iPod. As the iPod enumerates the tracks it will see each different spelling as a new artist so it may list one album multiple times. The iPod also takes no account of the Album Artist field so tracks with guest artists may also be viewed as separate albums. Disk No. & No. of disks may also affect the order in which tracks are enumerated or grouped. For a given album the following terms should all have exactly the same values. Album Title, Artist (except for Compilations), No. of Tracks, No. of Discs. & Part of a Compilation. The Sort Artist & Sort Album fields take precedence over Artist & Album and, if used, should either have the same values for all tracks, or match with the existing values for Artist & Album on other tracks.
Normally selecting all the tracks from the album and overtyping the Album, Artist & Album Artist info. is enough to fix this issue, although once I had some weird extended character that refused to be replaced in certain tracks. In this case the answer was simply to add some random info. into each field, e.g. add X onto each value, apply the changes, then remove the excess text & reapply.

opps.  Long title there... The past few days my Mail app has started downloading multiple copies of e-mails from all pop servers.  This is only happening on my Macbook not other macs.  Deleting mail from server does not help. I ran ClamXav found 2 viruses deleted those.  Checked for software update and installed suggested downloads.  Problem still contintues.  Any suggestions?

    Folks,
even after having repaired the inbox folder under "properties" a few times, I still had some e-mails where the contents are different from the subject line.
In other words in the inbox there are two e-mails: one with subject line "abc", and another one with subject line "def".
When I display the e-mail with the subject line "abc", the contents are from the e-mail with the subject line "def" in the in-basket.
What else can be done to correct this problem?
    Thanks and best regards.

  • Apple mail multiple copies in trash

With Apple Mail on my macbook pro I have multiple copies of a deleted mail appearing in the trash. This just started. How can I stop this?

I have had this problem as well for some time now, only this happens on my iMac running Maverick.  If I delete an email, 10 copies show up in the trash.  Does anyone in the community know what is going on?

  • Mail is putting multiple copies of sent emails in my drafts folder, or in trash.

Mail is putting copies of emails successfully sent in my drafts folder, sometimes multiple copies, sometimes in trash.
Also, new email keeps entering my inbox after I've moved it to other mailboxes or to the trash or junk mail. Also, if I search for a name to which I have sent or from which I have received an email, the results shows a copy of each mail in all these mailboxes: Important, All Mail, Sent Mail, Sent G-Mail. This is a recent phenomenon. For every sent email I get 5 copies in my trash box.

I phoned up Appe Support yesterday and i discovered that SOME (not all) of my trouble was caused by my 2 Gmail accounts, which werent correctly designated as Gmail Server WITH the correct password, it was set to use the server from one of my other accounts.
I do still have another problem which doesnt go away, i open Mail normally and there is ghost Open Window, which cannot be opened, to view my Mail i have to open a NEW viewer window, even though there is a Window open all ready, the Ghost window !

  • Searching mail shows multiple copies of the same email

I use gmail through Mail, and I noticed there are multiple copies of the same e-mail (on further inspection, it looks like the copies are at different stages/edits) show up in my Trash folder. Is there any way to stop this?

The same thing just happened in my Blackberry gmail folder... I sent an email from my computer and 20 copies showed up on my phone.

    Here is the setup:

    Mail 2.1.1
seperate user accounts, each with their own email address
email is valornet.com (local ISP), set up to download to Mail
Multiple problems with one of the user accounts (not affecting the others):
    1. Multiple copies in the inbox of the same message. These are brand new, not a week old as some other threads have mentioned. When I go to Preferences/Accounts/Advanced I have already clicked the "Remove Now" button, also the "Remove copy from server..." is checked.
    2. Mail will not stop retrieving new mail. The circle thing next to the Inbox on the left just keeps spinning, and spinning, and spinning...
    3. Cannot quit Mail. Have to go in Activity Monitor and Force Quit.
    4. My trash folder is gone.
If anyone can help me clean up this mess, I would appreciate it.

