Multiple Displays, Fullscreen Apps, and Mission Control

I love Lion, however one thing that has always bothered me was the fact that it doesn't play nicely with multiple displays. Full screen apps do not allow the other display(s) to be available for use with that app is in fullscreen mode. And Mission Control doesnt behave as expected with multiple displays.
A simple solution would be the following. When you have two displays side by side and you do a three finger swipe to the left, the contents in display 2 would then fill display 1, then the contents in desktop three, would fill display 2. So really, each display would have its own desktop rather than sharing one desktop from the other displays. If the user has different size displays, shrink the window to fit the display. This would also solve the fullscreen issue because the other display has its own desktop. Let me know what you think of this idea and if it can be implemented.
Honestly, this is getting pretty frustrating, so please Apple, fix this. Thank you.
Austin

  • Dropping files to fullscreen apps through mission control results in app folder opening and in some sort of task switching madness

In Snow Leopard I got used to attach documents in mails by dragging and dropping files from the desktop to the message window. To do so  I used active corners (spaces, exposé). Now, with Mission Control in Lion I've tried to keep that workflow but this leads me to an awkward problem. To reproduce it in my computer I do the following:
Pick up a file from the desktop --> drag it to lower right corner (opens mission control) --> drag it to full screen mail space, press space to switch (applications folder opens inside mission control), and a lot of apps too (those the cursor hovered).
At the same time, mail full screen window opens (as waiting time selected in finder preferences for triggering is short), then Lion turns crazy entering in some sort of spasmodic task switching mode, which lasts after I find some clear space to drag the file back in the desktop.
Did any other user  experience something similar? Is there something I could do to help to fix the problem?
    Thanks for you answers.
[Edit: Ok, so I started trying with other apps and it turns that every time I drag and drop any file to a fullscreen app in mission control and use the space key to open it, I get a similar behavior. I did it in Scrivener and it resulted in photoshop and itunes opening,  Scrivener vanished and but left an empty (like dashboard's) desktop.]

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
    >>Running bootcamped Win7, yes power consumption is more, a lot more,....indications are no.
Sorry, can you clarify on this one - do you mean the power consumption is more DURING the use of Windows, or ALL of the time (even when using the Mac as normal with OSX).... also what did you mean by indications?
    >>From the parameters of what you say your use would be, Id recommend the I5 with 8gig of ram. the 12 hour >>batt. life is only rated for the 13" on the I5, ....not the I7.
Sounds like my first guess was about right - and good point about the battery life - as that is something that's quite important to me!
    >>The "switch" is extremely easy. Ive seen grandmothers switch to a MAC and have its 'everyday use' >>conquered in under a week. So, you should have no worries, its extremely user friendly, no worries of virus, >>etc.
Glad to hear I've done more research and already seen a few features I can see myself preferring a lot more to the Windows system!
    >>As a former computer repairman, Ive owned nearly 200 diff. laptops (many were free, or Franken-computers >>built from parts) and I can honestly say the Macbook AIR is the finest piece of beloved hardware Ive ever >>owned by a mile.
    >>Many people incorrectly see the THIN nature of the Air and incorrectly conjecture its "less than" a full laptop, >>but the contrary is the case.
Nah, I don't associate size with performance - especially these days, everything is getting smaller. My concerns are really just about whether to upgrade for extra performance, and using the OS - once I have those nailed I am pretty cofident the hardware will perform well.
    >>Additionally the AIR is the only Mac that has 802AC wifi, new Haswell cool-running processor, and extremely >>long 12 Hr. batt life on the I5 13" configuration.
Yeah that battery life is one of the big sellers
    Cheers for the tips,

  • App Expose and Mission Control in Lion

Several people have posted, confused by how App Expose works. I hope to clarify the function of App Expose and Mission Control.
    APP EXPOSE
App Expose in Lion works differently than Expose did in Snow Leopard.
App Expose is intended to show all open windows from the same application.
Expose used to show all open windows from all applications.
To test App Expose in Lion, open two (or more) separate windows in Safari (or any application). Three-finger swipe down on your trackpad and App Expose will reveal your two (or more) open Safari windows.
    MISSION CONRTOL
In Lion, the most similar thing to the old Expose (from Snow Leopard) is the new Mission Control.
To test Mission Control, open several applications. Three-finger swipe up on your trackpad and Mission Control will reveal all open applications, dashboard and spaces. If you have multiple windows open in a single applications (like three separate Safari windows, for example), MIssion Control groups those same-app windows together.

