Multiple copies of same files in my hard drive
hello:
Somehow I have managed to fill up my hard drive with multiple copies of
the same files. So, these copies are filling up drive space.
Does anyone know of a software that can point out the copies? Something that will make it easier for me to determine that I have copies of the same file and so I can delete the copies.

I have tried Spotlight already.
But it's not a good solution.
First of all, I don't even know which files i have multiple copies of.
And even though I may have files and folders with the same name, I don't know if the contents are identical ....etc.
It's just a mess.

Please Help! After downloading an album and dragging it into itunes I end up having multiple copies of the album on my hard drive. I do have (under Itunes preferences, advanced) copy songs into itunes library "checked". I'm sure this is the reason for the multiple copies. When I try to delete one of the copies of the album and go back to itunes and try playing a song, I get a red exclamtion point next to the song with an error message saying itunes cannot locate file. My questions are, Does Itunes literally make a copy of the song? If so , How do you know which file to delete?
Sony's own entertainment software on the Vaio plays merry **** with iTunes, worse there's no telling when it will kick in.
First head over to the Sony Vaio site and get the update for the software, that will stop it from messing with the iTunes database/library files when you connect your iPod.

Multiple copies of one Application on different hard drives?

Ok - I have 2x Hard drives in my G5 (2 physical HD's, not 2 partitions of the same HD). On one HD I have 10.5 Leopard and on the other I have 10.4 Tiger.
My question is this: I have Adobe CS3 installed on my Tiger HD. But when I'm in Leopard, the applications won't start when I try to open them on the Tiger HD. So it looks like I need to install new copies on the Leopard drive right? Would this be ok? To have the CS3 suite twice on the same computer (albeit 2 seperate HDs)?. WOuld you recommend I uninstall them on the Tiger drive first? I'm hoping I wouldnt have to cos it's always a little bit of a pain to uninstall Adobe stuff with all the components etc.
Anybody else have a similar set up? Thanks for any advice!It's probably all those components that are causing problems. Some applications have everything in one spot and you're fine. Others (like Adobe) put things everywhere and if they aren't exactly where Adobe expects them to be then the application doesn't work. You should, however, be fine with making a second installation of the application.

Multiple Libraries with same artists on external hard drive
I have saved about 5 seperate iTunes libraries and have now gotten them all on the same external hard drive. I have aprox 19000 tracks at about 168gb. The libraries r kind of a mess and I'm wondering if there's a shortcut to organizing files. Otherwise this is gonna take forever.
You need to turn on Sharing for the external drive - Select the external drive. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the Shared box. If the drive is connected to your computer then turn on File Sharing in your Sharing preferences and list your wife's username for access.
You might also wish to read iTunes- Setting up Home Sharing on your computer as well as just sharing the library using the iTunes' Sharing preferences.

Multiple copies of same emails
Hey,
My problem started few days ago, I received multiple copies of same emails (about 5 copies/email). Now I tried to delete those copies using the plugin (Remove multiple messages) but it doesn't seem to delete. Still shows same amount of emails (about 35000), about 28000 needs to be deleted, in my inbox folder.
So when I try to get new emails, it says hard-drive is full etc... it isn't full. Webmail works great, but only have the latest 7days emails.
I'm using POP. please help to fix this fast.Were you able to resolve this problem? I have the same issue, but on a macbook pro.

How to create multiple copies of a file with renamed filenames

I want to create multiple copes of a file [ say abc.docx] which has 3.5 MB of size and want to rename it through power shell.
so, in the end, i want to get abc_1.docx,abc_2.docx, abc_3.docx ....abc_10.docx in the same folder with the same size. i mean, after running the ps script i should get the foldwer size set to 35 MB .
can anyone help, how to achieve this?

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB. lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive? I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents" I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

Photos does the same thing.... Only workaround I can come up with is to create a template in Pages and copy & paste.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you try to copy data to the external drive, what happens? If you don't see any error, the external drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write in it.
To be able to write on this external drive, you have to use an app like Paragon NTFS. Another solution would be to format the external drive in FAT32 or exFAT with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make sure you copied all the files of the external disk to the internal disk before doing it -
Using camera accessory, I have imported photos to my iPad 3rd generation. By mistake I have imported multiple copies of same photos. Now if I want to delete additional copies I can't. It gives me only one option "Delete everywhere" instead of delete one by one, so that I can keep one copy of that photo.

