Multiple devices on airport extreme

Hi im a new bod to the whole apple thing but i have pick up a few bits and pieces, having discoverd i required a airport express because the belkin device i had was not campatable wih apple hardware I have tried but with limited success to use a USB hub and connect two printers into one AX, is this possible. At the moment one printer seems to become dominant, is this always going to be the case or can i connect more device onto the USB hub (ie HDD) along with the printers.

can i connect
more device onto the USB hub (ie HDD) along with the
printers.
I know you're not supposed to, but I've wondered about this too. So what happens when you try?

  • How do I use more than one USB device with Airport Extreme?

I would like to plug a shared hard drive into my new airport extreme and still be able to plug in a shared printer as well. How am I supposed to do this with only one USB port. Do I use a USB hub???
Is it possible to connect a hard drive using one of the ethernet ports?

To use multiple USB devices you would use a powered USB hub.
You can connect a hard drive to one of the Ethernet ports providing the hard drive is a NAS and supports Ethernet connections. In that situation the NAS hard drive is just like any other Ethernet client and the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not handle the file sharing services. The drive itself would provide the file sharing services.

  • Can't connect wireless device to airport extreme

I bought airport extreme router second hand and am connecting it to HP desktop windows 8.  All software is installed properly and router is connected.  I have a solid green light, and internet access on desktop, but cannot connect wireless devices to network (kindle, cell phone, etc.)  All wireless devices show excellent network signal strength, allow me to put the password in, but all show connected and have not internet access.

This appears to be a simple modem, so assuming that you reset the modem completely before you connected it to the AirPort Extreme, the next step would be to check to insure that the AirPort is in router mode and not bridge mode.
Open up AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme, and then click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below that
Make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing is set to Share a public IP address
Click Update to save any changes, and give the AirPort a full minute to restart
Check the network again to see if devices can connect now.

  • Which is Best... Connect Devices to Airport Extreme OR Modem/Router? And Which is Best for DHCP/NAT?

I have a modem/router from the ISP and have just purchased an Airport Extreme to use for the WIFI instead of the modem/router.
I have 3 other devices on the network connected to the modem/router via ethernet: AppleTV, Smart Blueray Player and a NAS drive.
So I have the modem/router in DHCP/NAT mode, and Airport Extreme in Bridged mode.
But I wondered if the Airport Extreme should be in DHCP/NAT, the other 3 devices connected to that via Ethernet, and the modem/router in bridged mode.
Which is better, or are they the same?
    Thanks

So I have the modem/router in DHCP/NAT mode, and Airport Extreme in Bridged mode.
This would be the simplest, correct way to configure your network.
Unless you need some special feature from the AirPort Extreme....that would require that the AirPort Extreme handle DHCP and NAT service.....like the Guest Network feature......then it would probably be best to keep things simple and leave them "as is" on your network.
Either the modem needs to be in Bridge Mode and the AirPort Extreme handles DHCP and NAT.....or.....the modem/router handles DHCP and NAT and the AirPort Extreme is setup in Bridge Mode.
it does not really matter which device handles DHCP and NAT as long as your feature requirements are being met on the network.
Personally, I strongly prefer to use a simple modem....not a modem/router....and another separate router to control the network. But, your ISP may not offer that option.

  • Multiple users on airport extreme

To sum it up: Can or can't I connect the same disk from several computers at the same time if I use it with AirPort extreme?
    What solution am I after?
I want to get rid of my bid desktop PC and only use my laptop. The problem is that I have 4hdd that I still want to be able to use. The first thing that stroke my mind was a nas (network-attached storage) but it takes up to mutch space that i dont have so therefor thats not a good idea. I trembled over a USB server device from Silex and also one from Belkin but these have the limitation of only alowing one user at the time on easch disk. I want to be able to access the same disk from several computers at the same time since we are more than one in my household...
So therefor I started to look at the airport extreme in order to see if thats a good selution. I can't find anything that eather confirm that I can connect to the same disk from many computers at the same time, but I don't finde anything that says that I can't eather...
If you have any better solution I'm all ears... =)
    Thanks, Tommy

Yes, more than one user should be able to use the attached USB hard drives at a time.

  • Can I connect a network storage device to Airport Extreme or Express?