Mission Control ended years of divergent attempts to manage windows and widgets, consolidating Expose, Dashboard, and Spaces into a new Mac interface.

  • Yahoo Finance app in Mission Control is not downloading/retrieving data.  What do I need to do?  Apple store computers have same app and are working fine.

The Yahoo Finance app in Mission Control is not retrieving info concerning stocks prices.  It will go to the Yahoo Finance page.  I went to the Apple Store and this app appears to be working just fine on their new computers
.  What could be the problem?

MacBook Pro and Mac Pro are not the same machine.   The MacBook Pro is a notebook, and the Mac Pro is a desktop.   Regardless, the question you have pertains more to Quicktime or iMovie, as both those are video importing applications.     Do you wish me to ask a moderator to redirect your question to either forum?
    There are forums for each.
One application I found is great for importing non-Apple compatible video formats is http://www.etinysoft.com/total-video-converter-hd.html though you may need to get a Flash Card reader that supports your camera's flash card on a Mac to import the video.

  • Moving Between Apps Using Mission Control

    Hello,
Does anyone know of way that I can quickly move between apps using the arrow keys and Mission Control?  For example, in Snow Leopard if I use Mission Control (F3) I could easily move between all of my apps and/or multiple instances of an app by using the arrow keys.
In Lion if use Mission Control the apps come up but I have to actually click on the one the app that I want to bring up.
    Thanks,
    Brian

I use the three finger swipe:
The three finger swipe works in Mission Control too. There are lots of ways to accomplish this.
⌘ Tab works for all open apps, including those that are "minimized".

  • My spaces and mission control stop working shortly after startup

My spaces and mission control stop working shortly after startup.  The feature to activate it on the keyboard won't work, also trying to open the app itself doesn't do anything and the multitouch two finger swipe and hpt corners I have setup don't do anything as well.  Any idea on what might be conflicting to cause this?

Try moving your com.apple.spaces.plist from the preferences folder to the desktop then give it a try.  To get your preference folder you will need to hold down the option key while clicking on the go menu in the finder then click on library then click the preferences folder.

  • Launchpad and Mission Control animations are slow

Recently the animations for when opening Launchpad and Mission Control have been slower than usual. All the other animations seem to working fine and it's just those two which are the problem. Now whenever I try to open either one of them it would take ages and theres no point opening it at all. Is there a file that I could edit ot is there a Terminal command to speed it up?

  • How to maintain order of Full Screen and non Full Screen apps in Mission Control

Hey guys, so i've gotten used to Full Screen Apps now, but as a power user who was used to Spaces, I like my windows to be in a specific order. 10.7.2 was great in that we can now re-arrange our screens in Mission Control, however, as soon as I do a restart, Lion reverts to having desktops on the left, and full screen apps on the right (i.e., it doesn't keep the order in which I left them before the restart). Now this really bugs me because by using the swipe feature, I want to know EXACTLY what app is to the left or right of me, as opposed to just turning on the "Order screens by most recent use" option, which I find to be too chaotic and unorganized. Has anyone figured out a way to do this? Below of pics of how I would like Mission Control to look like, and how it looks like after a restart.
How I'd like for Mission Control to look like: (Desktops and Full Screen Apps intermingling)
How Lion re-arranges Mission Control after a restart: (Full Screen Apps to the right)

Shift-CMD-F toggles full screen off and on in Fx. Also, if you've put the Full Screen icon in the Firefox Toolbar, bring the mouse cursor up to the top of the screen. This will reveal the toolbar and you can click on the icon to return to normal.
Get the icon from View>Toolbars>Customize. Drag it into the Toolbar somewhere.

  • Moving apps in mission control over multiple screens

Hey all, is it at all possible to move applications through mission control between screens? In Spaces this was no problem, but with Mission Control they seem to have botched this up.
So, I open mission control, i see MC running on both screens, then I want to grab a window, and move it to a 'space' on my other screen. Pretty straightforward stuff. Not a problem in Spaces. Seemingly impossible in MC.
    Am i overlooking something?
    regards,
    cor

Yes, I completely agree. I can't see how to see minimized programs in MC either and it is extremely annoying.
Another annoyance is programs appear in different places from one use of Mission Control to another a few seconds later.

