Multiple Desktop Icons in Sidebar
Here's the setup:
I have my user profile setup on a secondary (non-booting) HD named "Macintosh HD". I hooked up and booted off of an old laptop in FW Target mode, who's HD also was named "Macintosh HD." Well this caused all sorts of probs with my profile going missing upon disconnecting the laptop and rebooting. Opened up terminal and looked in /Volumes, there was listed "Macintosh HD" and "Macintosh HD1," the latter being the one that held my profile. So I created a temp user and logged in with that name, deleted the "Macintosh HD" volume, which was basically empty, renamed the "Macintosh HD1" to "Macintosh HD" and pointed my user to the profile. Logged out and back in as myself and all my preferences and what not were back in place.
Here's the only problem that I haven't been able to resolve. When saving/opening files from an application, in the sidebar, there are multiple desktops, 3 to be exact. One has a generic folder icon, the other two have the desktop icon and both actually point to the true desktop.If I open up a Finder window, there is only one desktop icon, it's just a problem in the Open/Save dialog box. How can I get it back to one desktop in the sidebar?
That works in a normal Finder window, but not in the Save/Open dialog within an application.
However, I deleted the sidebar.plist file within the Preferences folder, restarted and all is back to normal.

I mistakenly deleted my Desktop icon in the sidebar. How do I get it back?
Click on an empty spot on the Desktop to activate Finder.
Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > Show these items in the sidebar:
Favorites
Checkmark the box beside "Desktop" under "Favorites" -

See the multiple desktops? Seems to get duplicated when I install things sometimes. When I open a normal finder window after an install, I can see duplicate Desktop, Applications, Documents etc, which I drag off the finder window, but when I do a File -> Open in Word or Text Edit (which is what the pic is of) those multiple desktops show up.
Any ideas? I've trashed the finder prefs file, but not sure where else to go. Thanks much.

Finder crashes when clicking desktop icon in sidebar - any help?
I ran TM for a couple of hours on my iBook and only searched for a couple of archived files and restored one just to see if it works. Since then, when I click on the desktop icon in the left finder navigation, it crashes and I need to force quit the finder.
I have tried to delete the finder.plist file, but it did not help.
My 2 questions:
(a) can this crashing be caused by TM?
(b) how can I fix it?

Hi all,
my problem is: my desktop sidebar icon is empty (see image below).
I tried to restore it using the cmd-x in "get info" panel and using Candybar (icon replacement software) but nothing happened.
Can anyone help me to fix it?

Multiple desktops/different icons?
I am a student and I use my new mbp for lots of school related things, and it would be so easy and much neater looking if I could have all school related links and icons on one desktop, and personal things on another. But I can't figure out how; no matter how I try to move them, both desktops retain the same icons. Surely there is a way to do this? I don't keep programs running if I am not actively using them so the ability to have multiple desktops seems pointless if they are identical. Thanks.
EDIT: doesn't it run down the battery faster to leave things running anyway?There's no way to do this out of the box. However there are 3rd party programs that provide that functionality. One I know of is called Desktop Tidy.
There's no reason not to leave programs running. A program that isn't doing anything wastes no CPU cycles to speak of and if the OS really needs the memory for something else, the programs running in the background doing nothing will be auto-terminated.
I keep my email, word processor, calendar, database, browser, Reminder, notes, and several other applications running all the time. -
Greyed/multiple network server desktop icons in mavericks on mavericks server
We have a new Mac Mini Server running Mavericks Server and all of the Mavericks clients are ending up with multiple server share icons on their desktops. All of the desktop icons will become greyed so you cannot click on them. We have rebooted the server and the Macs but the problem keeps coming back. Getting this error when trying to eject the icons "Share Name is a partition on a disk that has 2 partitions. Do you want to eject Share Name only or both partitions?" Any ideas?
Let me ask this a different way. Can someone try the following and tell me what result you get for Step 5?
Given: A workstation running Windows 8, joined to a domain on a network.
Given: A server (Active Directory Domain Controller) running Windows Server 2008 R2. (Not sure the server's OS matters; it's Windows 8 that matters.)
Step 1: Create a dummy text file (or other dummy file) on the Windows 8 workstation.
Step 2: Create a shortcut to the dummy text file on the Windows 8 desktop.
Step 3: Edit the shortcut's properties and change the icon, selecting some icon file (e.g., WHATEVER.ICO) located on the Windows 8 workstation.
My Result: The icon displays correctly on the desktop shortcut.
Step 4: Now copy the icon file and paste it somewhere on the server.
Step 5: Change the shortcut's properties to look for the icon on the server where you copied it to.
My Result: The icon displays correctly in the shortcut properties window, but once I apply the change the desktop shortcut displays a "blank document" icon.
Note: The type of file the shortcut points to is unimportant-- you can try it with a TXT, DAT, EXE, COM, or any other type of file. The issue is with the shortcut's icon, not the shortcut's target.
Interesting Aside: If you change the shortcut so the target is the ICO file itself, the icon is displayed correctly. -
Can't get rid of desktop's icon in sidebar? There are two of them! (w/pic)
I was trying to clean up my home folder when I accidentally dragged the "desktop" icon into the trash. I drug it back out and put it back in there, but now, when I go to open a file in another program, I see TWO desktop icons!
I don't see two of them in the regular finder sidebar, just anytime a "browse" box is open.
How do I get rid of it? Thanks!My guess is it is automatically adding a Desktop item to the open file dialog, and it is displaying the one you manually put there. Remove the one you added, then go to the Finder Preferences and check the Desktop item in the Sidebar Prefs.