I have a wireless network with an Airport Extreme base station and 2 Airport Express network extenders and would like to add a network storage device to the network so our whole family can access it for backups and storage.
Can I connect a USB or etherent storage device(hard drive) to one of the ports on the extreme or express and have it show up on all of our desktops like our printers do?
If not--Is there another to accomplish what I need?
    Thanks!

You can ethernet storage, but not USB storage.

  • Internet connection instable on only one device, via airport extreme

    Situation
I have the strangest situation. In my setup, every device connects just fine with the WLAN. Yet, one iphone 4 is for periods of time losing internet connection whilst still connected to the WLAN.
    Setup
I have my airport extreme connected to a Zyxel modem and set my airport extreme to bridge mode. I turned the WIFI off for the modem, and ON for the airport extreme.
All but one device have no trouble connecting
The following devices operate just fine:
    Mac Pro [wireless]
Playstation 3 [wired into airport extreme]
    Playstation Vita [wireless]
    HP laptop [wireless]
    my girlfriend's iphone 4
The problem occurs solely on my iphone 4.
    Oddities
While me and my girlfriend have the exact same phone (not jailbreaked) and both just the latest version of iOS, hers works fine while my phone has this connection trouble.
The connection with the WLAN is never lost; I can communicate with other devices on the same LAN, it's just the internet that's not working for periods of time.
    Workarounds
If I turn on the WIFI-settings on the modem directly to create another WLAN and connect my iphone to that network, the connections is stable again. The problem is just that the range of my modem is not as good as that of the airport extreme.
While it works fine in most of the house, in the bedroom my iphone receives 1 bar of signal. It however receives 3 bars on the airport-extreme network.. but as mentioned: with instable internet.
    Help required
I can't seem to locate what the problem is. It's easy to suggest it's my iphone that is somehow broken, but then it's fairly odd that the problem is limited to only my airport extreme WLAN network. Yet, if the problem is with the WLAN network than why is it the only device that has trouble connecting to it.
Hopefully someone has a suggestion to what could be the problem and a way to solve it?

I have nearly the same issue.  Using your template here is my situation.
    Situation
I have the strangest situation. In my setup, every device connects just fine with the WLAN. Yet, one iPad Retina is for periods of time losing internet connection whilst still connected to the WLAN.  Most often it happens on the YouTube app or downloading app updates.
    Setup
I have my airport extreme connected to a comcast cable modem with no wifi (so airport extreme only).
All but one device have no trouble connecting (it's funny how close our situation is)
The following devices operate just fine:
    Mac Pro 1 [wireless]
    Mac Pro 2 [wireless]
Playstation 3 [wired into airport extreme]
    Mac Air [wireless]
    my girlfriend's iphone 4s
    my iphone 5
    Apple TV [wireless]
    my iPad Retina (only issue)
The problem occurs solely on my iPad Retina.
    Oddities
When the iPad is not working, all the other devices (phones included) work fine.
The connection with the WLAN is never lost; I can communicate with other devices on the same LAN, it's just the internet that's not working for periods of time.
    Workarounds
My iPad is 4G so if I turn off wi-fi it works fine over 4g.  NOTE:  I HAD THE GENIUS BAR REPLACE THE IPAD LAST WEEK.  NO CHANGE....
BECAUSE I CHANGED OUT MY IPAD, I THINK IT MAY BE AIRPORT RELATED BUT CANNOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM EITHER.
....I feel just a bit better that I'm not the only one.

  • Opening multiple ports on Airport Extreme

I need to open multiple ports on an Airport Extreme to allow for ftps service (about 500 ports). In port forwarding, it appears that I would have to enter 500 entries to do that (e.g. port 4001, 4002, 4003 etc.) Sounds wacky. In other routers (or linux sortware), multiple entries can be entered like "400, 4000-4500". Apple docs don't address this (from what I could find). Is there a syntax for multiple port forwarding?

Are you using the round 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or the square 802.11b/g/n AEBS?
The round AEBS does not allow you to enter ranges. The only solution for a great number of ports is to use the default host option and send ALL the ports to the designated computer.
I believe that the square AEBS allows you to enter ranges.

  • Connect Mobile Broadband device to Airport Extreme?

