Multiple Crashes

Many of my applications crashes when I attempt to use the font "Helvetica 35 Thin" on applications like Fireworks and FreeHand. The font shows up normally on Font book and has been validated with no error nor problems.
I've checked the console log and found these:-
Apr 8 11:16:51 Ty /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framewo rk/Support/ATSServer: FOExceptionMainHandler caught a fatal exception at 0x000ddb9f\n
Apr 8 11:16:51 Ty /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framewo rk/Support/ATSServer: ATSServer got a fatal exception! Please check /var/log/ats.log, also viewable in Console.app
This is just a small selection of the entire log.
Applications that crashed include Finder, Dashboard and many others. It even crashes the Crash Reporter. Finder and dock tries to retart itself several times and system becomes unstable.
I could only struggle to hit the restart button to get it back into shape.
I have since disabled the typeface Helvetica 35 Thin and my other versions of Helvetica seems to be working normally. Could it be infected with a virus?
Please advise.

It's very unlikely a virus, we don't know there are any viruses for Mac yet. It does sound like corrupted font file. Does your system returns to normal after you disable the font?

  • MULTIPLE crashes on G5 IMacs

I work at a veterinary hospital with 5 IMac G5's, a mac mini, and a G5Tower. We have had multiple crashes with all 5 of our IMacs. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the crashes. Generally speaking, they occur after we shut them down. Upon restart, they show various error icons - spinning wheels under the apple icon with the fan running at top speed or the flashing folder/?.
I have tried the disk utility to try to recover them. Only about once or twice have I been able to repair the drive. Sometimes the hard disk isn't even there to try and repair.
I used to take the IMacs to the Apple Store, but all they did was erase the hard drive and reinstall OS, so I started doing that on my own. The frustrating part is that this happens about every 2 weeks.
We are running OS 10.3.9, MS Office for Macs, Osirix and DVMax. I know many places that run Osirix and DVMax with no problems, so I don't feel this is a software issue. We keep our computers on 24/7 since they are on a network. The mac mini and the G5 tower have never had any such problems.
Will repairing the permissions or the disk with disk utility on a regular basis help this? Does anyone have any other suggestions? I have never, ever seen this happen with computers before.

    Judith,
When my iMac began slowing down, and sometimes acting just plain strangely, found that running any of the following utilities kept it in great shape (in particular, I was having the utilities run the Unix maintenance scripts. These scripts try to run automatically between 3:30 and 5:30 am. If your computer is asleep, or off, they won't run):
    Yasu: http://www.jimmitchelldesigns.com/software.html
    Onyx: http://www.titanium.free.fr/
    Macaroni (automates the process): http://www.atomicbird.com/
Macaroni is about $8, and the one I primarily use because of it's automation.
Are you running any anti-virus software, such as Norton? It has been known to cause problems.
Do you have USB devices connected to your computers (such as a USB Hub)? If so, try disconnecting the devices, power them down, power them up, reconnect them, and see how the computers run... I've noticed that after power surges or power failures, my USB devices cause more problems to my computer than anything else.
Check the application "Font Book" Do you have duplicate fonts indicated? (the bulleted ones). If so, highlight them, and Edit>Resolve Duplicates. (Duplicate fonts caused problems with restarts and logout/login for me).
    Hope this helps a little.

  • Multiple crashes and computer restarts required?

During the past week, I've experienced multiple crashes on my Macbook Pro  (Spring 2011 model). Upon opening programs (Mail, Safari, iPhoto - not necessarily at the same time or session), the program suddenly closes - either before its even opened or during it use. I've also received messages that my computer needs to be restarted - again, either at the initial powering on stage (right after entering my login password) or while i'm in the middle of a program an hour later? All these scenarios have occurred multiple times during the past week?? And seems to have coincided with a recent automatic Apple system software update so i'm suspicious that that may be the cause??
Any thoughts on the cause or solution? I bought my computer new in Jan 2012 but the 90 day tech support has expired. Without AppleCare, will the Apple store (or Best Buy where i bought it) help me fix this at no charge?
    Help!! Thanks in advance!