I'm trying to put movies onto my hard drive but i can't put the files with the same name onto the hard drive , finder won't let me change the name. What am i doing wrong?
Make a new folder and put them in that different folder. Then the names can be the same as others already on your drive.

HT4889 Transfer files from a hard drive to a new mac?
Currently, I have a 2012 Macbook pro. I love it, but its kinda slow for me. When I bought my Mac, I didn't realize how much I would use it, so I bought the cheapest 15 inch in from 2012 (2.3GHz 4GB RAM 500GB HD) Now, I'm upgrading to a 15inch Retina Macbook Pro with 2.0 GHz 8GB RAM and a 512Gb HD. A local electronics store said that they will buy my mac for $950 from me, and I said yes. Then, I hooked up a 1TB Hard Drive and let time machine work it's magic.
When I go to buy my new mac, what will I need to do to transfer all of the files from the hard drive?
Also, I have over 150 movies in iTunes that are ripped dvds and 2000 songs from CDs, and I added info and artwork for all of them. Will they all still be formatted with artwork and info when I import them into iTunes on a new mac?
Lastly, will I see a huge power boost in the retina Macbook pro with 8gb RAM and a 2.0GHz processor? or should I save up some more money for the 16GB RAM and 2.3GHz Processor? I'm going to college in a year, so I do tons of email/safari-ing, word processing, itunes playing, and downloading, usually at the same time. A usual day for me consists of writing a document in pages or microsoft word, while listning to music from iTunes, with safari open with multiple tabs, and something downloading to my mac. Thank you for the help, it's tremendously appriciated.When you first start up the new Mac you will be asked to enter personal information, etc. At some point you will be asked if you want to transfer files from another source, including Time Machine back up. Make sure your back is connected, and just follow the directions on the screen.
All formatting etc. will be intact, since TM makes sure it is.
As for perfomance, the biggest performance boost would be a solid state drive. Have you looked at that option?

From your post I understand you're wanting to move iMovie project and event data to another drive. I found the following information in the iMovie help that answers your question.
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or storage devices
Connect a storage device that contains the target library to your Mac, or copy the target library to your Mac.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu.You can choose from recently opened libraries, locate an existing library on your Mac, or create a new library.The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Tip: To select multiple clips or projects in the same library, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.

Help reading a .txt file from the hard drive....

Ok... I need to know how to read a .txt file from the hard drive... I have an example on how to read from a disk, but I don't have a disk drive. I could be confusing terminology, but I don't think I am. Here is the code I have for reading from a disk.. please let me know how I should change it to read from a hard drive.
Also, when the error pops up, it says that it can't read another .txt file that is not specified in the code... any ideas how that is occuring? Please advise.

advise.Probably becuase the class file (compiled version of the source code) is a different version to the source code, i.e. the source code hasn't been recompiled since the source code was changed.

Hi there, my old mac book recently died and I opted to buy a new macbook pro, instead of pouring lots of money into the old computer. I was able to get my hard drive out, and I bought a 2.5" Sata Nootbook Drive Upgrade Kit. I have also installed superduper!....but I can't really figure out how to get everything to work. I just want to be able to take some of my files from my hard drive, not everything...
Any suggestions?
Thanks!I don't know what a "2.5" Sata Nootbook Drive Upgrade Kit" is but if you have a internal drive you need to connect all you needed was a $20 IDE/SATA to USB adapter
You don't need Superduper, that's software designed to clone a entire Mac's boot drive to a external drive for bootable backup purposes using the same machine/make/model.
Since the new Mac is different than the old one you can't clone (well you could but it will break the machine) the old drive to the new one.
However you can use the adapter above and software Apple provides in the Utilities folder on the NEW MAC, called Migration Assistant to transfer your User to the new machine.
However this might not be the best course of action as it can transfer unwanted data and cause problems in the Library, old programs that won't run on 10.7, etc.
You can simply create the same named user on the machine (System Preferences > Accounts) log into it and then connect the external drive with the adapter and copy the contents of your users folders over and place into the same.
It's always good to have another Admin level user account on the machine in case the primary one has a User based issue and you need to log into the other and grab files. So if either manually or via using Migration Assistant you wind up with two user accounts on the machine, it's really not that big of a deal.