  • Can't drag folders or files between apps using mission control

I've been using Lion without any incident so far, but now that I've downloaded the lastest update (10.7.2) I can't drag a file or folder using mouse click (or my wacom tablet) between apps or folders - gestures simply will not work.
Once I click on a file, the multi-touchpad stop responding - if this is for real, Mac just lost it's allure... the nimble feature of exposé and/or mission control was this sole ability to navigate through apps and draggin files.
What's the status, anyone got this issue already?

I've been encountering the exact same problem! that was my favourite multi-touch gesture of all, which improved the productivity greatly. The only workaround for me is to assign hot-corners to mission control and drag files i want to the corners, but I really hope there's an explanation for this because i would really like that feature to be back

  • How to switch between apps in mission control shortcut key

  • Minimized apps in Mission Control

I've noticed a difference in Mission Control over Exposé, and I wanted to check it isn't just me.
In SL, windows from any apps that are minimized to the Dock show up as small thumbs at the bottom of the screen.
In Lion, this doesn't seem to be happening. In the example below, there is an iCal window minimized on the desktop; you can just see it above the Trash.
Has anyone else seen this, or is it just another way that MC is different? (The white window visible in the Desktop thumb at the top is Grab's timer screen)

Yes, I completely agree. I can't see how to see minimized programs in MC either and it is extremely annoying.
Another annoyance is programs appear in different places from one use of Mission Control to another a few seconds later.

  • How to see hidden apps in Mission Control

In Exposé in Snow Leopard at the low part of the screen, I could see all my hidden apps. In Mission Contrtol (Lion) I don't get to see the hidden apps. I've gone through all the system preferences and I did not see anything to be able to active it, I mean, to be able to see my hidden apps when I launch Mission Control.
Has anyone already solved this issue somehow?
    Thanks a lot.
    Regards.

    YES . you get it.
Not thing to apologize. you don;t do anything wrong. sorry about my word i'm not good in english.
    it call Minimize windows
by your answer that is ok. The window will go to stay on Dock by click in  >System Preference >Dock > Uncheck Minimize windows into application.
but someone (me and topick owner Jmayorperes) we check in minimize window to application icon . because i want a static Dock . dont want many icon on Dock when i minimize.
and old style expose is allow me to see all active window and all minimize windows in same place. by move mouse to hot corner .
But Lion if you want to see  Minimize window you must >>>  .. hold click to icon and select > show all window .. That's it.   http://postimage.org/image/2wd9ly7no/
but i think 1-2 second difference not good .
That why we try to get it back . it just change by apple. maybe it good for people who use touchpad or andything i don't know.
but for me it difference. and have to change behavior hope it come back in next update
    Thanks you AMMOCAN

  • Multiple Displays: New app windows not opening on current display

Does anyone have a suggestion or information for me on this one? Here's the story:
I have a brandy-new 15" MBP Retina. All kinds of snazziness! I also picked up a MDP Apple Cinema Display at the same time. Why MDP instead of Thunderbolt you ask? Because I have an older MDP-only MBP I use from time to time, plus Apple had just taken their remaining inventory of NEW MDP displays and marked them as refurbs, saving me $200.
I'm running 10.9 Mavericks and have the displays set to operate as separate spaces/desktops. I sit directly in front of the cinema display and use that primarily while keeping a few other apps open on the MacBook display to my right. Typically, the MacBook has Spotify running fullscreen on it. And this is where I have trouble. There are some apps that insist on opening new windows on the "primary" display, and not the current "working" display. For example, use the Finder to locate a PDF file and double click only to have the MacBook display slide Spotify to the side and show the PDF. So, I move the window to the cinema display (which is where the Finder window is, or email message...) then switch the MacBook back to the fullscreen app. TextWrangler has the same behavior. When I click on the TextWrangler icon in the dock or launch it from Spotlight it slides the fullscreen app on the MacBook display out of the way. This is the case even when I've done all of the most recent work on the cinema display. This also happens even if the app in question already has windows open on the cinema display, i.e. within TextWrangler with an open file press Command-N and the new window appears on the MacBook.
Is this app specific? Is there something the app developer has done? I've checked the icons in the dock to make sure they're not "assigned" to anything. Anybody able to shed some light on this for me? Is this a bug or am I missing the justification for this behavior?

Another strange example... Mail. Mail on Cinema Display, click reply, new message window appears on Cinema Display, but MacBook Display switches to a non-fullscreen desktop. Pourquoi?