Your warranty is for one year, so Best Buy should repair it under the warranty assuming there is something that needs repairing.
You may have a software incompatibility problem at work. You have been experiencing kernel panics so a first start would be to look at a panic log to see what it tells us. We can try diagnosing everything until the problem is tracked down or you can go the extreme route which is to backup your data, erase the drive, and reinstall OS X.
For the former visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Also seeOS X- How to log a kernel panic. Then post the panic log here so we can see what it tells us.
I would also suggest you try booting into Safe Mode and see if your computer's problems cease. If they don't then create a new user account. Log out of your account and log into the new account. Do the problems cease?

    Hi there Rlong50,
You may want to try force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Anyone experiencing multiple crashes since installing yosemite? I use logic 9 software most of the time for recording.

Hi, Im experiencing multiple crashes on my macbook pro. I have recently (past 2 weeks) installed yosemite. Could this have something to do with it?
I use logic pro 9 all day every day but am finding it very difficult to record with a constantly unstable mac! It just cuts out and restarts itself.
    Any ideas?
    Mike.

Mike, I would say Yosemite has -everything- to do with it. Logic 9 has several known problems with Yosemite.
You should not upgrade the OS without first checking boards like this one, the only solution for Logic 9 users is to roll back the operating system to whatever you were using that was stable. (Logic-X isn't so great in Yosemite either).
Because stability is important to me I'm using Snow Leopard and Logic 9,1,5, and my upgrade to Logic 9.1,5 was only a few month ago.

  • FCP X Update 10.0.8 results in Multiple Crashes

    HW=iMac 24inch Early2009, 8GB RAM; OSX 10.7.5
Made the mistake of updating FCP X to latest version 10.0.8, was having NO issues with previous build, was actually becoming happy with its stability given its shaky start a while back... Now, I can't even do something as simple as add text overlay to a video clip without crashing... Unbelievable!! I'm going to have to fall back to my old fateful Final Cut Express to just get this one job done quickly... Nice Job apple, now I have to trouble shoot your SW again... Sorry community, just had to vent...
Anybody seeing the same issue... Seriously, I have a 4 min clip I'm just trying to add text to, and I've already had 3 crashes in the app in a span of 15 mins... Only thing that has changed is I updated to latest build of FCP X
    Very VERY frustrating

Thanks Russ H, I do seem recalling I did that previously with one of the earlier builds, way back when crashes were much more common in FCP X... For the life of me I can't remember the SW I used last time to reset the preferences to defaults.. I have done that again with the suggested SW... Honestly, I needed to get the video done ASAP, so I haven't done much follow up... But following the preference reset, I WAS able to at least hastily added two text overlays without FCP crashing immediately, which is what I was facing even after doing several SW and System Reboots following the update to 10.0.8... Apple has received multiple Crash reports from me today for this issue <smiling> Hopefully it's just me, and not a bunch of others,
I'll continue to trouble shoot On Monday... Pardon my previous rant... It is just so very discouraging when the previous evening everything is working well, and you simply apply an update, and your SW begins to act up...

  • Console logging multiple crashes with name "systemstatsd" (Mavericks)

Ever since installing mavericks on my macbook pro ( mid 2009 ) , system keeps freezing every few minutes ( every 2 minutes ). It stays frozen for about 2 minutes. Doesn't matter what Application I am using ... its the same ( hang after a few minutes ).
I looked at Console app ( it itself has shows as not responding on Activity Monitor when I try to look at the crash reports ). Its been logging multiple crash reports under the name " systemstatsd " .... I have over 50 crash reports by now.
Here is a copy of what is inside those crash reports:
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zZOHt88SYCtAnxZSn9QLbb9y9Q0OMPU-yI1D1Q4QkAU/ edit?usp=sharing
    Here is EtreCheck Output:
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JwCcLgh4vvun3NjWjh1iXOfNbjL9kJicdjrMLtzjbGs/ edit?usp=sharing
    Few more things I tried:
Verify disk (Macintosh HD) --- it failed
Repair disk --  I repaired it after verify disk failed
Problem is still there repairing disk didn't do anything
    Please help