I was happy to read that there was such a thing as Multiple Desktops on the Mac but then was disappointed to actually see it in action.
I thought that I could place folders and files on different desktops so that it could be easier for me to organise my work. But so far, I can only assign applications to open up in specific desktops which isn't what I was looking for. In fact, I am struggling to see the point of this - the only thing I can see that would be an advantage is that if I have multiple applications running, I could assign for example, Photoshop to D2, Word to D3 and just click on the icon at the bottom to zap straight to that app without having to look for it under all my open apps. This is the most I can see in its usefulness.
BUT... if other users have other ways they use these desktops I would really be interested to know about it - or if any one is aware of a good app that does what I want, i.e. different files on different desktops, it would be great.

MazI figured it out. ^1 typed from the number keys is not equivalent to ^1 typed from the numeric keypad. So, when you go into system prefs / keyboard / shortcuts / mission control, it may LOOK the same, but it is not. You simply have to select each of your spaces and change them to ^1, ^2, ^3, etc., using the NUMERIC keypad. It will look the same to you, but it will work properly after that.

Can desktops be named within OSX 10.8.2? I keep multiple desktops open for different subjects/activities and would like to title them instead of them being simply "Desktop #1", "Desktop #2" &c. Can this be done?

Thank you very much for your reply and direction to a previous thread.
After reading through the posts, there is (currently) no way to entitle individual desktops. They either take on the name of the full screen application (i.e. "Mail") or remain as "Desktop #1". One suggestion was to create a background picture for each desktop with a title within the picture, but this is only a half-fix, as the title still won't placed under the desktop picture to view as you scroll across the multiple desktops. The more desktops open (I currently have 12) the smaller icon becomes, which makes it quite useless to have the title within the picture itself (it would be teeny-tiny). -
Are multiple desktops in 'Lion' totally pointless?
Having multiple desktops for different activities or jobs seems pointless if you can't open a software application from the toolbar when it is already in use on another desktop. i.e. If I need my addressbook open on my personal desktop and also on my work desktop, I can't do it. If I try the desktops flip across screen 'wham! to the desktop where the application was originally opened! No good. The only thing that comes close is to open a new 'file' on the "main" desktop and move that individual file to another desktop whilst in the Mission Control position. That says it all! It's daft... and if you close it down you cant open it again without redoing the whole mission control thing. Am I missing something here apart from my patience?
They way that I perfer to work, there are no cases where I want the OS to switch to another desktop simply because I choose to open an application that happens to already be opened on another desktop. For me, I want the application to open in the current desktop, regardless if it is already open in another desktop. I tend to have multiple applications open on a single desktop in windowed mode - where no single application consumes the entire screen. For me, out-of-sight-out-of mind applies - I need to be able to see what I have to work with.
However, some of my friends at work prefer to work in a full-screen mode, where a singe application takes up the entire screen. They are constantly switching back and forth from one application to the other, typically by pressing CMD+TAB. I guess in this context, having the OS switch from one desktop to another based on where the application is opened would make sense. But, to me that seems like a big waste of a desktop - only showing one application.
