Multiple Database Issues

I have now experienced 5 issues in a row with HP Support because apparently HP utilizes multiple databases to track customer sales vs. support accounts. EVERY TIME I have has to send in my laptop to get fixed (that's getting old too), HP has sent the shipping material to the wrong address which I have not lived at for over nine months now! ... THIS IS INEXCUSABLE!!!
Each time this has happened I was assured it would not happen again ... "That all my information has been updated" ... well apparently NOT!!!
Somewhere in HP's system they still have my OLD ORIGINAL ADDRESS that is NOT being updated properly and is then utilized as my current address despite giving the support team my NEW address every time.  Even my email updates are still being sent to my old email address (which I fortunately still have access too).
HP - YOU GUYS NEED TO GET THIS SYSTEM WORKED OUT BECAUSE IT IS NOT WORKING AND YOUR MAKING AN ALREADY BAD SITUATION OF NEEDING SUPPORT AND TURNING IT IN TO AN EVEN WORSE SITUATION!!!

In general you aren't going to be able to use an Access database online. In order to get that to work you'd have to modify your IIS settings to allow access to Access databases (refer to TechNet on how to do this).  By default it won't serve up such
files.  Assuming you did do that then nothing would prevent somebody from trashing your DB since everyone would have access to it.  Additionally Access is not really designed for multiple users to work with it at the same time.  Yes it does
"technically" support multiple users if properly configured but you're going to run into all sorts of issues.
Even after all that you're going to run into the issues with linked servers and whatnot because Access is assuming you're running things locally.  Hence any resources it uses will assume to come from the same location.  Assuming it even builds
the URL correctly IIS is still going to fail to deliver the file (unless it is HTML or similar).  So you'd have to add all the additional file types to IIS before it would server them up.
Personally your network admin should be throwing a fit by now about security.  This is the wrong approach to solving your problem IMO.  Without understanding your problem it is hard to provide suggestions but I would at least consider using FTP
over HTTP.  At least with an FTP server you can access files without having to configure things and you can add security. Access is still probably not going to behave well but it would be a start.  Alternatively UNC paths would work a lot better
if you're on the same network.
If none of that works then creating a web service on the hosted network that interacts with the database and that your code can call would be a step up.

  • Multiple database users, ORM, entity framework, best practices

    Hello everyone!
You've already helped me several times, however I must ask for an advice once more.
I was assigned to develop .NET application with Data Access Layer and I've decided to use Oracle Database Software to provide sample data.
As I'm absolute novice considering creating DAL I'd be grateful if you can examine my plan in terms of security and reliability:
    My database:
    1) I've created database with sample tables and relations between them. All tables belongs to databaseAdmin.
    2) I've created HR and Manager database users and granted them some privileges on certain databaseAdmin's tables. My intention is to reduce access to unnecessary tables. If my application user want to make some changes to Customers table it should be enough to connect to database as HR.
And now I'd like to map my database using Entity Framework in my application. And that's where I have a problem:
-If I create Entity Model basing on databaseAdmin tables I get perfect model, however every Entity SQL query would be executed on behalf of databaseAdmin, which breaks my idea of hiding unnecessary tables.
-If I create Entity Model for HR and Manager users, my models could overlap on tables that both users have access to and no connection between tables would be generated (as from their point of view those tables are just some tables that belong to databaseAdmin)
Could you help me with this deadlock? Or maybe my assumptions about multiple database users are incorrect? Please, bear in mind I'm a novice.
I was trying to find a solution in web, and there're tons of data discussing technical aspects of Entity Framework etc., but not so many documents about conceptual model of database.

    hi Michael,
    Thanks for you posting!
Sorry for I am not totally understanding your issue. Maybe two points need your confirm:
    1. I confuse with the "Service controller"? IS your meaning MVC controller? Or ServiceController(http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/31688/Using-the-ServiceController-in-C-to-stop-and-start
2.whether  The type of ID in the model is match to the database ? In other words, Is the type of IDin .edmx matched to the database?
By the way, it seems that this issue is more related to EF. You could post this issue on EF discussion for better support.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Multiple databases in one single RAC cluster