Same problem with constant systemstatsd crashes - every 4 mins or so.
Computer is freezing for only a second or two each time.
Clean install of Mavericks 10.9.1 on a mac mini server Macmini4,1
Verify / repair disk revealed no problems.

  • On iOS7.0.3 html select tag with attribute 'multiple' crashes Safari

Try loading an HTML page on Safari that has:
<div>Multi-Select Picklist- tap on this to crash the iOS app
    <select id="12121" title="Available" multiple="multiple" size="3" style="width: 120px;">
    <optgroup label="Available">
    <option value="1">AAAAAA</option>
    <option value="2">BBBBBB</option>
    <option value="3">CCCCCC</option>
    <option value="4">DDDDDD</option>
    </optgroup>
    </select>
    </div>
Safari will crash once you tap on the picklist. If I remove the attribute 'multiple' or if you have set it as multiple="multiple" it will work, but then it will offcourse not allow multiple selection. At least need to know a workaround.

You might be better of asking this in the Developer forum. They might know more information about that, or at least in the Safari forum. I'll ask the moderators to move this for you.

  • Multiple crashes, blue screen, reboots after upgrading to ios 7.1

    Hi All.
My iphone 5s 32gb worked perfectly fine until  upgraded to ios 7.1.
Now it keeps crashing, rebooting multiple times a day. Sometimes it enters in a rebooting loop.
I´ve tried reseting, restoring, downloading the upgrade and restoring again and again but the problem persists. Very frustrating.
I´ve enter to diagnostics and usage data on mi iphone and there are at leat 100 crash reports.
What should I? Whait for ios 8? Forget Apple products for good?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your advice! I don´t live in the US. I can see there are a lot of people having the same issue after upgrading to ios 7.1. Is it possible that my iphone just got broken? I repeat that after the upgrade it worked perfectly fine.
    Kind regards.

    Hello,
Is the ThinkPad still on Windows XP RTM level?  If so, try installing Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Windows XP and then re-running the ThinkVantage System Update Utility.  There might be some dependencies in those faulting modules which require functionality in the XP SP3 level Windows kernel.

  • Multiple crashes daily of mozilla firefox with windows operating system. Crash reports sent but no change.

for the past 4 weeks, firefox crashes daily multiple times. I already have it set to send the crash report to mozilla but no change/help from firefox. why the constant crashing?

    Hi bostongio9
Your crashes all have a different crash signature.
You can try a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 18.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Maybe also do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

  • Why do I see multiple crash reports from the day I approved one?

A few days ago, Firefox crashed on me. Subsequently, Crash reporter came up and I submitted a crash report. I only saw one crash, and only saw Crash reporter once. As such, I only approved sending a crash report once. However, when viewing "about:crashes" I see four crash reports as having been sent that day, all within an hour and a half of the original crash report.
What's going on here? Was there a recording error? Did Firefox continue to send reports after I approved one? Are these indicative are multiple causes for a crash?

    You said,
... when viewing "about:crashes" I see four crash reports as having been sent that day, all within an hour and a half of the original crash report.
    and,
... (it looks like it was caused by one of Adobe's famous flash bugs.) The thing that confuses me is that the one I approved was sent at 11:58pm, then another apparently was sent several minutes later, then another after a pause, and a final one at 1:17am. I only approved the first one, so I can't understand why the other 3 were sent in (and Firefox only crashed once)
It might help if you could list the four Crash IDs ( bp- ) in question from the '''about:crashes''' Submitted Crash Reports page.