So, here is an example of my use-case. I come to work and powerup my Mac. I open Finder and Excel so that I can start working on a report. While I'm working on the report a friend comes over and asks me to help him with his report. In this case, I would prefer to switch to an unused desktop and then proceed to open the applications that I need for this new task, such as Finder and Excel (the same ones I was using for my report but now I need for my friend's report). I already have context in those applications on Desktop1 and I don't want to lose that, hence my desire to use another desktop. So, I go to Desktop2 and click on the Finder icon in the Dock. Instead of it opening a new instance of Finder on Desktop2, I'm jolted over to Desktop1 where Finder was already opened. But I don't want that - I want to keep my place in Finder on Desktop1 and open a new one on Desktop2. Sure, I can hold the CTRL key down while I press on the Finder icon in the Dock and tell it to open a new window. However, instead of it opening a new window in Desktop2, it opens it in Desktop1 while leaving me in Desktop2 and wondering where the new Finder window is. It seems that Safari works correctly in that it will open a new Safari window in Desktop2 if I hold the CTRL key down while I click on its icon in Dock. However, if I forget that, I'm transported over to Desktop1 - which I don't want.
How Firefox is handled is just weird. Lets say that I am in Desktop1 and I have Firefox opened. Then I switch to Desktop2 and now I want Firefox open in Desktop2 too. While in Desktop2 I can hold the CTRL key when clicking on its icon in Dock and tell it to open a new window. Indeed, it will open a new window - but not in Desktop2. Instead, it opens a new window in Desktop1 and I get tranported over to Desktop1. Again, not what I want.
Sure, you can blame the applications for this. But to me, the OS is the coordinator of all the resource on the system, including the applications. So, in my opinion, if it does not work consistently and and if it does not work how I expect then it does not work well.

Multiple desktops etc in Open/Save dialogs
I have not found that this causes an actual problem (so far) but it is strange and anoying.
Recently, when doing a "save as" I found to my surprise that I had 2 "desktop" icons in the dialog window. As the days have gone by, this has grown to 16. Also 16 copies of all the icons from the side-bar. This is in both open and save dialog windows.
Recently I installed Modul8 and also I have used Vue 5 (which has crashed and refused to open since) but I cant see that this multiple copies in open/save dialog-windows is connected to this.
I have run Onyx, but it did not fix the problem.

How do I turn on multiple desktops in Lion? I have a new (Aug 2011) MBP with Lion, and cannot find any way to create one. I have no "+" icon on mission control. I do have the high res screen, and some data appears to be off screen. They worked fine on my previous MBP (June 2009 with Snow Leopard).
First make sure the screen is not zoomed. Hold CNTL and scroll down. That will unzoom the desktop if slightly zoomed.
Second, go back into Mission control and move your cursor up to the top right. You'll see the pale desktop image slide out from the right side with a + symbol. Click that.

Desktop icon in column view and docking bar
Hi, I had an icon for the desktop on the left side of my column view since I got my machine. I got the bright idea today to move it to my dock and it went "poof!" when I tried to move it. I can't undo it and I am lost without my desktop view to rename my screen shots. Help! How do I place the desktop icon on my column view again and it is possible to put it on my dock?

What I referred to as your Home folder, is your account folder with the small house icon, located:
HD > Users > HERE: In that folder is the Desktop folder.

Multiple Desktop Windows suddenly not available how do I fix this?
I changed one preference in MIssion Control System Preference - - assigning Dashboard to F5. I then noticed that when I open mission control it shows only Dashboard and 1 application desktop. Also the ways of accessing desktops have been limited to control up arrow and control down arrow. I used to be able to assign control 1, control 2, etc. or control left arrow control right arrow. How do I regain multiple desktops and more ways of accessing them? I'd be most appreciative of any insight or help. Thanks.
Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
