Multiple dbus instances: should this be happening?

Hey, I've been using Arch for a couple months. The "how many processes are you running" thread inspired me to examine my process list, and I discovered that I occasionally see up to eight "dbus-daemon" and "dbus-launch" processes! I understand that one is the system message bus and one is the session bus, but should I have all those others? Google searching "multiple dbus instances" and variations turns up a lot of unrelated stuff, so hopefully someone with greater dbus-fu than I will tell...
On a somewhat related note, I sometimes see two "notification-da" processes. I assume that this is the libnotify daemon? How can I stop that from happening?
Thank you for your help!

For example pressing the sidebar item for files in last 24 hours (or Today, or whatever it's called), brought up a couple of new files on the new Leopard installation drive, but also showed files from an account of the same name (but completely different password) on the internal drive.
The password being different doesn't matter: this is only used to authenticate the account to the system, and once authenticated the account has certain privileges, like owning files.
In fact the account names being the same in the two systems doesn't matter either. Ownership of the files is governed by a numeric User ID and this is probably the same in your Tiger and Leopard installations.
So what you are seeing is perfectly normal, and how permissions work.
This just doesn't seem very secure - it would seem to me that all I would need to do would be to plug in an external drive to another Mac then boot from ext drive and I would be able to see any accounts that weren't mine automatically.
If you have physical access to the machine, basically all bets are off.

No, a normal iPod Classic doesn't shake and makes pinging noises, unless you are playing a pinging song. I would suggest you read this exorcism post by tt2

  • Opinions - should this be happening so early?

I have had my Intel iMac for about 10 days and have twice had to reset the PRAM for issues with iSight. I'm a little disappointed that I've had to do any kind of troubleshooting so early on, and I wonder if it's an indication of bigger problems to come.
So, can you set my mind at rest? Is this just what a Mac owner is supposed to do and get used to, or am I justified in feeling it should work right out of the box!
Thanks so much for your opinions!

    Hi peanut006!
If it literally did not work right out of the box, you should return it/should have already returned it.
If you're experienced with Macs and it didn't work the way you expected, then return it. If you're not experienced with Macs, then you may have some learning time to put in.
I would guess that most iSight users don't even know what a PRAM reset is, or an SMC reset, which is different from an SMU reset (Intel-based iMacs don't have an SMU). In that case, if you have been having issues that you can't connect to specific actions that you have taken, then you may be looking at a future full of more of them. Generally, most users seem to have at least a hint of what went wrong, or an idea that they probably took some action precipitously (without knowing what might/would happen next).
It isn't unusual for a new user, or even an experienced user, to click that mouse too fast and too often, thinking that the more clicks they try, the better chance they'll be able to "fix" something. What they forget is that the hand is still quicker than the eye, so it's fairly easy to dig oneself a little deeper into a situation. Since Macs now use journaling on the hard drive format, given some time, Macs can actually correct for some of the mistakes made by their users. I'm not about to give up using that kind of machine/OS:))

  • New BB Line... should this be happening?

Hi guys. I live in the middle of nowhere with a broadband speed of 256kbps. My neigbour down the road wass getting 1 meg so I went and bought a new line only for broadband. It has one socket in the whole house (the master socket) and one device connected to it (BTHH3). On the first day the line capacity was at 620kbps (IP Profile of 512kbps). This morning the line capacity has risen to 726! Excellent! This new internet has been considerably more stable than my other line. It never cuts out and my download speed is rooted at 512. When I ran a speed test it literally didnt drop from 512 which has to be a good sign.
However, I was checking some of the stats and my FEC downstream has gone through the roof. It has reached something like 1300. I was downloading all last night as a test to see how much could be done in one night so perhaps that is why. I also know BT do tests during the first 10 days so perhaps that is another reason for such a high value.
My primary concern is that BT, when they see such a high FEC, will reduce my speed/interleave type etc. etc.
Anyway, could someone please perhaps shed some light on what's going?
    Thanks,
    Mike.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Im afraid Mike, thats about the best you can expect.  I mean 1MB would be pushing it I think.
Can you comfirm if you're connected at the master socket or an extension socket?
Always connect at the master socket.  As you live on a long line there are some things you can do such as this taking out the bell wire; it's a great wire at picking up interference from extensions and other sources of interference, which can have a dyer affect on your broadband.
Here's a guide on how to take it out using the jarviser site (great site aswell!) http://bit.ly/4LEKJg .
And also may be worth taking a look at the stats from the test socket.
    I mean I live on a 9km long line but its not reflected in the Line Attenuation.  But there are things you can do like I've done to improve my line speed;
    1.  Would be to get an engineer to fit a filtered faceplate:
    2. Would be to get a shielded RJ11 cable which minimizes the interference, and also I use a BT Business Hub which has a great reputation for stabibility; and also boosted my sync speed by around half to three quaters of a meg.
    My current setup:
And also I crimped my wires with gel crimps just to ensure there was no other signal leakage from any other wires