Hi, I would like to know if one can have multiple databases running on a single RAC cluster, we have several databases in our shop and would like to consolidate all of them into a single 3-4 node RAC cluster running databases with 10.2 and 11.1 versions.
I am newbie to RAC and would like to get some clarification if anyone has done this, google search comes up with few hits on this topic, so obviously this is not doable.
In our case we have one database supporting critical applications and few other not so critical but are used very extensively between 9-5, so what is the use of RAC if I cannot consolidate all my databases into one cluster, or if I need a separate cluster for each of these critical databases?
I have been all the Oracle docs that keep repeating one database multiple instances and one instance-one machine-one node, they don't even advise running multiple instances on a single node?.
    I appreciate any insight.
    Thanks.

    ora-sql-dba wrote:
Can you give more details on how you would setup multiple databases running different versions on a single RAC cluster, I am yet to find any documentation that supports or even elaborates on this topic. You can configure a cluster with 12 nodes. Then, using dbca, configure a dev instance for nodes 1 and 2, a prod1 instance for nodes 3 to 6 and a prod2 instance for nodes 7 to 12.
You also can configure each of these instances for all 12 nodes. And use it on all 12 nodes.
Or, after configuring it for all 12 nodes, you can start the dev instance on nodes 1 and 2, prod1 on 3 - 6 and prod2 on the remaining nodes. If dev needs more power, you can for example shutdown prod2 on node 12 and start another dev instance there.
My issue is with the 2nd option - running more than one instance on the same node or server. Why? Each instance has a basic resource footprint ito shared memory needed, system processes required (like db writer, log writer, sys monitor) etc. It does not make sense to pay for that same footprint more than once on a server. Each time you do, you need to reduce the amount of resources that can be used by each instance.
So instead of using (for example) 60% of that server's memory as the SGA for a single instance, if you use 2 instances on that server you now have to reduce the SGA of each to 30% of system memory. Effectively crippling those instances by 50% - they will now have smaller buffer caches, require more physical I/O and be more limited in what they can do.
So unless you have very sound technical reasons for running more than one instance on a server (RAC or non-RAC), do not.

  • Using Single Datasource to Access Multiple Databases

    Hi,
We would like to know the pros and cons of accessing multiple
databases through a single datasource, versus accessing each
database through its own datasource. Our environment includes
multiple web servers w/ the latest version of ColdFusion MX 7,
clustered through a load balancer. Each web server has 800+ dsns
pointing to different SQL databases on the same SQL server. We have
noticed that the ColdFusion administrator is taking a long time to
display or verify all datasources and sometimes it even times out.
Another problem is that sometimes the neo-query file gets corrupted
(for unknown reasons) which results in the deletion of one, or
more, or all datasources on the web server.
Because of the issues above we are researching the
possibility of removing most of the datasources, and then accessing
each database through a single bridge datasource. In that regard we
plan to change our queries by inserting the sql db name and user in
front of each table in the query such as:
    <cfquery name="query" datasource="single_dsn_name">
    select * from [#dbname#].dbo.tableName
    </cfquery>
In the example above, obviously #dbname# would be a variable
that will hold the name of the requested database. The code above
would similarly apply to queries using, update, insert and join
    words.
Are there any limitations or negatives from scalability,
performance, and reliability perspective in implementing the above
scenario versus having one datasource for each database.
Also, if there is a better way of accomplishing this, we
would love to hear about it.