  • HP Laserjet 1022nw printing multiple copies

HELP!  Ever since I purchased my new laptop with Windows 7, my LaserJet has been going crazy.  I reinstalled new drivers and used the HP diagnostic tool and it says "all is working correctly".  However, when I print a document of any size (even if just one page), the printer keeps re-printing multiple copies until the paper runs out or I turn the printer off.  I have un-installed and reinstalled several times and the same issue keeps happening.  I posted on the forum and one other person related that he had the same issue, but to this date neither of us have been able to correct it.  I love my laser jet when it works, but have resorted to using my hp photosmart 7960 instead (higher cost of ink!).  And this sucks because sometimes I have 50-100 page documents that I need to print.  Laser is so much faster.  Thanks in advance for the expert advice I know you are going to give me and the solution that I KNOW that you must have.

  • Any way to turn OFF that stupid saving of multiple copies of documents?!

I would love to know who thought it was a good idea to add this WITHOUT a way to turn it off!! So when you're in a text document (or any other kind of file that you can make changes in) you can go into the Time Machine icon on the status bar, select "Enter Time Machine" and there will be multiple versions of your document from various states auto saved so that you can go back to a previous version of your document for whatever reason. This can be a great thing, EXCEPT when you have no choice in that matter!
I DO NOT NEED a hundred copies of every single document I have on my computer because I happened to do a lot of tweeking to minor lines of text or make numerous very minor changes. And before anyone asks (because I am SO sick of answering this question twenty times a day) I DO NOT have a time machine hard drive OR Time Capsule connected to my computer in any way at all, (under normal usage. I do have a Time Machine hard drive I manually connect every few days to back up my computer, I just don't ALWAYS have it connected because it's a laptop) these multiple copies are being saved into my computer and taking up valuable hard drive space and there's no way to shut off this feature. I just called into Apple and the only thing they said was "Well it doesn't take up very much hard drive space" completely failing to see the point that I don't want it to take up ANY space because, again, I DON'T NEED A HUNDRED COPIES OF EVERY DOCUMENT IN MY COMPUTER!!!
Does anyone have any idea how to shut off this "feature" because it is utterly stupid. in System Settings -> General I checked "Ask to keep changes when closing documents" and I selected "None" in the "Show Recent Items for Documents, Apps and Servers" but it still saves multiple copies of my documents. Can anyone  help me figure out how to shut this off and delete the multiple copies? Not all of us are hysterical computer users opening up random documents and slapping the keyboard with our open palms requiring the ability to go back to multiple pages of the same document, some of us actually KNOW how to open up something, make a change and save it. We don't need the computer to constantly save multiple copies of everything we do so there needs to be SOME way to shut this off. What about my final cut, Aperture, Motion and any other program that make files? Am I going to have a thousand copies of every single video I ever edit from this point on? (cause anyone who does video editing knows there will be MANY tweeks and changes to those) What about Pages, Numbers or Keynote? How much room on my hard drive is going to be wasted storing hundreds of copies of hundreds of documents every time I wanted to change a graph colour slightly, or add tax into a spreadsheet, or change a decimal point in a presentation? Adding this without a way to shut it off was the most ridiculous thing I've seen! Thanks to anyone that can help.

Actually, there are two mechanisms by which Mountain Lion does this, both of which are on by default (for laptops; only one of which is on by default for desktops).
You mention going into the Time Machine icon in the menubar? Good news - that one's easy to turn off.
To do so, you need to open Terminal.app (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and copy/paste this line into the Terminal window:
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
press 'return' on your keyboard and enter your Admin password. Note that the password does not echo to the screen, so type carefully.
The second mechanism is what Apple call 'Versions'. The bad news is you can't turn Versions off; the good news is it's only enabled on certain Apple apps like Preview, TextEdit, XCode, Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc. The only way to avoid Versions, therefore, is to use alternatives such as Skim (for Preview), Tincta (for TextEdit) and LibreOffice for Pages, Numbers, Keynote (alas, I don't know of an alternative for XCode).