  • Should this be happening?

I was playing my electric guitar through a cable connected to my iPod Touch 5, and I had Garage Band freeze on me. I didn't need to do a reset with my iPod Touch 5, though. I just simply quit the app and reopened it. It doesn't crash ALL the time, but I guess I'm just wondering if its possible for Garage Band to just crash occasionally. I had no apps other than Garage Band open at the time of the crash, but I had the "make Garage Band run in background" on. Could the performance issues it warns about when that is on, be referring to possible crashes? I am hoping my iPod Touch 5 isn't broken. :( I don't mind the crashes, but even when a different app would ever crash, I get OCD, thinking the problem with my iPod Touch 5 and start wondering if it needs repair. Thank you for any responses!

Hmm. Alright. I tend to get paranoid, because I've had apps crash in the past, and Apple would make it sound like a kind of serious issue. Just so my iPod Touch doesn't need repair, it's alright. (I'm still new to the iPod Touch. I just upgraded from the Video model. Lol.)

  • PO type UB is pulling in a Purchase Info Record - should this happen?

    Hi All,
I've been looking around the net few a few days, off and on, but I can't find an answer.
A colleague has created a Purchase Order type UB but it is bringing in a Purchase Info Records that relates to a different receiving plant. This is bringing an incorrect tax code into play.
The work around is currently as follows
Go into the (incorrect) PIR that is being engaged
    Remove the tax code
    Process the PO
Go back into the PIR and change the tax code back to it's original setting,
Am I correct in assuming that PIRs are not engaged in a UB transfer?
What should be done to stop this from happening
Apologies if this is obvious or if I have not given enough info.
    Cheers

I know that I need info records for UB order  if I work with APO.
Are you sure that the inforecord that is pulled is for a different receiving plant?
Is the info record really created at plant level, or only at purchasing org level?
And both plants share the same purchasing org?

It was very hard to see what the box says because the message displays for less than one second. However, I was able to record it with my iphone and pause it until I got a shot of the message. The box says the following:
"Do you want the application “java” to accept incoming network connections?
Clicking deny may limit the application’s behavior. This setting can be changed in the Firewall pane of Security preferences."
I did make some changes. I will see if it works.
    Thank you!!!

8th  ----  Apple is going down the toilet because the products are good, not great, and the itunes instructions are non existent

    I agree with stevejobsfan - (0123).
However, if what you actually want to do is to fix/sort out your problem, why no try posting a question on that subject?
For starters - you can re-name the tracks in your iTunes library, so it is possible to correct the changes that you must have made that mean that songs are now "unknown artists and albums."

You posted in the OS 9 & below forum. What OS X version are you using? What model Canon printer? Canon printers have a test print capability (open the Printer Utility). What happens when you do a test print? Are all the printer cartridges in their proper location? Sometimes when you print "black", the printer uses a mixture of the colors to get "black". In the Printer Utility, check the levels of the other cartridges. There may be one color that is clogged.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

Right, like I'm trying to say, THERE IS NO SAFARI MENU bar. Example: I have multiple applications open, I click on a Photoshop window, the correct menu or title bar or whatever changes. Every other application window I click on brings up the correct "whatever" bar. If I click on the desktop, the "Finder Bar" shows up.
Everythiing else, BUT SAFARI, works the same way since OS X came out.  This is ridiculous.
I'm getting the vibe that Apple is trying to get rid of the finder.... this is the way wrong direction.