    Hi,
I'm thinking about changing broadband service providers.  I'm considering getting a mobile broadband device from either Virgin mobile or Netzero.  Both of these devices will allow me to connect up to 5 devices but when I start thinking about computers, phones, printers, iPad...we have more than 5 devices in the house that would want to connect to the wireless network.  I am corrently using an airport extreme (which I love).  Does anyone know if it's possible to connect one of these mobile broadband devices to the airport for a larger network?  If so, how?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hello,
I guess that it would be correct to assume that you have looked at hotspot devices (small access points or routers with Wi-Fi capabilities). The following discussion concerned a similar problem, where Bob Timmons suggested to use Ethernet between routers. Unfortunately, a hotspot may not have an Ethernet (LAN) port at all.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4033477
One solution could possibly be a slightly different approach. There are several dedicated mobile broadband routers available (from Dovado, Netgear, Cradlepoint, and others). These typically accept a USB mobile broadband modem (check that the router has support for the exact model and the phone network in question). These routers do usually have at least one LAN port (which may allow a wired connection to another router, if merely the Wi-Fi capacity would not be adequate).

  • Add Certain Devices to AirPort Extreme

I Was just wondering if it is possible to just add certain devices/users to the airport extreme, and other devices that try to connect to my network wont connect.
i just want my network to be really secure!

You cannot restrict access by device "type," but you can by MAC address. Effectively, you would be using the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for Access Control. You would enter the MAC addresses of the device that you wish to allow access. Those not on the list would not gain entry.

  • Multiple printers by Airport Extreme & USB hub

Is it possible to connect two printers to the one Airport Extreme with a USB hub (not the power-over-ethernet version)? I want to use a Canon iP5200 and a Dymo Label Writer 310, without repeatedly exchanging USB cables or switching on both computers at the same time.

  • Multiple Printers on Airport Extreme POE

I have 2 Epson 1280 printers connected to an Airport Extreme POE through a USB hub. The Airport only sees one printer. I renamed it "Right" and unplugged it. The other printer Shows and I renamed it "Left". Which ever printer is closer to the airport on the hub is displayed in the configuration utility. Firmware is 5.6 and utility is 4.2. Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated.

This seems to be a limitation of the current Airport firmware - you cannot connect two printers of exactly the same make/model since only one will be "seen".

  • Time Machine creates multiple sparsebundles on Airport Extreme

I recently started using a new hard drive for Time Machine, attached to my Airport Extreme (previous 250GB WD portable, now 1.5TB Seagate Freeagent). I never had any issues with the old drive, but have noticed a very weird problem on the new drive, and despite a lot of searching online I can't find anyone with the same issue.
What I've noticed is that on occasion, Time Machine decides not to use the existing sparsebunle on my drive, and instead creates a brand new sparsebundle and starts to backup my entire system from scratch. The new sparsebundle has the same name as previously, just with " 1" added to the end of the name. E.g.:
    Original - "Peter's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle"
    New - "Peter's MacBook Pro 1.sparsebundle"
If I delete the new sparsebundle from the drive and get Time Machine to "Back Up Now", it seems to find the original sparsebundle again, and will do an incremental backup like nothing ever happened.
Two possible leads on why it might be happening:
1 - I've noticed in the last two days that this has happened on the first backup after I get home from work. I.e., Time Machine fails to backup all day while I'm at work (cause it can't access the drive) then when I get home and connect back to the Airport, the first backup creates the new sparsebundle. Only noticed this the last two days, so it's not a long-running pattern.
2 - The new drive does make a lot of loud "clicking" noises (apparently a running problem with Seagate's 1.5TB Freeagent drives, relted to power-management of the drive).
Either of these sound like a possible lead on the issue? Anyone have ideas on a possible fix?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Peter

One evening about 8 I came to the the computer to find a dialog box indicating that it was backing up something over 800,000 files, about 60 GB and counting; Time Machine indicated a Latest Backup at 3:30 that afternoon. No unusual events that afternoon to set things off track, as far as I know. It was creating a new sparsebundle as Pete A indicated, same name with a <space> "1" added. Unlike his experience, however, deleting the newer sparsebundle does not provide access to the older one.
Any ideas how to redesignate the older sparsebundle as the real backup? The Mac is not seeing it now, which is why it keeps starting a new one. Since this is apparently a baseline snapshot, I would like to get my backup history back.
Most likely, the old sparse bundle is corrupted, and Time Machine can't use it. Try repairing it, per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If it can be repaired successfully, Time Machine may continue using it.
If it can't be repaired, or TM won't continue using it, there's not much you can do. Keep the old sparse bundle for a while (you may be able to browse and restore from it, per #E2 in the Troubleshooting Tip. Once you're sure you don't need the old set (or Time Machine runs out of room and has to start deleting backups from the new set), delete the old sparse bundle via the Finder.