Here is my opinion, because I work with both schemas. The
main advantage to use one datasource for all DBs in a SQL Server is
    the simplicity of administration.
But the main disadvantage is security, because you are using
a single user to access all DB in a server, you don't have
isolation, and a user that knows your schema can access data of
other DBs that he sould not be authorized.
Another issue is is a user must access 2 differents DB with
different permissions (a DB only read and the other read/write),
you'll have to create another datasource, user, etc for it.
But the decision depends in the enviroment. If you are a
hosting company, I would use 1 datasource for user or DB. If the
servers and DBs are of the same company, I could use one datasource
    for each SQL server.
    Best regards

  • Auditing DML actions on multiple databases

I am using Oracle 10g Database on Solaris .
I need to audit the complete DML statement issued on a table which exists in multiple schemas(same name with different data from other schemas) in multiple databases ie Consider the table ito be audited is "TAB_A" . This table exists in multiple schemas "USER_A", "USER_B" but as said before only the name remains the same but data is different so they are two different tables. Also there are many databases "DB_A" , "DB_B" which have that table .
There is a master database which collects information from all these databases through database links . Now this database has a table which gets updated with a username, schema name and database name once a new user is created on the databases DB_A and DB_B . So is there any way I can use this info and automate the auditing so that the DBMS_FGA.ADD_POLICY procedure gets fired when a new user say USER_C is created ? This will not involve any manual involvement in running DBMS_FGA.ADD_POLICY procedure for USER_C.TAB_A

auditing will be enabled on a specific table which exists in some schemas eg : TAB_A . So the table name along with schema name would be USER_A.TAB_A and USER_B.TAB_A . think so now it is clear
now the master database contains information about the username , database name . so from this information I should create dbms_fga policy on each database . The table name is constant so it shouldn't be a problem . The point is if a new user is created in any of the databases the policy should be automatically created from the master database without any manual interruption.
This is what i am trying to do ... let me know if this is possible ?

  • Multiple databases in one Environment

I am tryiing to figure out the best way to implement my JE environment. My use case requires that I be able to use UNIX tools like 'cp' to move JE databases from place of generation (development) to place of consumption (production). Moreover, each JE database stores very different data and has different refresh cycles (ex., one of them may be refreshed every week, another may be refreshed once a month, etc.)
    My dilemma is:
1)- Should I use one env w/multiple databases, or,
2)- A separate env for each database?
With (1), I can't see a way of selectively updating one of the databases and copying over the changed JE log files to production servers (for read-only access at runtime). Every time I want to update one database, I'm thinking I'll have to pull down all JE log files, update the DB and push out all JE log files to production servers.
    (2) seems to go against the guidelines I've seen in this forum, viz., one env per process is more efficient.
    Thoughts/experiences/comments are welcome.
    Thanks

    Hi,
What Charles suggested is the best approach if you need to avoid the performance issues with having multiple environments in a single process (you mention that you've read about them elsewhere on the forum). Please also be aware that we're working to solve those problems in an upcoming release. So if you prefer, you can implement your application using multiple environments now, and expect that the performance issues will be resolved later. This might make sense if your deployment will be small at first, and performance will not be a big issue right away.

  • Multiple Keyword Sets (For Multiple Databases)

I work with several different Lightroom databases and it would be nice to be able to have separate sets of keywords that go with each database.
In my specific case, I use one database for my personal photographic endeavors and another for an image library for our church. The keywords tags used for my Nature photography images and the tags used for the event photography shots for church are very different. Hence, there are lots of keywords in both libraries that have zero images attached to them.
It would be very useful in you could allow multiple keyword sets to track with multiple databases.