  • Problem connecting iOS devices to AirPort Extreme (5th Generation)

Okay, this is such a weird problem that I just cannot seem to solve. I have a AP Extreme (5th Gen) setup with most of the default settings such as:
    Guest Network
    WPA/WPA2 Personal on both networks
    5Ghz turned off
Radio Mode, 2.4 Ghz mode, 5Ghz mode = Automatic
PPoE (using the AP as my router connected to my DSL modem)
DHCP (with a couple of reserved IPs)
Port Mapping (for a couple of WAN services)
So, here is my issue. The internet on the APE is working perfectly, no problems with any dropped connections or otherwise, everything is functiniong reliabily. The issue is I keep having problems connecting to the wirless networks using iOS devices (iPhones specifically). I have 6 Macs (various models, some g some n) connected wirlessly at most all times and they always remain connected. However, for some reason the network will just drop on the iPhone. After doing a hard reboot of the APE (disconnecting the power), the wireless comes up and I can connect multiple iPhones without issue. However, a day or two go by and all of a sudden the network just will not allow a connection on any iPhones (I've tried about 6+ iPhones, so it's not the configuration of the phone). Sometimes I'll be able to connect to the guest network, other times not. But again, the Macs will connect fine and there are no errors reported with the APE.
I just cannot figure out what the issue could be, why would all of my Macs connect but not a single iPhone? Are there any settings that anyone knows of that I may need to change. Also, would turnning on 5Ghz on this APE negatively affect the performance of my 2.4Ghz network (I do have a couple of machines that could use the wide channel). Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

I have the option of turning on/off the 5GHz network under the Wireless Options (with an additional network name). What does this achieve exactly, does it split the 5GHz and 2.4GHz radios in to separate networks or something? Would it be advisible to turn this on or leave it off?
This option allows you to use a different Network Name for the 5 GHz network. It does NOT actually perform as an on-off switch for this band. By default, both bands use the same Network Name. Both bands ARE separate wireless networks that operate simultaneously.
As far as the Radio Mode options, there is only:
802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n (Automatic) - Which is what I have it on currently
    802.11a/n - 802.11b/g
    802.11a - 802.11b/g
Sorry, the "trick" is to hold down the Option key before making a selection. The additional Radio Modes will then appear.

  • Recently bought airport Extreme and have connected the device to the modem. WIFI works. However when I connect the LAN port to a switch I do not see the LAN printer and my NAS. Which setting do I miss?

I have installed my Airport Extreme and have conencted it directly to a modem. WIFI works fine. However I do not see my LAN network (printer. NAS,..).
    Analysis:
Scen#1: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a switch (as input) and connect the other LAN devices also to the switch, those LAN devices do not have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the Airport Extreme I cannot find my LAN printer and other devices.
Scen#2: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a router X (as input) and connect the router X to the same switch, and the LAN devices to the switch, those LAN devices do have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the router X I can find my LAN printer and other devices in the LAN network.
Question what has impacted the behaviour of the Airport Extreme, not to detect the devices in the LAN network. Why is the use of a switch directly behind the Airport Extreme not working (no internet access for the other devices and Airport Extreme is not the basis station for the LAN network)?

Your scenario #1 is a correct configuration and should work. It seems as though your Extreme is not acting as a router as I believe you intend.
Most likely, you need to reset your modem. Power it down and let it rest for a few moments. Some need longer than others. Then, I recommend you "hard reset" your Extreme (see below) and configure it again, after the modem has been reset. From then on do not change what is connected to your modem without powering it down first.
Once configured, confirm your Extreme's wireless network works as expected and that your iPad and every other wireless device can load web pages. Then, connect the printer directly to one of the Extreme's LAN ports and confirm that it works as well. After that it should work equally well with a switch between it and the Extreme, as should every other wired device connected to the switch. This assumes your switch is an unmanaged device requiring no specific configuration.
Scenario #2: Having a router connected downstream of another is not a normal configuration, so don't pursue that as a solution. It will only distract you from determining the problem. If you want to repurpose Router X as another device do so only after everything else is working to your satisfaction.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.