  • Can we put multiple Database Polling within the asynchronous process

    Hi,
Can we put multiple Database polling within the the same asynchronous BPEL process.
There will be multiple Receive activities to receive the data from the poller.
    Saptarishi

    Hi Peter,
I am using 10.1.3.4 and cannot use ESB/mediator.
    For the 2nd option,
I have tried to put multiple receive's to poll data from a table but it does not work(it waits at the 2nd Receive). Let me try to elaborate the issue a bit.
I have created a table for polling.
    The table has 3 columns :- transaction_id, status, is_read
is_read is kept to implement the logical delete strategy of DB polling.
What I need to do is to maintain a single instance of BPEL to maintain a transaction(which is uniquely identified by transaction_id).
The BPEL should track the different stages of the transaction, i.e whenever a new row is inserted in the table with the updated status for a transaction, it must find the correct instance(by co-relating the transaction_id) and go to the next step (wait for the next receive activity) until all the steps of the transaction is completed.
In the code, I created a correlation set consisting of transaction_id(only). The property transaction_id has an alias to the inbound variable's payload.
In the first Receive, I checked the "create instance" checkbox. Also the correlation set is initialized.
From next Receive onwards the correlation set is checked.
The polling frequency is 5 secs.
The first Receive works fine and the process is instantiated. But it waits at the 2nd Receive indefinitely.
It will be very helpful if you can try this once. If you feel this is not the right approach, please guide me.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Saptarishi

  • How to investigate high io in a RAC with multiple databases?

how to investigate high io in a RAC with multiple databases?

RAC is saying that a single server lacks the processing capacity needed for databaseA. So additional databaseA instances on additional servers are needed in  order to meet the processing demands for databaseA. Thus RAC is required.
Multiple databases on a single server says that the server has spare processing capacity and that it can not only deal with databaseA processing demands, but also with the processing load of databaseB.
So how does your statement about running multiple database RAC instances on the same RAC server node, make sense? And does your I/O issue not immediately point to the fact that no, RAC server1 cannot deal with the I/O resources required by both databaseA and databaseB?
After all, how is I/O scaled on RAC? How is ANYTHING scaled on RAC? By adding more databases to a RAC server node? Of course NOT!!
RAC scales by adding more servers (with a new database instance each) to a physical database in order to scale processing capacity and I/O. By adding more I/O channels to access the SAN/shared storage. By adding more CPUs to increase processing capacity.
Bluntly put - multiple RAC database instances on a single RAC server node is kind of an idiotic approach to scalability in my view....

  • Transaction across multiple databases in the same BDB environment

    Hi,
I have multiple databases and one metadata database all in the same BDB environment. At runtime I want to create an additional database, update this database and update the metadata database in the same environment under one transaction. Are there any issues in having transactions that span multiple databases in the same environment?
    Thanks,
    Pooja

There is virtually no difference between using multiple databases and a single database in a transaction. Concurrency is determined by other factors such as whether multiple threads access the same records. See the Writing Transactional Applications for more information:

  • Best way to connect java app to multiple databases?

I'm working on my first commercial application, and I want it to be as flexible as possible, meaning I want it to be able to connect to a wide range of databases, as the customer chooses. I'm wondering what the best way is to accomplish this, I don't really want to have to buy a commercial license for third party ODBC drivers, any one have some good comments on this?

    You have two fundamental options:
Use an O/R mapping tool like: Hibernate, EJB BMP, JDO, etc.
Develop your own using JDBCIf you opt for the former, you should ask youself, "What value do i add? Or should I simply use these technologies?" The advantages are that dozens of other developers, going down similar routes, have faced the obstracles you will face and more. The disadvantage is that none of these developers has actually faced your specific problem. This is not to say that the solution does not already exist. The efficacy of this methodology will be how closely the general solution fits with your own (and since many problems have the same challenges, this will often be true).
If you opt for the latter, you will have both an opportunity and a pitfall. The precise, business issue your current project addresses has many things both in common with other projects and also a handful of unique challenges. The hard part is determining whether this challenge actually differs in some fundamental way, or whether you have discerned some fault or opportunity in your methodology compared to standard (or even cutting-edge) practices.
In reality, the challenge of "connecting to numerous, heterogenous (and probably vaprous) database systems" has long been addressed. Addressed, but perhaps not solved. If your goal is to develop a class library, for personal or consulting use, or to increase your understanding of the O/R boundary and best practices to obviate it, then my best advice is to read existing literature, and give it your all. There is no right answer here, and building on an existing experience of failure and success is indispensible.
If your aim is to solve the O/R mapping challenge, or to suppant JDBC BMP, Hibernate or JDO, then my hat is off to you. We are all eagerly awaiting that day. (Sadly, after much effort, it has not yet arrived).
So, can you connect Java to multiple databases, and even a diverse array of RDBMS vendors? Of course! But what will you do with those conections?

Is it not possibe to run a FR report by select members from multiple databases in a single grid??
    Please have your valuable inputs.

Yes it possible to retrive data from multiple database using single grid.
Also there are few limitations namely:
Database connections must be of the same type (for example, both must be Essbase database connections or both must be Financial Management database connections).
Mismatched number of dimensions in the database connections may cause retrieval errors.

  • Multiple databases in one file: a small snafu

    Hello everyone,
Opening multiple databases in a single file is an administrative convenience. It is well explained in the manual (see db/docs/ref/am/opensub.html). Normally, there is little difference between databases in their own physical files or grouped together in a single physical file. There is one small sentence in the manual that says the following:
    (begin fragment)
However, since multiple databases in a file exist in a single physical file, opening two databases in the same file simultaneously requires locking be enabled unless all of the handles are read-only. As the locks for the two databases can only conflict during page allocation, this additional locking is unlikely to affect performance.
    (end fragment).
I didn't pay attention to it, except the "unlikely to affect performance" part which told me that I wasn't to worry about it. The sun was shining. Life was good.
And I was wrong. It was one of those "epic bug quests" I had to embark on, only to realise that it may not be a BDB bug, but my carelessnes. Nevertheless, I'm left with an uneasy feeling which I would like to explain here.
Consider BDB configured as a concurrent data store.
There are 2 threads. The first thread has the following pseudocode:
    cursor1 = db1->cursor(...)
    while(cursor1->c_get(... DB_NEXT...))
    // 1
    cursor2 = db2->cursor(...)
    while(cursor2->c_get(... DB_NEXT...))
The second thread does only the following:
    db3->put(...)
db1, db2 and db3 are all distinct databases. All cursors are read-only (the cursor implicitly used in db3->put is of course a write cursor).
While the first thread is running, the second thread executes db3->put(...) at "//1".
    Question: what happens?
Answer 1: if db1, db2 and db3 reside in different physical files, nothing special happens. Everything proceeds as it should.
Answer 2: if db1, db2 and db3 reside in the same physical file, both threads block "sometimes".
The "sometimes" used here means "when the put operation in thread 2 needs to allocate a new page".
Reading the BDB source code is extraordinarily difficult (which says more about my limitations than about the clarity of the code) but here is what happens, as far as I could determine:
(thread 1) cursor1 needs and acquires a read lock on db1
(thread 2) db3->put needs a write lock on db2 to allocate a new page. Since db2 is in the same physical file as db1 and thread 1 already has a read lock, thread 2 waits until the read lock is released. Thread 2 blocks.
(thread 1) cursor 2 needs a read lock on db3. For some reason, BDB detects that the another thread is waiting for a write lock on the physical file, and thread 1 blocks.
Both threads block waiting on each other to complete.
I suppose the system is the way it is to avoid starvation, but there you have it: be careful when you're lumping together multiple databases in one file!
Anyone who can clarify or confirm this is welcome.
    Vincent

I had experienced a similar problem. I run multiple process. Each one of them starts a transaction that does db->put and db->pget to its own database (which also has a secondary index). When each database is in a separate physical file there is no problem but when I put all databases in a single file the processes start to dead-lock.
The following combination of options solved the deadlocking problem:
    - use serializable isolation level instead of snapshot, i.e. do not pass DB_TXN_SNAPSHOT to txn_begin
    - do not pass the DB_NO_WAIT option to txn_begin
    - use Btree instead of a Hash
    Hope that helps.
